Walked in en route to the Village in the morning and were in search of coffee and pastries. I got sensory overload upon stepping foot inside. There was a bakery section with all sorts of desserts and pastries in the front and seating area in the back. There is also another deli section in the back where you can order soups and sandwiches. Everything looked so good! It took us forever to decide on our order. Decided on a chocolate eclair and coffee.

Beautiful bakery, very busy and efficient, quick service. Reasonable pricing for elegant and beautiful creations. Cakes, pastries, cream puffs, cookies, various croissants, breads, rolls, donuts, coffee drinks. I purchased chocolate dipped butter cookies: OH MY GAWD, so good. I will probably visit this place again before I leave town.

Oct 20, 2025. Tourist trap with insane tourist trap prices.

October 19, 2025 A tourist trap with tourist seriously inflated prices. It's popular only because it's been there a long time. That's all. You can get bakery items like this at your local Vons, Safeway etc... in the bakery section just like Schats for half the price. Just sayin.

This particular location is in Mammoth Lakes. I dropped by here twice but I wasn't able to get in the first time cuz I didn't know that they close at 6pm. So I went early on my next visit which was 3pm. To my surprise, they were already closing their doors and when I asked why, the lady wasn't able to give me a reason why. It seemed that they close the store when they feel like it. However, they let me in to grab one item quickly as promised. Because of this, I wasn't able to choose properly what I really wanted so I grabbed one item that's on top of the shelf. It wasn't something I really liked. I was glad though that I was able to snap a few pics.

Adorable little bakery. Love that they have freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh bread. Come early if you want the fresh juice because I was told they do sell out.

This location was very different from the other one in Bishop. It's def smaller and less items than the other one but still you get the fresh bread and goodies you crave. I absolutely love their fresh orange juice and don't mind paying those $7 for it. Love that they had a warm section with fresh breakfast croissants for those who are on the go like us to start a hike. They have a great seating area and nice views in the back to relax and enjoy your sandwich. They have a great sandwich station and you. A build your own sandwich which is great and very convenient with fresh ingredients and Bread most of all. Their coffee is great and we were able to try their hot chocolate with cinnamon and it was amazing! All the goodies we got and pastries were great! They even have a refrigerated area with drinks and jams and honey you can take home. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and spoke Spanish which I absolutely love, they had our orders out quick. Very hard working for sure. Love that they have this location as well for those who are in the area. Can't wait to visit again when we are in town. Def a must and love that they open early as well. Bathrooms were clean and love the tulip decor they had while making your way to the bathroom cute touch for sure. There is a big parking area so that's not a problem. Love the location as well it was close to our BNB.

The best sandwiches hands down! And the fact that they close at 3pm and still willing to make a sandwich with only 5 mins to close! A big shout out to the crew!

Haven't been to Mammoth in years but used to go a lot when we were kids and I remember going to Schat's. I had stayed a couple nights in Bishop a few years ago and ate at that Schat's in the morning so I thought the Mammoth location would be about the same. It's quite a bit smaller and still a full bakery but nothing like Bishop so just know that. I couldn't find pricing on anything anywhere except a price for a dozen donuts at $32.50 which seemed high but I think that might have been for any donuts such as the fancier ones. I tend not to buy anything if I don't know the prices but we did pick up a sandwich in the back. They didn't have all of their breads available (I'm assuming because it's not only the off season but a weekday) but a pastrami on rye was good and it came with a pickle wedge and chocolate chip cookie.

Schat's has been around since forever and I've been coming here year after year. The bakery items are always fresh and tasty. Their sheepherder's bread is a must try! It's so fluffy and the crust is so good. They come in original and different flavors as well. They serve sandwiches, and I like to order it with the sheepherder's bread and roasted turkey. The turkey was warm and delicious. A whole sandwich costs almost $18 (doesn't include cheese or avocado), which is too expensive in my opinion. Yes, the sandwich was really good, but I don't know if it's worth the price. Each sandwich also comes with a pickle and cookie. The service for the sandwiches was pretty slow. Even though the line was short with only a few people, they seemed understaffed and only had one or two workers helping out with making the sandwiches. We were in line for almost 20 minutes, which is a pretty long time for a grab-and-go type of sandwich shop. The inside dining area has plenty of tables and seating, perfect for small or large groups. Overall, Schat's is a staple of Mammoth with great pastries and sandwiches, but unfortunately the downside is the increasing prices.

They had the best carrot cake I've ever had. The eclairs weren't the best and can be avoided. Overall, it was a bit pricey. We got four small slices for $40.

I had specifically asked to substitute the rice, but it was still served -- and there was a hair in it, which is absolutely unacceptable from a hygiene standpoint. The kids' burger was overcooked to the point of being dry like a cracker, and the fries looked and tasted like they were cooked in old, repeatedly used oil. This is unsafe and unacceptable, especially for children's food. The steak was ordered medium well, but was served well done -- completely overcooked. The chimichurri sauce was also misleading: instead of the classic green sauce, a red mixture was served that had nothing to do with it. The coleslaw was simply awful. Additionally, the staff showed no proper response -- we were not offered a replacement, a discount, or even a proper apology. This reflects a complete disregard for service standards and customer care. In its current state, this does not meet even basic restaurant standards.

We were really glad to find Stellar Brews. I ordered a chai latte and it honestly may be the best I've ever had in my life -- perfectly spiced, not too sweet, and just really comforting. The service from Carlos was great, too. He wasn't overbearing -- just genuinely kind, generous, and attentive in a low-key way that made the space feel welcoming. If you're deciding between the big coffee chains and this place, skip the chains and come here. We'll definitely be back.

We were on our way out of town around 9:30am and stopped to get coffee and grabbed an everything bagel with eggs and bacon as well as a turkey egg burrito from the grab and go section. The coffee was fine. The bagel was so hard and burnt that I could barely bite into it. I tried a couple of different spots and it was inedible. Whatever the egg puck was inside the bagel was hard and tasteless. The "bacon" was literally stuck to the bagel, I tried to peel it off and eat some but it didn't taste like bacon and was like leather. I'm having a hard time understanding why they would serve this? The burrito was just brought out from the kitchen. We bit into it and it was cold. The tortilla tasted fake. Again, why put this out there to purchase. Had we not been in a time crunch we would have turned around to show them what they gave us and request a refund. I've never thrown out food before but these were inedible. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 as the cashier was very friendly.

There was lemon water to drink which was nice. Not so positive: Everything we got was dry and honestly, not that good. The most moisture laden item was a raspberry crumble bar but it was surprisingly not very sweet and kinda off putting. The scone was dry, the shortbread was dry, the bottom of my daughter's cookie was burned. Like pretty black. Maybe it was supposed to be that way? My wife wanted an espresso but the lady behind the counter explained they only had drip coffee. Our daughter asked the same lady if there was a cupcake available, and she said "nope, what you see is what you get." Nothing wrong with what she answered but her tone seemed like she was really annoyed by the question. My wife just wanted to leave but felt like it would be rude to leave without buying things and we like to generally support local businesses. Side note: We ended up going to Schatts bakery a half mile away later that day and had a way better experience with far better tasting baked goods. We wish East side luck but we won't be back.
