Went to Scalo last night, it was a special occasion for us. Highly recommend, if only for the food and service. Some of the best we've ever experienced. We tried the seafood risotto and Scottish salmon, both amazing. The service was excellent. I wish I could remember our servers name. He suggested wonderful wine, and assisted us with our orders. Giving this review only three stars, as the restaurant was not air conditioned. The outside temp was 99°, the temp inside the dining room was 88°! No air circulation whatsoever. By the time we finished our meal, sweat was literally dripping from my brow! I truly feel for the servers and kitchen staff who have to work in that environment. If management ever realizes that this situation is truly dangerous for it's patrons (especially it's older patrons) and turns the air conditioning on, it would be a pleasant place to try again. Very disappointed. Put in reservation for window table a week in advance and was not given requested table. When asked about it, the waiter and host, didn't work to accommodate it. When we sat down, we were but 2 seated tables with the table I requested open for another 30min before someone sat down. Service: Waiter was smug and slow. Had to wait for silverware, salad and pepper and drink refills too long. Food: ordered 2 steaks, both were undercooked, especially the Medium-well we orderded; it came out medium rare. Asked to recook (waiter didn't check on doness with us, we had to inform him). They brought it back still undercooked. Lobster tail was dry and stuck to shell Mushroom pasta was lacking enough sauce and was dry. Meatball was hard and dry and overcooked. Tomato was plain and boring. Salmon was delicious. Overall: really disappointed that we didn't get a discount and / or a new steak. Really disappointed no management came to talk to us. Really disappointed we didn't get seating requested. I had been to Scalos years ago. They recently reopened under new management. The place looks nice not much difference. The service was average things took a while to come out from the drinks to the food. The server was somewhat attentive. As for the food was okay but nothing amazing. The bread served prior to the meal was so hard it was difficult to eat. The price point makes this one of the more expensive places in town. I'm not sure if I will return. read more

If I could give Scalo more stars I would. I made reservations and we were seated right away. Gibson was our server. He was courteous, professional, and knowledgeable. The food was absolutely incredible. As we ate, we witnessed many people coming over to compliment the chef (we were seated near the open kitchen). The executive chef (Ruiz) came over and greeted us. He clearly remembered my son and his girlfriend from their date the week before. He also sent over a few surprises for our anniversary. So a couple times in life, you realize you've been doing everything wrong. For example, it's a Friday night, me and the wife are out on the town. We're dressed up, feeling fresh, feeling good, and decide to try out Scalo. We're seated outside, great ambiance and lots of natural light. We ask for a bit of bread, and they bring it out for us to nibble on while we're thinking of what to order. And let me tell you, the bread, it's solid, but the butter... the butter... has a hint of lemon in there, and in that moment I realized all other places that serve bread and butter simply have it all wrong. Just that little hint of lemon turned a simple appetizer into something that made our eyes light up. A little dating advice from Dr. Luke here. If a someone tells you that you two go together like bread and butter, shake their hand, thank them for the date, and walk away. They aren't worth your time. If someone tells you that you two go together like Scalo's bread and lemon butter, you better be marrying them within the week, because they're a keeper. We have always loved Scalo's and are glad they are back. They seated us at a patio seat. Nicely separated from active Central Ave. by a fiberglass divider. We were seated immediately and started with a wonderful bottle of Cabernet and specialty cheese platter. Our waitress was perfect! Informative and attentive without hovering. Our meal was perfect, service was just how we like it! My wife had the filet and I had the NY Strip. Very well prepared. No one has equaled the filets at House Without a Key on Oahu. I went on my birthday on the 10 th and the waiter recommended the fentilai I got food poisoning been so sick since then.

Very expensive, food was not worth the cost. Drinks however were very good. 10/10 on pear martini. I ordered scallops and shrimp risotto and the scallops didn't taste fresh, the service was not the best, our table had empty glasses of water that were never refilled. We had a nice evening dinner here on the outdoor covered patio. With a 1-year-old who can't be vaccinated against covid (yet), we are only beginning to dine out again and only outdoors. We miss "fancy" dining, so we went to Yelp and found this place. My partner had the brazino (fish) which was Mediterranean style prepared and delicious (so I'm told, lol). I had the gnocchi, which I enjoyed but don't think I would crave. The sauce was flavorful but at the same time missing something that I can't put my finger on. Don't get me wrong, it was good just not amazing in my opinion. But give it a try. It may be your thing! The gnocchi itself was really good. I wonder if they might consider offering it with a different sauce in addition to the one on the menu? Please? Lol. Our meal started with the antipasto small plate. There was more than enough for two people, but this is the item that knocked a star off of my review--which is why I didn't want to start my review with it. The items offered with it seemed like they came off of the same line as the pizza prep. Crumbled cheeses, as an example. And it only came with three crostini. If it were me, I would remove this item from the menu and/or serve it with cheeses and toasted crackers you'd fine on other charcuterie boards. Otherwise it just sets up the diner for disappointment. As for the patio, it was perfect for dining outside. We made a reservation to sit under the covered patio, but would have been fine dining near the bar entrance at the less "fancy" tables. That area wasn't crowded at all on a Saturday evening and was first come first serve. The rest of the restaurant was very busy! I'm not sure if there is table service under the uncovered patio or if you order at the bar, but I'd sit there and enjoy the air and good meal regardless of how I would have to order. Overall, a great meal. We will definitely be back. Take it from this professor, A- all around. read more

It's been awhile since I've had good Italian food, and this was fantastic! The Polpo (octopus) was decadent & easy to chew (unlike other reviews) it was delicious. The Tagliatelle was full of flavor, I added shrimp on mine but it wasn't needed. Overall fantastic service & food! Worth the price, which is standard for a nice Italian restaurant. I hadn't been to Scalo since the ownership changed so thought I'd give it a try. We sat on their outdoor patio which was surprisingly comfortable given the 40 degree weather and the pretty brutal wind. Thankfully they have outdoor heaters and the patio is open but still sheltered from the wind just due to its location and setup. The autumn salad with the shredded brussel sprouts was delicious, I highly recommend it. The tagliatelle with mushrooms and truffle sauce was also wonderful. I was definitely not disappointed and thought the menu had a lot of great selections. The waitstaff was also great despite having to come outside to check in on us. I'll certainly be back and if you're looking for outdoor dining as things get colder check out the patio and if you're just looking for great food and good service you'll find it here too! read more

My first Scalo experience was in '94 and it was great! We've made it a tradition to eat here every year the night before we fly home to Virginia. Tonight was another memorable experience for all the right reasons. From the initial greeting at the door to working with Mathew to addressing food allergies directly with chef- tonight was incredible! Scalo is back! Or maybe it's just that I went back to Scalo. Not sure. Been a long, long time since I've been there and I think they closed or came under new ownership or something, not sure. But I went there a week ago and it was fantastic! The service was superb. Thank you Sergio, you were awesome. The food was nothing short of delicious. I regret not taking a photo but I sometimes space out on the photo and forget. That, or the food looks so amazing I dig right in. Haha! The salmon was cooked perfectly! Wow! Crispy on the outside but soft and tender throughout. Asparagus was top notch and the risotto was some of the best I've ever had! We finished the meal off with a glass of grappa. Wonderful experience and terrific ambience before catching a movie at the guild across the street. I'll be back and next time I will remember to take a photo! read more

My experience at Scalo was exemplary. The food and service was incredible! Chef David Ruiz is a genius and Albuquerque is lucky to have him. Our server, Erika, was very attentive and was very well informed about the menu and specials. Her recommendation to try the spaghetti and meatballs was perfect! I highly recommend the blue corn bread, beef carpaccio, eggplant (a great vegan option), and meatballs. The flan chocolate cake was SO GOOD! Not too sweet, a very interesting mix of texture, and my new favorite dessert. Everything was delicious and I'm looking forward to coming back to enjoy more of the spring menu! read more

So we had the misfortune of dinning at Scalo on Father's Day . Scarlett used to be one of my favorite Albuquerque. The food was basically slop and uninteresting, the other problem the ac was totally not working! The staff told us to review as they said they have told the owners about this problem and they said the owners don't want to fix it! This is not how to run a restaurant. I have owned many restaurant and have been a consultant all over the world. listen to your staff! More over do your job fix the ac and the food! This is a great shame for such a great little spot. We decided to eat out for a birthday celebration, so we searched for fine dining restaurants that adhered to local COVID recommendations; we decided on SCALO Italian Restaurant because of its excellent ratings and large outdoor patio seating areas. The four of us each picked our favorite meals: Pennoni (Italian sausage in spicy sauce), Salmone (salmon with squid ink pasta and fried kale), Prosciutto (prosciutto with melon & arugula), and Vitello (ossobuco, with risotto, vegetables and sauce). We all agreed the food and service was outstanding! Perfectly seasoned and cooked, delightful presentations, all delivered with friendly and efficient service. I was here for dinner last Sunday with a friend from high school I hadn't seen in 48 years, and his lovely wife. I got in early, so I sat at the bar and enjoyed their happy hour before my friends arrived. I had a wonderfully prepared whiskey sour, and an appetizer of roasted olives with garlic and rosemary. Perfect introduction for my first taste in this restaurant, both made to perfection. Then my friends arrived and we were immediately seating in their outside patio dining area as requested by my friends. We all had appetizers which we shared: the bruschetta made with local sourdough, cucumber, tomato, radish and balsamic vinegar; insalata di pomodoro; and polpette, with meatballs, house marinara, truffle, pecorino, and fine herbs. We also had the tagliatelle, with hand cut ribbon pasta, wild mushrooms, truffle, and a cream sauce--simply delightful. Scalo is a very good restaurant. All the choices are good, but their real talent sits behind the bar in a guy named Brian. Hands down the best bartender we have found in ABQ. So much that we always sit at the bar. He's personable, knowledgeable and makes awesome drinks. Tell him what you're thinking for a drink and he'll do the rest. Again, the food is good, the restaurant service is good but if you go, hang out at the bar and if Brian is working, you'll be glad you did. read more

I hosted a large (20 person) going-away dinner at Scalo and they couldn't have been more accommodating. The manager Raj was very helpful and communicative leading up to the dinner and the private room overlooking the bar was a big hit. The 3 course meal (entree selection of salmon, pasta, or steak) was delicious and when the chef came up, he was met with a round of applause. The service from Scalo's head server was flawless and the wine and cocktails were always flowing. Highly recommend this restaurant for big parties or just a nice Italian dinner. read more

The service was very good. We started with the Pulpo after looking at photos of full charred tentacles on Yelp, only to be served 4 micro pieces of octopus and a bunch of tomatoes. I had the prosciutto pizza and a side of Brussels sprouts, my husband had the salmon. It was meh. The pizza lacked sauce the sprouts were small and deep fried with no flavor, the salmon was over cooked. We used to frequent the old Scalo and wanted to give this a try. Box checked. Made a patio reservation as continued precautions during the pandemic. At first, we were the only ones seated there, but quickly several other guests joined us. Perfectly heated. Our servers were very efficient bringing waters, bread, appetizer, etc. Our primary waiter was genial and appropriate. Food-wise: We had a meat and cheese board which was underwhelming. Not nearly enough bread for the accompaniments. Entrees were pleasantly prepared, nothing extraordinary but perfectly nice. We enjoyed the tiramisu for dessert which is entirely made in house.
