I first found this place when I moved to Montrose in 1997. I moved to Pasadena in 1999, out to Las Vegas in 2013. STILL, I visit this place at every opportunity because in the United States I have yet to find a better Frankfurter. The Braunschweiger is off the hook too! And the cheeses.......ah heck, the whole place is just great and Downtown Montrose is only blocks away--makes me feel like I'm in a 1955 Time Capsule. Love this town and love Schreiner's!! read more

I have been coming here for 30 years. I don't know what happened but the last sandwich I had was on horrible stale bread!!! I was blown-away when I attempted to eat it. I had to ask the deli attendant to cut the top off so I could chew it. I mentioned the bread was stale, and she stated I could heat it up. Again, blown-away, could you imagine. If this was the first time this happened I would come back, but, this is my 2nd expensive barely edible meal. So, I guess this is now the modus-operandi and I'll never be back. It's such a shame ... Holy Schreiner! Staff dressed in dirndles, a market filled with fresh deli meats, rare German novelties, along with German beer? Schreiner's Fine Sausages is nestled in an alley in Montrose/Verdugo (oh what?). Even though the few reviews here rave about the deli sandwiches, I don't think it's quite the star of this wurst establishment. The market side is much more impressive! It's tiny, but filled with common products (but rare here) of Germany: beverages, pastries, HAIR/SKIN PRODUCTS, candies, and of course a variety of fresh deli meats. I've tried their deli sandwiches and I appreciate their use of fresh cuts of meat, but it's no spectacular sandwich. I would very much love to come here and pick out salamis, smoked sausages, and a couple of beers and take it to a picnic or BBQ. They have designated dates for BBQ Smoke-outs. It's rare to find a place you can get a sandwich for $3.80. I came across this place when I was in the area because I had it bookmarked on Yelp. Once I walked it in, I surveyed the area taking a look at their sausages in the meat case and the other sausages found frozen. They had a variety -- the most I've seen at this sausage specialist. Even though this is a German market, they also had Portuguese linguica sausages which I was tempted to buy. You see when you arrive that it is home to "the black forest ham." It was natural for me to order it. At $3.80, it was a good sandwich. Not something out of this world and different. It's a really good ham and cheese sandwich. It brought me back to Europe as I found myself eating a lot of ham and cheese sandwiches on the airplanes there. I also noticed the selection of German beers and Boylan's sodas. I read that you can only consume the non-alcoholic beverages on site. I ended getting the Boylan's black cherry soda to go with my sandwich. Knowing that I would not be back in a long while since this is bit of a drive for me, I ordered the tri-tip to go because that was highly recommended by the guy making the sandwiches. I had it at home and it was as good as he said it was. I enjoyed it much more than the black forest ham sandwich. I also bought some Austrian chocolate wafers and German fruit tea which I've had in Germany. Loved this place and highly recommend a visit if you like good sandwiches, sausages, and buying German and Austrian products. They even had the Austrian Mozart kugln (marzipan) balls here. I went with four others to the sandwich bar here and none of us finished our meals. The bratwurst was all cereal and flavorless, the turkey was grade Z ghetto deli. Canned ham chopped into squares and drowned in barbecue sauce is NOT a pulled pork sandwich. Okay, okay, maybe in a court of law. But in the court of gastronomy it is an abomination. Why this place is packed is as beyond my comprehension as quantum physics (I mean, that cat's dead, right? There's poison in there.) We all left hungry and with bellyaches. I dunno. Maybe the uncooked meats and cheese's are the bomb. But if this is the stuff they're using in their sandwiches then count us out. This is one of those places that've been around forever and just because they've survived they get annointed with a reputation of being awesome. My family and I usually stop over at Black Cow Cafe when we're in the area, but they were closed. Instead we came here. I tried the gouda grilled cheese sandwich and the split pea soup. The sandwich was fantastic. The bread was perfectly crisp and the cheese was smokey and wonderfully melted. The staff was also friendly and helpful with choosing from the deli section as well (we bought a bunch of sausages to fry up). The split pea was just okay. I would have preferred a tomato soup, but my sandwich was still greatly enjoyed. read more

Great prices and good service. Definitely a one of a kind shop. Knockwurst are like a hot dog on steroids, but in a good way. Nice snap with every bite. Don't forget a good quality mustard as well. Beer brawts are great. They have some flavor infused links as well. Nothing crazy. It definitely is one of those places that you can get some quality meats, take to a BBQ, and have everyone asking you what it is and where you got it. I walked into this place just before 4:30, the door was unlocked, and everyone shouted " we are closed! " at me. Even though their hours say 5:30. I also had my 15 month old on my hip, all the meat was still out, and they still wouldn't serve me. Not the first time I was treated rudely by the employees here. When we were considering moving to the neighborhood there were two things that closed the deal; we were walking distance to both La Cabinita and Schreiner's Fine Sausages. I've been coming to Schreiner's for years now and I drop in most weekends to stock up on various deli meats for my lunches for the week. Great German salami, Leberwurst, knockwurst etc. All fresh and delicious. The service is friendly, prompt and efficient. Expect a line but it moves fast (see efficient comment). I am amazed that people give this place 5 stars because because of nostalgia when they went there when they were younger. What kind of reviews are that? This is the ONLY German deli around so its really easy to argue that this the best one. I went there the other day (it was not my choice) and I was not impressed. They still have the same handful of sandwiches to offer (that the employees take their sweet time making them) of which I consider a good snack. They still have overpriced beer, and overpriced imported chocolate. I like their chocolate, but you can find it elsewhere for half price. Their operating hours still suck. Closes @ 5:30pm Monday- Saturday (that is German?) so you can't go here to pick up food on the way home after work. Sundays are not going to happen because they are closed. I hope that the Mr. Schreiners granddaughter (she is running the show now) does more inventive, authentic German prepared foods for lunch. I know that German food has a bad wrap for bland food but they are in a position to create something new and interesting. It turns out that this Schreiner's in NOT, in fact, related to the Schreiner's in Phoenix, which is similar and also fantastic. That said, this Schreiner's is just as fantastic. The place is huge, much bigger than I thought it would be, and it's a veritable meat market. Every kind of meat I could think of, they have here. Their smoked products are good, as are their cold cuts, but it's the sausages that are so wonderful. I had their chicken lemon cilantro sausage last week at a friend's barbeque (he got them at a local farmers market), and they were fantastic, so I drove to the store itself to check out the goods. Awesome! Grilled the fresh bratwurst and although they're a bit on a salty side, they're very tasty. What's great, though, about Schriener's is that the sausages don't seem to have all manner of weird consistency problems from cartilage and stuff. Smooth, good chew, with a nice, snappy pork casing. Nothing is diviner than Schreiner's! Great sandwiches (Black Forest ham is my fave), top quality sausages and meats, and all the traditional German chocolate candies and sweets that are essential for a real Christmas celebration. Great service. Prices are reasonable, to say the least, especially for the quality. And it's nice to hear conversational German spoken in L.A. German-language periodicals and other items (soaps, etc.) in addition to a small beer selection are available. Prost! read more

Growing up in Europe, one of my fondest memories, and I'm salivating just thinking about it, is all the wonderful German knackwurst, liverwurst and other sausages we had access to. I was craving great sausage recently and dragged a friend with me to Schreiner's to check them out. I liked the fact that in walking in, I found myself surrounded by a bunch of women and children speaking German, so figured this place must be good enough to draw the right crowd. We walked down to the coffee shop on the south end, and I proceeded to have a lengthy conversation with the lady behind the counter about flavor and such, in an effort to get to a delicious sandwich experience. Based on our conversation, she recommended the Hungarian sausage and, when the french roll arrived with mustard, mayo, swiss cheese, saurkraut and hot Hungarian sausage, I was truly transported back to my youth. Yum! My friend tried the spicy polish sausage, but it had a bit too much heat at the back of the throat for me to think I could eat the whole thing, but as a "spicy" lover, he really enjoyed it. We polished off the meal by picking up a box of Liebnitz chocolate covered butter cookies, sinful and I've no excuse for the act :). read more

I visit about once a week, the sandwiches are delicious, from polish sausage to smoked turkey. And the recently added grilled cheese options! But i tried sometime new this time. Oh, oh, oh, and they are so very fine indeed. We came here after a day at the Descanso Gardens and they did not disappoint! Ordered up some excellent sandwiches - all incredibly simple, all incredibly delicious! I had the roast beef (it was properly rare!) and I even tried a bite of my bf's ...i think it was pastrami, which i don't normally like, and it was also great! The bread they use is just so wonderfully flavorful and fresh. They make a properly sour german potato salad, too, if you like such things. They have all manner of german beers (you're not allowed to drink them on the property, though, which is a shame) and a variety of european sweets and body care. I can't believe I'm only the 22nd review for this place... a great German deli nestled inconspicuously where Ocean View forks away from Verdugo on the Glendale/Montrose border. I came here thanks to hunger + Yelp and that it was on my way to wherever it was I was going. VERY friendly staff. I said it was my first time and they were very welcoming and had some great suggestions. I decided to go with a pastrami/swiss sandwich topped with coleslaw (extra charge), on a French roll. It was mighty delicious... great flavor and lean meat. I did have to subtract 1 star for various small reasons: - As delish as it was, and as much as I try to avoid gluttony, the sandwich was still too small (not enough meat, IMO), especially for almost $6 total. - They nuked the meat+cheese to get it melty. They should invest in a salamander. - They should get a better French roll supplier, the bread itself was pretty bland. But otherwise, I'm coming back... gotta try the black forest ham as well as take some of the sausages home to grill. I love me some sausage. read more

I was craving a sandwich and came across Schreiner's. Initially I was put off by the negative reviews in regards to the customer service, but seeing that the sandwiches are less than $10 (compared to others in the area), I decided to give it a try. I got the black forest ham sandwich. Flavor is good, my only complaint is that I wished the bread was softer/fresher (french roll). I also got a side of potato salad, but it's too sweet for my liking, however the price is amazing .79! Overall I am happy with the price and satisfied my sandwich craving. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich and found it to be a lot of bread and a little meat. Charge more and add some meat or find a smaller sandwich role. This place should be called The REAL "Happiest Place on Earth!" The most tasty fresh Brats I've ever had. The jalapeño sausage has just the right amount of bite. Their hot dogs had the nice casing not too spicy, just packed full of flavor. I bought some knackwursts there and they are so delicious as well. Everything I have tried was fantastic and you can tell a lot of care goes into the preparation. They have breakfast links also with the casing, black forest hams, sandwiches, and a bunch of friendly employees. HIGHLY recommend getting your next cookout meats from here! read more

Ausgezeichnet! I've been coming here on and off for the better part of 20 years. Other than having COVID-19 restrictions commonplace elsewhere, it hasn't changed. Its one of the few places where I can buy Hungarian sausages confident that I won't be disappointed. I recently purchased some along with their bacon. Gosh, you really forget how much better bacon can taste until you purchase some from a quality deli. Their staff is friendly and efficient while serving you from a huge assortment of meats, all trimmed to look great. They're not cheap, but if you're willing to splurge for a cut of meat or sausage that's special, you may very well find it here. read more

This is the best deli I've been to in the area. I was a little confused my first time stepping in here because the ladies working here are dressed in dirndls! They're famous for their black forest ham but I always get the corned beef sandwich. Prices are a bit high for sandwiches in my opinion but I don't mind paying a little extra for the imported sweets and things they also carry. The only complaint I have is that the sandwiches can be a bit bit thin on the meat depending on who makes it, which is a shame because it's so good! It's a dream come true to find German sausages and deli meats close by. When you enter the place it smells like heaven. They have great variety and everything I bought was so tasty! They even have smoked chicken, which I have never seen anywhere! Staff very friendly. You can buy German magazines here! Which is amazing too! Very hard to find elsewhere.
