a dining room with tables and chairs

Dinner at Schmeck's Villa tonight was our first time and it was a pleasant surprise. My wife and I have been looking for a decent restaurant alternative in the Exeter Township area, an area noted for it's limited dining options. Schmeck's pretty much fills the bill! Pros: 1 - The food is really good. I recommend the blackened salmon with sauteed ed onions and capers. Though my serving was just a little dry, it was flavorful and the portion was generous. 2 - Good variation on the menu. Though slanted toward an Italian style, it's not all pasta and red sauce. Plan on a nice selection of seafood, steaks and surf and turf combinations. 3 - The staff were helpful. My wife had some questions and she got prompt and informative answers about menu items. 4 - Unlike many "contemporary" dining options in the area, Schmeck's Villa is quiet and cozy enough to have a conversation across the table, or as we observed among some of the apparent regulars, from table to table. 5 - Real cloth napkins and table cloths! 6 - Very reasonable pricing. 7 - Though we didn't take advantage of the fact, they have a full bar and it appears wine is available by the glass with meals. 8 - Ample parking. Cons: 1 - The interior could use a bit of an update. Everything seems a little aged and worn. Thought not in desperate need of a "Restaurant Rescue", new carpeting and a coat of paint would go a long way. Matching chairs would help, too. It's always the little details that make the difference between good and great! Neither a plus nor a minus, the regulars tend to be a little on the older side. Patronage may be different later in the evening. We plan on returning. There were quite a few things on the menu that we're looking forward to sampling, shrimp fra diavolo among them! More than a 4, just not quite a 5.

Special Birthday Menu for a Friend

My best friend lives in the area of Schmeck's and comes here often. I've been here a few times and today it was cause for celebration of my friend's wife's birthday. Compared to the other times I've been here, although this was a special where the restaurant opened early just for this party, the food is good and service great. Schmeck's is dated inside and has been around for a long time with plenty of senior citizen regulars that come for a good meal and conversation. The very friendly staff have been around a long time and you'll very much get to know them on a first name basis just as they will you if you come often enough. For the party of forty or so people, two waitresses handled everything with ease and also poured the drinks for the open bar. The pours are very healthy and I know are reasonably priced. It's also a full bar, not just wine and beer. They have Pepsi products (booo). My veal Parmesan was nice and thin, well breaded and fried, with the right amount of tasty sauce and cheese. The excellent lobster bisque was buttery and creamy. A side salad was nothing much but it was fresh. The chocolate peanut butter pie I could have done without. My wife's two crab cakes had little filling and lots of crab. Her coconut cream pie also could have been dropped out. Schmeck's is a place for regulars who know the place well and have been coming for years. New customers will like it, too, but don't expect super fancy here. The food is really good, and service is super. I'm not sure what else is in the area, but I believe you'll enjoy Schmeck's.

They lit the fire and turned on the music for us, which was a nice touch. Overall the ambience was very nice and they took care of us. It's rare I order seafood from a landlocked state but the menu was small enough that you either could get steak, seafood, or a wrap. I went with the special of the day which was a flounder with rice pilaf. The flounder was good but the salmon was much better, would only recommend the salmon. The rice pilaf was good as well as the broccolini. The mashed potatoes were fantastic and the roasted vegetables were what you'd expect. Also had the ice cream cheesecake which was odd and wouldn't get again. Bill came out to about 120 for 2 glasses of wine, 2 seafood entrees, and a dessert. Overall, had a great dinner.

After the show went back in hoping they'd have late night food...nope one drink, turned on the lights at 11 and pretty much told us we had to go.

They have a large hearth wood fired oven in the center, and the place has a rustic feel. Cocktail menu has some classy drinks on it. Drinks were made fine and priced reasonably well. The dinner menu has a bit of everything. Cowboy ciao salmon salad was crispy and fresh, large and chock full of mix-ins. The steak and gorgonzola pizza was perfectly cooked and the gorgonzola was phenomenally savory! Definitely was surprised how good this combo was on a pizza. Had peach tart for dessert which was alright but felt a bit lacking after such a strong dinner. Presentation on all food / drink was quite nice. Overall, everything was great. Thanks

The menu offers appetizers, soups, pasta, pizzas, salads, entrees, and desserts with at least several options under each heading. The food was tasty and well cooked, and the portions were ample to generous. The service was attentive. The establishment makes it clear that there is a mandatory gratuity for groups of six or larger, split checks are not guaranteed for larger groups, and there is a 3% surcharge for credit card transactions. Be mindful of what you order. It can add up quickly. My companion and I wracked up a $200 bill between our drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Free parking is available after 5pm in the Cherry Street Parking Lot.

Here are some of the reasons for our disappointment: 1. Hospitality is significantly lacking! There is little to no warmth of personality in the workers. No smiles no guidance for taking orders of someone who professes it's their first time visiting. No one followed up to see if we wanted to or needed anything else after our food was received. They didn't even bother asking if everything was okay. Customer service has no personality nor a dedication to excellence. 2. To order/pay/ attain a menu, you must navigate and stand in line on steps which will be difficult for customers who may have disabilities or mobility difficulties. 3. High chairs are stored in the bathroom along with the toilet and other items for storage. This is quite disgusting as when toilets are flushed, particles are sprayed into the air and then will come to rest on the high chairs where patrons put their children to eats. Gross. 4. I specifically asked during the placement of my order if the sausage was spicy/peppery and was told "no", so I ordered it, only to have both myself and the other person in our party agree that it was spicy/had a kick. No syrup was provided either. 5. The toast was so hard it was like a rock and I never was provided with the jam that is clearly indicated on our receipt, and I was charged an additional fee for- nor did anyone come over to check on us or offer to bring it. Again poor service! 6. The floors and displays were dusty and boasted cobwebs. Observing staff clearing plates from tables I noticed that tables and chairs were not wiped/sanitized between customers. There are additional concerns we had about our first visit here, but I'm sure you get the idea. It is extremely rare that I leave poor reviews, but this one stood out and can't be overlooked. Just highly disappointed and I would never recommend this place, except for maybe a coffee to go, but nothing more. Save your time and money and visit elsewhere to avoid wasting it and leaving in a state of disappointment.

Even the complementary bread and butter is high quality--a bit torturous, in fact, since you don't want to spoil your appetite for the what's coming. Go big and get the Delmonico ribeye. Perfection. The oysters with the perfectly vinegary migonette sauce is a great starter, as is the butcher's bacon. Also, pro tip, you can get the salads in half sizes and you wouldn't go wrong with any of them. The caesar is my favorite, but recently had an outstanding wedge as well, with plenty of bleu cheese.
