Ordered the unagi donburi and saba (mackerel) nigiri, both being quite good. The owner and staff were friendly and seemed to enjoy their work. The space is a bit small but feels cozy, so it may be difficult to accommodate larger parties (6 or more) during busy times. I also went at a pretty busy hour, so the unagi took a bit to come out. I unfortunately forgot to take pictures as the food looked and smelled so good that I just had to dig in. It was a bit expensive on a student budget, but definitely a worthy splurge after an exam. read more

It's one of the best and authentic Japanese tempura udon dishes we've had in the West Coast. We've lived and traveled through Japan, and cook Japanese meals for friends and family. It was really nice to find a restaurant that pays attention to good Dashi broth and serves shichimi with their tempura udon . I know the sushi and teriyaki are the rage in this region, but the SaWa's owners know there's more to Japanese cuisine. Love to come back to try their donburi since it is the name of their restaurant. Well done. We sat outside for lunch, but walked in to pay and use the restroom and noticed the decor. A great Donburi option in Forest Grove. It's a hike from Portland, but worth it. So, go out there, go to SakéOne to pick up a few bottles of Momokawa and venture over to SaWa's Donburi for a bowl. They have a nice location and there's also a really nice park nearby. I can't comment on the food as it took an hour to get a water cup with No water in it! We saw 3 other people up and leave as well so we weren't alone. A friend told me about this place , so I gave it a shot since I was around town and it was awesome! Our server Gean went above and beyond our expectations and service is always a big one to me! They have a really unique selection of vegetarian and vegan sushi that I really appreciate! You get more than just cucumber and avocado rolls here. We got the vegetarian sushi platter and the vegetarian izakaya set, I was really surprised at the variety, that's something that can be hard to find at a Japanese restaurant as a vegetarian or vegan. The sushi was great. they service was horrible. we were seated by one of the employee's gave us menu's and walked away. started talking to a girl at the bar, it took 20 min just get drinks ordered, and that was by someone else. once the girl at the bar left he started helping a different table and taking their order but never once came back to ours. the other person who got our drinks finished up service. we could have ordered more as we were not full but didn't feel like spending any more money here. I'm not really a sushi fan, but this place just opened and we decided to try something new. The Chef's creation from our veg only request was amazing. Crispy Japanese potatoes, zesty sauce, asparagus and avocado, to name a few stood out with each bite. They were also accommodating on the preparation of fish for a scallop roll. The bar seating provided entertainment as we watched how our rolls were delicately prepared. Loud guests were contained in a back room to keep the noise element at bay. This was our first visit to SaWa Sushi and our last.We sat at the bar waited for 15 minutes before I finally asked the Chef who we order from he said oh I can take your order as long as it is not from the kitchen oh great. So we ordered 3 rolls as we were waiting for the rolls we saw the other chef smelling something from a plastic bag and handed it to our chef.That alone was a bad sign to what's next we got our three overpriced undersized rolls that were smaller then a bent hotdog to look like a sushi roll.No one came to ask if we wanted drinks service at its finest not. So we ate our five small bites of sushi rolls and asked for our bill and left won't go back to there restaurant it was terrible at best. Went to Mio sushi and had a real meal that you don't have to smell before you eat it. Stay away they won't be there long. read more

Excellent food. We had the Oregon roll. So fresh and the perfect amount of spicy. We also had a noodle dish, though not sure which one. Also fresh ingredients and the sauce had a lovely tang. The hostess was kind and sat us as quick as she could, even though we had to wait, because there aren't a lot of tables. The only thing that was not quite up to the rest of the experience was the bathroom. They might want to invest in a new door handle with a lock that works. I think it's shared with other businesses, so it's clearly not cared for by the establishment. Other than that, all was quite good. read more
