I ended up going two nights in a row, which should tell you everything you need to know. Night 1: The Fatty B This one lives up to its name--in the best way possible. Packed with flavor and perfectly balanced between savory and indulgent, every bite felt like comfort food done right. The crust was golden and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and held everything together without falling apart. It's rich, so come hungry. Night 2: Meat Me in St. Louis Had to come back and try one of their signature options, and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I were visiting St. Louis, and we were a bit hungry after visiting the Arch and going on a boat tour. Sauce on the Side wasn't too far away, and they have a vegan option. Perfect! Sauce on the Side is a calzone restaurant, with one vegan option, the Skinny V. (I suppose you can make your own vegan calzone, but we went for the menu option.) Although it says it comes with spicy red sauce, we were able to get the milder red sauce, which is also vegan. The calzones are large, so unless you're really hungry, one calzone is enough for two people. I think it's pretty cool that they use a local soda company for their fountain drinks. The calzone, with plant-based pepperoni and vegan mozzarella, didn't blow me away, but it was pretty good. I wouldn't go out my way to eat there, but if it's near where you're hanging out, it's a great place to grab a quick meal. read more

Quite possibly the worst Caesar salad I've had. The lettuce to croutons ratio is terrible. And the lettuce was a lot of butt ends. I also had them add steak. The photos looked like slices. Instead I got chopped tiny bits of steak. Looked like shaved beef. I actually couldn't tell what it was. But now I understand why it was so cheap. The food was ready quickly, but given what it was if it had taken long I would have been really concerned. I don't recommend getting a salad here. read more

I truly love any and all Sauce on the Side, but I love their new option where you can get a "mini" calzone and small salad or starter as a pick 2 situation. It's a great deal and you get the best of both worlds! I did the build your own calzone and it was stuffed with cheese, vegan pepperoni, mac and cheese, and spinach. Absolutely delicious. And I've had the Strawberry Fields salad before, it hits every time. I picked up takeout, which was easy enough aside from parking, but they can't control the snowy streets! Arrived downtown from STL Friday night. SOTS was open and walking distance. I ordered the Rudy and enjoyed both the calzone and the well paired sauce. Friendly service. This is a calzone lovers paradise! So many unique combinations that there is something for everyone. You order at the counter and it's brought to your table. They had a pick two special.... Mini calzone, salad or little bites are advertised for $13.99 HOWEVER depending on what calzone or salad you choose they upcharge! This was not explained to us when we asked. We ordered calzones to go, intending to eat outside, and the food was ready for us when we arrived. But the temperature had dropped on our walk over, and we were so cold, that we asked if we could eat in instead. The serve was friendly and welcomed us to pick a table in the quiet dining area. I was immediately grateful for his hospitality and willingness to accommodate us. But the star of our dinner were the calzones, of course. I've had calzones in several European countries, and I've made them from scratch at home too, but these calzones were epic. The flavor combinations were ingenious; I was particularly pleased with the Duke, but my kids enjoyed the Noodle calzone, and the dipping sauces made for multiple combinations of flavors that we enjoyed. I think it's the dough that puts these over the top, but regardless, we'll certainly be coming back on future visits to St. Louis. read more

Bring celiac, I haven't had a calzone in ten years. Until yesterday! And it was sooo good! They use rice flour for their gf calzones, and use separate cooking pans/utensils. It takes a few extra minutes, but worth it! My calzone was cheesy, steamy, and so full of flavor. Absolutely delicious! It was so good I went back the next day to get another gf calzone, and a regular one to bring all the way back to Arizona (where I live) to share with my husband (who's never had a calzone). His first calzone was an amazing! He loved it! He jokingly said we're getting in the car to make the 22-hour drive for more. Great job, Sauce on the Side. Not sure what I was expecting-- but aside from learning that maybe Provel cheese isn't my thing, it was okay? Outside is a nice enough setup on black-painted metal furniture and overhead string lights, the small salad was fine but should have gotten the large (barely any more expensive, and twice the size!), the Meat Me in St. Louie calzone felt much too liquidly with the cheese and not nearly enough meat. The liquidity of the cheese and the quality of meat inside felt very drowned out by the substantial portion of the flat crust. Again I really wonder how much of it is that St. Louis-style calzones and Provel cheese in particular aren't my thing. read more

I got the Figgy Piggy and my husband got the Meat Me in St Louie. They were both good; however, my Figgy Piggy was lacking filling and was mostly dough. My husbands on the other hand, had an appropriate amount of filling for the roughly $12 price point. The food was good, fast and fresh. It's a huge calzone, so we couldn't eat the entire thing in one sitting. However, they have cute little baby pizza boxes for you to take your left overs home with you. The sauces already come to the table in plastic cups with lids, so those can easily go home with you too. read more

I consider myself a calzone connoisseur and this place has everything I look for in a calzone! I was in STL for work and was delighted to see a calzone place near my hotel. My current home city of Chicago has an absolutely disappointing lack of them so I seized the opportunity to order one on a Sunday night for takeout. First, they use ricotta in their base cheese mixture- that is a must for me and really elevates a calzone. Second, they top it with Parmesan cheese after it is baked. Third, the crust is top notch- crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and perfectly seasoned. All of these add up to a truly excellent calzone. You get to choose from a variety of sauces but I went with a standard marinara which was really good. I did a build your own zone with pineapple, onions, and pepperoni and I devoured the whole entire thing in one sitting! I also ordered the smoked bacon salad and it was a bit of a letdown. It had a VERY smoky flavor, and it was a bit too much for me on a salad but that's probably on me since "smoked" was in the name of the salad. Next time I'd just get two calzones instead of a salad ha! When I picked up around 6:30 on a Sunday the restaurant was totally empty. They forgot the Diet Coke I ordered but I didn't realize it until I got back to my hotel so I called and they refunded that part right away. Went to the restaurant during a short stay in St. Louie for volleyball tournament. So many options! The staff was super helpful and helped us decided between a few choices. We also got the buffalo chicken appetizer and it was my daughter's absolute favorite. The foot took about 15 minutes due to the volume of people in there, but the staff warned us it would take a minute. I know other patrons were getting testy but there is so many inpatient people. No option on our menu to get pepper flakes or Parmesan. The calzone is a large portion with the crust being very soft. The pepperoni was disappointing as there was a stack of about 8-10 pepperoni stacked up and tucked into a corner, they never separated them. Went in on Saturday afternoon it was pretty slow so felt kinda abandoned but the host was very genuine and nice. I asked for recommendations and he was nice and told me popular and his preference. While in St. Louis I went to try Sauce in the Side. The yelp reviews helped in finding this place. It was a short walk from where I was staying. I ordered the Bullseye calzone. The crust was light with a nice crunch. The steak, cheese, spinach, balsamic mushrooms and onions was perfect. I don't know what the side sauce was but it was delicious. It had a nice flavor. Liken to a ranch with a zing in there. It was so good I ordered a calzone to take home. I ordered a pepperoni, mushroom and onion for my to go. The red sauce was really good! Calzones are often overlooked and not given their time in spotlight, not here! Sauce on the Side is indeed a calzone concept. The simple nature of the restaurant concept is so smart, they pretty much do two things calzones and sauces however, the menu also offers salads and other appetizers. The price point is right for a casual dining restaurant, around $13-$15 per person but, the quantity of the food makes it well worth it. My calzone was big enough for two satisfying meals. Also, the addition of some local beers on tap was a nice touch because beer and pizza (or pizza adjacent items) is always a match made in heaven. Now onto my order, there were so many delicious sounding combinations it was hate to pick. But, eventually I settled on the "Figgy Piggy", an adorable name for a calzone but, also a delectable array of flavors. This was the perfect melding of sweet and savory, with caramelized onions and figs creating a sweet base. The rest of the calzone was packed full of garlicky cheesy goodness and crispy pieces of bacon, it was such a good combination especially dunked in the traditional red sauce. My only wish is, I should have ordered some different sauce options on the side because the calzone is massive and I easily ran out of the marinara cup...I'm sure this would have been great dunked in a garlicky herby white sauce as well.
