This is our go to spot when we visit. The food is exceptional and reasonably priced. The wait staff is attentive and down to earth. This restaurant is very humbling has a "mom and pop" atmosphere. I got the avocado toast with an over medium egg and bloody mary. It was everything I had hoped for. My sisters got the french toast, breakfast tacos, and coffee. They didnt complain a bit. I had eaten at Schilos before and was underwhelmed the first time I went! There is something about being educated on a locations history that makes you appreciate your visit so much more. That and the incredible Chili dogs I'm about to tell you about. I walk in and you just see history! I was told by the manager that Schilos is the oldest continually operating restaurant in San Antonio. I ordered two of the Foot Long "Casa" Chili Cheese Hot Dogs with a side of fries and their famous root beer. The hot dogs were F'n incredible! The chili that comes on them was more of like a "Guisada" meat chili so it was different than your normal chili you see on hot dogs. However, that added to the delicious flavor of the food. The cold homemade root beer was so flavorful and I must have gone through at least four glasses of it. I highly recommend if you're in the downtown area to pay this San Antonio legend a visit! Schilos is an SATX institution, and worth a visit. Our server Joseph was very attentive and welcoming and made us aware of meal options and specialties we might not have been able to find from the large menu. We just had a couple of small lunches: two half sandwiches (chicken salad on sourdough and pastrami on rye) with German potato salad, and I also had their pea soup. The sandwiches were not elaborate or huge so we were happy with them. The pea soup was a lot like what I grew up with (I liked my mom's German potato salad more but Schilto's was ok). Their 'famous' root beer was great and the coffee was very good. Our fresh fruit tart dessert was a perfect little bite. It's a tidy place with great staff. Been to Schilos several times when visiting the River Walk area. Try to make it for lunch on each trip. This time I took several that had never been there. Ruebens and pea soup for several. They enjoyed it, as I have in the past. Another tried the chicken salad croissant and said it was good. I just smiled as I tried the chicken and dumplings for the first time. We also shared the fried Reuben balls. All good! Too bad they were out of root beer! They have been there a long time and the food shows why. Basic sandwiches. I was very disappointed I heard such rave reviews of this place. The buser also threw away a large manilla envelope with a certificate inside. It was my fault for leaving it on the table, but it was obviously something that was not trash. I returned right away when I realized I had left it. The server I worked with attempted to retrieve it, but it didn't seem like she really tried. It wasn't until the hostesses spoke up and agreed I did, in fact, have an envelope. I consider this to be one of the better priced restaurants, much more affordable, and conveniently located near the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. I have never had German food before, so I was very excited for the experience. The service was all right, the food was very delicious. I got the chicken schnitzel sandwich, chili beef hotdog, and chicken with biscuits and gravy. We also tried the pea soup that they were famous for, not gonna lie, it sort of tasted like baby food. So disappointing. Service was absolutely horrible and the food was like horrible diner food with poor presentation. The chicken and biscuit was so dry. The mushroom gravy was scary looking -- didn't even touch it. The fries that came with the kids meal were so cold. The French toast looked like they took some cheap thin bread and cooked it in egg and just threw it on the plate. The scrambled eggs looked like a long blob of cooked eggs. I don't know how our hotel recommended this place and wished I had just braved the line at Panaderia or gone to my hotel for breakfast. Sorry I hate talking negatively especially for a small business that's so popular but i felt like I just had to share since none of us were happy. They say this is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. I came here for my first and last meal while on a work trip. I had the papa for brunch on my first day - good helping of food at a really great price. The root beer is really good and I don't like soda or root beer. My friend said he is a root beer person and this place's RB was the best he's EVER had. GIVE IT A TRY!!! My last meal was a lunch with a few new friends and I just had the burger - I think I was craving a good burger. It was a normal burger, nothing out of this world but it did the job, maybe next time I will pick something more German though. Schilo's Delicatessen was fantastic. It had the feel of aged perfection; you could tell it has been there for a long time, but it's stayed awesome. We were able to get a table immediately and sat down to enjoy our breakfast. The server was friendly and ready to help. He was also patient when I remembered that Schilo's was known for their root beer. I asked if the 3 of us could split a root beer and he kindly brought us each a frosted mug. The root beer was incredible! It was perfectly sweet, sudsy, and cold. The frosted mugs added a little layer of frozen slush after a few minutes - perfection. For my breakfast, I ordered the Papa Fritz Breakfast with scrambled eggs, grits, and their homemade bratwurst. The waiter recommended their house-made spicy mustard for the bratwurst. It was awesomely horseradish-forward and some of the best mustard I've had. Reminded my of the Dusseldorf-style mustard my parents used to get in a little tiny glass mug. Memories! The ambiance, the food, the staff service, were all amazing. I get why this is the oldest restaurant in San Antonio and why they are still busy and knocking it out of the park. Schilo's is iconic. You know that, I know that. It's the oldest restaurant in San Antonio! It's a really cool, old school German deli serving hearty sandwiches, soup, and homemade root beer. We tried a cup of gumbo, chicken and dumplings, and split their classic Reuben sandwich. Dang it was good. You have to get a sandwich here! It was insane. The inside was such a cozy, welcoming, lively place. I regret not trying the root beer because everyone raves about it! If you go, order that for me. Their breakfast menu looked dopeeee. I definitely want to return for brunch one day! It looks like it would smack. This is a place you can order a coffee or a beer. There will likely be a line and/or wait, but they turn tables pretty quick! Either way, it's worth the wait. We had great service. It was walking distance for me, but if you drive, you'll likely have to park in public parking garage across the street. (I don't think there's designated restaurant parking, but I'm not sure.)
