I told her that my coworker likes chocolate cakes so she explained the different kinds that they offered. I chose the chocolate mousse cake and it was a huge hit. This is an old school bakery similar to where I grew up. You won't find frilly cupcakes but you will find solid pastries, donuts and breads baked fresh that day. A big thumbs up from me and my houseful of boys! I got a marble pound cake, some cupcakes and some cinnamon bread from here and it didn't last long. Well, no food item lasts very long here in a house with 3 teenage boys and an 8 year old trying to get some food before it's gone. The favorite item was the cinnamon bread! Nobody here likes cinnamon and raisin bread. As one kid puts it "It's so random. Like why not cinnamon and nuts or chocolate chips? What's with the raisins?" They have cinnamon bread with and WITHOUT raisins! It's a circular loaf with LOTS of cinnamon and sugar on it. Very tasty. Favorite #2 was the marble pound cake. Very moist and tasty, but not too moist. It didn't fall apart when you sliced it which was good. The cupcakes weren't that great. I was hoping for those huge bakery cupcakes and they weren't like that. The frosting also wasn't anything fancy. I felt like I could have opened a can from the store and plopped it on there. Awesome variety of standard bakery fare. I've had doughnuts, eclairs, cookies, and many other pastries. They even took care of me on paczski (Sp?) day! I have not tried the weekend only apple fritters yet, but I hear they are awesome! My favorites so far have been the cream filled star doughnut and the chocolate eclair. The cookies tend to be more towards the crumbly side, which is not what I prefer, but still very good. Nothing wrong with a Happy Face cookie! Next stop... cake and apple fritter. read more

Tucked away in a corner of a strip mall lies Sauer's Bakery. It's not much to look at from the outside but this place packs a punch of home bakery goodness! I can never go in there thinking "I'm just going to get cookies" or "I'm just going to get some coffeecake" Because once I get a look at the various goodies in the the display case, most of the time, I'm adding a another few items to my order. Agree with previous poster about the iced cookies--they're almost too cute to eat--but they are pretty tasty. Today they had Santas and snowmen--super cute! I think my favorites though are the cinnamon rolls and the coffee cakes. Neither is overly sweet which to me is a big plus. Great flavor, not heavy but light melt in your mouth goodness! I have to take a pass at the cupcakes though. They are really cute and always frosted according to season. I found the cake a little too dry and bland for my liking. They have a huge selection from cakes to cookies to bread. Service is always good. Always friendly. Prices very reasonable. Call ahead for business hours if you're not sure. I first discovered Sauer's on my hunt for a perfect Pączki! Why? Because I was tired of grocery store bought Pączkis!! The boy is part Polish and I won't let a Fat Tuesday go by without a Pączki! When I found Sauer's was near our new place I sent the boy over there after he dropped me off at the train station to pick us up some of these delightful pastries! I had no idea what we were in for... When he picked me up at the end of the day he was gushing about how they had upwards of 30 flavors - I may or may not be exaggerating... He brought us home 6 of them, 2 each and was ecstatic about it! So was I! We had breakfast for the next 6 days lol! And we loved every moment of it! These were the best Pączkis we'd ever tasted! Since then, I've been back a several times to pick up some delicious items for our sweet teeth! We've enjoyed everything we've had at Sauer's! I especially love the cheese danishes! We can't wait until next year for the Pączkis again! And I'm wondering if they are going to make Lebkuchen when the holidays come around! read more

This bakery has the best donuts, cakes, cookies, well just about everything!!!!! Honestly, you cannot go wrong with anything that you order. They have these amazing chocolate triangle donuts that are filled with buttercream frosting! I will say go early as they sell out of things quite early. read more

I have been wanting to try this for a while now and I finally made it in. It was amazing, I had two different kinds of coffee cake as well as a cupcake and a cheese cake pastry. Everything tasted very fresh and amazing, I could have probably eaten a whole coffee cake! The bakery it self was very cute on the inside there was a wide variety of things to choose from. I defiantly want to try the donuts next time, they just looked so fresh and yummy! I look forward to trying other things from here, since it is so close to home! read more

We have had birthday cakes from here and other snacks and they are 100% better than Jewel, Sams or Costco or any chain on the planet. They remind me of the old bakery stores that use to be all of Chicago back in the day. Alot of burb-peeps think getting a bakery cake is going to the Jewel - I dont think so The only reason I did not give 5 stars is they dont take plastic - if they do they charge you 4% The staff has never brought this to my attention it is posted and they expect you to see it. My first experience with the fee I found this to be rude and insulting - this is 2010 correct? most people I know live on plastic for everything. When I stop in here I only stop if I have cash. I pay enough in taxes an extra 4% is just wrong! If they did not have the 4% fee I may stop more often esp. for the office. read more

How lucky am I to have this fine gem right down the street? I have gotten cakes, cupcakes, cookies bread, and pie...everything was delicious! My husband's favorite are the cream puffs and for me it is a toss up between a smiley face cookie to brighten my day or the raisin bread that makes the BEST toast! I ordered 4 pounds of cookies from Sauer's Bakery for my work Christmas Party in December. The cookies were a HIT!! They were loved by all. I had at least 300 cookies for my party with 100+ people and there were maybe only 20-30 left at the end of the day. I brought the rest of the cookies home and my boyfriend loved them at home too! I also work for a Not For Profit and they were able to give me the cookies with Tax Exempt. They are very nice there. read more

Ambiance - 5/5 It is what it is. A cozy cute corner bakery. It's not a 5 star dine in location but what do you need that for in a bakery? right? Location - 4/5 It's hidden away in a corner, which is a darn shame. I really have to say if this was on a main road, it would be even more successful and popular. Although, I feel the fact that this little gem of a spot is hidden away adds to the mysteriousness and the uniqueness of the place. Service - 5/5 Fun. Period. I decided to go what I thought would be the higher end route and get a real bakery cake for my sons birthday instead of the lame Jewel cake. I called and ordered a yellow cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. What I got was a white cake with white whip cream frosting. Is it really that hard to make a cake the way the customer wants it? I let it go and brought it to my son's party anyway. I, along with all the guests thought the cake was pretty low quality and no where near worth the price I paid. Will never return. read more

The apple cider donuts are the BEST around, better than any pumpkin farm's. They are cake like and hold their own! I easily eat 3. You just have to get there early before they are gone, which on a Sunday is sometimes before 9AM. Love their pretty cookies too. read more

I've lived in Carol Stream for a little over a year now, and kept telling myself I have to stop by sometime and try some of their danish. I find myself to be somewhat of a pastry and danish snob because I was spoiled from a bakery I used to work at in Burr Ridge with some seriously good pastries. Sauer's Bakery, bravo, these were some exceptional danish. The pasrty was light, flakey and buttery. They were huge and for the price it's almost a steal. I got a long john, German kolochkey and an almond pastry to share with some friends and I'm kicking myself for not trying more! Until next time. OK....I'm a sweet person being I frequent bakeries more than I should. I also know quality pastry. To date the best bakery near me is Jarosch in Elk Grove. I recently visited Sauer's and here is my take. The danish is top notch, on par with Jarosch. The donuts are just ok, not nearly as good as Jarosch and when I bought three of them and saw what they charged me OMG!!! they charge $23.00 a dozen! Thats insane. Jarosch charges $14.95 a dozen. I guess if they can get it, great for them. I'll be a regular for the danish, because its closer for me. But when I have a taste for a great donut I'll have to drive. Let me be more specific if I may. High quality donuts are deep fried and the outer layer should be somewhat crispy when you bite it, store bought donuts and even dunkin donuts (low quality ) are soft when you bit. I have an ever growing pile of reviews that I need to write, but I wanted this review to be my first. It is because this bakery is so good that I finally decided I absolutely needed to get a yelp account to tell the world of it's greatness. After reading nothing but 5 - star reviews for this bakery, I needed to go check out what all the hype was about. Let me start by saying, nothing - and I mean nothing - can prepare you for the heavenly array of goodness that welcomes you as you pass through Sauer's doors. Tucked into a corner of a strip mall attached to a Jewel, I would have never found this place if not for Yelp. For that, I am eternally greatfull. Yes - its that good. I always look to yelp for suggestions of the best things to try, but I am not quite sure where to start. The only suggestion I have is that although the smilie face cookies are not only super cute, but delish, they are by far not the best thing you can find at this bakery. I almost cried while eating the apple cider doughnut! Currently my plan is to try each and everything that they offer - as I had a taste of many of their offerings today and was not one bit disappointed with any of them. I would also like to add that the staff is very nice - not only did they put up with my over excitement as a ran around the bakery pointing out numerous baked goods for them to box up, they were very helpful and knowledgeable. The moment I walked into this place and inhaled the aroma of sugary goodness, I was in love. I am a dessert lover/addict, and I adore this place. The sugar cookies are delicious, the apple cider donuts were a bit of heaven, and I almost wrestled my husband to the floor for more bites of his cinnamon roll. I have to force myself to stay away or I'd be about 50 pounds heavier. They have very good, standard cupcakes. Nothing fancy, but very good. So glad this place isn't across the street :) read more

I absolutely love this bakery and everything about it. The only even minor negative is location- it is really tucked away in a little strip mall, so if you don't know what you are looking for it might be tough to find- but that is only a minor detail. I have had items from this bakery on four different occasions, and actually gone in to make a purchase myself only once. Items I have tried include- donuts, various pastries, sugar cookies, and cake. I'd say the donuts and pastries are above average- and that the cake and cookies were right on target. The service in the store itself was very friendly and speedy- and the prices are very fair. The only items that are "expensive" are the whole cakes- but that is to be expected when you are buying a whole cake. On my trip in to the store myself I purchased 1.5 lbs of their mini sugar cookies, one large smiley face cookie, and 4 pastries for right around $20- strong quality for the price. I would definitely come back again, and look forward to visiting my friend who always treats us to Sauer's. read more
