We decided to do a complete landscaping overhaul, front and back.  Our yard had grass when we bought the house and the sprinkler system was failing.  We had been making bandaid fixes until we had enough saved up and then also could no longer make the fixes without a much larger sprinkler system fix.  It was time. We called a few companies for quotes and selected Schilling Horticulture.  Norm came out and talked with us and got an idea what we were looking for and what our goal was.  We then met with our designer, Laura, and she got a more detailed idea of what we were looking for.  She and Carlos came out and measured our yard and we were then presented with a beautiful design plan and binder.  Laura took the time to go over the design with us, the plants and trees that she selected, the materials that were going to be used; everything was put nicely into a binder with plant information sheets and scaled design plan.  We made a few minor changes and the plan was finalized. When it was time for work to begin, Carlos and his crew arrived and immediately got to work on demolition.  We consistently had the same two crewmembers, Ever and Jose, along with more guys on site as more work was needed.  Ever and Jose worked so hard!  They were on site every morning, and at the end of each day cleaned up the work site and made sure everything was put away, both in our yard and on the street where the materials were delivered and dumpster was placed.  The care and details they took through each step of the process was impeccable. They made sure the site was clean at the end of each day.  When the plants arrived, they took care to place the plants according to plan and then to be careful walking around once the plants were in the ground. I had saved one plant from the original yard and wanted it replanted next to our chaste tree.  I spoke with Ever about this and he made sure it was taken care of and that a drip line was added so this rescue plant would get water.  A funny story, on a site visit, I was talking with Laura and explaining this at the same time that Ever was explaining it to Carlos.  I appreciate the care that was taken for this small request. Every day we could see the progress made.  And throughout the month, the work came together.  We were extremely impressed with how quickly everything happened once work started.  For our complete overhaul, they were finished in three weeks!   The process was lengthy (it was little over a year from our first discussion to the time work started - they are a busy company!) Laura made sure we understood this at the start, and was communicative throughout the process and the wait.  The finished yard/landscaping was well worth the wait and we are so happy with our new yard and landscaping! At the final walk-through we were given instructions for maintenance, how to work the new irrigation timer and lighting controls.  And will have another site visit in six months to make sure all the plants and trees have taken well and are thriving. We could not be happier with the completed work and know that we made the right choice with Schilling Horticulture!  Norm and Laura were wonderful to work with; Carlos and Laura were always available for any questions. We are about to convert our grass front yard to a drought tolerant landscape. We found Norms website and were struck by the photos of his landscapes and wonderful resources. My partner Erik and I were struggling with where to start as far as removing the grass and managing all the rouge palm tree babies and ivy growing all over our half acre lot. I called Norm to see if he could help guide us. He could not have been nicer on the phone. Spent time with me sharing his very impressive background and his extensive knowledge about plants. We hired Norm to come give us advice about how to approach our landscaping project. Boy was that money well spent! We had Norm out today for a consult for a possible turf conversion. It wasn't a free consult, but it was well worth the cost for all the advice he gave me. In the end I may not convert (because I have a few trees that may not be able to tolerate it), but I'm still considering options with my yard. If you are looking for someone who will not rush through this initial phase; who obviously loves their work; and who is incredibly knowledgable, then Schilling Horticulture would be my first pick. I've worked with Schilling for a few years. I have a mulberry that's aging but it's gorgeous since I've been working with Schilling. They trimmed the dead branches, did some shaping, and added fertilizer twice a year and now it's one of the trees that is a pride of the neighborhood. They are who I trust now to take care of my trees to trim or prune and honor their age and beauty. Today I called about a sprinkler leak. Roger came within the hour and had it fixed within half an hour of being here. There was a diaphragm on the sprinkler valve that was leaking. He verified that was the culprit and replaced that part lickety split. While he was here, he showed me how to turn the sprinkler water valves on and off, and how to read my water meter to make sure I don't have any leaks. Pretty great with all of the education and having it all done in under a couple of hours from when I called. read more

I initially hired Schilling Horticulture Group to remove two Mimosa trees that had become infested with borers. Norm Schilling is a certified arborist and he provided very cogent advice about what to do. As a result, we have hired them to do an overhaul of our front landscaping. They completed it in roughly two weeks and the results have been spectacular. They are not cheap; if you are looking to add a few trees, flowers and shrubs to your yard at a low price, this is not the company for you. When we told Mr. Schilling that we were interested in re-doing our front yard, he set up an appointment with Laura, their designer. Laura is a fountain of information about plant life and how it will work in the desert. She came to our home initially and spoke to my wife and I about what we wanted. The talk was in great detail and by this conversation, she got a feel for what we were looking for. We replaced what had been a semi-desert landscape with a full desert landscape. We removed all grass that was there and all non-desert plants and shrubs. Laura laid out a design that was brilliantly conceived. On the plan, she included a color-coded guide to all the plant material that detailed what went where. She also provided us a binder filled with information on every thing she planted. This cost $1,500, which was applied to the cost of the project if we accepted but was non-refundable if we did not. So you really have to be serious to take that step, but it was well worth it. We did and the team came out and was extremely professional. They brought their own Porta Potty, which stayed on site the entire time, so they weren't disturbing us looking to use the bathroom. They also had a dumpster on site the entire time and changed it as it filled. The foreman, Carlos, was very communicative with me and easy to work with. We made a few, very slight changes, to the design. In one, we had a California Pepper tree that was scheduled to be removed. Our previous landscaper basically ruined it by topping it (Never top your trees, I have learned!) and it was supposed to be replaced by a Red Push Pistache. But as we were into the job, my wife didn't want to kill the tree, so we left it and put the Pistache in another spot on the landscape. The team was professional at doing their best to make the California Pepper presentable. They fixed what they could that the other landscaper had messed up, and we'll see what happens with it as we move forward. It is, though, 100 percent better. We made a few other changes -- we had a couple of baskets of flowers we'd bought at Home Depot a few months ago, and wanted those added into the design. They not only did it without complaint and very professionally, but they ran irrigation into the pot so we no longer have to hand water them. The work took two weeks, about eight working days overall, and it came out incredible. On the final walk through, Laura and Carlos went over in great detail what had been planted, what I needed to do to maintain it and handed me a multi-page typed document with information and instructions. There is no question that they are a premium priced company; we have subsequently hired them to do weekly maintenance, and that cost is almost four times what our prior landscaper charged. But they do far more work, and they've so far done it extraordinarily well. Hiring Schilling is like buying a Mercedes or a BMW instead of a Chevy or a Ford, but in my opinion, their knowledge, quality work and attention to detail make it well worth it. read more

When I purchased my home I had very mature landscaping. There was a 150 feet row of Oleander which were thin and new growth was very limited. I was considering replacing them. Norm came to my home and suggested 2 annual fertilizations per year and assured me the oleanders would flourish, and they have! The plants are now full and amazing growth has filled in all gaps. I first used Schilling for a tree replacement and monthly maintenance at my old house. When I moved, the tiny back yard in my new house was just dirt and a sad tree so I contacted Schilling for a new design. Sandra and the main landscaper (completely blanking on his name) came out and we worked out a design for what I wanted. Once I got my approvals from the HOA it all went in quickly. There were a couple of small items that needed fixing but they were addressed promptly. A few months ago the tree that was planted started looking not so hot and one of my plants had died. The plant was quickly replaced with a different type after I called and Sandra tried a few things with the tree and it's coming back nicely. I haven't had need yet of monthly maintenance since the yard is so small and not many weeds find purchase, but I may start again as my garden grows. read more

They did our front landscape 8 years ago. Some of the plants they put in are awful. They didn't space the irrigation with plant growth in mind and many of the plants grew over the sprinkler heads. It should have better for the price we paid. read more

We used them for a complete landscape design. They were expensive but we heard that they did a good job. Their installation was terrrible. Plants were installed incorrectly and not according to plan. We were given a 6 month warranty on the plants. Because of both the installation and the selection of plants not appropriate for the local winter temperature, about 30% of the plants died between 5 and 8 months from the date of installation. They only replaced some of the plants, said that they lost money on the job and would not replace the balance of the plants. They said the death of the plants were an act of god-the weather. Do not use them. They do not stand by their work. It is now two years since their design and installation. Their designer has left their employ. Approximately 40% of the installed plants have died and several cactus have fallen over because of improper installation. I have called them for assistance but they do not return telephone calls. They do not measure up to their reputation. read more
