This place is seriously the perfect place for a pit stop on the San Antonio/Houston corridor. Our waitress clearly loved her job and the food was great! They have a relatively small menu but I enjoyed that they not only had your typical southern country food and sandwiches but German food as well. It's worth the stop. We missed our fave Red Vault in Flatonia so looked for something in Columbus off of I-10. Schobels' fit the bill. It's large and family-friendly in a quintessentially small-town way. Comfort food in style and quantity. Not fast food (thank goodness--that was the point!!). He had the liver (sizzling onions on top smelled great) and said it was tasty, well-done, not too greasy. I, the lacto-ovo vegetarian, requested a three-veg plate of squash casserole (YUM), carrots and broccoli. All a perfect set up for pie. The buttermilk pie is very yummy. He said the same of the apple pie a la mode. I had coffee, he had lemonade (machine, not fresh). Free refills. $33 bill. Clean restrooms. Friendly service. Pretty much non-stop patronage. read more

This place is listed as a German restaurant, but they only have a couple dishes that are German. Pretty much everything on the menu is American diner type of food. They have the traditional fried breaded meats like chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and fried pork chop they call Wiener schnitzel. My husband and I both got the Wiener schnitzel plate which comes with red cabbage and 1 additional side of your choice; we both chose German potatoes. The first thing we noticed was the size difference in the schnitzel between the two plates. One was literally half the the size of the other. It turned out it didn't matter the size since I could barely choke down a few bites of it before I had enough. The schnitzel was so dry and tasteless, there was not enough salt on the table to make it taste decent. The potatoes were alright. They were simply potatoes pan fried with bacon. Still, they lacked any seasoning or salt. The red cabbage was pretty good, but given the quality of the rest of the meal, I am almost certain it's from a can. With your meal you get access to the salad and soup bar. They had 2 salad options, a salad mix and spinach. They had all the normal dressings and other salad toppings you would expect on a salad bar. They also had a few cold salads such as cole slaw and a chickpea salad. The soup was cream of broccoli, I think. There was no sign saying what it was. It smelled of canned cream of broccoli soup though and tasted like cardboard. The restaurant in itself looked like what you would expect a small town restaurant would look like. Nothing German about it at all. The decorations were minimal. There were a few very large spoked wooden wheel light features that would really set off a place if the rest of the restaurant matched them. We sat beneath a dusty dear head and stained dropped ceiling, which in it's own way added a bit of charm to the small town vibe. If only it weren't so disgusting. The only other wall decorations I noticed were three large family portraits that lined the dining room wall. Nothing like the most pretentious Duggar-esk looking family looking down on you as you eat. As I sit here trying to think of at least one redeeming quality to add to this long negative review, my stomach reminds me of the food my mouth forced upon it. If you are in the area, possibly traveling, I would suggest pulling off into Whataburger instead. I've never been disappointed there. read more

This is a good restaurant, service has always been great. You can order the buffet or off of the menu. Note that during busy times the buffet line can get a bit long. Their buffet is good - they have hot foods like soup, fried chicken & other meat choices, several veggie choices, bread, cheese, etc. They have a bar as well but it is still a family friendly atmosphere. This is one of my fave places to eat! Our family goes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have gotten most things on the menu and we haven't found something we don't like. Our fave breakfasts are: pancakes, breakfast burrito, waffle and French toast. Lunch and dinner faves are: any of the schnitzels, country sirloin, grown up grilled cheese, pork chops, seafood etouffee, fried chicken and any of the daily soups. There is a great salad bar that is always fresh. The assortment of pies that you can get is great. Any of them are good! I stopped here to get some dinner on my way home after dropping my child at camp. It was really, really good. I had the schnitzel with the gravy and it was so tasty. The red cabbage was not too sour and not too sweet - it was just right! The wait staff was friendly and since I had never eaten there before, helped me decide what to have. The salad buffet was great, but I ordered my main meal off the menu. Another reviewer stated the the menu items are even better when served on the buffet! I will have to try that next time! I did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. I will probably time my meals so I can stop there when I am heading back and forth on I-10. read more

What a pleasant surprise this was. Stopped on our way from Houston to San Antonio. Cute place inside and out. Buffets are usually disgusting to me but this was fantastic, fresh and clean! We didn't have to do buffet but it looked so good that we did. Also, I never eat meat loaf - theirs was great! The meatloaf, fried chicken, pinto beans, green beans, zucchini, all fantastic! Schobel's Restaurant is a great place to eat. They have a friendly staff, it is always nice and clean inside the restaurant. I have been eating there for many years and it has been good every time. Very big buffet with real home cooked food not the typical food found at many restaurant with a buffet option. You can't go wrong with ordering off the menu either. Usually have several main meat entries, tons of sides and great pie desserts to boot on the daily buffet. Any restaurant with a Texas Size block of self serve cheese gets a thumbs up from me. Should have read a little further on the list of reviews. Ordered potato skins and a Rueben. Can't screw that up right? The potato skins were covered in melted nacho like cheese and were way overdone and soggy- pretty much like twice baked potatoes. The Rueben had barely any meat, and what was there was like jerky. The cheese also tasted awful and that sauerkraut was definitely from a can at best. For being billed as an authentic German place I would have expected better. This must be a "locals" gem-and they must not like/know real food. Traveling through from Houston and I will be sure to keep driving next time. read more

WOW! What an awesome find. Very large servings of awesome German and American homemade food in a family environment. Lovely buffet but we ordered off the menu which included the salad bar. Loved the red cabbage and amazing squash ...I don't normally like squash but their casserole was awesome (I tasted my husband's and almost ordered another for myself until I realized I could never eat all the food I already had on my plate) the coconut cream pie had beautiful meringue a mile high and wonderful filling. The entire experience was top notch! Our server, Donna was great with our kids and made our lunch smooth and enjoyable. My husband and I both had the buffet which consists of salad bar, 3 entree choices, sides, dessert and soup of the day. Oh and a huge block of cheese that you get to slice off of yourself. I've been coming here for 20+ Years and they are have been going downhill this past year. There are many waitresses and waiters that are not attentive and have been seen talking to peers and not coming back to their tables for more that 5 minutes. The last 2 times I've been here they have forgotten part of our orders to go and then say oh it will talk 5minutes, well one time I didn't have 5 minutes to waste after already waiting 10 minutes to take it to go. Does not seem the Schobels family is having much to do with business anymore as it never use to be like this here. Very disappointed. read more

My beautiful girlfriend & I travel from La Grange over to Columbus every so often to eat at Schobels' Restaurant. Their food is always great and the service just cannot get any better. We each opted to have the Friday evening buffet on 02/03/2017 & it did not disappoint. And our waitress, Chloe, was just wonderful. A true Southern young lady that was both attentive & friendly with the manners that would make any parent proud. If you are ever traveling through the Columbus area and need a great place to relax & have some wonderful down home country cooking may we be so bold as to suggest Schobels'. Nice family centered restaurant. Ambiance was friendly, wait staff was adequate but not in a hurry. Portions were HUGE and a bit on the pricey side, but considering how much you get I suppose it's fair. We definitely have leftovers even though we split an entree. Salad bar was nice, but nothing exceptional. So...if you like American food (mostly all fried) with a pleasant atmosphere then you should try Schobels...at least once. You could do a lot worse. New place for me but was really good. Going home from San Marcos and I was starving. We stopped after seeing the billboard off I10. They have a buffet which I did get because the fried chicken looked good. The fried chicken was fresh and delicious. The buffet had 3 choices of meat, several sides, rolls, soup, and a dessert. Oh and don't forget a salad bar with all the trimmings. If that doesn't appeal to you, you can order off the menu. The menu has many different options. The waitress, Sam was very attentive and great with answering our questions. My brother in law got the jalapeno schnitzel which he said it definitely had fresh jalapenos. He really liked it. The chicken fried steak my husband got was good. It had meat not just crust. Some other places have all crust no meat. This wasn't the case here, it had a thick piece of meat. My niece ordered pot roast which she ate most of it and she never finishes her food, so it had to be good. The chicken tenders were fresh and big. They had a great taste and was seasoned well. They also had fresh pies but I couldn't eat another bite. So, we will stop by again on the next pass through and I will try one of the pies. We all enjoyed the food. read more
