Date night. First and last visit. Ordered our food received our salads and then the power went out. We were sitting in the back corner of a room with no windows. They moved everyone around us to new seating and even overheard their server saying she would take care of them with beer and cheesecake on the house. Our server was nowhere to be seen our food was delivered by someone else in the dark. It was now starting to really heat up inside. We picked at our platter for a good 15-20 mins sweating in the dark. We were trying to make the best of a bad situation. We were never checked in on after receiving our platter. While on a road trip, I wanted to find something very local. This place just screamed out "stop, eat here!" So we did. The nondescript little building had a full parking lot with Florida license plates at lunch time (always a good sign) so we walked on in. There were lots of old folks in the dining room (another good sign). The menu is mostly comprised of fried seafood, fried sides and more fried seafood. Did I mention just about everything listed is breaded and deep fried? If you like fried food, you'll be in wonderland! I ordered crab stuffed shrimp. The friendly waitress asked if I wanted them fried or broiled. I almost hugged her! Nothing says that you can have almost anything on the menu broiled, even though it's listed as fried! So take note! The portion sizes were pretty small, I was served a pitiful little dish with FOUR tiny shrimp, but the prices were fair. For $8.99 I only got 4 shrimp but I got a nice serving of squash casserole and brussels sprouts and an iced tea. So I can't really complain. There are tons of side choices above and beyond your standard cole slaw and french fries. You'll find Southern style vegetables and special veggies of the day. Cottage cheese, apple sauce, lima beans, beans & rice, pickled beets, peaches and more were side options. The seafood here won't change your life but it's a nice little stop and reasonably priced. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our server Megan was super great. Both my sister and I ordered the Seafood combo. I ordered the flounder and shrimp and my sister had the mahi and shrimp. Both fish and shrimp were excellent in taste. The onion ring appetizer, salads, and my coleslaw were perfectly prepared and tasty. Schooner's is a local favorite seafood place, with other options other than seafood (for land lover's) to sink your teeth in. Nice sized restaurant with a newly added covered bar/patio area, but come fast as they get packed! Big parking lot in rear, but it still gets crowed and you may have to swing around a couple times before you find a park. Serving sizes are huge so come hungry, or take the leftovers home for later. :) Greeted right as we walked in and seated quickly there after. The service is fast and friendly, In saying that, they don't rush you to order. They have daily specials, so don't just settle on the menu selections. Prices are very reasonable, especially when you see the portions. This was my first time coming here, I have heard ALL about it, so wanted to give it try. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is and the choices that you have. On this visit I had the daily special: grilled sausage with beans over rice, Cole slaw, and a side salad. I absolutely loved the Cole slaw, reminded me of my Aunts when I was younger! The grilled sausage was perfectly grilled, without the burnt taste. YAY! The rice was a perfect consistency and topped with beans, not a complaint from me! I was STUFFED I tell ya, but I had to do dessert. Yep, they have Key Lime Pie, and I can never turn this down! The pie was melt in your mouth delicious! I could just live off the crust! All-in-all a great lunch at a new place for me. I was impressed, and hope to go back again sometime soon! read more

Extremely disappointed! This was our first time here. The reviews were very positive and our neighbors highly recommended it. We tried to go 3 times but the wait was always over an hour. Last night we got in and here are my thoughts: The pros: - large portions - fairly cheap - no plate is over $20 - very friendly staff The cons (summary: terrible food quality): - it is a seafood restaurant, minutes from the beach, yet there was no fresh fish on the menu. The catch of the day was frozen mahi. - The gator bites were overcooked (chewy and dark breading). - I had the seafood platter, what a disappointment: the batter is as bland as water, you can only taste the burnt oil from the fryer, no flavor. 2 of the fried oysters were not cooked (a lot of thawed juice under the breading, I don't remember the last time I spit out something); the frozen mahi was overcooked and dry; the crab cake was extremely wet and very salty; the 3 shrimp had twice as much breading than actual shrimp; the fries were soggy and came from a bag; the broccoli casserole simply looked disgusting. - The restroom was dirty (feces all around the toilet bowls and sticky floors). All in all, I cannot comprehend the high reviews and praises unless people go there solely for large portions at a low price and ignore the quality of what they actually eat. I'm not a picky eater but this is probably one of the most disappointing dinners I have had in a very long time. I will definitely not return. read more

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel where we were staying. When we arrived, it was packed. Lots of locals, so we had hopes. The food was mediocre. You basic traditional fried food festival, although in their defense, they offered broiled dishes too. I knew we we were in trouble though when the sides were applesauce, cottage cheese, and creamed corn. (It's Florida, after all) I had the stuffed shrimp and my husband had the broiled scallops. What in the World is Going on at Schooners Seafood House? If you love frozen shrimp and fish shipped in from other countries, this is the place for you. However, their menu on the web does say that their shrimp and fish of the day are "local". Mahi-Mahi catch-of-the-day came in frozen eight ounce squares, frozen, and shipped from...Vietnam? Maybe the owners are from Vietnam, so I can see why they'd call it "local". I used to think that their shrimp was from the St. Augustine shrimping grounds...Nope. Boxes in the back say they were frozen many moons ago and shipped in from "local" Peru. Even better; the shrimp weren't wild caught (so much trouble) They were "farm raised". Delicious. I know where to go for lunch tomorrow...or maybe I'll just get some fresh local caught fish-fil-a sandwiches and fries from Mickey D's. read more

We went for lunch on a Tuesday after finding out about this gem from a local. We got there at 12:45ish and had a 15 minute wait. Once sat I ordered the lunch fried shrimp with a side of onion rings (which was a 1.99 upcharge) and fries. For some reason they don't serve baked potatoes until after 3. Disappointing. The waitress was extremely friendly and very efficient. All of the food is advertised as fresh and local. The fried shrimp was deffinetly fresh. The only thing that was disappointing was the breading. It was light and tasteless, as if it was just plain flour. The onion rings were hand made but fried in the same batter. Also, the batter on the rings was extremely light, almost raw. The meal was only 8.99 plus the upcharge and for the amount of food they give, it's an excellent price. Good place to eat and pretty busy. I got the fried shrimp and catch of the day which was flounder. Got the red potatoes and onion rings also had the creamed peas which is like a white Blackeye pea. This is where locals and early birds eat. Came here with a group of friends for the early bird dinner. The place was packed. We had to wait around 10 minutes before we got a table. This was at 5pm! Drinks were two for one including all beers or cocktails. We all ordered drinks, two beer and two cocktails. When our waiter brought the drinks he brought us two drinks each! What! Hilarious! Big misunderstanding but we were all in a good mood and decided to drink all the dranks! We all got the fried shrimp special which came with two sides and some hush puppies. The shrimp and hush puppies were the tastiest thing on the plate. The shrimp were butterflied and lightly battered. Crisp and fresh and not greasy at all. The hush puppies were perfect. Nice crunchy outside and soft inside and the spices were spot on. There was also a tasty sauce for dipping. We enjoyed it so much we came back with more friends the following week. One of the people in our group did not enjoy their meal. It wasn't prepared the way they requested and the waitress didn't do anything about it. This person said they would give them one more chance. Got a recommendation from my parents to take my new wife here on our Honeymoon. We are both pretty easy-going about food. Long as it's hot, and safe, we will eat it. Unfortunately, after we received our order (fried "catch of the day", fries, hush puppies, and onion rings) we were both baffled. Aside from the hush puppies, every single thing on the plate was room temperature, or partly frozen still possibly. This was bad, but wasn't a deal breaker. The real deal breaker was that the fish was not really fried, but was frozen fish re-baked. It was very leathery, and the smell was not especially pleasant. It wasn't inedible, but it was pretty unappetizing. Even the onion rings were cold and bizarrely bland. Were both pretty shy people, so we didn't say anything to the waitress until she asked us directly if there was a problem with the food. We told her, it was cold, bland, and we just didn't want to eat it. Her response was to ask us if we wanted desert. We arrived near the end of the early bird hour and were not seated in time to catch that, so we missed out on the food specials. The beverage specials did last an hour longer. The hostess was friendly and worked quickly and we were seated in about 20 minutes. The food came out after a slight wait. It was hot but mine was not good at all. I had the platter thinking I'd get to try several different items. The fish portion was totally over cooked and dry. It looked like the kind from the freezer section at the grocery. The breading on the scallops was so big I had to pull it off to find the meat. The oysters were rubbery. The crab "cake" was really deviled crab. The shrimp were the only good part. Side selections were interesting with several vegetable choices. Our server was friendly and polite but never refilled our drinks or checked in on us. This place had the BEST seafood I've ever had. It was an hour wait, so we decided to sit at the bar. We ordered the Seafood Planner and boy it didnt disappoint. I always go here when visiting my elderly parents about once a month. The addition of a screened porch with heaters and fans is a big plus, if you don't mind the loud music and traffic noise*. The food and service are always excellent, efficient and friendly, whether we have lunch or dinner portions. *My only advice: turn down the radio on the porch, and put an 8 ft. noise barrier fence along the sidewalk by the porch to reduce traffic noise. read more

I also had a piece of pie and it tasted like it was store bought out of the frozen food aisle. No problem we sat inside at the bar-- there is an outside bar as well-- and the bartender was very friendly despite the fact that she was extremely busy. Got a table for dinner in a timely manner. My husband had the catch of the day and I had the crab cakes. Both were nearly inedible. The crab cakes had clearly been frozen and reheated, they practically still had freezer burn on them. My husband was never able to determine what had been "caught" for the catch of the day. The sides were frozen vegetables. Very, very disappointing. We are locals and eat at Schooners often. Consistency is most important in restaurants today and Schooners consistently delivers great food at a reasonable price by a staff that is pleasant and efficient. I have had shrimp everywhere in St Augustine and theirs is hands down the best day in and day out. I particularly love their sides. They have many great sides to choose from unlike most restaurants around. I prefer to eat in the outside area or the bar area. Not a fan of the lighting in the restaurant, booth seating space is ample for a group and there are tables as well. You will find this is the place locals frequent and for good reason. read more

Less than spectacular experience. We have went to this restaurant for years, but like many restaurants in the area, they are short staffed and they let you know it with a sign to greet you. To be fair, the staff were welcoming and friendly. Our party of 8 was seated quickly and the server was top notch. Unfortunately, the food was the letdown. The diverse menu is generally a safe bet for large groups with children and non-seafood lovers, but on this visit, the food was not up to par.
