I had the Ruben and it was wonderful. The sauerkraut really made it for me. I had an "adult" root beer float and let me tell you! It's usually made with vanilla ice cream but you should ask if they have cinnamon ice cream because that was the best float I've ever had. The cherry on top was the service from Bello at the bar. He was very accommodating and even gave me recommendations to check out around the city! The only reason I gave a 4 star was because the fried were cold. This was my first time at Schilos. It was wonderful. The food was delicious and reminded me of the food my grandma used to make. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. The atmosphere was up beat and we were seated in under the quoted time. I would have given the place 5 stars, however, the restrooms were a little off putting. In a world of political correctness, why would a fantastic restaurant want to go there? The women's room said it was a "unisex" bathroom but the men's did not. Really people? If you're going to do that make BOTH bathrooms unisex and don't single out women. read more

This was recommended by our Lyft driver. The food was so/so. The bacon came out cold, and the chorizo in the tacos had a weird after taste. The drinks were good, service was also so/so. They take your order on an iPad device right at the table. All of our food didn't come out, no big deal and our waitress didn't notice either. But of course it was on the bill when it came out, which makes me wonder how they missed bringing the food since it was rang into the back. Oldest restaurant in SA. Food, Service, and Price are all very good. It's a must visit for breakfast if your in the area. Only caveat is expect a wait during weekends and holidays if you go at prime times. We waited up to 30 minutes two of the three days we ate there. But worth the wait, just plan your day accordingly. They were really gracious to let us order right at the last minute, we really had no idea that they closed at 2:30 in the afternoon. We were there for a convention and on a break for lunch. We got served and it was delicious. Then we left quickly thereafter, leaving behind our convention bag. So we had to come back the next day to pick it up. I'm glad they keep lost and found for a while. I'd come back because the service. But they also had a really good menu, the ladies at the convention hall recommended the restaurant. Came for a brunch and stayed for the 15 minute wait. Glad that we did because it was an awesome experience! Check out some of the pictures of the interior! The oldest restaurant in San Antonio apparently. We started with potato pancakes which accidentally came out as a pretzel which also looked amazing so we'll have to try that when we go back. Although, we were happy that the potato pancakes were delicious! Then I tried a platter with a little bit of everything which was good. Finally finished with a mug of root beer which was honestly the best I've ever drank. Also, finished with an Apple strudel since they were out of apple turnovers. Overall the service and food was outstanding! We tried to buy some merchandise but apparently they're so popular they were sold out. So for this review I gotta say, I didn't really look this place up. I was just walking from the Mall back to my hotel room and I passed by this restaurant and then I turned back, I noticed the German flag and the look of an old Saloon. As soon as I walked in I was greeted and welcomed. Nice to feel welcomed and to see that manners and courtesies are still alive and well in this restaurant. First impressions count! I did however fail to take pictures of the inside, I like the saloon type of environment. Amanda was my server, she's amazing and her recommendations are truly the best. I immediately trusted her! Now onto the food. I've only had German food two other times so I'm still not too too familiar with it. I saw the Schnitzel, she asked if I eat pork, I said no, not really. So she recommended the Weinerschnitzel which is veal. She also made a recommendation for the two sides that came with it and she had me try one of them to see if I liked it before I ordered it, (where did this lady come from???!!!) So if I added this mushroom gravy, the Weinerschnitzel turned into a Jagerschnitzel. Whatever that meant, I liked it when it got to my table. It was an epic moment for my palate . Oldest restaurant in San Antonio and it's situated right off the Riverwalk. Be prepared to wait as this place gets packed fast on a weekend. The deli sandwiches are massive but we found it rather dry. The Reuben was fair but nothing to write home about. It's been almost 10 years since we last visited San Antonio (ugh, I feel old writing that..), and we were SO excited to bring our kids to Schilos on their first trip to the city! First of all - the good stuff. Walking distance from the Alamo so that was a plus considering our car was parked far away at a motel. Their house root beer is still amazing and I'd probably come here again just for that! Mosaic tile floors, antique booths and a wooden bar at the back of the room. It's busy at lunch, bustling with serversyand diners. I ordered a reuben. The bread is a delicious dark brown pumpernickel. The slices of corned beef are topped with sauerkraut and melted cheese. The sandwich is disappointing. The corned beef is bland, machine sliced lunch meat - not NY style (flaky, thick sliced and flavorful) - and kinda skimpy on the meat. The execution of the sandwich is good, but the ingredients are unimpressive. The house made root beer is served in a frosty mug and is delicious, and comes with a free refill. I'll try again and order something else on the menu. It's a fun and historic place and worthy of a another shot. read more

Super fast service, organized host told us where to wait for a table, and overall great experience. Once we got a table our server, Antonio, got our order quickly and the food came out even faster. Tried the famous root-beer, a classic Ruben, and a side of the warm German potato salad. The root beer was served in a thick glass mug, nicely chilled, without any ice. Being a southerner I usually prefer lots of ice, but the really cold temperature of the root-beer without ice was perfect. Root-beer comes with one refill. The Ruben was very neatly stacked and the cheese was so melty and good! Very hearty sandwich. The German potato salad was interesting, lightly salty, some vinegar tart, and nicely warmed. It was very good, not my favorite side dish, but it was good. Wish I had saved room for dessert, the cheesecake looked ridiculously good, but I was too full. The deli counter in the way out was stocked with deviled eggs, and all sorts of good looking dessert. Next time I'll order dessert first. read more

It seemed promising. Long wait time to be seated - oldest restaurant in downtown San Antonio - and a menu boasting authentic German food. I had high hopes. In reality, it was dark and dingy - with taxidermy adorned walls. Once seated, we waited a long time for service. But we had a photographer ask if they could take a free picture of us. So we obliged. We did indeed get a free printed photograph along with 4 additional framed photographs ... for a fee. Really? We kindly declined. After several minutes, our kind but slow and inattentive server came to take our drink orders .... AND we told her we were ready to order our appetizer and lunches. Drinks came fairly quickly (that's all relative). Their root beer was good but there's much better out there. Don't be fooled by the promotion of the best out there. Within 30 mins our three, small portioned lunch orders came out. At that point we asked where our appetizer was (thanks?!?!). I should have cancelled it on the spot. (But the lunches were small). Sadly, even the appetizer was underwhelming and far from cheap. Alas, we had to ask for some missing sides from our meals and drink refills. The authentic German food is far from authentic; the food is mediocre at best. Turns out, the photos were the best part of our experience. The choice is yours - but we'll never be back. read more

Dirty, unwashed, coffee cups & glasses, terrible service, and horrific standards of cleanliness. I went in the bathroom after the server came out and there were no TP nor soap. I saw the same server put his finger in the plastic salsa cups before ladling salsa into them. He should have just separated them by the rim without putting his finger in them. Our food too 25 minutes after we ordered and it was missing gravy as well as the sausage patties. That took another 10 minutes to come after asking our server, Josue, about them. He didn't come back to check on us much. Their GM has to give us coffee and water refills as well as get us the gravy and sausage patties. I just hope their kitchen staff has higher standards. I have been wanting to try Schilo's for years and it was a disappointing experience and I won't be returning. For starters, the server was forgetful and rarely present at the table. The Rueben Fritters were delicious but how are you supposed to share this appetizer with no plates? Tea refills were nonexistent much like our server. My friend offered no comment on his schnitzel; however, my veal schnitzel was difficult to cut with a serrated knife and while I tried to eat this alleged veal, I could not eat more than a few bites. I find it hard to believe that it was veal to begin with; if it was veal then this restaurant has bigger problems. The sides had a greasy day-old taste. The tea was delicious, but it is easier to get ketchup at Mcdonald's then it was to get a refill from our server. Lastly, the price of the food listed on the menu is different from what was listed on the receipt I received electronically. Does this constitute some form of theft? In other words, I was overcharged. Poor service, poor food quality, and overcharging are why I would never return to this establishment.
