I've lived in downtown Phoenix for nearly 5 years. I frequent several of the surrounding bars and restaurants ... this place used to be staple go to but has severely gone down hill. The vibe is not welcoming and the staff are ego maniacs. It's gotten worse over time. Recently friends and I went there on a slower evening and the staff seemed almost annoyed to be there. Friends and I ordered a round of drinks and we stepped outside for a conversation. We went back in and got the next round. While ordering I interacted with 2 women at the bar. We had a fun interaction and I rejoined my friends. Eventually went back to the bar to close out and one of the bartenders quickly came around from the back of the bar and said " you have to leave". I was completely puzzled and asked him why, he said "they don't want to talk to you". Unbeknownst to me, apparently who I interacted with (which I thought was fun light hearted interaction) wasn't what it seemed... I said "that's fine I have no problem not talking to someone I'm just curious why it didn't seem that way from them and why I would be asked to leave for having a conversation with someone" After a short interaction the bartender turned bouncer seemed surprised I was reasonable and nice to him and said he would "let me stay" but not to talk to the 2 women i earlier had a short and (from what I thought) pleasant get to know you conversation... however we ended up leaving shortly after anyway... This is a specific experience but many of the interactions with the staff and the vibe in the place have been similarly awkward and distasteful. I highly recommend several other locations in the area which are much more inviting and the staff don't make it their own little popularity contest to dictate "who" you can and can't talk to. It's one thing when you're making away around a room, you won't get along with everyone, and if your even single and looking to flirt you don't win every interaction... but when the staff threatens to kick you out for taking to someone, that's just ridiculous . read more

Abel is the best bartender at any of the gay clubs I go to- he's always been above and beyond overall. I had a pretty bad night a few weeks ago and he was extremely accommodating and sympathetic. Getting there: Located on the corner of Garfield and 2nd st. We ubered here from a friend's house who lives close, but I know there is parking lot a block or two away for $1 parking, but I am sure the fills up fast. Experience: I was in town for the weekend visiting a friend in the area and suggested on going here. The inside is really dark during the day and night, but their outdoor patio is pretty spacious. If visiting in the summer, go out on the patio at night. It's very well lit with string lights and they had a DJ outside while we were there. Drinks are good, not too pricey. Have been several times and had a good time. Brought two friend for the first time and sold it as a great place for cocktails. It's a Friday night at like 9pm and I ask the bar tender for the cocktail menu. She said "we don't do cocktails." Last night me and a group of friends stopped by for drinks and the woman bartender didn't want to make us cocktails, she said only beer. When a different bartender asked us what we would like she hurried over and said "I SAID ONLY BEER!" even though we didn't even get to answer the bartender. She was extremely rude and had a horrible attitude. When I asked for her name she mockingly said "what's your name?" I told her my name and then asked her again and she just laughed and mockingly said "that's a beautiful name" and walked away. She refused to give a name. And after me and my friends told her she was being rude she yelled at us telling us to leave. We were all so surprised at how horrible she was. In particular, the owner Anthony, is by far the most impressive and passionate person I've ever come across. Just moved out here from SD. Been here a couple times now and it's always been good vibes. Here tonight and Jose the bar back, def killed the night. I bought a beer was waiting at a table for my tacos, then when I went to pick it up I saw him swipe it from the table closest to the taco truck (mind you, it was full). I tell Jose about it, and he was a dick about it. "Well you shoulda brought your drink with you". I said it was full and I just picked up my food. "I'm sorry but you need to hold on to it." The shot of celebratory Tequila was fabulous -- salt dip and slice of lime served with. Super smooth! Our Old Fashions were lackluster. I had expected a cocktail lounge to nail a basic classic cocktail with gusto. Instead we got pith with our orange peel, no bitters, and no cherry. Music was too loud for the volume of people; the music echo'ed off the walls. The permanent taco truck is a definite plus. That said, their patio is heavenly. Not quite as nice and cozy as their neighbor Lucky's, but their fire pit is an excellent touch. The redeeming factor giving them a 3 star review. read more

I made my first visit to Sazerac this past Sunday as a result of having taken part in the Phoenix edition of The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride. I will plan on making a return visit, so this is just my first impressions of Sazerac based on the approximately 2 hours I spent there. The interior is cozy, dark and fairly spacious with a great bar running the length of one wall and ample seating within. High top tables and bench-like seating along the walls. There is also a roomy outdoor patio area with more high top space and seating in the courtyard. Umbrellas help with shading. The bar seems very well stocked with plenty of local brews and standard fare along with whatever mixed cocktail you would care to order. The bar staff seemed pretty friendly and helpful. I asked to try a certain ale ( can't exactly recall the name - though "monkey" was in the moniker, lol ) and was instantly given a taste. I subsequently ordered a glass and it did not disappoint. I definitely plan on another visit soon to get a fuller impression but can confidently say that Sazerac easily deserves a look. The vibe feels relaxed and hip. Check it out. read more

I would describe this place as a go spot for a good talk and great drinks. All other places in the area were busy, loud and impossible. And sometimes that's ok. But at times you just want to chill. So that's why we were glad we found Sazerac. They have a great patio. And you can see that as soon as you arrive. But somehow we just found tyre right spot right at the bar. The bartender was my favorite guy. He was cool. Always very accomodating and ready to make the perfect drink. The flavors were in point. The music was cool. I would have appreciated better prices. From the good ol' fashioned boulevardier, today's mezcal craze, your little coupe glass holds something more potent, accessible, and fun than the countless craft beers that have saturated the market. But you know what people won't tell you? How dressy these cocktail places tend to be. Sazerac is the one standalone cocktail bar in central Phoenix where I could feel comfortable showing up in flip flops and shorts. In fact the contrast between the intricate and intimate decor, and the casual demeanor and style of staff is a disparity you won't find anywhere else. It's the people's bar. It's a giant party and we're all invited. It's a lot to unpack, and I can spend all day telling you why it's great. You're going to love the drinks. The sazerac itself--a classic of rye and absinthe--is a must. But beyond that, don't miss out on 'Trade Secrets', a remix of the classic Industry Sour (Green Chartreuse + Fernet Branca) that utilizes IPA syrup to mimic the astringent, herbal profile of the Fernet. The beer flavor is prominent, but still allows times for other tastes to share the limelight. And I imagine the Smokin' Berries will be *the* go-to selection no one can go wrong with. It's sweet enough to satisfy unrefined drinkers, but the mezcal shines through enough to please anyone who is all about fine spirits. My only wish is that they'd take a peek at the extensive liquor selection behind the bar and draw inspiration to expand their menu. They are creative enough to publish more than several original concoctions, and I am optimistic about what they may try next. Until then, the dozens of rotating drafts will tide me over. What really pushes Sazerac over the edge into 5 stars is the cigar selection, which almost lured me out of tobacco cessation, and the live music, which is absolutely charming and filled to the brim with local talent. I can get a cocktail anywhere downtown, but where else can I get a total package like this? I don't think they're the best at any one thing, but they are incredibly adept at multiple attractions, and that's what will keep you returning for more. read more

Security guard insulted me as soon as I walked in. On 4/15/21 I went to sazerac to enjoy some outdoor drinking during the pandemic. I presented my ID to the security guard with my mask on and he said: "Just so you guys know, masks aren't required." After we said okay he said "Let me know if there are any ugly people inside who wanna cover their faces with a mask" Obviously I was offended immediately because I walked up with a mask on. I'm disappointed this bar isn't requiring masks as well too because there's an indoor part of the bar as well. Since the governor recently lifted state restrictions, Sazerac has flipped the switch Apache Junction-style--no one is required to wear a mask, and there are apparently no capacity restrictions. Hopefully the maskless bartenders and servers here have been fully vaccinated, as I observed no hand hygiene (or gloving) being performed between sequential customer interactions, payment transactions, and manual drink-making. A single infected yet asymptomatic unvaccinated worker in this milieu could easily infect hundreds of people over the course of an evening. While we're getting closer to herd immunity, it's still too early to safely have everything wide open and to pretend that things are back to normal. The attitude of the bartender was also disappointing--it was straight out of tits-up Rage West Hollywood, circa 2019. Let me start this review off with MARC. This dude has serious skill, he belongs working in a top notch speakeasy. He isn't just a bar tender, he's a true mixologist. I've seen this guy turn well drinks into something you'd pay 15 dollars for in other bars around downtown PHX. We've never had a single drink that was less than delicious and refreshing. Other than that this place is still great. Awesome atmosphere and specials, especially in happy hour. The old fashioned I had for less than 8 dollars was better than most around downtown for twice the amount. They have a food truck and always something going on.
