Schatzi's has, for me, a good beer selection, my favorite German food and pretzel buns in the area, a cozy atmosphere, and a menu I'd like to continue to explore. I do wish they had more local brews (though they may at other times as the selection changes), and their prices are above average. That goes for the food too. $8 for a wurst is, well, let's just say I prefer them on a Monday when they're $6. Vegetarians may find it challenging to eat here, as I found relatively few things on the menu for them, such as the vegetarian reuben, though you can probably always ask them to hold the meat toppings on some of the other choices. Schatzi's has that Brooklyn back alley feel once you step inside and out to their back patio. I went with my friend on a whim since he told me it's the only place around that was sure to be open late that had good food. I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. I had wanted to try the kimchi tacos originally because it seemed odd that a German place would sell them but I ended up ordering something else since my friend didn't want to share it with me. I went with the Schnitzel which came with a cabbage sauce on top with potatoes and veggies underneath. It was simple yet filling. I usually try to order huge portions of food and save the rest later for tomorrow's lunch but everything was so good I couldn't wait. That rarely happens to me. I only wish I didn't move across country away from this area before finding out it existed. The inside seemed very loud but the outside was serene, with a little mini water fall and some stray cats darting around, playing with each other (never begging). The waiters were chill and kept an eye on us, always knowing when we needed them. We never had to wait forever or were pestered by them. I came here with a big party and really enjoyed the experience. They really handled us well and there was no issues to speak of. We started with wings, pretzels, and frickles. All of it was very good though the mustard for the pretzels was a bit unusual and not in a good way. Wings had a nice seasoning and were cooked very well. For mains we had roast chicken and spatzle which I enjoyed. The spatzle had qla nice nutmeg flavor and was my favorite. I have thoroughly enjoy Schatzi's since I moved to Poughkeepsie. The beer is always changing and is always a great selection. The mixed drinks are very good (I typically order a Manhattan). The food is very good, too. I wish they had the same amount of options for their Wednesday night special pieorgies every day. We went for brunch one Sunday and were the first people to arrive in the whole place. We sat, ordered our drinks, and ordered our food. We were waiting no more than 15 minutes and the waiter came up to us to apologize for the "long wait." We told him it was not a long wait at all and he then gave us complimentary Food Truck Tacos, which were amazing. I never thought to try them and I kicked myself for not doing so earlier! Things to definitely try: Onion Rings, Any (and all) of the Pierogies, Frickles, All of their Wursts, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Veggie Reuben, and the Mac n Cheese Things to avoid: Nothing. Go for it. This was our third time attempt at trying Schazti's. We came in one snowy evening during the middle of the day. Seating is very limited, and they don't take reservations. So forget about coming on a Friday or Saturday night without a hefty wait. We started off with the bavarian pretzels. They are all their cracked out to be: warm, delicious, and the cheese is really good. Don't come here without at least giving these a try. I went for the infamous Schatzi Burger. Buzzfeed listed it as "one burger that will change your life", but truth be told, even though it was visually a masterpiece, it was more underwhelming than anything. The bun is huge and takes away from the awesomeness of the meat. I would've been perfectly content gorging on the burger, crispy pork belly, melted cheddar and green onion pancake sans bun. She had gotten the knockwurst (pork and veal sausage) and shared a very similar lackluster experience. Though, the beer menu is on point. I couldn't decide between the Dunkel or Hefe-Weissbier. Ultimately went with the latter and it was perfect. I am excited to check back once it gets warmer. I hear the back door opens up to a beautiful patio and would love to relax there. But for us New Englanders, winter is forever. And with that said- the small bar, small dining area, and one bathroom definitely makes for an intimate setting. If you're expecting to come with a bunch of your buddies or even a date, time it accordingly because Schatzi's gets PACKED. Decent spot for pub food and good beer. Parking is limited to the lot across the street or whatever is available on Main Street. Keep in mind the parking meters are in effect from 8am-6pm, Monday through Saturday. I would like to give 2.5 stars here but apparently that's not possible. Just keep that in mind. As a summary, I will say that I think this place has the potential to be a 4-star place, but needs refinement to get there. This place replaced Karma Lounge, which as far as I could tell just served really expensive drinks, but I digress. My companion and I saw a friend "check in" here, and I have a hard time turning down good German bread, so we gave it a try. We walked in with the intention of sitting out on the back porch; when we entered the restaurant we weren't acknowledged at all and there wasn't a "seat yourself" or "please wait to be seated" sign, so it was unclear. We slunk through the bar portion of the place and sat outside on the porch, which is always very nice; I'm always looking for good outdoor seating in the area. In terms of atmosphere - as it's almost mid-September, it was getting dark rather early, but no one offered to turn on any lights (even though there are rows and rows of street and hanging lights) until it was almost pitch black. In addition, there was a group of rowdy football fans in the back playing 'throw the sack in the hole' or something - I have no problem with people having a good time but it was kind of out of place for what was supposed to be a relaxed outdoor setting. We were promptly served by a young waitress. She was very nice and asked us for drink orders, but didn't distribute any drink menus. When I mentioned this, she gave me a piece of notebook paper with the beer selections written on it. It was my understanding that Schatzi's was advertising itself as a "Beer Haus", and this struck me as very odd. Surely it must be pretty simple to print up a set of beer menus with accurate descriptions of the offerings? I am not a beer afficianado, so I wasn't familiar with the choices offered. When I asked the waitress which one would be closest to a nice crisp pilsner, her answer was "I'm only 20, so I'll have to ask". Again, I have no issue with an underage server, but surely even someone who is not 21 can be knowledgable about the drinks her establishment offers. To her credit, the beer she brought me was really excellent; my partner had a margarita which she disliked. In terms of the overall menu, when my partner called Schatzi's to ask if they served a dinner menu, the answer was yes, but the menu reads like lunch fare - mostly fries and sandwiches. This is fine, but I felt a little misled. We then proceeded to order appetizers; "adult" tater tots, herb garlic fries, and hot pretzel bread. They were out of the hot pretzel, which was VERY disappointing - a German-themed restaurant that runs out out pretzel bread? I understand that it was Sunday night, but still. The adult tater-tots were outstanding, and should be advertised as the signature dish for this place in my opinion. The fries were excellent, very tasty and came with an excellent dipping sauce, but I've had similar elsewhere. For the main course, I had the burger with cheddar cheese on a pretzel bun, and my partner had the duck confit grilled cheese. I'll come right out and say that my partner very much disliked her dish, thinking back on it, a duck grilled cheese sandwich sounds like something that just should not be put together. Maybe this is a German dish I'm not aware of, not sure. My burger was prepared properly, and the pretzel bread was very good, but the bun itself was VERY greasy, and while I don't mind greasy food, it made the burger itself very difficult to eat - I eventually ended up eating the burger with a knife and fork and the bun separately. The bun was very tasty as mentioned, but again there's no reason for it to be so greasy. To the restaurant's credit, when my partner mentioned her dissatisfaction with her dish the manager/owner came out to offer to remove it from the bill; we declined this and paid the whole bill, since it wasn't like the dish was prepared poorly; we have no problem with paying for our food which we ordered. We definitely appreciated this gesture however, and I thank them for it. I only know of one other German restuarant in the area, Gunk Haus off of route 299 near New Paltz, and to be honest Gunk Haus's food crushes Schatzi's. As I metioned to start, Schatzi's is new, so I'm willing to cut them some slack and return for a lunch, but they really need to work on their menu refinement (and actually having all menus), server knowledge, and front door presence. read more

Been to Schatzi's a couple times. We find excuses to go up to the POK so we can go here. I like Mill House and like to go there, but Schatzi's has the German food I need. There are a good selection of beers on tap - German as well as local beers. Small seating area in the back (though I understand they have a patio out back when it's warm). We've been there when it is crazy busy, and when it is just normally busy. Never had to wait too long though there's not a lot of room to stand out of the way. The wait staff and bartenders have given us good service when we've been there, no complaints. The food is a new world take on some German favorites. Pretzels are awesome - including the beer cheese, fried pickles (frickles) with the horseradish sauce, the Schatzi burger is really pretty good - love the pork belly and potato pancake on that. This is a review of a simply horrendous experience my wife and I had at Schatzi's in Poughkeepsie. This is not a review of the food which was actually very good nor is it pertaining to the service which was mediocre at best. It is about the person who claims to be the manager and his total lack of customer appreciation, respect for people, and his general lousy attitude. This all took place this past Saturday night when a group of people from my wife work got together there were 14 or 16 people in total. We all had a couple drink and food. To be exact I had 2 Beers from Woodstock Brewing @8 My wife had 2 Rieslings @9 we had pickle chips @9 I had the Duck BLT @14 my wife had a Rueben @15 you will see why I listed the amounts shortly. All the food Apps and Meals arrived at the same time (for the whole table, not just ours) hence mediocre service. The food itself was very good and I was thinking wow we found another place to eat...WRONG We finished eating at about 8 pm we had to be someplace by 8:30 I started looking for our server to get our check about 8:10 I was finally able to flag her down, us and another couple asked for our checks which when she brought them over I handed her my credit card immediately because I had to leave. Our bill was $81.98 which seemed a little high for what we had but we were in a hurry, so I added on a $20 tip making my total $101.98 handed to our server and we left. This is where the fun begins, the next day my wife goes to work and here's how the manager was berating everyone that was still there because he wanted my phone number because there was a problem with my check, and oh by the way they tacked on 20% gratuity because of the size of our party. He went so far as to keep after one of my wife's friends that she finally said she would call us which she did from the restaurant's phone. Even after she tried calling us he kept asking for our phone numbers. So, after hearing this I call Schatzi's ask for the owner he is not in, asked when can I reach him they have no idea. So, I go to their website hoping for a contact us page, nothing. So, I private message them on Facebook. Within about 10 min I get a phone call from the manager at the New Paltz location, couldn't be nicer very apologetic said the owner will call me by Wednesday (Today is Wednesday no phone call). Not 5 minutes later I get another phone call and I explain who I am and he firsts said I shorted them $44 I ask him how that can be? He really had no answer other than to say someone did, so I explain to him that our food and drink total was $72, and you added on a gratuity, you gave me a bill for $81.98 and I added another $20. His response was well we normally don't split checks on large tables, I said well then you should have either told us up front or you need to hire more competent employees! I said my bill may have been short by about $5.00 by my calculation (since they added a gratuity) but I did leave a tip on top of the gratuity you tacked on so in my mind you owe me $15 his response "YOU CAN COME HERE RIGHT NOW AND I'LL GIVE IT TO YOU IN CASH" To which I said I am not that petty. Asked him why he was harassing our friends he said I wasn't, to which I replied you kept after one until she finally used your house phone to call us! That's not harassment?? I have no issues with a restaurant adding a gratuity for large tables I do have a problem with your employees accusing me of walking out without paying, which I have not nor, would I ever even consider doing that! I also always tip my servers! Well this "Gentleman" called me from his cell phone and I do have his name and I was able to look him up on Facebook to his credit he lists his former places of employment, both places have gone out of business, if he keeps treating people at Schatzi's this way he will be able to add a third defunct business to his resume! My advice if you go double check your bill or maybe triple check it and by all means keep your receipt, Will I go back to Poughkeepsie no way, I might try New Paltz at least the Manager there know how to talk to customers. And just to be clear customers are the ones who pay your salary!! read more

You literally cannot go wrong in this place. Everything is amazing. Their burger lives up to the hype, but beyond that, their entire German-inspired menu is worth exploring in its entirety. My latest order included two different kinds of sausage- smoked and spicy cheddar. Both came on pretzel rolls (as with most things here) and I couldn't decide which one I loved more. Pair anything with an AMAZING craft beer list that's always rotating. Everything from German Kolsch to hopped-up American IPA, and everything in between. Their beer menu also includes detailed explanations of everything they're offering, so you're not just expected to pick a name off a list. If there's a complaint to be had, it's that the space can get a little cramped, especially during bar hours. But in the warm months they open their back patio which, considering their middle-of-Poughkeepsie location, is a blissful atmosphere. I live across the river and don't get here as much as I would like to. If I lived in Poughkeepsie, this would be a weekly destination, without a doubt. read more

I think I was too excited for this place, and therefor was disappointed. Mainly because of the costumer service. It is a pub after all and I guess if you're a regular you know to have a seat wherever when you come in. And that all orders after a certain time must be made at the bar because you won't have someone asking you what you're having. Oh, and make sure you ask for a menu because you'll likely not get one either unless you ask. I can't remember which beer my boyfriend ordered for us but the taste was too strong for my liking and made me gag each time I tried it. I literally left an almost full glad of beer on the table when we left. But I am not going to give or take away stars for the beer I've had because I am not a huge fan of beer anyway so I would be wrong to judge them on something I don't have a tasting for. What I am going to give a couple stars for, is for the Rueben sliders. I was pretty amazed at how much flavor was in those sandwiches. I came here with hubby a few nights ago- Sunday to be exact- and we opted to sit at the bar and just share a variety of apps and some good craft beer. Schatzi's does have a full page beer menu- front and back- of the current selections on tap, something that another revewer commented of which was lacking during their visit last month. You can also purchase an exclusive Schatzi's mug, personalized to you, and keep it stored on the premises for your return visits. Purchasing your own mug entitles you to on-going beer special discounts. Our bartender, Dave, was very amiable and attentive and a pleasure to chat with. The extensive variety of ever-changing craft beer on tap is impressive and there is definitely something for everybody! The appetizers that we shared - "Grown-up Tator Tots", "Brussels", and "Soft Pretzels sticks w/ beer cheese sauce" were all outstanding! We both REALLY enjoyed all of the dishes and the different beers we tired. The brussels were a little greasy, but otherwise fantastic in flavor! Who knew brussel sprouts could be THIS GOOD? Dave, the bartender, was always quick to give us samples about which ever beer we asked about. Unfortunately, two dudes (donning CIA attire) came in toward the end of our stay and sat down rather close to us at the bar (even though the entire bar was practially empty) and one of them thought it was appropriate to continually drop the "F - bomb" amongst other foul language without giving any thought to the fact that the other patrons may not want to hear the garbage spewing from his ignorant lips. My husband was getting ready to tell this creep to watch his mouth in front of a lady, but I asked him to just drop it as a jerk like that might think nothing of trying to quickly turn the matter into a fist fight! Geez, I only came here for a couple of great beers, some nice apps and a good time w/my man! The owner really should say something to an offensive patron like that. I believe that he, the owner, was sitting right there at the end of the bar next to the offensive one. No S@#t...that was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had and I had Cricket burger in Denver, Hodad's in San Diego and an Office Burger in LA. Side bar..Rocky's is better than Hodad's if you're in San Diego. This massive, juicy piece of meat is up there with the big boys. In fact, the pork belly was the cherry on top (get it...on top). Beer selection is on point. It actually felt like I was back in a West Coast bar with the beer selection. Kids are home for thanksgiving. They love German food so we decided to give Schatzi's. The pretzel and Pierogi appetizers were really good. We ordered the brat, knockwurst, fried grilled cheese and the schnitzel. The brat was absolutely delicious, the sauerkraut made it! The table opinion was the fried grilled cheese was just ok, way to bready, not enough cheese. The potatoes and Brussels sprouts on the Schnitzel were great but the schnitzel was just ok and a little dry. The knockwurst was good. A group of five of us came for the first time tonight, bar top. We were reluctant after hearing about the Milos Cantina story, where a patron was manhandled by a security guard with an expired license. But, we gave it a shot. We had several drinks amongst the five of us, along with two appetizers. After leaving our payment plus the appropriate tip, our bartender approached us with the receipt, card, and cash tip to ask, "Was this the full tip. We weren't sure!" As someone who has worked in the food industry for years, I both know what An appropriate tip looks like, and can also tell you I would NEVER ask a customer such an inappropriate question. We tried a variety of share plates. We got the tacos, pierogi and Parmesan fries. They all left us dying for more. And this is where the two star rating comes in. The service was absolutely horrendous. We had a blond waitress that right from the get-go seemed like she was not the least bit interested in serving us. I asked her to recommend a beer that went with my food, and she made a face at me and told me that all of them do. Ok. Once the food was brought out, it was obvious that it was not going to be enough for us. We wanted to order some more, and get some more beer. Except that the waitress never came back to refill our drinks or ask us how things were going. We waited for over 30 minutes and she never came back to even offer us the check. I had to go and ask somebody else for it. If she had come back and asked, we would've easily added another $30 to the check. This place is disgusting. I've been here twice now and both times were absolutely horrible. First time dining in the service was extremely poor and when the fried chicken sandwich finally came it was hard, cold, and flavorless. Schatzis always has a great rotating tap list featuring all types of beer, as well as great specialty cocktails. The space is perfect if you're just looking for a beer at the bar, or if you're looking for a sit-down meal in the dining room or outside on their patio. Pirogie night is awesome! Wednsdays, $1.50 pirogies with varying flavors, recommend asking for a side of hour sauce and putting some on top of the pirogie with sour cream. Also tried the pretzels for the first time, they were very good. They were doughy with a little bit of salt and an outstanding cheese dipping sauce. Some of the best gastropub food in the area. Highly recommend to anyone. read more
