Found this place while visiting and it was FANTASTIC! Place was clean, and even though it was getting closer to closing, they took our party of 6. Nice people and the orders came out timely. Ordered everything from sushi to the various bowl options and Udon noodles. Tempura was very light and crispy.... exactly how it should be. I can't remember all the names of the dishes we ordered, but the pictures should speak for themselves :) DELICIOUS! We are definitely going back again.

Forest Grove is lucky to to have SaWa's! Sister restaurant to Syun Izakaya, this place has a much more casual feel with a smaller menu, though they have the sushi rolls in common. They specialize in sushi and donuburi bowls ranging from oyako Don, curry, katusdon, and gyu Don. We came in for lunch and got a little greedy. We ordered Kani cream korokke, kinoko butter salad, tuna poke bowl, and an unagi don. Everything was delicious and the unagi Don was huge! Also bring in a further out location, we noticed prices were a few dollars less than Syun, so that's a plus. Our server seemed like a student - she was kind and kept our waters full. We really liked the wooden tables - it reminded me of a Japanese style cabin. I'd definitely make a stop here again when in Forest Grove!

Omakase & Crystal Hamachi Jalapeño

We were visiting Pacific University and stumbled on this little gem! It was lunch time but the restaurant was not very busy. It had really neat wooden tables and lots of fun and beautiful artwork all over the walls. Our server was friendly and efficient. We ordered sunomono, gyoza, tempura udon, and two sushi rolls. The omakase roll was a chef created roll for the day and it had big pieces of tuna and salmon along with shrimp tempura and eel sauce. Absolutely delicious! We also enjoyed the crystal hamachi jalapeño roll which had generous portions of yellow tail, scallops, and tasty wasabi tobiko. We will definitely be back!

The food, service and servings are great! We had a very friendly server , sadly didn't get her name so I could give her a shoutout :) She's awesome. Anyway, Waited for the food to arrive like 20min... which is fine because we ordered Chef's special and 3 other kinds. Also, I get really picky with restaurants restroom. If it's not clean , it says a lot about the staff and food quality :( .. this is based on my experience. But their restroom is super squeaky clean ... and smells pretty neat :) Thanks Donburi for the great food and service ! You're a gem

Philadelphia Roll

We were looking for a new place for lunch the other day while walking through Forest Grove. Stumbled upon this place. We love Japanese food so we decided to stop. Lots of wood and natural finishings, good lighting, and very clean. We were told we could sit anywhere we liked, so we grabbed a table. We only got water (the drinks I thought were a little expensive $7 I think for a soda), which was fine we love water. I ordered the Philadelphia roll, my wife ordered the Kare Don (vegetable curry), and my son ordered the special which was a shrimp and rice noodle dish. None of us were disappointed in our orders. The Philadelphia roll was huge (8pcs) with a wonderful lightly smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. My wife was nice enough to let me have a bite of her Kare Don, and I could say without a doubt, one of the BEST Japanese Curry's I've ever had. 10/10 would recommend. I will be back.

This place was awesome!! I came with my parents and bf and food was amazing and came out quickly. We ordered the Niku Don which had tender beef over rice with some great shaved veggies, pickled veg and some roasted squash. It was so savory and had a lot of nuanced flavor. We also got 4 rolls to share, our favorite of which was the Zen roll. It was like no roll I've ever had before... it was just fresh and creamy and we will definitely order 2 of those next time. Our server was nice, the food came out quickly and the inside of the restaurant was clean and cute with cool Japanese art prints.

We got the Unagi Don (top) and Kare Don (bottom). Delicious!

My bf picked this place as a fun surprise place to go. The decor is really nice. A bit Hawaiian Japan vibes with quality food!

Super Deluxe Nigiri Sushi. Quality is off the charts. Fish was perfect.

Great fresh food and attentive service. Sushi was very good, reasonable for cost as much as sushi can be these days, and tasty steak Udon.

This has become our go-to sushi spot. The food is consistently good. It gets pretty busy on weekend nights, but is worth the wait!

I have been dreading having to write this review, but feel it is my duty both as an avid fan of…read moreJapanese food and a third-generation Japanese person. If I were considering dining at Maru, this is what I would want to know. The staff here are so welcoming, they have really nice chopsticks, and the service is friendly. Beyond that, it is straight downhill. To call this a Japanese-food restaurant is not accurate. Besides the sushi, the food seems to be a mishmash of Chinese and American cuisine with Japanese names. We started out with an order of so-called chicken karaage. Imagine my shock when the server delivered a dish of deep-fried chicken strips with a bright orange sauce on top. This dish tasted exactly like Chinese sweet and sour chicken minus the sour. Instead of pieces of thigh meat, it appeared to be sliced chicken breast. This was clearly prepared by someone who has never seen or eaten chicken karaage. My husband ordered the bento box. I wanted to order one but all four options contained chicken teriyaki and shrimp tempura neither of which I wanted. Hubs went ahead and got one with an assortment of sushi. It also had salad (which was a small handful of mixed greens) Can you think of what was missing? Yeah, rice! He had to order and pay for rice as a side dish for a bento box!! WTH?? No self-respecting Japanese cook would serve a bento box without rice!! I sampled the chicken teri. Oh my god, so dry and tasteless. It also appeared to be sliced chicken breast which explained the dry texture. Hubs said the sushi was fine, fish fresh and rice tasted okay. Oh heavens, now onto my sad dish. I ordered the unagi bowl, clarifying with the server that rice was included. It wasn't visible from the menu picture. She enthusiastically confirmed it was, and that the bowl had a ginger dressing. Yum, I thought. That was the last time for the rest of the meal the word "Yum" came to mind. What was placed before me was this: A wide, shallow bowl with a small amount of rice in the bowl part. It was covered with mixed greens and spinach straight out of a package, not prepared in any way. The unagi was sliced thinly and laid on top. All over the lettuce and seeping unpleasantly throughout the rice was a creamy white dressing with no discernible flavor. Like a drab ranch. NOT the promised ginger dressing. Unfortunately for them, I avoid creamy dressings and mayonnaise. It was a nightmare on a plate. The unagi was okay but a bit chewy indicating either a poor quality or undercooking. I tried to eat the rice and salad part but the dressing just overpowered the whole dish. I left most of it after picking off the unagi. Finally, the rice was not cooked long enough or was not Japanese rice. I felt so sorry for our server. She noticed I hadn't eaten most of my dish and asked me how I like it. I just said I don't like creamy dressings and left it at that. She was so sweet but clearly knows nothing about Japanese cuisine. And her cooks know even less. If you want good Japanese food, stick with Syun Izakaya, their sister restaurant, Sawa's, or Mio Sushi. If you want to play Asian food roulette palate-wise, you might have fun here.

Highly recommended!

Located in the downtown Forest Grove area, close to Pacific University. Seems like a local hangout, and now issues finding parking, as we've always found street parking in front of the place. As we entered, it wasn't very busy, and no one greeted us at the entrance. But no big deal really, as the waitress (possibility manager) sat us at a table close to the kitchen. Service was pleasant and courteous, and on-point with the water refills. The dining area was pretty large and clean. I can only imagine, pre-pandemic, how popular this place would have been. Second time here, unfortunately no a/c to cool the place down. The guy serving us busted his arse to keep the place open for business. We had small samples bites and wanted to leave. $11 Korean BBQ Boneless Wings were glazed up good and not too hot in my opinion. However, the menu offers a lot to choose from, and the pricing is reasonable. Thus far I have not been upset with any of the dishes I've ordered. Would I come back? Yes, it's still a decent spot to hang out at, so long as there's good air flow and nice weather outside.

The only issue we had is the sake flight sampler my husband ordered had to be substituted and instead of the $15 glass option they substituted a $12 glass option (nothing was mentioned in advance) and the okonomiyaki they are promoting is not available (bummer we were really hoping to have that). All that is to say, first world "problems" and nothing was really a problem per se. We also had 5 pc gyoza appetizer and requested steamed instead of fried which they were happy to accommodate. Had some 5 pc shrimp tempura appetizer too. This 1/2 Japanese woman raised in America says -- eat here, it is authentic! Oishii!!!!

We start off with hot green teas & it's so authentic + rich in flavor. It comes in a nice tea pot and remains hot throughout our meal. We move on to get their gyoza & cucumber salad. Their gyoza is always crispy. The cucumber salad is simple but always delicious. We move onto our rolls - he likes the orange snow and I prefer the dragon rolls. They are portioned well. The flavors within the rolls complement each other well and I love the drizzle of unagi sauce. Our most recent visit, we ordered the poke salad. The Tuna was fresh and tasted great. We weren't huge fans of the seaweed salad. We've tried other rolls and have not been disappointed with any. Our family members also enjoy this place when we visit. The service is always quick and we are usually in and out within an hour. Definitely recommend this spot.
