I rented a gas SUV since I was not sure if there would be enough charging stations on the long drive to Mendocino from the Bay. Turns out the opposite is true. Lot of charging stations everywhere and not enough gas stations. This is the only spot in the village. 2 pumps and 1 did not work. It was also grimy and rusty and ... $10 for 1 gallon of 85! Got a flat Jan 2. All tire places in Ft Bragg were closed. I was on my way out of town to NV too! So then decided to call Schlafers. Lo & behold our little gem of a shop once again did me well. Fixed the flat right away. Don't disregard our small town gas station & auto repair. read more

Just before the 4th of July weekend I was camping in Mendocino, parked at the market and my car totally died and would not start and had a locked steering wheel. I called AAA who sent someone out from fort Bragg but his knowledge was limited to trying to jump start the battery. I thanked him but asked around and was directed to Schlafer's which is right in town. I spoke to Judy, and she sent Ricky Santos who was there within 2 minutes, tried several ways of getting the car started and we agreed that it was a bad starter and it needed to go to the shop. He was able to unlock the wheel. We pushed the car out into the parking lot. He pushed it to the end of the parking lot while I drove it, and I cruised down the hill to the shop. That was maybe 1:00. At 4:00 p.m. I got a call from Mike in the shop saying the car was ready. I had already asked around to my husband, and some shops here in Los Osos where I live, and they said the total bill including parts and labor should be around $600 to 675. I picked my car up and paid $665. The car has run perfectly since. I feel that they made a real effort to be helpful and to move quickly on behalf of two old ladies camping in a van out of town. It was a very smooth experience, and they were all so helpful and went out of their way. read more

These people price gouge so be aware and stay away!! with no visible price tags once you pump the gas you get hit with a $10 a gallon charge. Absolutely ridiculous. Never going near that place. I would give them a zero star review, but unfortunately that's not an option. read more

I have used them for a classic car and a full EV commercial class 5 vehicle. They are outstanding and my experiences have been excellent.

Oil change, tire rotation, warning light check [he said I'd have to take it to the dealer] = $413. The good news in and out in 1 hour.

At nearly $10 a gallon, thank god I had enough fuel to pull into Fort Bragg and pay half. This is literal price gouging, since Fort Bragg is just a few miles up the road. The owner must laugh all the way to the bank, but Karma may catch up to them. read more

I had a great experience here will I was visiting Mendocino. My car started giving me a warning that something was wrong with the battery charging system, and I was scared to drive it any further distance. So I went here because it was the closest shop in the area. Joseph was so kind and personable and even opened the hood to show me that there was just a pulley coming off, and not the alternator like I assumed. That was really nice to actually see, because as a female that knows nothing about cars and was in the area alone, I was a bit worried that someone would take advantage of that and overcharge me. This was also on NYE, and they stayed late that day and told me if they couldn't figure it out that day, they would come back and open on New Years to make sure that my car was done before I had to leave town. They ended up fixing the issue quickly and the price was very fair. So overall I was super happy that this situation in the middle of my vacation turned out like this. You've got to be kidding me! $10 a gallon for mid-grade! My fault for getting distracted. First the card reader didn't work. When i pulled my card and started to leave the pump, the guy inside said "Just go ahead and pump." He said Chevron wouldn't send someone to fix it because the "are too far away". The when i saw the meter pushing higher, I tried to see the price per gallon on the pump but the glass covering was to smokey [greased, perhaps] to read. Sounds shady all around, too bad for a quaint little town. Searching the internet, it seems to have been going on for a long time. Chevron should be looking into this. Their gas costs $9.60 per gallon and is not obviously labeled anywhere. The card reader is also confusing and broken, which is a further distraction from the prices. We were 5 gallons in before we noticed- just googled and found a bunch of articles about how this little dump sells the most expensive gas in the nation. This place was a life-saver! My gf and I were on a little trip in the area for the weekend and my car practically broke down on Sunday, the day we were supposed to go home. Hours away from home, we were in a pinch given this place, and every other autoshop nearby were, of course, closed. By pure luck, we ran into Judi and Ricky on their way out fo the building and they were nice enough to take a look at my car! They were able to quickly identify the issue (clogged transmission filter) and order the necessary parts for replacement the next day. The next day (Monday), parts came in and they got my car up and running again! We made it home safely with no issues! Huge shout-out to Schlafers Auto Repair. This place has good, kind people who were willing to help on their day off, and definitely saved us from having to stay another night. They also kept us updated the whole time, letting us know exactly what they were doing to my car, the logic behind every decision, and other suggestions and observations. Everyone was very knowledgeable about cars and we definitely learned a lot about them too! Joe was our hero! We were in Mendocino on vacation when our truck started having engine trouble. We were able to get it to his shop. When it wasn't able to be repaired by the end of that day, Joe gave us a ride back to our rented cottage. Then picked us up the following morning when we checked out. There were some complications and we had to leave to get back home to Nevada so he took us to Fort Bragg where we rented a car to drive home. Joe was able to diagnose the issue that week and repair the truck. When we drove back the next weekend he had not only repaired the truck but also washed it inside and out for us. It's running great now. He truly went out of his way to help us out. And his prices were very reasonable. I highly recommend this shop!!! read more

Most expensive gas in the country A Mendocino County gas station that made headlines last summer is at again: Schlafer's most likely has the highest pump price in the United States. The news site MendoFever displayed a photo of Tuesday's price: $8.45 for a gallon of the cheapest unleaded. When the reporter checked with the national price monitor GasBuddy, its chief of analysis confirmed that it was the highest they are seeing. Last June, when the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a story that set off a wave of coverage, Schlafer's Auto Body & Repair -- a four-pump Chevron station -- was charging $6.73 a gallon. That was believed to be the highest in the nation at the time. Owner Judith Schlafer told the paper she set the price so she could make ends meet, given her high overhead. It's the only gas station in the coastside town, though there is one a couple miles south at the Little River Market. Schlafer's notwithstanding, Mendocino County has inexpensive gas by California standards: an average of $5.43 on Wednesday, AAA said. read more

We came from Chico to Mendocino for the weekend and picked up a roofing nail in our right front tire. The place we stayed had a compressor to fill out tire but it kept losing air quickly. We went to Ft. Bragg to find a tire store but none are open on the weekend. Once back in Mendocino, we pulled over at the Chevron/Auto Repair for my husband to put the spare on. We tried the door earlier before going to Ft. Bragg and it was locked. Fortunately for us, a nice man named John, was leaving the garage and saw us. He came over with his Jack, took off the tire, pulled the roofing Nail and repaired our tire with a plug, filled it and we were off. Thank you John for being caring enough to help us out. We needed a space to get under our Alpha during the 2017 California Mille. Owners and employees were very helpful and kind in allowing us to use the space. They didn't charge us nor did they want to except our tip, we had to insist. Thanks to them we took care of some minor repairs and we're back on the road in no time. Needed an oil change before my trip to the city, but couldn't set anything up in Ft. Bragg so Schlafer's I went. When I called they didn't have a problem with me coming down and getting it done within an hour. So i dropped off the car and went to run some errands in town. When I came back a little over an hour it wasn't quite done. The guys had to figure out how to reset my oil light which took a little longer than it probably should have. All in all it got done, and I am set for the trip, but at the price of $86 for an oil change I'll probably head into Ft. Bragg for a more reasonable price next time. I'm sure this place is great for an emergency as there aren't a ton of options up here, but for regular up keep it might hurt your wallet a bit. read more

Had some engine trouble as I drove along my way headed to Mendocino. This of course creates a great deal of anxiety as one is away from home and in unknown area. I managed to make it into Mendocino and subsequently to Schlafer's. I found Robert knee deep in another project, but he was kind enough to steal away and take a look at my car. Robert pointed his highly trained ear towards my motor and quickly offered a theory. He said if I left it with him for an hour or so he would do some initial investigation and give me a diagnosis. We returned and hour later and he had narrowed the problem down to a few possibilities. With a bit of further determination and elbow grease Robert isolated the problem fixed it and had us on our way. Robert is an excellent mechanic with over two decades of experience, a real car whisperer. As happy as we were with the service, we were just as happy with the bill. The fees for Robert's services were more than fair, absolutely dispelling the fears of being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous mechanic. If you find your self in need of auto services while in Mendocino Schafler's is the place to go! read more

Three times over the years I've found myself in a bind. First time I managed to get my car stuck in the sand at Big River parking lot. I walked to Schlafer's and called CSAA from the pay phone (at that time I had no cell service). The gentleman who drove the tow truck pulled into the station, asked me if I needed assistance and kindly took over the phone call to CSAA. From the time I got stuck to the time I was towed free was all of 30 min. Second time my battery died while running errands nearby. The two truck driver arrived within 20 min., got the battery going and later in the afternoon replaced it. Third time I was 15 miles out of town heading to Mendocino when a dashboard message flashed "turn off engine". I limped to the station where the problem was diagnosed and repaired within two hours. Yes, gas prices are high but this is a stand alone service station and whether it's a few gallons of gas or car service, I'm grateful to have Schlafer's in the village. read more

This last June my wife and I where able to get away for a few nights. First time in Mendocino :) During our time our vehicle broke down :(Alternator). That's pretty stressful to have happen. Being that we where far from home & on Vacation. This garage made the experience sooo much easier. Accurate on there diagnoses, Professional & willing to work with our insurance company. There pricing was extremely fair. There mechanic charged us actual time he work on the vehicle, NOT book time. That's awesome. I would diff. Come back & recommend them. read more

So today I found myself in need of gas and seeing that I was there in Mendocino town, I stopped at the Chevron (Schlafer gas & service station). Not only were 3 out of 4 pumps down but the gas price itself was extremely, RIDICULOUSLY over priced: $6.495 per gallon. That's right...PER GALLON. Now, yes I should have looked for a price, but who would have assumed the price gouging would be so high?? For real? I am ashamed of this place taking advantage of customers. A few pennies more is one thing but 3 dollars more per gallon? I will never go there again. read more

They didn't even try to call me to tell me, so I just wasted two hours of my life. This place is unprofessional and lazy. Pass! read more

On our way out to Mendocino, I managed to tear my mud flap away from the undercarriage if my car so that it was dragging on the highway. Worrisome! We brought the car in and asked for help, and about half an hour later we were on our way, car completely checked out to make sure there was no damage and the mud flap bolted back into place. As the owner of an inn in Mendocino, guests frequently ask me for suggestions or referrals. Usually these requests are for restaurants or activities. Recently, one of our guests needed some repairs on his car. He had a very positive experience at Schlafer's in town. He said they accurately diagnosed the problem, fixed the car quicker than promised, and were very reasonable. I think our guest was expecting the worst, but what he found was the same thing I have found in the four years I have lived here..an abundance of honest, skilled and dedicated professionals. I left my car there with full brakes and they gave me the car back with zero brakes. It costs me close to $1600 to fix their mess . I called Judi the owner about this and she refused to pay for the damages . It is well documented by second repair shop . She will end up paying more for damages she did on my car plus for negligence and life endangerment. read more

Our car broke down while traveling and was towed to Schlafer's Auto Repair. Judy gave me a realistic estimation of the cost and time to diagnose the problem. Late in the afternoon the mechanic identified the culprit, a bad alternator. Judy informed me of the repair cost and said they'd found the part in another town. After receiving my authorization, they drove to pick up the part and stayed late to install it. We were back on the road that evening. On my way to Mendocino this past weekend I experienced some problems with my car (stalled out on a very bad road). I managed to get it re-started and got it up to Mendo, but didn't know any mechanics up there. We decided to take a chance and drop it off at Schlafer's - this way we could just wander around town while they looked at it. Robert Hollister was the mechanic who helped us. Let me preface what I'm about to say with the disclosure that I'm usually VERY suspicious of any mechanic in touristey areas & expect to get ripped off...Robert quoted me a VERY reasonable price, and took about 1.5 hours to check the car out. I consulted with my very trusted mechanic at home, and he told me that he thought Robert was right on with what was going on, the car got fixed, and the weekend was saved. Honest, friendly, very capable/skilled, and not out to rip anyone out. What more could you ask from a mechanic? read more

Another long overdue review that I should have done earlier. Continuing our family road trip up to Canada in our Westfalia and after a previous breakdown a few days before, we stopped for the night in Mendonico (great little town, highly recommend it too!) We always noticed a bit of a pulling when driving but seemed to be getting worse, listening to our gut instinct, decided to have it checked on our way out of town and drove by Schlafer's. One mechanic had a look and quickly diagnosed bad cv joints. Robert came to have a look at it and saw the gravity of the problem and even if it was on a Friday and already busy, he took upon himself to get it done. When we came back to pick our Westfalia back, Robert said that the front left wheel basically fell off when they lifted the van and that we had an angel looking after us... luckily we had it check and luckily Robert and staff at Schlafer's were there to help and basically avoided a disaster that could have been costly for us and even others.
