After a failed attempt at getting food at the Foundry opening week, the boys and I went to Sauce on the Side to get some grub. The tables were spaced out and they implemented the mask policy. My friends talked so positive about this place, so I came with high hopes. I tried some a few weeks ago and it wasn't bad, but never went into the establishment and ordered it. The employees were very friendly and guided me to which calzone was best for me...aka I was torn between two and they were like 'Choose Pancho Villa' with the quickness. I ordered that and a beer (Off Color Beer for Golf, nice flavor) and went to sit at a table. After a short amount of time, everyone got their food. I loved the portion size and I asked for some hot sauce (cause I like hot sauce). The Pancho Villa came with peppers in it already, but why not more spice? The queso dipping sauce was great. Innovative and wholesome... great for any cold day or whenever you need good comfort food! Environment: Order at the front counter and find any open seat you like, they'll bring the food to you. The place is clean, modern, and spacious-- it's great for a casual date or even a large group. They have multiple sections of seating, some quieter than others. The servers are really friendly and check on you often (even though the place is set up to be a self-serve for the most part). Seems like a lot of people carry out rather than eat in, so sit further back if you don't want a busier ambiance. Food/Drink: Fresh calzones with quality ingredients. The sauces on the side (heh) were clearly made in house. The calzones are huge and feed a large appetite, but have all the right things for you to take home the leftovers too. Roasty Toasty is an absolute favorite, but there was a bit too much cheese/wasn't distributed properly throughout the calzone like it usually is. Also more of the extras (red onions and pine nuts) could've helped balance the dish more. The Magic Carpet Ride was very rich and earthy with all the mushrooms, and the garlic honey oil helped cut it with some sweetness. The garlic butter was also really rich, so probably not the best pairing of calzone and sauce. Also the crusts of both calzones were a bit dense, especially around the edges, rather than light and airy like they usually are. I guess the person making the calzones really does make a difference to the eating experience. Rating: 3.5/5, high quality fresh calzones with lots of options for whatever you're in the mood for. Giving it a 4/5 because their calzones are usually great. Some nit picky things about the crust and fillings, but overall a really solid bite. If you're looking for a Sauce on the Side in town, this is one of the better ones we've been to (and we've tried 'em all)! People say their salads are a hit... might have to try it next time! read more

we have been to the Edwardsville location a few times with very positive experiences today took the calzone so to speak. my husband and I ordered and sat down. we sat and watched 3 other families come in after us. some with outside food from another place. They were all served before us. i received my order after about 15 minutes. my husband however waited for a total of an hour. in that time we flagged a server down to ask what the issue was. they never communicated any issues on there end but asked us what our order was 3 times. even one of the cooks came out and asked us the same question twice. after an hour, we finally received his order and we asked to just box it up. I'm sad to say I will not be coming back. if they had communicated with us the issues they had on their end it would have been a better experience. instead we were mostly ignored. read more

Heard many great things on Sauce on the Side so I decided to try it out. We ordered the Garden Calzones and the Santa Clauszones. The good thing about Sauce on the Side is that you can customize your order so if there's a filling that you want to change or add anything, you can easily do it. The price is reasonable because one calzone is super filling. The size of their calzones is pretty big. I was so full after eating my calzone. They also do free delivery if you live close to the restaurant. You can call directly to the restaurant to place the order and ask about the free delivery service to see if you are qualified. They also do curb side pick-up and DoorDash fyi. In terms of food, I think the taste is good but still not too delicious to my liking. I think the marinara sauce that comes with the garden calzone is a little sour. The eggplant in the garden calzone was sour as well. I didn't know that they used pickled eggplant for it. Therefore, I was not very pleased with my order. However, in general, I would say their food is good. Santa Clauzones was definitely something different compared to a regular calzone. Over the years we've tried many and none stand up to the Duke with the bbq ranch that is legit drinkable. We also like the September special, the hot honey bird. The one thing I will say is they can be wildly inconsistent. Meaning the quality and the dispersement of ingredients can vary quite a bit on any given visit. We went last weekend and the hot honey bird was so wet you couldn't pick it up and the crust was soggily falling apart. We've also had a Duke that was more bacon than chicken with large pockets of cheese vs no cheese. Overall we really like it but just can't give it a 5-star due to the inconsistency. read more

Came here for a work lunch, and definitely wasn't disappointed. There is tons of space indoors and they have so many calzone options. I truly don't think you can go wrong - the flavors are so on point. They also have beer on tap, so that's fun for a mid work break. I've been coming here since before the pandemic, I walked down from my hotel and I love it. Everything comes in the form of a calzone, and they are also tasty. Last week I had the Carmen and my server took my idea and added some fresh jalapeños to it and let me have it with the spicy red sauce on the side and it was the bomb! Everything is just so tasty and fresh and they have some patio seating they do have wine and it's just lovely. It's a great place for groups and young people and older people. Rating: 4.8 Stars Despite being in St. Louis for years, this was my first time trying Sauce on the Side. Moreover, I have eaten very few calzones in my life. The pepperoni and Italian sausage were pretty well distributed throughout the calzone and not just concentrated in one area. The meat was flavorful and not too salty. I really enjoyed the PROVEL cheese, and I could definitely taste it. The PROVEL cheese, Mascarpone-Ricotta Blend, and Garlic Oil gave the calzone a ton of flavor and complemented the meat perfectly. The meat sauce was also excellent and was not watery. Lastly, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the service was good. I am disappointed in myself for not trying Sauce on the Side sooner. I've always loved Sauce on the Side. It was very small and relatively new when I moved to STL, so to see how it has flourished is so great! All of their offerings are amazing, so you really can't go wrong. I think my favorite calzone is the Five-O. I love pineapple with my savory dishes, but even if you don't, I think this could sway you! The Cock-A-Doodle Noodle left a little bit to be desired, especially as being touted on the Travel Channel. Despite St. Louis having a lot of Italian eateries calzones are something that just aren't that common at any of the restaurants. Sauce on the Side has turned them into an art form. Think of them as a personal sized pizza folded in half with a nice crispy dough crust. The ones at Sauce on the Side are large, and they are easily enough to fill someone up. For calzones I typically gravitate to anything that has sausage and pepperoni. There is also typical a rotating special. To compliment the calzones there are some salads and choices of appetizers. The side salad I've tried out was decent. The boneless chicken bites were underwhelming though so I'd recommend skipping them. To drink this location in the grove has a nice selection of beers on tap as well as bottled beers. They also have non-standard soda. I want to say they were Excel products. I actually like this as it is just a change from the run of the mill. I don't think I could eat the calzones every day, they are just too filling. Ever since moving to St. Louis, Sauce on the Side has been one of my go-to restaurants. And it's easy to see why. Carbs and cheese. It's a match made in Italian heaven. Today I really needed to blow off some post Election Night stress, and Sauce on the Side was at the top of my mind since Sunday was National Calzone Day. I met up with a former coworker to catch up at the Sauce on the Side in the Grove, which incidentally is my favorite location. This particular location offers ample on and off street parking as well as a much larger dining area that some of their other locations. They are taking so many precautions in the COVID era, and they're much appreciated. They have installed a to-go ordering and pickup window that is conveniently located under a Sauce on the Side branded pop-up tent. They were also offering contactless curbside pickup. Lucas, my former coworker, and I decided to eat our lunch at one of their socially distanced tables outside the building since the weather was just so nice! They also had hand sanitizer everywhere you looked. That was a huge relief. I TRIED to be healthy by ordering my favorite salad, the Smokehouse. It features pancetta and a corn salsa. I always add some shredded BBQ chicken for an extra bit of protein. The BBQ ranch dressing the salad is served with is such a lovely complement to the salad. Its creamy smokiness pairs perfectly. Lucas went with his go-to, the Five-O. I have never tried that particular calzone, but we have eaten at Sauce on the Side together many times, and he ALWAYS orders it. He said he loves that it's paired with BBQ sauce, because it's not something you typically expect for a calzone. We also ordered tomato basil bites for the table. These are a newer add to the menu, and I'm glad they were added! They're basically breaded balls of cheese. The creaminess of the cheese was the exact relief from election stress I needed today. read more

I actually found this place on Yelp believe it or not. I work off of Olive Dr. in STL and was looking for something new to try when this gem popped up. I went online to check it out and they had a special going called the Don Corlezone and figured why not, and I ordered it for takeout from the Creve Coeur location. Fabulous, I couldn't believe what I have been missing all along, the food is delicious, the staff is super friendly, and one of the owners happened to be there during my visit. He was very nice and asked me to join the rewards program. My original visit was in June of 23' now its February of 24' and this is a very frequent visit for me at lunch when I have to go to the office. The quality of the food, the friendliness of the staff, and overall experience is CONSISTENT and FANTASTIC. The restaurant is always clean and has a cool vibe to it for those who like to eat in. If you haven't heard of, or tried this place, give it a go, you will be SO glad you did. read more

With several pizza places in the area, sauce on the side sticks out with their flavorful calzones. You order up front, then sit wherever you please. The seating is open and perfect for both groups and personal conversations. Food was brought out quickly- which was both good and bad. It was nice to get the food quickly, but I noticed that as I cut into my calzone it was a little lukewarm. It didn't take away from the flavor but I wish it was hot when served, even if it takes a bit longer. In all I would definitely recommend trying sauce on the side, but if you find your calzone is not on the warm side ask them to heat it up for you! read more
