Like I read on so many posts: 'I really wanted to like this place'. Well, I really wanted to like this place. I mean it IS a cool setting. I mean, really...the oldest German restaurant on the west coast! Dating back to the 1890s as a business and to the post '06 quake for this location, it has history, which to me is very important. And the Hermann Richter murals on the walls are awesome, no doubt. The beautiful wood throughout rings true its Bavarian heritage. The beer selection is impressive for sure. But the food, albeit quite good, at least this my first try, was not worth what I spent there. $27.00 for a .3L Hefeweissen and a Jager (sweine) Schnitzle with mash pototoes, purple kraut and Gerken...for lunch...for one person...well....I was more impressed at Stein on Clement with the food frankly. At least for the price. Again, I wanted to really love this place. But even as much as I loved the decor, I wish that I had seen it before it was remodeled. It is cool, but for my taste a little too hipsterish. But hey, SF is hipster and yuppie and techie central...they gotta cater to those types. However, I was hoping for more of an 'authentic' Hofbrauhaus, ya know, more heads on the wall...more, I don't know, German-ish. And more gritty old school San Francisco. And don't get me wrong, It's got the German thing going...but my memories of eating in Germany, especially Bavaria are working class and peasant; loud Ratskeller drinking buddies with lots of 'Prost!!" I'll give it another try sometime and go for the Knackwurst or something along that line. Let me say again that it was good food, yes...but for me, not so sure about the price. read more

We come here pretty often for work happy hours as it's in a very convenient location. Interior and service is excellent. It's all newly remodeled, and there is plenty of space and the airflow is also quite good, even when it gets crowded. Service is generally pretty good, most of their servers and experienced and courteous, we've always really enjoyed them. The beer selection is great, but the food is not good. A lot of it is over processed and doesn't taste like they were made fresh. Overall, come here for the drinks, but don't expect the bar food to be anything but decent. read more

Hoo ray! My Schroeder's has re upped their game. I am thrilled to report that I had a delightful meal tonight. I ordered the Jaeger snitzel and the chatuterie plate. Followed by the Anderson Valley Boubon stout. The quality was very high and made for an excellent evening meal. I will be coming back soon! Great place to unwind after work! Huge space, so great for large parties. I haven't been here prior to the renovation, but the decor is nice. Casual ambiance, but filled with financial district workers. As for the food, I've only had the appetizers, so I can't speak on the dinner part. As for the sliders = good, pretzal knotes = fair.... not as soft as as would expect fresh pretzals to be. Pricey? = yes Would I come back? = yes Enjoy! read more

It's a really nice place and very conveniently located in SF downtown. It's pretty busy in evening and weekends but you can get a seat after looking here and there. The ambience is very chic and I loved the rustic furnitures. According to the menu the place got established in 1838 which is pretty old. Coming to the booze and food, they do have variety of beers (can't comment not a beer person) but by the looks of people around it seems they were liking it a lot. I loved their appetizers though you won't find a very large variety but what is there is sufficient to satiate you. We ordered pretzel and kartoffel tots both were amazing. Just loved it. We stopped here one night while we were staying at the Omni. We walked in and the place has a very warm welcoming atmosphere. All staff we encountered were very friendly. We enjoyed the music and our waiter was so great, he really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The food was great, I wish I had a bigger appetite to finish my meal. Been here a couple of times after work for coworker parties and one time because BART was shut down due to a fallen tree on the tracks. From the food perspective, I've tried their tater tots and their cheese/charcuterie plates. The servers were very knowledgeable on helping us decide on what cheeses to select for our tastes. The first cheese plate was so great that we ordered the remaining selections on a second plate! The charcuterie was a decent plate of food too although a bit priced higher than I expected. The tater tots were a nice starchy option that can be shared among two to four people each. I have never gotten an entree as I was drinking beer. I usually got the Anderson Valley Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout as I'm not partial to German beer options. Based on the few times I've been here, I didn't see a lot of rotating beer selection. That may be my only minor complaint based on my times I've been here. Otherwise this is a great place for small or large group meetups. Lots of seating at the bar and at the tables. Oh they have that boot of beer thing if you want to try it but be prepared to have your clothes soiled in beer or your memory to be severely compromised for the rest of the night. read more

I have been here several times, and also we had a company event here. The beers here are top notch. They often have things on tap you can only find in Germany. The space is huge, misleadingly large. This was a really nice pub. Some of their beer prices were a little bit wild, but they do have some unique beers to try. Their happy hour prices were rather reasonable. If you're really into beer, I think you'll be incredibly happy with their selection. The staff was great, and they were able to create some rather nice mixed cocktails. Schroeder's is a loud German beer hall that has a huge selection of beers and a select variety of small bites and dishes on the menu. The decor here is so nice--you're surrounded by beautiful murals and decorations that transport you straight to Europe! I came for a happy hour with a large group of co-workers, and though the atmosphere was loud and rowdy, it still made for a good place to sit around and chat over a pint. I ordered the Weihenstephaner beer from Germany, and we also shared the huge pretzels, which were hot and freshly-baked, covered in salt and poppy seeds. They were served with mustard and cheese on the side, and these dips both added great flavor! We also got the "Vesperplatte," which was a charcuterie-type board with bread, a few different cheeses, a few different types of preserved meat (like hams and mortadella), as well as pickles, grapes, and dried apricots. This variety platter was fantastic for sharing, and it was fun to combine different ingredients and flavors into perfect bites! read more

Surprisingly great food for such a centrally located restaurant. It's a MASSIVE beer hall with big screens all over, but the food was exceptional. Perhaps needless to say, but anything potato-product this German place has nailed... tater tots, mashed potatoes, etc. all delicious. Service was a tad bit on the slow side, but frankly I didn't expect anything else during happy hour during a (Warriors) game day. I'd definitely head back again. read more

I went here to try the Impossible Burger and grab a German beer. It was an awesome spot to hang out, with swift service and tasty food. I also got the pretzel appetizer, and while it was good, I later realized the Impossible Burger is also served on a pretzel bun. So if you get that, I suggest avoiding the appetizer and pretzel overload! The Impossible Burger here is quite thick and hefty; probably double the size that they serve it at other restaurants I've been to (The Counter, Bareburger, Crossroads, Beelman's -- all in LA). So while it's a little pricy, you get more Impossible bang for your buck at Schroeder's. For my vegans out there, this is a great place to come with coworkers when you're in the FiDi. It's super hard to find vegan options in that area (especially in a nice setting with fab cocktails), so this will be my new go-to for business dinners if they keep the Impossible Burger around. read more

I used to love this place, but it seems like it has progressively gotten worse and worse. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. We ordered the soup of the day, Corn chowder and it tasted really doughy. Then we found we were literally spitting out chunks of flour. My Bratwurst was ok but not remarkable like it used to be. My guest's chicken wurst was awful, it smelled and tasted putrid. Sadly I have to say I will not be coming back. read more

Great place to enjoy good food, drinks and fun times. My server was awesome. He was so funny and honest about what to order and what not to order. We ended up getting a meat and cheese platter as well as a sausage assortment. I left there very full. But I really would like to go back and try the pretzel, it looked so fabulous! I agree with a prior Yelper - my opinion on Schroeder's is very torn. The drinks are very pricey, but you're in the FiDi so it's to be expected. It's the first place I was taken to by some friends during my first week working in the neighborhood, so I figured it was just a favorite local haunt. But once I (quickly) realized that pretty much everywhere else in a 3-block radius has cheaper drinks and better service, I was left wondering, why do my friends insist on meeting at Schroeder's after work? I concluded it's because of the well-dressed executive men that my single girlfriends enjoyed looking at - but this married lady needs cheaper beverages and more of them, so I haven't been back to Schroeder's in a while. I can't speak for the food because I haven't tried it. I've rarely had good service here though. The bartenders & servers act like you should feel privileged to be acknowledged. read more

Has anyone else noticed that everyone in San Francisco is 28 years old? I don't want to say it's depressing, but there are two things that really exhaust me in public spaces and it's when I'm older and/or shorter than everyone else in the same enclosed space. Thank goodness for Schroeder's. This place is old as balls, but in a good way so you never feel like you're the crypt keeper of the bar scene when coming here. It's like, you could go to a hip, hot new young people bar and it's like the Demi Lovatos and Taylor Swifts and whomever else is young and totally outside the realm of my understanding why they're popular. Or you could go to Schroeder's... which is like the Martin Sheen of bars. It's not a standout kind of place but from what you can remember it's not offensive and a part of it will remind you of a really old version of your dad, young version of your grandpa, or any of the first few seasons of The West Wing (I still miss you every day, Leo McGarry!). I came here on a weeknight with some ladies for some forearm sized pale German beers and some filthy girl talk and had a pretty damn good time, considering the general level of exhaust we were all feeling. The girl behind the bar was a fox, the beer was crisp, and the older gentleman sitting next to us was visibly uncomfortable by our conversation but still intrigued enough to continue to listen in intently and not leave when he finished his beer. It was nice because I felt like a whipper snapper in comparison to the general weeknight crowd and refreshing to see someone look at our conversation in the confused and disgusted way that I look anyone who's under 26. Inside there's a nice big bar and classic German beer hall communal seating with kitschy paintings of busty lederhosen-clad women and the sweet smell of encased meats as far as the eyes can see and the nose can sniff. It great for groups, it's not hyper trendy, but it is a great place to grab a seat (Yay for not standing-room only!) and a beer and have a classically under-rated good time. read more

Drinking a beer at Schroder's in the summer or fall is a good time, no doubt. But the food at Schroeder's shines in the wintertime. By chance, came here for a friends b-day right before Christmas and was blown away by the menu. Don't get me wrong, the food has always been good, but their latest menu really highlights German food at its best. What we ate: Roasted Beets with mandarin, goat cheese, pumpernickel, horseradish Käse Spätzle with bacon, cauliflower and herbed bread crumbs Wiener Schnitzel (a la hostein) made of veal, potato salad, cucumber, dill and an egg on top. Not only did I pig out on the apps, but the schnitzel was so big and hearty that it went home in a doggy bag and served as breakfast the next day. With another egg, of course. When chef Manfred came out to greet the table, we gushed about the food. He probably thought we were pandering to his creative tendencies, but it was no joke. The food was amaze. A good German girl likes all German food; however, I've never been a German food fan until now. The winter menu has completely changed my mind! Das es guten! read more

I love the new remodeled look! It still has the traditional German bierfest feel, and even more so now with the communal seating up front. Long wooden tables deck the front of the bar, while the back hosts individual tables for more formal dining with sleek round chandelier lighting (I only mentioned the lighting because I really liked it!). They also remodeled the bathroom! Thank goodness because it was disgusting before! Yes, they still have the boot. And if that's too much for you, you can always opt for the liter, the half liter, or .3L. They revamped their menu to a more refined bar menu too (well, of course they have brats, but they also have a nice meat and cheese plate too now.) Tried this place last night as a birthday dinner outing for my mother (she lived in Germany for many years and has a real soft spot for German food still). I really want to give this place 4-stars, but I just can't bring myself to do it... First let me say that the atmosphere/ambiance of this place was fantastic--easily my favorite thing about it. It has that Bavarian feel with the bench style tables, without being cramped or overpacked. The various beer steins all about were a nice touch. Our sever was very pleasant, well organized, and attentive (she had the German accent thing going on--I'm not sure if it was legit or a gimmick, but I didn't ask and it doesn't really matter). Here's why it's a "3" though... it's pricey, and the food just didn't thrill me. It was ok, but not fantastic. I ordered a Hefeweissbier and the bratwurst which came with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, apple cabbage and a brown mustard. The kraut and cabbage were spot on (and I can say that with certainty since I was in Germany only two days earlier). Sadly the mustard and the brat were bland/weak by comparison. To be completely honest, I'll probably go again (I'm a sucker for mood and ambiance), but it's not even close to my favorite German restaurant in SF. read more

Oh, well. At least I dont have to wonder what the new Schroeder's would be like anymore. Perhaps the "dark cave at the end of the time tunnel to 1975 " niche wasn't paying off anymore. I do have trouble believing that the "over-staffed, 13 Dollar burger-serving, culinary school bratwurst-presenting, plain american food dressed up with german accents" niche is going to be more lucrative. If you're looking for german food, go someplace else. If you're looking for a good dollar value, consider another choice. The old Schroeder's filled a (very small, admittedly) hole in my life that could only be filled with an obscure central European beer and a plate of heavy german food served by attitude wrapped up in a dirndl. I'm not sure what they're selling now, but I'm not in the market for it. read more

The best things that made Schroeder's charming, unique, and different are gone. The decor is the only thing that has improved. The bathroom is better. Things that got worse: 1. Beer selection: where is the Czechvar? Why are there American beers on the menu that I can get at three dozen other places in SF? 2. $14 for a Bratwurst? With no sides? 3. Where is the sausage plate? 4. Where is the goulash? 5. Pickles used to be free. Now they cost $6. 7. Where are the meatballs? 8. Where is the German schlager or European polka music? Team lunch was scheduled for Schroeder's & have to say I was pleasantly surprised Being veggie, there usually isn't a lot for us when it comes to German cuisine but we found plenty of choices The table ordered a bunch of appies to share so got lots of nibbles of: Spätzle corn, tomato, ricotta, poppy seeds - this was so creamy & garlicky & good - wishes I'd had a whole bowl of this just for myself Beets on a bed of honey-yogurt w/ pumpernickel crisps.....the beets were tender & very flavorful Potato Pancakes - orders were made with & without the bacon so I could indulge as well & wow were they good! Crisp almost like a cornflake coating & the potato-onion mix had a nice little kick to it. Baby heirloom tomatoes all piled on top & these were definitely faves of the table ( me included! ) Entrees ranged from the Bratwurst to the Schnitzel meal, the Schnitzel Sandwich, Sauerbraten, & the Chicken Salad. I ordered the Chicken Salad but minus the checken salad - it was supposed to be on this lettuce, quinoa & peach base w/ a yogurt dressing Have to say I think I chose poorly for my entree b/c it wasn't all that great. OUr waiter, Carlos, was very friendly and knowledgeable. He gave a taste of beer to help my husband decide. He helped us decide which cheeses to order on the cheese plate, and his suggestions were right on. We ordered the "traditional" brat, and it was a little bland,and the tiniest bit underdone in the center, but the Kasekrainer was very flavorful. The potatoes and red cabbage were tasty. The kraut was ok, just not like what we're used to in the states. It is probably authentic German style. Unfortunately,the entire entree was lukewarm. I know they would have been happy to re-do it, but we were to hungry and tired to wait, so we ate it. Overall the quality of the food was good, just needed to be warmer. read more

Once upon a time, I would have given Schroeder's a five star review. Now, it deserves a 0.5 star rating. The Neu Schroeder's is fancy in that S.F. / N.Y.C. restaurant kind of way, and that's about it. No more Köstritzer, no more Warsteiner, no more Radeberger.... The gal behind the bar has attitude, and the beer menu has been fancified with higher prices, more CA beers, and the usual nuevo-california foodie foolishness describing the beers: "grapefruit, pine, floral, herbed olives, golden raisin"; etc. I very much appreciate good beer, but... it's BEER for God's sake! And they've eliminated any unique tap handles, it's just a row of stainless steel pulls now. They kept the old paintings and wood paneling, but I don't even know why they bothered with that. I honestly have no idea how some reviewers here can give the place 5 stars now. It is virtually the same as any other fancy glass and fancy 'rustic' wood restaurant in the city, with menus and prices to match. I enjoyed the place for many years, but now, sadly; Schroeder's, you are dead to me. - I tried to update this review, don't know what happened - trying again: So - UPDATE - they have eliminated the Goulash soup, which together with a half liter of beer was a heavenly and filling evening meal. The atmosphere and staff are pleasant, but both beer and food are vastly overpriced. The käsespätzle (a German dish similar to mac and cheese which is sometimes served with a light dusting of breadcrumbs) was 50 percent breadcrumbs and bereft of any taste. The staff kindly replaced it, but the second one was little better. We were then not charged for the dish, but ultimately would have far preferred just to have been served something palatable. A litre of local beer served in a German-style Maas beer glass will set you back at least $18 apiece, with a German beer costing you about $24. Pretty steep by any standards. Truth be told I was more than a bit nervous to meet an old friend here for lunch, it had all the makings of one big fat awkward mess. But you know what, from the minute we sat down for lunch, it was altogether beautiful and civilized, and nothing like it used to be... just like the newly remodeled Schroeders. This place has been getting a remodeled recently and this has been a source of excitement for myself and my coworkers who frequented the "old" establishment. The last day or so we've seen people inside enjoying drinks so a group of us decided to see if we could get a drink and check out the new interior. We were very disappointed by the dismissive response we got from the Asian looking gentleman standing at the new host stand. Sorry sir, if you're having a private party you might want to follow the lead of all the other SF establishments and simply post a sign on your door. There's really no reason to make your once regulars feel like they are putting you out when they come in excitedly to see the new place and buy a drink. I get it, new ownership, new staff...yadda yadda. But, you should be welcoming to patrons even if you've failed to post a sign that you were closed for a private parties until your official opening. read more

German in name only. Unless you are getting beers and watching a game don't bother! If I could give them zero stars I would. I haven't even left and I'm this disappointed! They forgot to serve us bread to start. Which is understandable, but still the details matter. The schnitzel is a disgrace. No flavor, any thinner and it would be a sheet of paper, and the sauce only has a hint of flavor. Think of Homer Simpson yelling at the rice cake and you are pretty close. They charge $24 for this. I felt robbed the moment it showed up. I wondered why it was near empty for a Saturday night. Now I have an idea. The new look of the place is good, the atmosphere is good, and the staff is attentive and professional. Yet to call the food Germany is to dishonor Germany. Our whole table of four ended up voicing our complaints to the manager. He seemed like he had a speech prepared, like he had heard this all before, and did his best to try to describe to us what they were doing with the restaurant. To be hipster friendly with a California lean style to German food is pretty much what we were told. As well as if we didn't like what they were doing here are the names of two other German restaurants to go to so we can find what we are looking for. Well when I go to a German restaurant I expect German food! Not what was presented to us. It is clear that the chef doesn't know what he is doing. I shouldn't get up from the table feeling hungry for the price of the meal I paid for, which was what happened. I'm more disappointed than I am angry. I expected German food, and instead received extremely overpriced hipster styled food. You have to first be cool and be of quality to do that. I was told the menu is seasonal. Hopefully when the menu changes again it will get changed to something that resembles German food. At the end the Manger took off half of our bill and wished we would try them again. I might come back for beers and beers only, yet I am not going to order any more food from them until they can provide evidence that they know and understand what real German food is. What can one say about Schroeder's? It's been there forever and it's consistently good. At a recent lunch I had bratwurst with all the trimmings and it was as good as I've had in Germany. Everything is so delicious! I find the menu interesting as it's got a California spin, including avocado toast. If I go to Schroeder's, I'm thinking German food though not California cuisine. That being said, I feel like they have something for everyone. I do wish you could just get a choice of one sausage as a side instead of an entire plate - like an appetizer with just mustard. Great beer here and long happy hour! I enjoyed a bourbon barrel stout and a dark ale from Oakland. I also tried my boyfriend's happy hour margarita and it was well crafted, with great balance of bitter and sour (not too sweet). Pretzels are fantastic and arrive extremely HOT. Cheese dip is reminiscent of movie theater butter. I could eat these all day. Others ordered food which looked and smelled excellent and authentic. The prices seemed a bit steep though, considering it's pub food. Friendly service and fun games thrown in--stein drinking, stein holding (a strength competition for the ladies), and tater tot eating (no hands). There were people of all different nationalities competing. Great live music. They accomodate large groups well, but ordering food can be chaotic, especially with the loud ambient noise. I went here with my 10 of my coworkers tonight and was completely TURNED OFF. We tried coming once, it was packed and it was recommended that we get a reservation. So for today's event, we did. We were celebrating a few events: a promotion, grad school entrance, and a bday. We ordered drinks our first round and ordered some food to start. I would say we weren't there long until we received the check. The service from our waitress was atrocious. If the area we were sitting at wasn't an area for "drinks", it clearly wasn't explained to us. If we were told that we have to order xyz, we happily could have; ordering wasn't an issue we just wanted to settle a bit before we could think about it. We tried to order a few things and were denied. Add insult to injury, they dropped the bill off as we were told we couldn't order items. Not sure what happened. Food was decent, but because the experience was what it was: it SUCKED. Kind of like a pretty girl who has a bad attitude. This place isn't "fancy" enough to act as horrible as they did - it's obviously a watering hole for after work beers in the FiDi. You're a pub that serves beer and sausages for crying out loud. Put your pinky down. Would never, EVER, recommend this place. The whole front wall was knocked down and in it's place they put a nice storefront. It really opens up the place and gives it a better vibe.
