My husband ordered a cheeseburger and I had a black bean burger, with the accompanying sides of onion rings and sweet potato fries, which were really like tater tots. Both of the sides arrived cold and REALLY greasy. The hubby's burger seemed to have been cooked yesterday and reheated. Add one beer and the tab was $37+. Almost all off the food went into the garbage. Please save yourself the aggravation and eat in Tucson before you drive up the mountain. read more

Well, the burger was real good, maybe even closer to a 4 star. It was the getting it, and the paying for it that were the real challenges. BTW, the setting is LOVELY-great views! Walked in around 2 pm on a Sat., one person ahead of me. Half the tables in the place were open-but most of them weren't bused. They seated the couple ahead of me in about 10 min. Single ole me? 28 minutes! And crowds of people started coming about 10 min into my wait. Whoa! Needing to be at the observatory at 3pm, I almost left. Finally they called my name. The waitress came and got my water right away, but was serving a large table of 10, and after 16 min I hailed someone to take my order. It came fast enough, and it was good. The bun was great, meat cooked well and good flavor for the jalapeño burger. I would get it again-IF I dared to go back. The tomato soup was not great-get chips or fries. All in all-it served the purpose. When I went to leave I walked up to the desk because 7 min after finishing my super-fast scarfed burger no one came by to ask if I was done. So, we went Mt. Lemmon just to go for lunch. This is the place we had decided to based on their menu. Well, there is both good and bad. First, they are open but only the outside patio. Very limited seating and a very limited menu. It is more of a bar than a restaurant at this time. The food is still very good! You order at the bar, than find a table. You are given a number sign to put on your table and when your food is ready, they bring it out. We ordered Bob's Burger with a side of fries and two beers. Fries were great as was the. Burger. Everything is served to-go in paper bags. Although the tables are six feet apart, no one enforces social distancing or the warring of masks. Saw a lot of people stand on the patio without masks. Sawmill Run has an abundance of seating with great views of the surrounding scenery outdoors. There's even a bar with a big screen tv if you want to catch up on sports. There's a spacious patio outside, but we decided to sit inside, since the sun was already setting, and it was getting rather chilly out there. The first thing I did after being seated was head straight to the restroom to wash up----it's always such a treat to have a clean restroom with running water after you've been hiking in the woods, and been seeing nothing but unappealing port-a-potties the whole time :) I ordered the veggie sandwich and fries and it was delicious. The vegetables were perfectly seasoned and the fries were shoestring size and complimented the sandwich well. This hot meal hit the spot, and left me full, satisfied, and happy. Now, I thought the price point of the meal was a bit high, but then again, you're on top of a mountain, so I guess choices are pretty limited, right? After being disappointed by the views and menus at the other eatery on the mountain, we were delighted to find the Sawmill restaurant. It looks more contemporary and has a lovely patio. We opted for the patio, and ordered cold beers. The staff was really hustling because they weren't expecting a crowd that day and were waiting for more help to arrive. So service was a bit slow -but they were very gracious and set realistic expectations, so we didn't mind. It was a beautiful sunny day to sit on the patio. We ordered the pulled pork nachos - served on their homemade potato chips. My husband and I shared a sandwich with the yummy sweet potato tots. My friends had a salad and the pizza bites. All were good, and we loved that the menu featured weekly specials and the chef seems innovative. We will be back. read more

Sawmill is near the top of Tucson's Sky Island. For long time Tucson residents it replaced the ramshackled but beloved "Pie Place". They have a beautiful deck to enjoy in the summer and fall. During the winter months there's a fireplace inside to make it cozy! The food is good, but expect higher prices than in the valley. There's a cost to do business on the mountain, increased delivery charges and labor. Most employees have to commute, so please keep this in mind while tipping. The weekends are crazy but if you can get away during the week it's a delight. I really enjoy the Friday Fish Fry! Service is sporadic depending upon the staff. We have seen indifference to the amazing Josie. That girl could give lessons. She wasn't our sever this visit but it was a joy to watch her non stop smile and her attention to details. We visited the Sawmill July 27th and the menu was not only changed, it changed weekly and sometimes daily. Lot of disgruntled guests. Everyone was repeatedly told we are cleaning out our food and want to start fresh. I kiddingly said to my husband I will probably be reading about them in the Sunday health inspector reports. In fact, Sawmill Run Restaurant is one of the very few places that you can do a late lunch or very early dinner at. Otherwise, it is the only place open past 5 P.M. on the weekends, which is 8 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant is in a good location with a large deck outside. The staff is nice. However, the food is just food. I got myself a cup of chili and a burger. The food was filling, but it was served lukewarm and lacked flavor. The burger was dry and seemed like it came from a grocery store. There was absolutely nothing memorable about the food at all. I would consider the food a waste of money, but at least the food is edible and filling. I skipped out on the bakery, but it looks a lot more promising than the food. I recommend trying another restaurant or going down the mountain to eat somewhere else. read more

We really love Sawmill Run! Our favorite items on the current menu are Bob's Burger (spicy!) and poutine. The burgers are cooked well, and the fries with the poutine were crispy. The food is ordered at a counter now, and it's important to stay flexible on menu items--once something is sold out on the mountain, it's sold out. On the drink menu, we recommend the Loma Linda Rita. We wish the hours went a little later for dinner, but there's not a lot of traffic on the mountain during the week. read more

My family came to this restrant before an activity we had planned and it was awfull. The service was fine nothing terrible nothing great, but the food was another thing. I had ordered the ruben which I knew I would like per past expericences, but this wasnt even a true ruben! They forgot the lettice and onions! Plus my ruben mostly concisted of meat and barely any sourkaurt. When I took a bite of my ruben I was hit with a horrible sauce mixed with the meat, by the way its supposed to be thousand island but it didnt taste like it. After a dissapointing sandwitch I decided to split a cookie with another family member to discover that the "cookie" I had orderd tasted stale and old. When we had complained we got another "cookie". Let me say never and I say never order the sugar cookie. This innocent looking cookie tasted hevily of lemon, and dont get me wrong I like lemon but not this heavy of an artifical lemon flavor. Too k a ride on the Harley today from Tucson to get out of the summer heat! My wife and I were looking forward to trying out this restaurant and enjoying a good meal before riding back to Tucson. We didn't get to enjoy that meal. We were seated pretty much right away. After 10 minutes we tracked down the host and asked if we could get something to drink while we were waiting for our waitress. He said sure, but went right back to rearranging and sorting the menus. After being there 20 minutes with no service we opted to leave. I asked to speak with the manager in the way out. It took the staff another 10 minutes to track her down. I've been to this restaurant many times thru different chefs and managers, etc. In general, the wait time to get one's order has always been lengthy, but it's beautiful there and, while the food is pricey, it is usually worth the wait. Today, we waited and watched all the people seated after us receive their food, but we were enjoying our conversation and not overly concerned. When our food arrived, my three friends from The Netherlands received their entrees and the waitress said mine would be right out. I had to strongly urge my friends not to wait for mine and they finally began eating. After 10 min when they were halfway through with their meals, our waiter had not returned to see if all was well and we struggled to get the attention of any waitstaff. Finally, I was told that there was a problem in the kitchen. And several minutes later someone brought a container of sweet potato tots. I was told they would comp my meal which I took "to go" as my friends were finished with theirs. Amazingly, when the check came, they comped $10 instead of the full price. The waiter said his mgr said they could only comp part of the meal since I was taking it with me. What an unpleasant experience in every way. And to insult to injury, my medium rare burger was like shoe leather and the piece of lettuce on it had mushy black mold on it. read more

Because there are so few places to eat on Mt Lemmon (3 to be exact). We came here twice in one day (a snack in the afternoon and again for dinner) For our snack we had the homemade potato chips with BBQ pork, and the Hummus with warm pita and celery/carrots. I would sure have liked to try the Pretzels and cheese sauce, but I could only pick one of the two and I picked the chips. I also got their version of a Moscow Mule. It was good, but not too strong. Both appetizers were solid, I preferred the chips, a decadent mix of crispy homemade chips and salty/crispy and chewy pork atop. It was a little greasy, but a fine split for 4 peeps. The hummus was thick and good, but frankly I make a better hummus at home in my blender. -------------------- For dinner we came back later in the day. The special of the night was pot roast, my sister and bro-in-law both had that. I ordered the meatloaf, I asked for a side of creamed corn (they say they no longer have it on the menu that no one ordered it) The menu also described "crispy onions" on top of my meatloaf and mashed potatoes, but I say no crispy onions (sigh). I ordered the soup of the day (Pozole) instead of the creamed corn. It was huge and a nice classic take on meatloaf. it hit the spot after a few glasses of wine on a cold day. My man had the 1/4 rack of ribs (Prickly pear BBQ sauce I believe) with sweet potato tater tots and the beans. Plenty of food and the staff was very sweet. This place has such potential but is such a disappointment. We went about 3pm yesterday and were the only customers. We chose to sit outside. The menu is lacking so we settled for salads. We got the Cesar salad which was fine, also ordered was the side salad which was fine and then the kids grilled cheese with sweet potato tots. There's only so many options up on Mount Lemmon to get food and drinks. Sawmill Run is one of them and the plus point is that they are open until 8 pm on Friday and Saturday. If you drove up Mount Lemmon in shorts and t-shirt and are now shivering, you must stop at Sawmill Run and have their hot Mocha Latte. You will thank me ! They have beautiful outdoor seating. The service was slow as everybody has mentioned on yelp. But the young and energetic staff make up for it. The servers were really very friendly and helpful in deciding what to order. We went there just for some quick coffee and dessert. The mocha latte was terrific. The mocha bread pudding was okay. Many of the items on the menu were not available, but we went there late evening and that is understandable. Will definitely go again on the next trip to Mount Lemmon. read more

This restaurant was a disappointment to almost my entire party. We had driven up to Mt. Lemmon to enjoy the cooler weather. The Iron Door restaurant had closed for the day, so we decided to give this place a try. We would have been better off eating fast food. My Aunts Au Jus sandwich was flavorless, very little seasoning was used. My Uncles sweet potato tots were soggy and gross (between the four of we couldn't finish them! ) . I'm pretty sure that they had been microwaved! The only good things were the chili my cousin got. It was as spicy (but not too much) and was just the right thickness. And my onion rings were nice and crunchy. This place is over priced for the amount of food you get. We didn't complain because we were tired and hungry - so we just ate and left. I decided to go up to this beautiful place unexpectedly this weekend because I saw that they were having a special of fried lions mane mushrooms with Buffalo and vegan ranch. I am so glad I did! Of course, the drive is beautiful, and works up an appetite. Upon arrival we were greeted and welcomed. Ordered at the counter. Prices were completely appropriate for the quality of food and portion sizes. The taste and texture were both amazing. I absolutely loved that the buffalo mushrooms were served on micro greens. It was the perfect accompaniment. I spoke to multiple employees who were all very kind and professional. I enjoyed the experience so much I came back on Sunday with a friend. I tried the lions mane mushroom burger. I would probably call it more of a sandwich because I expect a different texture from a burger. But it was very good and I would order again. Both my friend and I were very impressed with the food, atmosphere, service and a special shout out to the beautiful patio views! This place is really bad.. First of all this place is not very pet friendly... Dog had to be tied outside of the fence on the patio.. but thats not even why this place deserves less than a one star review... the artichoke dip was sad.. small portions of carrots/celery 3 pieces each, and the dip was pretty terrible. The worst offender was my pulled pork entree.. that came with the soup of the day. The soup (bacon+potato) was OK (very very salty) but manageable, but I am almost POSTIVE.. that (CHEF MIKE aka MICROWAVE) cooked my pulled pork... HALF of my pulled pork was COLD and the other quarter was WARM, and the other quarter was VERY VERY HOT. Disgusting. I was honestly pretty mad but I didn't care to ask for a new plate.. because I knew that they would just warm it up again and serve it back to me.. so whatever. After taking a drive up Mt. Lemmon to see how the fall leaves were looking (they're just slightly beginning to change) we decided to try this new restaurant. Overall it was a pleasant experience, though the layout tends to make it a bit noisy. Really noticeable when kids scream. I bet skiers will flock here this winter! My partner had the grill Caesar's Salad and didn't really care for it that much....the salad dressing could be better. She said she probably wouldn't order that again. I ordered the Grilled Turkey sandwich and it was excellent and very tasty with a chipotle sauce. I would definitely order it again. When my sandwich arrived, I noticed my fries were just warm. So I told the server and they apologized and brought me a HUGE basket of piping hot fries and thanked me for telling them. That impressed me. And the fries were great. It's really nice to have another eating choice "at the top of the mountain" and while their prices are higher, it's not unexpected given its location. Very middle of the road lunch in a beautiful setting. Had the burger and fries, as did many of my lunch buddies. One brave soul chose the duck thigh with risotto off the chef's special menu. I had the Mount Lemmonade (get it???) which was sweet and not at all alcohol tasting. One lunch buddy had the margarita which was so incredibly sour she swapped it for a bottle of Stella. The burger was fine, cooked as requested. The fries were nicely crispy. I glanced towards my friend's duck thigh, and I had to look away quickly. The duck was red. Not nicely pink. Red. My buddy is much braver than I as I previously stated and ate it after googling how raw is too raw for duck. He said his dish was "meh" overall. This same friend hoped to wash it all down with a draft beer but the taps went wonky while we were there. Overall, it's fine. They kind of have a captive audience with a great patio and alcohol. Secondly, you were kind enough to allow my friend and I who were stranded after our car broke down to allow us to stay in the lobby and try to get a tow truck. I apologize if my voice got loud as I was sent to an overseas call center for a tow truck through insurance. Your team was nothing but good to us. Your food is amazing. Your team is amazing. You allowed us to use your WiFi. We loved your place so much that when we were rescued the next day, we bought lunch for our friend who picked us up. My family and I decided to drive up to Mt. Lemmon in hopes to escape the Tucson heat the other day. We didn't know what to expect when arriving to this restaurant, but were pleasantly surprised with both the food and service! My husband got the burger (which he loved), my daughter got a grilled cheese with sweet potato tots, and I got the tri tip beef dip. Best. Beef. Dip. Ever!!! I'm not even kidding, I haven't been able to stop thinking about that beef dip. It was so delicious! I told my husband it'll be worth it to make the 1.5 hour drive up there once a month just for that sandwich. The sweet potato tots were yummy and the fries were amazing! All of the staff were really nice and attentive. The only reason I wouldn't give five stars is because the prices were higher than what they should have been. Don't get discouraged by the overwhelmingly bad reviews. This place is decent. I wouldn't pay these prices for run-of-the-mill (and over cooked) food when there are other options... but last I checked there aren't any other beautiful outdoor seating options In the middle of summerhaven. Of course the owners and managers know this fact. I think the reality is that even in the slow season they are packed from breakfast on through the day. They aren't having any issues filling tables. Therefore they aren't going to go to great lengths to fix a problem they don't have. Details: I ordered chicken which was (as others have stated) overcooked. The plate came out quick and had definitely been sitting under a heat lamp or warmer for some time. I didn't complain - again, this is a high volume place with no concern for getting repeats. The food was edible. If I got the same meal in Tucson it would have got two stars (for reference). read more

Of the eating options in Summerhaven, Sawmill Run is probably the best. Service was friendly and helpful. Portions were a little on the small side ... the pastrami sandwhich was good but not as generous as one from a New York deli. Sweet potato tots were excellent. Coleslaw was good. On the down side, a little pricy for what was served. It's hard to fault the restaurant, though. Summerhaven is remote. Everything must be shipped in and overall traffic probably makes it hard to take advantage of bulk ordering ... so, yeah ... All things considered, worth the stop. Will most likely stop again next time I'm up in the area. (Note: I find myself "grading" this one on the curve based on the options available. Drive up to the Sawmill is worth the price of the food it is a order at the counter and then sit down a waiter will bring you the food to sandwiches and two soft drinks was approximately $45. The sandwiches were good but my hamburger was quite burnt. I asked for mayonnaise and did not get any and there was none at the counters to put on yourself. It's a place to eat at the top of the mountain I wouldn't go out of my way to go there but as long as we were there we thought we would eat I guess you should be the judge if it's worth the money read more

The husband and I have gone a few times for lunch and it is decent enough food. Sad there is no gluten free options unless you just get a salad or sandwich with no bread. The menu is very limited with just 3 salads and a handful of sandwiches. Today I got the pulled pork with no bread. It was pretty good, got the sweet potato tots on the side which were okay. The one downside to this place is the owner not honoring the 20% off coupon that he has posted to his own Yelp review. After we told the server about our checkin coupon, the owner came out to tell us that Yelp put that up without his permission. He said he has a military discount but nothing to help us or say sorry for our "fake" coupon. He should have at leave given us 10% off for the disappointment. Very discouraged with our service. Update. I am sorry to have to do this because everything I said in my original review below was true, but it's not true now. I seriously don't know what is going on with Sawmill Run. What kind of restaurant has no ketchup? We went and they were out of ketchup and had been all week. We wound up buying some at the store down the road and sharing it with other customers. The next time we went there was ketchup but we were told in the future it would not be on the tables. You'd have to ask for it. Making customers uncomfortable is NOT a way to save money. Running out of basics and not replacing them -- from ketchup to straws! -- does NOT make it seem as if the restaurant is well run or cares about the customers. The wait staff is very nice, very professional. I felt sorry for them because this is clearly a management problem. The tasting menu appears to be gone and the regular menu keeps changing. We don't know what to expect on the menu anymore but unfortunately we expect there to be problems that shouldn't exist. And the food is no longer as tasty. Sawmill Run needs to fix these problems. They can start by having ketchup in stock and on the tables, like every other restaurant of its kind. And they need to find one menu, stick with it, and work to make the food good. I'm a Tucson resident and often take spur of the moment trips with my pug. We drove up Mt. Lemmon today to escape the heat, hoping to get a snack at this restaurant. When we arrived we saw several signs saying "no pets." So I headed to their large deck in the back to see if we could get outdoor seating. The gate was locked, and we couldn't get in. A young man who appeared to be a manager/waiter asked me if I had any questions. I said, "what can I do with my dog while I order?' He said, "Don't you have anyone with you?" I replied that if I had I wouldn't be having this problem. He said, "Well, I guess you should've have planned your trip a little better." I gasped and said, "Oh my God that's incredibly rude." He responded, "I was going to help you, but no. We don't allow pets." Then turned on his heel and walked away. He had no reason to be so rude. I was able to get food at the General Store, where they volunteered to watch my pet. And I made sure I told this story to everyone I talked with. I won't be eating there, pet or no pet. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this one- the options for food at the top of the mountain are pretty limited so I wasn't expecting much. Party of 6, awesome server, quick service and good food. Appetizer of Nachos made with house made potato chips were gigantic and very good. Others ordered burgers or salad- all great! Great view from outside deck! read more
