These guys came to my apt after a month of getting bit by mysterious bugs. I found about them online and decided to try to rule out bed bugs. They came, and went, I got the fancy see how the dog can smell the bugs in my glass jar routine, and the verdict was "no bed bugs." The next morning after having been bit again, I poked at a speck on the sheets and low and behold it popped, it was full of blood! It turned out to be a bed bug. I called Scent Tek immediately to tell them and he offered to come out with two dogs the next day. He showed up with one, did the routine, and found nothing again. He proceeded to tell my property manager that this situation wasn't that big of a deal. This immediately put us on the "bottom of things to do" list at the property management company. Wow, we're getting bit, shelling out money to get told its not the bug we believe it to be, and at this point the exterminators won't come out bc the dogs found nothing. I was so incredibly frustrated I can't even tell you. So final conclusion, 1. Buy some diatamacious earth, sold at Rainbow. Sprinkle it sparingly around the trouble area, vaccum so it goes everywhere...you just need a fine layer of this stuff on everything...it will cut up the bed bugs bodies and they eventually die. Also, there are some traps out there , try some of them out, but whatever you do, don't bomb the place, it only makes them spread even more~ Do not TRUST THE DOGS !!! The dogs run about $160 an hour. Oh also, I know of two other people who had dogs come over, find nothing, and then they turned out to have bed bugs. read more

We've been getting bitten for months, but extensive searching and research and passive traps have turned up no bugs of any kind. Until you know what's biting you, it's pretty difficult to treat appropriately. So we were going nuts. I've got health conditions that mean I over-react to any kind of bug bites, so I'm covered in hives as well as bites and getting sick from too many antihistamines and lack of sleep. I called Orkin and they sent a guy around. His inspection was semi-thorough, but didn't impress me after weeks of searching for bedbugs in every possible way in every possible crevice. He didn't find anything but was pretty eager to upsell us some services. I said 'screw that' and pushed that little button up at the top of the page that let me schedule an appointment without even having to make a phone call (which is great because I'm a little deaf). I was surprised at how soon I could get somebody in, but wasn't gonna argue. Scent Tek come in civilian garb, so your whole neighborhood doesn't have to know (or panic). I'd already informed my (friendly) building management that there was a possibility of some sort of bugs, just in case, but I would have appreciated the privacy a lot more if I was still living with certain other jerk landlords or crazy neighbors. They were running a few minutes late, but they called ahead of time to let me know. Kevin and Rhys the dog were great. I apologized for the disaster because I'd already taken the bedroom apart six times to look for bugs, and I haven't wanted to have my cleaning help come in in case they got infected, so the place is trashed. I also had passive bed bug and flea traps out, none of which had caught anything. Rhys went to hang out in my bathroom for a few minutes while Kevin talked to me about what had been going on, observed the big red welts on my neck, and did an extensive bed-take-apart search to look for bugs. I hadn't been able to flip the box spring over myself, but he did, and dug around and - voila! A bug! You would not believe how happy I was to be handed a bed bug wrapped in Scotch tape. Three months of being bitten by something, folks. Three months and I finally knew how to proceed! Kevin kept looking and found no eggs, just one bug and some poop, confirming his earlier suspicion that if we had a serious bug infestation we'd have way more bites. (MORE? AIGH) He brought out Rhys to have a sniff around for more. Rhys was a little over-excited but did his job very well, if a little distractably (more on that in a minute) and sniffed the whole bedroom over without finding anything interesting. We came back out to the living room to sniff and examine my sofa and recliner, and - oh dear. See, in trashing the bedroom I had moved a large pile of stuffed animals out of the bedroom and they were all over the living room floor. Rhys is toy-trained to do his job (which is considered way better than treat-trained these days), so a big pile of stuffed animals looked a lot like heaven to him. Kevin persuaded Rhys to sniff the furniture as well as the toys, and neither of them found anything more. Rhys went back in the bathroom to chill while Kevin discussed the results with me and how to proceed. He was able to take a credit card right there, and I'll have a receipt for that and the results of the inspection in my email within 24 hours. I can take that - and my scotch-taped bedbug - to show the exterminator and heat box companies. ScentTek doesn't work with any exterminators, but Kevin gave me three companies and suggested one in particular as being best for our particular needs and situation. He also said that it's remotely possible that there was just the one bug, and I might want to give it a few more days and see if that does it. (I have trouble believing that one damn bug could do all this, but it's accurate - we only get a few bites each night.) I petted Rhys and got slobbered on and said good-bye and thank you. I am SO RELIEVED to know what species has been biting me and that now we can move forward instead of going crazy looking for bugs we can't find and crazier with itching and sleep loss. I would probably have paid twice the rate these guys charge to get an answer, but I'm also really satisfied (and have evidence!) that they did a good job and I've gotten good advice on how to proceed. (I HAVE A DEAD BUG IN SCOTCH TAPE YOU GUYS. Only bug survivors will understand why that was worth a couple hundred bucks to me easily.) I highly recommend these guys for peace of mind and identification. Just don't leave too many toys around to distract the dogs. read more

We had possible bed bugs invasion due to our recent trip with Carnival Cruise. Although there were no visual sign of bed bugs, I had been bitten 3 times within 3 weeks span. After my two young children got bitten as well, I decided to take some actions. After browsing through Yelp, I found Scent Tek and decided to use their service. Brent and Curly came to our house, and Curly alerted that there were bed bugs in 2 beds (in 2 different bedrooms) and in the brand new suitcase that we brought to the cruise. We treated the whole house with heat treatment. After the treatment, Curly came back for a follow up visit. Luckily, the treatment seemed to work since Curly didn't show any interests in any of the beds and suitcases. Scent Tek people are very professional. I left a message on a Sunday morning, and I got a call back in 4 hours. They were on time and always very courteous during house visits. Of course, I am always happy to give work to furry friends, especially because their rate is reasonable. Therefore, I am giving them a 5 star... After receiving mysterious bug bites and being misled by an unprofessional company (Bay Area Pest Elimination, now closed) that we had a bed bug problem, my husband and I decided to call in Scent Tek. After leaving a message, Kevin called me back within a few hours and patiently listened to my timeline of bug bites. Kevin was able to set us up with an appointment the next day, and I was impressed with their ability to accommodate us in their schedule. Brent and Curly came over on time the next day and found absolutely no evidence of bed bugs. Brent was very informative about bed bugs, and he showed us a sample of real bed bugs in a glass jar. Brent also hid the bottle underneath our couch cushions to show us how Curly would respond to the scent. When I kept receiving bug bites after moving about a week later (we had already planned the move before the bites began), we had Brent and Curly come over to our new place just to double check for bed bugs. Although Curly gave one positive signal in the bedroom, Brent found nothing after thoroughly searching the bed and was convinced it was a false positive. Brent had hid his glass jar of bed bugs in the closet near the bed, and he thought Curly had caught a whiff of the scent by the bed. In addition, when Curly came into the bedroom while Brent and I were talking, she showed no interest in the spot that she had signaled positive earlier. Although the false positive made us freak out that maybe we really did have bed bugs, the large number of bites I had, the lack of any physical evidence (live bed bugs, fecal staining, blood stains, or skin casts), and the negative results from our old place convinced us that we couldn't have bed bugs. Long story short, our new place had a flea infestation! I had received bites before moving because we had both places for a few weeks and were going back and forth dropping off our stuff. I was getting bitten at the new place but didn't react right away, and I only noticed the bites hours later or the next morning when we were back at our old place. Brent and Curly are a professional team, and we were very happy with their work. Brent emailed us inspection reports the same day for both inspections. We received a discount on the second inspection because it was a follow-up visit. Scent Tek is very reasonably priced, and we don't regret spending the money to confirm that we didn't have bed bugs. I called Scent Tek after finding a bed bug on one of the two beds in our guest room and after treating our adjacent property for bed bugs (we used Advanced IPM, which we were very happy with) a couple of weeks prior. Jeff and Murphy arrived on time, were personable, professional, and gave a very thorough inspection. Jeff even had Murphy leave the room to move the top mattress of the box spring to further isolate whether the box spring or the mattress were of interest to Murphy. Although Jeff could not find visual evidence of bed bugs on the objects Murphy was interested in, he provided several options for what we can do including putting a bed bug-proof cover on the box spring and possible steaming the recliner ourselves or hiring Advanced to treat it. He made recommendations from the perspective of "if it were my home, I would..." which I really appreciate. He also confirmed that our adjacent property was bed bug free (no 100% guarantee, but provides a good deal of peace of mind). Highly recommend the service! read more

I was very pleased with my experience with Scent Tek. I was getting bug bites for about a week and became concerned about bed bugs. My sister mentioned that there are dogs that specifically detect bed bugs (she had to deal with them when she lived in NY) and referred me to Scent Tek's website. What I liked about Scent Tek: 1) Making an appointment online was quick and easy, and I received an appointment confirmation email along with instructions on how to prepare my residence for an inspection. 2) Kevin (human) and Rhys (dog) showed up on time (even a little early). 3) Kevin was very professional and friendly, and Rhys was very cute (ok, I know that's not relevant). Kevin first did a visual inspection of my bedroom without Rhys, including lifting up my mattress and box spring, checking for signs of bed bugs. After Kevin was done, Rhys then sniffed around my rooms, trying to detect them. 4) Kevin was very thorough, knowledgeable, and personable. His demeanor was very calming, which helped me since I was very stressed about the possibility of bed bugs. He asked many questions about when and where I was noticing the bites and if I had any insect sightings to narrow down the types of pests I might be dealing with. Before Rhys inspected my place, he gave a thorough description of what to expect if Rhys did find something. After neither he nor Rhys detected bed bugs, he gave me a primer on how to detect bed bugs in the future and talked to me about what else might be causing my bites. I also got Rhys's business card so that I could call/email with further questions if needed. About a month ago, our neighbors gave us a used sofa and ever since I have been freaked out that by taking it we invited bed bugs into our home. Though we had no bites and no physical traces, I convinced myself that I had made a bed big rookie mistake in accepting the sofa. After spending several sleepless nights worrying about and googling the blood sucking critters and experiencing phantom itchiness, I called Scent Tek for some peace of mind. Kevin arrived with his little dog and listened to all my paranoid questions, Kevin and the dog searched the house and came up with nothing. Kevin spent a lot of time talking me off the bed bug ledge and generally calming my fears. I came home from London. The next morning I woke up and realized that I had bed bug bites. I went on Yelp and found out about Scent Tek. It was a Saturday, so I didn't phone them thinking they wouldn't be working on Saturdays. Wrong, they do work on Saturdays and would have come out. On Monday Kevin came out and very professionally and calmly used his wonderful dog to find exactly where the bed bugs were in my home. They were on two sweaters I purchased at a very nice shop in London, on my suitcase and on my dresser. Kevin recommended an excellent exterminator,Omega Pest Control, who came out the next day. After two exterminations two weeks apart, Scent Tek came again and after a very thorough investigation determined that I was bed bed free. I had an excellent experience with Scent Tek. In fact, I can honestly say that I could not have gotten through the experience with them. I felt that they were there for me through out the process. In fact, Kevin stated that they would work with me until I was bed bug free. Another satisfied customer. I spent a lot of July traveling and staying in different hotels. I normally inspect my hotel rooms before I settle in, but there was one I forgot to inspect. Fast forward to August and I am getting mystery bites on my arms at night which causes me to worry about bed bugs. I contacted Kevin and explained what was going on; he didn't think it was bed bugs based on my description and suggested I wait a little longer to see if I continued to get bitten before he came for a visit i.e. charged me money for a visit. I agreed, but ended up calling him the next day because I just needed the piece of mind. Kevin was easy to get a hold of, and accommodating when setting up the appointment. When he arrived at my apartment he very professional and communicative about the process; when I asked, he also explained that Rhys, his dog, has been single-scent trained for bed bug detection by professionals who also train dogs for detection of bombs, drugs, etc.. He put Rhys, in my bathroom while he interviewed me about the situation and the bites I've gotten, he also did a visual inspection of my bed. Then he got Rhys and had me wait in a place where I could still see what they were doing but where I would not be a distraction to Rhys as he worked. They inspected both my bedroom and living room, as well as some clothes I had quarantined in plastic bags (which Kevin patiently waited for me to unseal before he took Rhys in for the inspection). In the end there were no bed bugs, but Kevin did offer to come back free of charge if I continue to be bitten. My daughter moved into an apartment that turned out to be infested with bedbugs. She wants to escape the infested apartment and is extremely concerned that all her belongings be cleaned of bugs before moving them to a new place. The first four pest control companies I spoke to said they would only treat the apartment. They would give advice during the inspection and treatment but taking care of personal belongings was her task, not theirs. How is she supposed to treat or know how to treat fragile things like books and musical instruments? I called Scent Tek and left voicemail. Kevin called back within the hour. It was a completely different experience than my calls with the others. Kevin was focused on my daughter's need, while the others focused on the buildings. He spent all the time on the phone I needed to understand the steps my daughter will take to move to a new place confident about not bringing the bugs with her. I called the Dept of Public Health, the EPA contact and renters groups as well pest control outfits. Of all those I was able to reach, Kevin was by far the best. I was suffering from mysterious, long-lasting bug bites (new bites every day) but my husband was not. I finally called North Point Pest Solutions. Hugo found a bed bug almost immediately. We used Scent-Tek to determine the extent of our problem. Both North Point Pest Solutions and Scent-Tek couldn't have been better. We recommend them highly. Having bed bugs was an awful experience, but hopefully it'll never happen to us again. A word to the wise: Don't bring your suitcase into your bedroom. Unload it in the garage, dry your clothes at a high temperature (or dry-clean), and put the suitcase outside in the sun so that the heat can kill any bed bugs who came home with you read more

This company is amazing. The owner(s) of this company run their business in a way that all should. I called Scent Tek because I suspected that I accidentally brought home bedbugs from a stay at a motel. My girl friend suffered many bites in the pattern left by bedbugs, but we weren't sure if they were from the motel, if we had carried them home or it if was from something else. I called and spoke with a Scent Tek rep and with great patience, thoughtfulness and intelligence he listened to what was going on and he shared his experience. We developed a plan to approach the situation (which started with us waiting a few weeks to see if the bites continued) because he felt it might not be bedbugs or they might have just bitten at the motel and not have been carried home. He clearly knew the biology and natural history of bedbugs. It turned out the bites didn't continue (as he predicted might occur) and so it was likely either just from being bitten at the motel. Because he was willing to establish the situation before charging us he didn't earn any money from our encounter but did earn a great deal of trust from me. I am most grateful to Scent Tek for their services. I had tenant from hell in my rental prpperty. She complained about bed bugs from day one of moving in to the property. The renter got Orkin to do an inspection. Orkin came and inspected and reported that there are bed bugs in the house, between the walls, and in the base board. Stating that I will have to spend 4000 dollars to do a thermal treatment. This was a self serving inspection. I called another pest control company and they recommended Scent Tek for a canine inspection. Brent and Curly came over to do the inspection. They concluded that there was no infestation at all. Brent also said that there is no fecal matter present to show that there was ever any bed bug infestation. It saved me a lot of money. read more

Great service - spot on, Yelp. My wife woke up with bite marks on her arm and we found a small bug in our bed. Oh crap, bed bugs (we had recently returned from a trip to Vegas). Submitted a request online and called and left a voicemail around 9AM and heard back that a team could be out same day. Our service tech looked at the bug we found and calmed any fears immediately that it was a bed bug. Him and the pup were extremely friendly and tested out apartment berg quickly - sweet, no bed bugs! He then went above the call of duty and educated us on bed bugs (showed us the sample, how to look for and prevent them) and offered to look at pictures of any future bugs for free. I had bed bugs in a previous apartment, went through a few months of treatment and moved to a new place. Had a person from a local pest control company inspect and say the new place seemed free of them. But I wanted the peace of mind of a second opinion. Scheduled an appointment fairly quickly. They were professional and very helpful. We did not have bed bugs but did have rodent mites. Even though they do not specialize in rodent mites they offered extremely useful tips to manage the problem until we were able to remove the rodents. Our home is very large and bed bugs had spread to several areas before we realized what we were dealing with. I promptly moved out of the house and contacted several Pest Control Companies who wanted to treat the entire house with chemicals. I was totally overwhelmed by everything. We then heard about Scent Tek through a smaller pest control company. I called them immediately and Kevin responded. He was very patient and we talked in great detail about my situation and his service. Two days later he was at my door with Petey. Petey targeted one mattress, two couches and a chair - all in different rooms. We promptly disposed of, or encased, all the targeted furniture. I then thoroughly steamed the surrounding areas - many times over. We also put Diatomaceaus earth in all the outlets. We went six weeks without a bite and I was just beginning to relax when a houseguest may have been bitten on Thanksgiving - big groan. I immediately called Kevin. It was like talking to an old friend. He was again very generous with his time. Since I did not follow up with a pest control company and aggressively treat with chemicals, it is possible that I may still have some bugs hanging around. Still, nothing compared to what we had before. The dog will make a return visit next week to pinpoint where, and if, there are still bugs. Hopefully, we can deal with this ourselves. I highly recommend this service. To us it is worth having the dog out two or even three or four times, if we can avoid using chemicals. Prompt, professional, and cute to boot! Unfortunately, Curly was unable to detect the bed bugs on the first inspection. That is why I rated them 4 out of 5 stars. 1 week later, we pull back the mattress cover and there they are, dozens of them, right along the seam at the head of our mattress. HORROR!!! I emailed Scent Tek and informed Brent of the find and he and Curly came back out to our apartment the very next day at no charge! We already knew where the problem was in our room, but we hadn't been able to find where they were hiding in our girls' room. Brent found them almost instantly! After traveling around quite a bit and moving into a new apartment in SF, I discovered a group of bites on my back, arm (yeah, just one arm), and ankles last Saturday. After thoroughly freaking myself out reading about bed bugs online, I called Scent Tek Saturday night and left a message asking for an appointment. I thought there would be no way I'd hear back from them until Monday, but Kevin called me back Sunday afternoon to set up an appointment for the following day. Kevin came on time with "Sherlock Hound" Rhys, a cute little Aussie Shepherd/Dachshund rescue dog. He looked at my bites and listened to what I thought was going on in my apartment and then spent some time educating me about bed bugs and what Rhys would do. Then, he let the dog go to town. Luckily, after running around and checking every nook and cranny out, Kevin and Rhys found no bed bugs or evidence of bed bugs in the apartment. We then discussed the likely source of the bites - bugs from outside that came in through the windows left wide open while moving in for several days - and Kevin provided me with lots of great information about how to avoid bug bites in the apartment and how to avoid tracking in bed bugs and other critters from hotels. Finally, Kevin pulled out a couple of small containers with bedbugs and asked if I'd like to see a demonstration of what happens when Rhys detects bedbugs. He asked me to distract Rhys for a couple of minutes in another room while he hid the containers, and then I let Rhys go. Rhys ran around my living room for about 30 seconds before he lifted a chair cushion up with his nose, revealed the bed bug container, and did a bed bug dance for Kevin letting him know they were there. I couldn't be happier with Scent Tek! I would recommend them to anyone who is worried about bed bugs. After finding what I thought were bed bugs, I scheduled an appointment with Orkin. They told me I had bed bugs and encouraged a $3K heat treatment. After feeling really nervous about dropping that amount of money, I called Kevin after reading all his reviews. He graciously answered all my questions and told me to schedule an appointment with ATCO Pest Control. Turns out, I didn't have bed bugs at all! Brent and Curly came out and gave it another glance and confirmed that we have beetles, not bed bugs. Could not recommend these guys more! If you even have a question, schedule an appointment.
