Obviously this place is a classic full of all the yummy fried goodies BUT it's also a locally-owned and operated gem. I wouldn't normally call out as amazing a shop owner but here is the story: our babysitter was bringing our children home when a truck with unsecured metal objects had something fly out the back and directly puncture her tire. The person drove-off and she pulled over directly into the Scenic Drive-In lot. Not only did they come check on her and the kids but the cook, who turns out to be the owner of the Drive-In came out and changed her tire!!!!! The server came out and said the cook would help us and so of course we offered him money, which he turned down and then we discovered he was the owner. No one does that anymore - I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for his kindness. I always prefer supporting small businesses but this says a lot to me about the quality of the humans in the establishment! In a world where so often people turn a blind eye, this man is a new type of hero to me. A good, kind human being and that makes me even happier to patronize the restaurant. Man O Man, this is really a throwback!! This place has been around forEVER, ate here as a kid over 50 years ago~ New or different owners and a bit of a different menu. Used to their hot dogs as a kid, today I tried the Knockout burger. Not the best burger I've ever had but dang good. Basically it's a cheese burger with avocado , bacon served warm and could have been pepper bacon , jalapeños, lettuce & tomato ~ I opted out of the jalapeños tho. This is TOTALLY a VERY GOOD burger, and yes it's BIG however easy to devour! They also offer a Knockout HotDog too, now this thing is BIG!!!! My mom said it was really good...she ate almost all of it so it must have been. Also had the onion rings just have something different.....plenty in the order served with ranch ~ they were OK, never had the fries so I can't compare.....would try the fries next time I am in town~ The real HERO is their milkshakes, we shared a medium Chocolate milkshake made with chocolate ice cream, simply irresistible making my mouth water just writing about it. A huge selection of flavors to choose from too If your in Modesto, on Scenic Drive check Scenic Drive In out you will enjoy this type of fast food, all made to order ~ they are CLOSED on Sundays, FYI. I recently moved back to Modesto after 35 years. The Burger I had today is only eclipsed by Notorious Burger in Carlsbad, Ca. Your burger (the Dempsey) was so damn good. Their is shaded seating outside, so no indoor dining. I'm ok with that, I've been eating burgers here for a very long time. Ok, let's get straight to the point. Yes there is new hamburger joints popping up everywhere. Habit burger, Farmers brother, Red Robin's, etc. but this is the home of the Knock Out Burger. If you can handle fresh jalapeños and love avocado and bacon. You must try this Burger. The beef patty on this burger tastes like a beef patty. Not a fast food hamburger patty. I've had some bad burgers in my day but this place ranks up there with the worst. Lived in Modesto for 42 years and never ate here, I wish I would've kept it that way. Ordered the Knockout burger, Jack Dempsey Pepperjack burger, regular fries, onion rings, knockout fries, Oreo milkshake and Raspberry milkshake. Literally nothing was good at all. Let's start with the burgers, the burgers were frozen patties that reminded me of school lunch burgers only worse. Zero seasoning and tasted like they were boiled. The fries were burnt and also not seasoned. The onion rings were Burt and the knockout fries had jalapeños that weren't fully ripened and had zero heat. The milkshakes smelled and tasted sour like the milk was expired. The Oreo shake is not made with Oreos and tasted like cheap cookies were used. The raspberry shake was just raspberry syrup and tasted way more like vanilla than raspberry, no taste of raspberry at all. I will never return here and I will never tell anyone to come to this place. Maybe they were once good but they are absolute trash now. Waste of time and money. read more

The fries were what ever. Soggy even though they were fresh. If ordering fries ask for them well done. It's like a fluffy shoestring fry, fat lace haha. Anyways I didn't care for it. This review was left about 2 weeks later but I'm glad I waited. The burger was messy however they did make it worth the $6. Big piece of meat seasoned well along with a bunch of onion rings and bbq sauce. Definitely try it for yourself. 3 1/2 stars for now because I thought it was a little pricey. Scenic drive-in is one of the absolute best hamburger joints I have visited. Be aware that they don't begin cooking until you order so if you're stressed for time call in your order. The knock out burger is my favorite, always as ordered and perfectly cooked. The onion rings are always golden brown and the portions are generous. The staff takes their time preparing food and it shows. It's sometimes difficult to navigate across scenic during high traffic. This is a great place to get burgers or typical drive in fare. It's known for the knock out burger that has jalapenos bacon avocado as well as the usual burger salad toppings. (You can ask for no jalapeno of course). The Pattie is a bit smaller than I like, but hey...2 patties are completely legal. I like the orange cheese too.who knows it's legal name...maybe processed gooey gold. Anyhow it's yummy..they also serve lots of other fried and grilled items like fish and chicken and French fries. My absolute favorite item, however, is the huge milk shake which comes in a zillion flavors..my favorite is Vanilla Malt. I get the large which is so big it takes two hands to carry it.I forget the price, but for the size it's less than most places serving shakes. The pineapple is good too..strawberry..yum! (I may have to shoot on over there in a minute) That huge shake or malt can easily serve two without making one of you wish the other would run into an old buddy outside the car while you drink to your heart's content. Best burgers in town. Hands down. Yes, it's next to a cemetery- if that bothers you- call ahead and get your order to go. Most would want to go for the big "Knockout" burger, topped with avocado, bacon, cheese and hot peppers (probably too many for most). There's also the "Round One" which has everything except the beef patty. Now a vegetarian, the Round One sans bacon is what I crave. And the french fries are simply perfect. Did I mention the soft-serve ice-cream machine? I always liked how they write your order down on your bag and hand it to the cook- no fancy computers here. As much as I'd like to write a glowing review, my husband and I and our best friends decided to meet for a burger here. It's been a couple of years since we have gone there. The Positive: The service was quick and they were very friendly. The downside: The hamburgers were nothing to rave about. All 4 of us complained about the same thing...no flavor. We were very disappointed. Also my chocolate milkshake hardly tasted like chocolate. Another disappointment since I rarely get a milk shake. Also, they really need a restroom. Its also a little steep for an old burger joint that doesn't have the "best" burgers around. Sorry folks, these are not the best burgers. Not even close.
