First, we ordered the Polpo which was amazing. It was refreshing and we loved the onion jam. For the main course we ordered the black truffle gnocchi special of that night and the tagliolini. Both were amazing. Our plates were dirty though with crusted food on the rims. Despite that, if we had only ordered these items, this would have been a 5 star review. But we also ordered sides. The brocollini was under salted. The cavolini lists that it has Applewood smoked bacon and a balsamic vinaigrette but we barely tasted those flavors. We only found a couple pieces of bacon and barely any of the vinaigrette. We did not waste our time with dessert. We asked if the ice cream listed on the menu is freshly or locally made. It is neither and our server could not even tell us what brand it is, only that they import it from somewhere in Italy. The love and care is put into the pasta and the Polpo and we tasted it. Everything else tastes like they cut corners and time. The effort should match the price. read more

For the high price of the food, this was one of the most disappointing meals I've had. I ordered the full dinner salad with shrimp, and my husband and friend both ordered the eggplant entree. Every item was extremely underwhelming. The salad was nothing ordinary and not as large as one would expect for a large portion (other upscale restaurants offer larger salads with more complex flavors for better prices). I would have preferred more greens over the mediocre cured salami found in the salad. The shaved cheese (cannot recall if it was Parmesan or pecorino) was tough and chewy as though it was peeled from the rind. For an extra $9, I ordered the shrimp for this salad, which resulted in 4 small/medium low quality and flavorless shrimp; the only positive thing I can say is they weren't salty. They forgot my shrimp, and they looked so skimpy when placed upon a separate plate. The smoked eggplant tasted as though it had artificial smoke seasoning; it was so overpowering and unpleasant. There was no olive oil drizzled on top for moisture and flavor balance, so it was dry. The onion jam was overly sweet and did nothing to rescue this overly smoked and dry eggplant. The cost of the entrees was on par with the more exclusive Santa Fe restaurants...if you're going to charge these prices, please provide a worthy meal. I won't be returning to Scalos, unless I'm there for the Happy Hour. read more

We decided to go and celebrate Mother's Day at Scalo. This has been a restaurant in Albuquerque for years but this experience today was phenomenal! I had the spinach fettuccine carbonara and a caprese bloody mary. Everyone in our party loved what they had ordered as well. The service was fantastic and our server- Alyssa - was very attentive and friendly and helped make this Mother's Day brunch even better! so met friends for happy hour on a Friday night. The cocktail menu is fun and inventive, my friend asked for suggestions and great suggestions were made. I had the Beauty and it was delicious. Now onto the sad food options. Started with the calamari let's start with the portion ridiculously small for the price, the oil must have been too cool as the coating was not crispy and was way greasy. Arancini was more tater tot with sauce, not flavourful and having had arancini elsewhere this was underwhelming. Caprese salad, with green tomatoes. mozzarella was good. the regular salad again ridiculous small portion for the price. The pork belly wasn't horrible a nice portion, personally not a fan of the relish but that was a personal choice. Antipasto tray well what can I say..... the grapes were ok, the same mozzarella as the caprese, one other cheese was very similar. we asked about the board and the waitress couldn't answer Meats were a salami and the little hormel pepperoni slices you buy in bulk for your pizza. This was a ridiculous board, a few slices of bread no crackers. would I go back? yes for the cocktails and I have not tried the main dishes so I might give them a try next time read more

This was our first time at Scalo's since the new management took over. Unfortunately the service was SO bad. We were essentially ignored all night. It seems that the table next to us was made up of people close to the owners of the restaurant. So our server spent all of his time and attention on that table. Meanwhile we had to ask for bread, chase down our server for drinks, flag him down to order entrees, etc. He never checked on our table unless we flagged him down. I really want to like this restaurant, but it's all the fancy without the quality. I am someone who is willing to drop a significant amount of money on a good dinner every once in a while, but I have to conclude that I'm not going back to Scalo. My salad was soggy, as if It had been dressed an hour before it was served, and the mixed greens were starting to turn. You know what I mean, with those little rotten pieces of lettuce mixed in with the good ones. I expect a chef or sous chef to look at the lettuce and decide not deserve it if it looks like that. The place is right next-door to grocery store, so at least go buy some fresh lettuce if you realize that it isn't good. And the waiter was extremely nice and provided excellent service, but when I used to wait tables I would never have served a salad that looked like that. The entrée was OK, but certainly not spectacular. Just not what I would expect at that price point. The dessert was delicious. I will give them that. I am always game to support local businesses, and if I hear that Scalo has made significant changes, I would consider returning there. But until then, I'll look elsewhere. read more

Yesterday I made reservations for dinner today at Scalo Restaurant for 8:30. I received confirmation of the reservation for 8:30. This afternoon I received another confirmation changing the time to 8:15. I called and explained that we would be coming from Santa Fe to meet our son at the airport with an 8:00 arrival and that I made the 8:30 reservation so that we would not be late for our reservation. The person I talked to said it would not be a problem if we arrived at 8:30. While we were waiting for our son to collect his bags, I received a call from the person I had talked to at Scalo who said that the manager would not honor our reservation because he was going to close early. The seafood pasta had red colored water...2 clams, 2 shrimp and a few calamari...NO flavor. The rack of lamb could not even be eaten, cold and tasteless... the branzino had the same red water...the pizza(cheese and prochitto...yea right....cardboard and mushy). The only thing we had that was edible was the mussels and the pork belly appetizer. So, since the repoening and being in the hood we are one and done with Scalo. Maybe in a year or so once they get their act together.... but we cannot recommend them for anything but cocktails..... read more

In town with family on vacation and found this place on line. The are very attentive to Covid restrictions and have tables spaced out with staff wearing mask which was a plus for us. The service was spectacular. The drinks were quite good. Their food is pleasant but just somehow doesn't quite make the cut. It's extremely expensive, probably double the price of the former Scalo. It's fine and there's nothing per se to complain about, but it's just missing a certain something - most of their dishes I feel like I could pretty easily make at home. They're missing a certain decadence that should come with eating out and charging that kind of price. We've been going to Scalo for 30+ years.. this is new owners.. The server couldn't tell me what a couple of entrees on the menu were. No idea !! I ordered a salad first. It arrived with a yellow broccolini top on it. pickled.. Yuk ! looked bad and taste didn't improve my opinion. then I got Linguini with clams.. I opened the clams and took out the meat until I opened one that was FULL of dirt.. gross.. The server wanted to know if I wanted a replacement (WHAT else would I do ?? eat that one ???). It took probably 20 minutes and my partner had already finished her meal. My replacement was smaller and only OK. Instead of taking it off the bill they charged me 50%. Bad service, Bad food. Don't go here.. Just cross the street and get real food at Frenchish. read more

I've been to Scalo a few times since they reopened, and I am impressed. Every time I've gone the service has been consistently good. Their patio is somewhat enclosed and is warm (unless it's really windy). Every drink I've had has been excellent. Every dish I've had has been terrific as well. Most recently I had the Gnocchi-- at the old Scalo, I remember not loving the dish an thinking it was very heavy. I tried it upon recommendation of my waitress, and it was a great spin on the old dish. It wasn't too heavy at all- delicious. I also like the range of prices on the menu. You can go for a fancy and kind of expensive experience, or get a pizza and make it more affordable. Overall they did a wonderful job of reinventing an old favorite. read more

I'm giving a single star only because we were allowed to make reservations on Mother's Day. The "buffet" was little more than a run of the mill breakfast buffet that did not even include drinks. Specifically, the buffet was $65 plus $3 extra for coffee or tea. We came as a party of 6. However, we all paid separately and still we all were forced to pay a 20% gratuity. (I'll never understand a predetermined gratuity, and not at 20%. Do the servers get it all? What portion subsidizes management?) As well, for such a high end restaurant, the server still had to gather all our credit cards and take them away (out of sight) to run them - low tech. Scalo along with every other high end, full service, restaurant needs to be using current technology, blue tooth, to be able to settle tabs in person. At their prices, there's no excuse not to provide the best and most current technology available. Was the food good? It was okay. The complete experience was not - not for the price. read more

Had dinner at the new Scalo last night and it was fantastic. Easily the best Italian food in the city. The owners, chef and staff are great and eager to make this place work. First, if you make a reservation through Yelp it isn't linked up with their system. This is what we were told when we arrived but they seated us anyhow which I appreciated. We ordered the lump crab ravioli special as an appetizer as well as the buffalo carpaccio both of which were delicious. The bread basket had a variety of breads and was wonderful. Two in our party ordered the tomahawk steak for two which included sides and a bottle of wine. The steak was fine but it definitely was not the 32 oz. the server said it was. It was priced at $150 which in our opinion was way over priced for what arrived. It was ordered medium rare and was more medium or medium well. The wine was very good. One of us eats gluten and dairy free and we ordered the small steak which arrived on a bed of mashed potatoes. They remade it with risotto and it came out fairly quickly. We decided my small steak was better than the tomahawk. The service was very good. The panna cotta dessert was really delicious. We used to eat here years ago when it was under a different owner and our last visit was really bad. So we decided to give it another try under the new ownership. Other than the things mentioned above it was a very enjoyable meal with great service and we'll likely go again. read more

Also, the server never brought us one single dish, didn't bring bread until asked (and wasn't timely) and the appetizer was brought without appetizer plates. The table next to us received stellar service (although they were an 8-top and most-likely had auto-gratuity). The tip reflected the sub-standard service. Also, was never offered a dessert, an after-dinner cordial nor even an espresso. I was planning a large event and wanted to go with a local small business to host this celebration. I contacted Scalo's manager Raj, and immediately, I received a response back. Raj planned with me the entire way, ensuring that all of my needs were met. The event went exactly as planned. We had an amazing wait staff, all attentive and worked seamlessly. In addition, the main server, Raynaldo was the best server I have ever had in my life. He worked the room, ensuring that everyone's drinks were always filled, timing of all appetizers, salads, dinner, and dessert was according to the celebration schedule, and even thanked everyone for coming to celebrate the event at Scalo. On top of this, the food was amazing! I will be back to Scalo to celebrate any type of event. I highly recommend Scalo. Service was horrible! The waiter ignored us and I had to keep asking someone else to get him. We ordered drinks right away and a starter and then he just didn't come back. When I was finally able to track him down for are main meal he acted shocked that we wanted to order. It took him about a half an hour to get our food, I would say that that wouldn't be a problem but the people that came in after us had gotten their drinks appetizers main meals and we're halfway done with dinner. Don't know if we didn't look nice enough or didn't look like we belong there but it was completely unacceptable before we got her dinner we asked if we could get more bread and he said sure our bread didn't get there until after we were finished with dinner and when he brought it he told my boyfriend better late then never and to lap up his sauce with the bread. We then asked for our check so that we could leave and instead he brought a dessert menu and I told him no will just take the check to which he asked if we wanted any boxes for the broth that was left on my boyfriends plate and my one potato we said no and he looked at my boyfriend goes are you sure you don't wanna doggy cup to drink that later?. He was extremely disrespectful. He ended up not even bringing the check his manager did and we never saw him after that. The manager said that he would Train his stuff more however I still will not be dining at this restaurant ever again. Update: We had a gift card that was good until the end of the year and gave with our card to check out, the manager came back and said it was no good anymore because of change of management and that he would give us half of what our gift card was. Okay whatever. So I post on open table and this is the reply I got. "Sorry your evening went poorly. We were glad to try to make it up to you by honoring your invalid gift cards. We will address your service issues with our management and server staff." Well it wasn't an invalid gift card it was good until the end of year.
