Sausage platter with sauerkraut, mustard, and pickled veggies for $40? Yes, I'll be having those 6 sausages in my mouth. Smothered tots were a bit meh, as they had canned jalapenos and some packaged, shredded cheese on top, but beers were fantastic, as you can already guess. Ambiance and service are as good as they've always been. Expedient catering to you, and great German hall feel with benches and tables, along with bar area. A rare FiDi spot that's actually open on weekends, Schroeder's fulfills a need for those of us who actually LIVE in the area rather than slog through Mon-Fri only. That said, there's not a whole lot of standout elements here. Granted, there aren't that many German-fare pubs around, so if that's what you're seeking out, then this place technically ticks that box. Arguably, the food is "fine," but given the city we live in, you can do a lot better than just fine. the real rub here is the service we received. on a VERY slow Saturday, multiple elements of our orders were messed up (requested a salad with dressing on the side, got a salad drenched in dressing, had to send back, got served an incorrect beer, got served an incorrect entree ... sigh) in addition to the food getting messed up a bunch of times, the service was a bit salty-to-rude as the evening progressed. i understand that servers can be bored on a slow night, but that doesn't really excuse eyerolls, sarcastic retorts, and suggestions to "just try it" when asking to get an order that was incorrectly made fixed. when my friend's dish came with the 5$ upcharge of egg and sardines (he hates sardines), he mentioned this error and the waitress grabbed a side plate and asked him to just "slide the egg and fish off the top" rather than offering to re-fire a new plate for him. i mean really? even if that's all you're gonna do when you take the plate back to the kitchen, you could at LEAST fake it / pretend to remake it. overall, i wouldn't return, and I hate leaving a bad review for a place that's generally fine, but the crappy service really set it off. if the staff wasn't so icy and indifferent, it would've been a much different experience. read more

I came here with some friends after a late night event. There's plenty of seating at the bar, at open tables, or in private booths. I'm not sure what time their kitchen closes, but I was apparently too late to try any of their food. Oh well. We just a few beers (it was IPA Monday!) and enjoyed great conversation. The staff members provide excellent customer service from giving recommendations for beers to cleaning up after drunk sailors puke all over the floor. My experience here for the first time was not extraordinary, but I would be down to come back again when it's a little more alive to try items off their food menu and more selections of beverages. read more

I have visited Schroeder's for over ten years any time I visit the City and have time to enjoy some dinner. It seemingly just improves every time and my most recent experience was incredible. I spent the day on the Rock with my family and friends which worked up a great appetite for dinner. I called ahead to insure that our party of 15 would be seated when we arrived while we waited for our boat to bring us back to Pier 33. Schroeder's was very accommodating and worked out a nice loooong table for us to sit at upon arrival. In fact, when we arrived 30 minutes early, the table was already set and awaiting us. Our waitress. Hanna, was fun, fast, friendly, and even spoke German! She along with the rest of the staff tended to our needs the entire two hours we feasted. The service for our parties size was top-notch. We ordered the Vesperplatte, a combination of cheese, meats, bread, and other delicious items. Everything on this tray was amazing! If the platter had been made of something other than wood, I would have licked it clean. We also ordered the Smothered Tots that are tatter tots covered in mushroom gravy, horseradish, cheddar, and pickled peppers. Um, these were absolutely amazing! The kids gobbled them down and had no clue they just ingested horseradish. :) My only complaint was that we ate them too quickly. The menu is filled with many German selections from schnitzel to wurst. My wife selected the Jäger Schnitzel and said it was fantastic. I was looking for something I have not yet encountered and discovered the Kasekrainer that is your standard pork sausage filled with garlic and Emmanthaler cheese, one of my favorite cheeses. When I asked Hanna what she thought of it, she replied, "It has cheese in it, that's all you need to know." :) She was absolutely right. It was one of the best sausages I've ever had! If I never find this anywhere else, it will be my staple at Schroeder's for certain. The mashed potatoes, red cabbage, and kraut that accompanied the wurst was very good. Oh, the mustard that topped the wurst was crazy good as well. Everything was cleaned off this plate. Others orders ranged from franks to burgers and everyone - and I mean everyone - was very impressed with their meal. That's a 15 out of 15 from ages 4 to...well, matured diners. :) My beer, the Andechser Doppelbock, was great and the flights were well enjoyed by the two ladies at our table. Now, if there would be any complaint about Schroeder's it would be one and it really is more silly than a compliant. I spotted German Chocolate Cake on the menu and it is a disappointing thing to find on a menu of a German establishment. See, this dessert isn't German. Not even close. It was invented by an American baker whose last name was, you guessed it, German. Generally, caramel and coconut are not ingredients you find in German desserts or sweets in general. I just found this interesting since everything else on the menu was pretty spot on with common German food. The atmosphere was great, the food amazing, the staff incredible, and the experience well worth your visit. This place is deafening, so if you want to have a conversation you'll have to shout :) Beer is good, found several German brands, not so many IPA, which is a plus for me. I prefer Hefeweizen(unfiltered) or Dunkel(porter). Glass volumes are in liters (no ounces beware), and they have authentic German 1-liter glass! Food is authentic German, with several nuances added to make it look more fancy and attractive, back in Germany I liked that they kept it simple, no fancy stuff. On the good side, you'll be full after one portion, so that looks German enough for me. Overall it is the right place if you want to try German food and Beer, but a bit noisy. read more

Came here for a friends surprise 23rd birthday and it was a huge success. We could be as loud as wanted, order as much beer as wanted, and generally have a relaxed casual time. They do not have very many options for vegetarians unless you want to stick to a pretzel or avocado toast. So I ended up getting a Bratwurst which was delicious. But the food was good, the band was loud (and unable to balance their volumes) and unfortunately, nothing I heard bore the slightest resemblance to polka. The long: After a long ride out to the Bay area to have the opportunity to kick back, relax, and socialize in this large venue was a nice treat. Up until my lunch today, I'd have given them 4 stars but I really was not very impressed with my bratwurst and Spatzle. Both left plenty to be desired. Prior to coming here, my friend and I were watching this movie with these German guys getting drunk and drinking "the boot". I forgot what the movie called. Whatever, but he was hyping it up and telling me this place in San Francisco has "the boot". I thought it was pretty dope that there was beer inside this glass boot. I thought this place was OK. Bartender who was serving us (young bearded guy) would not even make eye contact, nor keep a conversation ... ooookay . Majority beers on tap were American ... ooookay Marzen by GB out of which seem to be the only reasonable choice for a 1 liter (not a big fan of IPA guzzling) We also got bratwursts, two - what a waste so, as usually by tradition wanted to get some Jägermeister BUT! not only they did not have it from the freeze, THEY DID NOT HAVE IT AT ALL !!! German bar with no Jägermeister ??? but than i saw the new owner (or at least that bartender told me that is the one) ... Asian guy! and he was running with orders and drinks on the floor, where 3 chicks on the front desk were simply doing nothing so... my opinion ... i miss good old Schoreder's. Stumbled in here after our offsite across the street. It's like a German beer hall with long rows of tables; community style seating. In the back they have these huge square tables where if you're across from one another they are far away; good for private conversations. Beer selections are quite good. Very good variety. This night I had the Anderson Valley; a bourbon cask stout. Had a sip of the sour; definitely sour and refreshing. We only had appetisers. Tater tots were okay. But the pretzels were awesome. Come very hot, sea salt on a thin hard crust. The inside was soft. Comes with a ground mustard and this other dipping sauce that looks like Russian dressing but it wasn't. Everyone at Schroeder's seems to hate their job, doing just the bare minimum because they have to... like life would just be so much easier for them if you left and didn't bother them by coming to be a customer Last time I was there, I asked the greeter for a "table for two"... She didn't even make eye contact when she said "hold on" as she flipped through channels on the tv across the bar no fucks given. Then she finally asked... "How many people?" Its entertaining to experience, the indifference. My only gripe is that the food comes out lukewarm, not hot. And some of the ingredients at the brink of expiration, not fresh. It's all about the boot here. Sort of a gimmick, but sort of a piece of history as well, considering this may be THE oldest German brewery in SF, starting existence in circa 1898. Main dish I had was two links of bratwurst. Were decent, not outstanding. Same goes for the smoked sardines (with soft boiled eggs) and pork rinds -- everything was a good accompaniment to our [large] beverages. But yep, dare you get it, fill that boot up with a liter of good German beer (I chose Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier) and take your time mightily trying to finish it! No chugging aloud. I was super excited to try the Sichuan Summer - ever since I went to Chicago's Broken Shaker, I have been fiending for more drinks that involve Sichuan peppercorn. I ordered it... took three sips, and left the rest of the $12 cocktail there - albeit there wasn't much left because it's a rather small cocktail. It tastes very sweet (no spice to it) - kind of like mildly alcoholic koolaid, so if that's your thing, go forth and prosper. But what was criminal was the jager schnitzel. It came out and was beautifully plated. I dug in. Unfortunately, it was lukewarm (not piping hot) and extremely thin (all breading, no piggie). It might have been delicious about 10 minutes ago but had been clearly sitting around for a while. Perhaps this is service's fault. Great experience. I was hanging out with some family in the City and they wanted to try Das Boot beer, which probably has about 33oz of beer in there. To order the beer boot, you would have to put down a $50 deposit in case the glass breaks -- which totally makes sense. We ordered a few plates to share. The chicken wings weren't that great because it tasted like it was boiled before being thrown on the grill and covered in the sauce. I personally wouldn't order them again. The bratswurst sampler was pretty neat. They had 6 different types of brats, which all had unqiue flavors. If you want to try the different brats, this is a good platter to try. However, I wasn't thoroughly impressed with them. I would probably prefer them charbroiled for a better flavor. As an aficionado of the "old Schroeder's" I've been prepared to resist change - So hubby and I have only dropped in once or twice for a beer at the bar. Last evening, however, we were trapped downtown at rush hour, and literally could not get on MUNI to go home, so we opted for an hour at Schroeder's. It was rush hour in there, too - the place was utterly packed, and we almost opted out - but we saw a few tables at the far back of the room marked "reserved" with times on them. A very kind server told us we could sit at one up until the time of the reservation, so we plunked down and had drinks (beer for hubby, a German rose wine for me) and the slider trio: turkey pastrami, corned beef and chicken schnitzel. The food was excellent and quite innovative in flavors. Service was superb, with just the right amount of checking on us - and an offer for us to take a small table if we wanted to stay past the reservation time on the table. Truly, the service could not have been kinder. The joint was really jumping, and it was fun to see the crowd - mostly young men - having a blast, drinking das boot, and generally having the closest experience to hofbrau possible in our city. The menu is somewhat limited (I'd love it if they brought the sauerbraten back) but solid - there are several things I'd like to try when we go back for a real dinner, and not just a snack. And the wine list is a huge improvement over old Schroeder's. So - sometimes things DO get better! read more

Super loud, no flow, crappy choices, you name it, he cannot do it. You know your old roommate who had horrible taste in music and thought he could DJ, well he can evidently. Looking for a place to watch the Warriors-Spurs game, not expecting to find such a convenient location! When you walk in, it has a nice, cool, rustic feel to the place. We just plopped ourselves down at one of the long tables in front of the projector screen. Food was awesome, drinks were awesome-er. My friend was excited that they had the Paulaner, and I was excited to try The Financial. Man, that drink was strong. That little drink packed quite the punch! Our table got the pretzel knots, tater tots, and wings to share. I didn't try the tater tots, but my guess is that they were pretty good, considered my two friends finished the whole thing. Pretzel knots were hot and delicious, just the way I like them. Wings had a nice, sort-of-sweet/sort-of-tangy flavor, along with a little spice. I think I could've finished that entire plate by myself. Service was awesome. Our waitress was very attentive throughout the evening. I'm done with this place. I've come about a dozen times because coworkers keep having happy hours here. The only thing good about it is the beer selection. Everything else (food, atmosphere, music, seating) is pretty weak. On top of it all, the staff is rude and condescending, like our existence is somehow an inconvenience to them. There are so many other restaurants and bars in the fidi. Go to one of them instead. If you want good German food, yelp will show you several others that are much better. read more
