DRINKS I opted for their black camo latte. The hojicha flavor was strong, and the drink itself was not too sweet. Their military latte is their iconic drink, so if I'm ever back in Chicago, it'll definitely be something I'll check out! FOOD They have a limited selection of pastries like donuts available for purchase. Selection was limited near the end of the day. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly! It gets busy fast, but they are efficient in pumping out orders. AMBIANCE Ample seating is available inside the store that is shared with the BBQ place adjoining the coffee spot. I visited around 2:30pm and it was filled with people working/studying or meeting with friends/coworkers. Complimentary wi-fi is available (password on the menu board). Finding the entrance was a bit confusing despite all the signs, but it's the one with a lot of stickers! PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. BATHROOMS Restrooms are available downstairs at the back of the establishment.
Not a long wait at all despite there being a long line. The staff definitely seems to have a good flow of service down! The reason for only 4 stars is because the matcha itself was only okay, admittedly I have had better. I just do not personally prefer matcha that tends to be on the chalkier side, and this one was (only slightly). Also, the milk to matcha ratio was a little too much, I prefer a stronger tasting matcha latte. As you know, street parking in the area is expensive, so just be aware of that before coming. Couldn't find any cheap options nearby. I will say , this was my first time trying espresso and matcha together for the Military Latte, and it was pretty good! I'd get it again to switch it up. Also the sour cream donut was FIREEE. Sawada shares a dining area with Green Street Smoked Meats, but they don't open til 11 am. If you plan on coming by around that time, be aware that they may ask you to move if you don't order food from their restaurant. We were not asked to do so, only because we got there around 10:30 and we were planning on eating anyway. Overall, I'm glad I checked this place out. The mood and ambiance is very calming, with the plentiful warm lighting and ample seating options (again, if you come before 11). If your goal is to try the best quality matcha though, I'd aim for elsewhere.
The black camo latte is good. I didn't really taste the espresso to be honest, only the hojicha. But the hojicha tasted pretty good and not powdery like many other places. I like the cocoa powder on top. The matcha they use could be improved, doesn't taste as good quality so I'd recommend the coffee or hojicha over the matcha. Super crowded during the weekend but as expected since it's right next to other popular food options in a food hall like environment.
EXCELLENT quality matcha from here. The authentic kind that isn't drowning in sugar. Sawada Coffee is in the same building as green street meats and high five ramen, so the open seating is shared. They do have a few seats along the window but there is plenty of seating if those are full. Service was quick and I was surprised to see that it was fairly busy for a very cold Monday AM. My husband and I shared the military latte (decaf) and it was delicious. Everything a latte should be. I enjoyed how this latte is unique to most coffee shops. It was bold, creamy, and very good. Pricing is fair when compared to other small business cafes.
Sawada is so well-known and highly reviewed so I was very excited to come try for myself! I do think Sawada is beautifully decorated and has such a great vibe. There is lots of seating and plenty of space for studying/wfh. Unfortunately, I was not as impressed with the drinks we got. I got the infamous military latte and hot latte Tokyo style. The military latte was good, but the combination of the matcha and espresso was just ok to me. The usually strong espresso/cocoa flavor gets lost and the matcha tastes watery? I can see why some people are fans, but it was not for me even though I usually love both espresso and matcha. The hot latte was ok, but regular sweetness was way too sweet. I wish I got 50% or less-- just a tip for those who aren't into super sweet coffee. Great crema and body though. I think Sawada is good for the "tourist" experience, but there is better coffee in the city.
One of my favorite coffee spots in the city in Chicago! There's always a huge line to order so best to plan ahead and avoid peak hours. The spot has plenty of picnic style seating and great music to catch up with friends, grab a drink, or a slice of pizza! I typically go there for coffee. Their cold brew and lattes are fantastic! I like the Tokyo style syrup in my oat latte (1.5 pumps). The baristas are very friendly and have great recommendations.
Sawada has some quality, potent matcha and its shared restaurant, Green Street Smoked Meats, has equally as delicious, well-seasoned elote! It's honestly ideal for when you want to put yourself in a food coma then jolt yourself awake to eat some more. There was a 15-minute wait to order and get your drinks on a Saturday afternoon, but the baristas are doing the best they can while maintaining quality. The vibes are friendly and communal. The long tables are great for big groups, but you might have some trouble finding seats on weekends. Just don't come here to study like I did - there are cafes across the street for that!
The Military latte was my first time trying hot matcha and honestly, it wasn't for me. The Black Camo was better and tasted more like a milk tea. Overall, it was kind of a letdown considering how hyped this spot is for coffee and matcha. The vibes are cool though, and I might come back to try other drinks.
Awesome coffee shop that is in the same spot as a barbecue shop that I have been to that sell Mom barbecue. Got the military latte here and this is a flavor bomb. It is coffee, Matcha, vanilla, and cocoa all mixed into one. The matcha part of the drink is nice and earthy and overall the drink is not sweet at all. Drinks are on the price side. Recommend a spot and will come back.
Saw Sawada on Yelp's top matcha list some time ago and made sure I visited before work. A mix of user skill issues (ordering the military matcha latte) alongside my expectations being high made me disappointed. Typically when a shop has coffee in the name, it's probably expected their matcha isn't a highlight but purely based on perception, I think their other matchas would be tasty and authentic. Military Matcha Latte - after reading through the hype, I was pretty disappointed. The drink's camo appearance looked promising but in reality it was just an espresso with a skin (like that of a game, a bit pay to win). There weren't any earthy undertones present and the matcha may as well not have been there.
When it's 5 degrees outside and there is a line leading outside...you KNOW it is a good coffee spot. I met up here the other day with one of my coworkers and it was amazing. Very clean inside, lots of seating, but also totally packed because they have delish coffee and blueberry muffins. I snagged us some seats and then we did mobile order pickup because it just seemed like that would be smarter instead of standing in the line, and it was a pretty good idea. I got an iced white mocha peppermint latte and it was delish. Def will be back to try more of their coffee and food!
I love coffee and I am always trying to check out new coffee shops. I cannot believe I have probably passed Sawada Coffee a million times without realizing it was there, especially since it is connected to a BBQ spot I have been to a few times. Once I was finally introduced to it, I have already been back twice. Everything I have had has been so good, super flavorful and well balanced. On my last visit I tried one of their specialty coffees and it was phenomenal. Definitely a new favorite and a must try if you are a coffee lover. Service is cool! It's small but it's a shared space so plenty of spots to sit.
I found this spot as I was searching for coffee places via Yelp while visiting Chicago. The pictures and reviews led me here, Friday morning. The entrance door was not easy to find since I was not familiar with this place but it's a door is filled with stickers and tags. Once you enter, it leads you to a staircase to the shop. The place has an interesting vibe, industrial mixed with modern coffee and food hall seating. There was a line but it was not too long. Ordered the Matcha Military Latte with extra shot ($7.95). It tasted really good and enjoyed it while outdoor dining. The outdoor dining is like an alley way which leads to the street with interesting wall-artwork. I really enjoyed my experience here and highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for good coffee. read more

Pumpkin spice is in season! I tried their seasonal Houjicha Spiced Pumpkin Latte today and thought it was ok. I didn't really taste the hojicha, but I tasted the spices and it was lightly sweetened. Thought I'd give their seasonal a try, but I prefer their signature military latte or matcha latte :) Also pretty cool that they make matcha cortado's! Cute spot, service was fine. Went here on a whim bc I had heard so much about their matcha. It's really bad. Like really bad. I don't know if they don't whisk it properly bc it has no foam and separates quickly. I got mine unsweetened because to me a good matcha doesn't need sugar. Oh this one does. It was so bitter and bad I couldn't drink it. And it was almost 10 dollars with milk alt and a 1 dollar tip. Do not waste your time if you actually like matcha. read more
On a morning run downtown, my mother wanted coffee so I looked up places nearby and saw this on several of the travel lists. I am glad that we went there though it looked like a speakeasy when we found it, upon walking in we were amazed by the lighting and the deep seating. We took our matcha lattes and oat lattes to go since I had to get back but vowed to come back quite soon. My mom got a pastry which she enjoyed. This might be my new little spot when I visit family again. The place reminded me of the underground tea villages in California so much that I had to look up who owns this place?!?! And of course it is a partnership between Brendan Sodikoff of Hogsalt Hospitality (Au Cheval, Maudes fame) and Japanese coffee celebrity Hiroshi Sawada. I am almost embarrassed to say that it has been open since 2015 when I did live back in the Chi but I didn't know about this place. I did live in Lincoln Park though so... that part. When I go back I will try the famous military and take a seat to enjoy the atmosphere. read more

Best coffee place in chicago 10/10/10/10! No skip menu, however this isn't your typical coffee shop where you can order and sit down to chat / do work. It's a heavy traffic coffee shop, but it is connected to a restaurant if you wanted to eat at the same time. read more
We stopped by here on Labor Day, and it was pretty packed. -- the line went out the door! I ended up getting the Military Latte, which is under the matcha category. I believe it is a matcha latte with espresso in it. I wasn't a huge fan at first, but it grew on me and I ended up enjoying it. I tried my friend's matcha latte with oat milk, and I wasn't really impressed by it, so I would recommend trying the military latte. There is limited seating along the window with some access to outlets. At the time of my visit, there were a handful of people sitting there doing work on their computers. There is also seating at the bleachers nearby, but the actual tables are reserved for the restaurant patrons. read more
This coffee "shop" is packed but with highly efficient baristas and stunning drinks, the line is well worth it. The seating area seems to be shared with other eateries and while we didn't stay, it seems a great place to hang out. I debated between the High Five Mocha and the Black Camo Latte and settled on the former based on a recommendation. It was excellent! The citrus was bright and the ramen spice was subtly warming. If you're looking for a subtly sweet mocha, this one is for you. It's perfect on a cold and windy day!! read more

Cool coffee shop that is connected to a bar. A bit on the pricey side for what was offered. Both drinks left a lot to be desired. The chai was way too sweet and had a watery consistency, even though it was with oat milk. The military latte left a lot to be desired and had a weird aftertaste. Overall, the latte art was okay, but it was uncomfortably packed in there. Don't think we'll be back. read more

Cool spot to grab a coffee or matcha latte in West Loop. Sawada Coffee is in the same space as Green Street Meats, in a lofted area right next to the dining area. There are some interesting choices on the menu. I went with a "regular" matcha latte since I came in during the afternoon, but you can also get a matcha latte with espresso shots. The main menu at the counter doesn't list descriptions, so if you're curious what's in the Military Latte (like I was), take a look at the menu on the wall by the entrance first. Or ask the friendly staff for a recommendation! Although I ordered the "regular" matcha latte, this is by no means your average matcha latte! This matcha was bold and delicious -- I personally love the earthy flavors. Sometimes matcha can taste diluted, so I really appreciate the high quality matcha used at Sawada! read more
Coffee and friends make the perfect blend If you've never had @sawadacoffee here's your sign to drive over to Fulton market and try it! Pictured here is the cold brew with almond milk and the military latte and of course we got the bakery items, it's too good to pass up! We ended up doing the chocolate chip cookie and blueberry lemon cookie which is only seasonal so they are getting rid of it soon and both were as big as our heads! And we even tried the military mochinut and it matched to what the drink tasted like! All of it was very delicious The service and ambiance are always great here! read more

I tried the Black Camo Latte hot and my friend got it iced. I really liked my latte; the hojicha came through which I appreciated since it can be a nuanced flavor. I got it decaf so I can't speak to the caffeine level. The only thing was that my first couple sips were quite bitter due to the cocoa powder on top. The drink actually tasted much better after I let it sit for a little bit. Later art on top was an added bonus! Service was quick and ambiance was lively. Many people working on laptops and then in the back there was a restaurant. Only problem was that there was no place to charge my phone on the picnic style benches. read more
So it looks like sawada shares a space with green street smoked meats. There was a lot of people coming in for lunch but I just got a military latte from sawada. The entrance looks like a bar and there is an actual alcoholic bar in there! Lots of the long tables are reserved for the smoked meats customer but if you look hard enough you will find some open seats and you'll just have to squeeze in with the other patrons that were already there. Get the Military (matcha + espresso + cocoa powder) or Black Camo latte (hojicha + espresso + cocoa powder) for a smooth matcha-and-espresso experience. The pastries they carry are also solid (I can recommend the croissants and the kale-gruyere scone). They share their space with Green Street Meats (BBQ) and the vibe is a hipster, high-ceilinged formerly-industrial space with lots of textured, rough-wood-and-metal touches, lit with draped strings of lights. Note: They can use Green Street's seating until lunch time after which Sawada has only a few counter seats at their front windows. read more
It's a great coffee shop. I came here early with the intention to get a drink and study for a few hours. The military latte is the thing to get here as it's their most popular drink. It's very good and I highly recommend it. As time went on it got busier. Sawada shares the space with Green Street Smoked Meats so it became more crowded. I wasn't worried because I had my spot. However, all of the tables are reserved for the bbq restaurant after 11:00 am. So at around 1:00 pm a bbq server kicked me out of my spot saying that I have to move to the bleachers or the upper deck. But it was so busy and there was no place for me to sit. Luckily I was finished with my work so I was fine with it. It's a great place to get some good coffee and socialize in a beautiful space. But it can get very busy and it's not an ideal place to get work done. Overall, I recommend giving this place a try! read more
We were looking for a great coffee shop while we were in Chicago, and Sawada didn't disappoint! They had such unique offerings, and the coffee was delicious. Great part of Chicago to hang out in. Definitely the best coffee i've tried while in Chicago! I got the Black Camo Latte ($6.65) and my friend got the Military Latte with Oat Milk ($7.40). I'm a huge hojicha fan (roasted green tea) so I really loved the black camo. It had a really nice chocolaty nutty flavor and was the perfect amount of sweetness. Both the espresso and hojicha weren't overpowering so if you like a stronger espresso flavor you may not enjoy it as much. The military latte was a bit disappointing as the matcha didn't seem present at all. It mainly tasted like oat milk and lacked flavor and sweetness. I would definitely recommend the black camo over the military latte but it is personal preference. Service was really quick for how many people were in line, and it's a pretty big space to hangout in. I'd definitely come back again. read more
Stopped in on my recent visit to Chicago and loved the moody, dark atmosphere of the shop. Ambiance was *chef's kiss*. I ordered an iced oat latte Tokyo style and my friend got the military latte. This iced latte was hands down one of the best lattes I had in all of 2024 - their homemade syrup was SO good. The service was also super friendly and the cashier had great banter. Love that this is connected to Green Street Meats too so there is plenty of seating down below. Can't wait to come back next time I'm in town. read more

Such a cool coffee house! This establishment is connected to the barbecue restaurant and it doesn't feel weird. The seating areas are kind of separated but open and you were able to have a conversation in one area without overhearing or getting all the noise from the other side. Me and my friend grab a couple coffees and pastries, and they were really good. The staff is pretty family and will help with any recommendations or explanations. read more

Walk up the stairs and it will lead you to the counter to order your pastries or drinks. Warehouse vibe with tables and bench seatings inside. One of my favorite coffee shops I've been too!!!! Sawada doubles as a coffee shop and bbq food place. The inside is pretty big, so plently of room to grab a coffee and sit for awhile. There is also a huge bar inside making it a great place to grab a drink. REALLY good coffee and lots of tea options too (Matcha, Chai, ect). Highly recommend stopping in here if you are a coffee shop snob or looking for a more upbeat, fun place to grab a coffee or bit to eat!! read more

Sawada is such a unique coffee shop! It's located in a shared space with other restaurants. The inside is decorated with string lights with a warm, wooden interior. There isn't much seating in the area by the register, but more seating is in the shared space. They have an interesting menu and the staff are very helpful in answering any questions. I ordered the high five mocha and was pleasantly surprised by the aroma of orange peel added inside my cup! Highly recommend checking Sawada out for good coffee! They also have a selection of pastries. read more

Yes you can sit at the benches inside to eat/drink items from sawada. The space is shared between sawada and green street meats. You can also sit at the benches in the alleyway.
Is Sawada really open in this time ? I went the other say and it was closed.

How is the noise level? Is it easy to carry a conversation in a group? Am I likely to find space for 6 people at 1pm on a Sunday?
It's a large space, so unless the place is packed you should have no trouble holding conversation or seating for a group.
Do they have non-dairy milks available for the lattes?
Of course! Almond milk, macadamia milk, and soy.
Where is it? There is a lot of construction and I couldn't find the shop.
