I walked in today and was so happy I did!! I walked out with 3 boxes of a variety of pastry and pizza strips! The lemon cupcakes were sooo delicious and the lemon mousse was mouth watering delish! They had beautiful cakes for all occasions along with amazing cookies lemon squares . I think I'm addicted to lemon after I tasted the cupcakes filled with lemon and a coconut buttercream frosting . Been stopping here for a few years when visiting Providence (mainly to get cannoli), but sadly the quality has gone way downhill. They changed their recipe to now include orange zest; the result was a bitter, acidic flavor and the cannoli shell was also chewy and stale - all of which made them almost inedible. Several minutes later, two young women emerged in the back room and neither acknowledged me. Then some customers came in and one woman came to the counter to talk to them. In a cannoli war between Scialo Bros and Palmieri's Bakery, I'd have to declare Palmieri's as the winner. I really wanted to like this bakery because of its storied history and because it reminds me of my local Italian pastry shops back home. The inside, while not fancy, just looks like the real deal. That's why it pains me to say the cannoli I had was one of the most unusual cannolis I've ever had. To say it was the worst is probably too strong of a statement, so I'll just say it was unusual. What was wrong with it? Well the size and cream filling wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The shell size was "jumbo" size (see picture) and the ricotta cream filling was overly light and fluffy. Don't get me wrong, it didn't taste bad. I ate all of it. But I think I much prefer the traditional style of cannoli where the shell is smaller and the cream is much denser. In the future, I'll try some of their other pastries and give them the benfit of my doubt because an entire bakery shouldn't judged by just one cannoli alone. However, I have some reservations because if they can't get their cannoli right then what are the chances of them getting their other pastries right? Right? read more

There are no visible nuts on this little masterpiece. Nope. Just yummy almond-laced cake hidden beneath real butter cream frosting. After my husband tried it for the first time, he has made repeated, secretive trips back to this bakery for his occasional fix. How do I know? The ladies recognized him like an old friend the last time we were in here...and he hadn't been stopping in here with me and the kids. The cat (and the cupcake) was out of the bag. He's hooked. Love that the counter ladies are sweet and accommodating - and remember their customers. Finding myself with an unexpected cake cancellation sitch last weekend, I was lacking a proper wedding-esque cake to celebrate the last decade with the huz. Whoever answered the phone was absolutely on board with getting me whatever I wanted - a custom-made (within reason) creation by 5pm that evening. Almond cake, please. Butter cream frosting. Mounds of frosting roses? Why - yes. And some pink Swiss dots all around? Sure (appeasing our three year old daughter). Sometimes bakery cakes can be dry and tasteless. This cake kept on giving with the same flavor found in the beloved cup cake...slice after slice. The ten inch cake was under $35. Amazing. Another miraculous feature of this old school bakery is the private lot for their customer located right next to the bakery. Totally customer - centric when you think of the parking space safari up there on the hill...in 'n out without any parallel parking hassle. Leaded glass exterior doors. Well lit cases with a simple, attractive variety of goodies. A great place to pick up some impressive desserts for a dinner party - or grab a loaf of "hard crust", skip a couple doors down to Venda, grab a bottle of vino - and your sweetie - and have a romantic picnic (even if it's in your own living room). Whew, day old pastry, over priced, no show of the oven that makes them famous, this deadly combo got me like :| I totally appreciate the traditional Italian method of baking which popularized this place, however, I wish they didn't leave their pastries out to stale. I truly wanted to like my currant and preserve pastry, but it was chewy and gritty. Not a single flaky airy bite about it. This aged flour and butter also left a film in my mouth I honestly had to rid with a cocktail. This place was so cute and we tried it on a day when it was ridiculously busy (like, Italian American holiday busy) so maybe it would be different if I went back another time but I just can't picture myself ever going back. We ordered two cannoli. They were piped fresh normally but because it was a holiday, they weren't. That's fine. But the crust didn't give the impression it had ever been crunchy--it was really full of bubbles and kind of fell apart into flakes--and the filling was sickly sweet and had more the texture of whipped cream than ricotta. I'm not sure if this is atypical for them or not, but it was so bad neither my mom nor I finished our cannolis (and I have a huge sweet tooth). I'm a little spoiled too because Hartford had a few amazing Italian bakeries but this was really disappointing. Maybe their other stuff is better but it would be hard to justify going back after such an awful experience. Could someone let me know if this is atypical? This place is such a step back in time that we didn't want to leave. It reminded me of visiting a bakery back in the day with my grandparents after church. The staff was incredibly nice offering and delivering samples of anything we were interested in. The ricotta pie is to die for. Scialo's is hands down the BEST damn bakery you'll EVER find in RI. I've been eating desserts from there since I was a little kid and my thoughts have yet to change. The staff are always nice and greet you with a warm smile. They've been around since 1916 and they sure as hell know what they're doing! Not only is this bakery the best, but they have THE best Sfogliatelle's in the world as well as the cannoli's and cakes. I highly recommend the Sfogliatelle's though. It was like bundt cake heaven. The cakes they have on display are so massive, they look like 8pounders. Anyway, got 3 pretty good sized tarts. Pear, apricot and I have no idea what the 3rd one was except it had cinnamon and powdered sugar on it. The pear also had a almond paste in it. I liked that a lot and you could taste the pear! The apricot one I did not care for too much, but in fairness I don't really like apricots to begin with. but I actually like the 3rd one that I have no idea what I'm really eating the most. They're all very light and delicate but with just enough flavors and sweetness to satisfy me. They are not heavy, overly buttery or dense. For 3.75 a piece I'm actually fine with the prices. They had cupcakes but they looked really ordinary and almost supermarket quality. Maybe I misjudged them since other yelpers say otherwise. But appearance wise I wasn't impressed. Nor were they above average size cupcakes and I had no idea how much the cupcakes were. No prices for any of the baked goods. Besides those tarts I did not find anything else that was too appealing for me. I saw cannolis, a few slices of square sliced cakes/tiramisu etc but ehhh I work in a bakery I'm looking for something more than brownies and cupcakes. But if I was in the neighborhood I'd stop in for another pear almond paste tart and the cinnamon with a custardesque middle. The ladies who helped me weren't unwelcoming, just occupied. Like other reviewers have noted, thier almond cake /cupcakes are THE reason to walk through Scialo Bros. door. I have yet to find a bakery that makes a better Almond Cake. If that is something that sounds delicious to you, you should seriously consider giving theirs a try. I almost gave 3 stars because other, non - almond items that I've tried have left something to be desired. Dry seems to be the most fitting word. I found their other items to be extremely dry. 3 stars became 4 stars because any workers that I've interacted with here, have provided pleasant conversation and service with a smile. On one late night visit, a customer had not picked up a "special order" cake. I scored that whole cake for $9.99! Happy birthday who? Who cares?!! Scialo participated in last nights Federal Hill Stroll. It was reprieve being able to hop out of the rain into the bakery. The girls working were very nice and happy to be participating. They were offering out cream cheese brownies AND almond job bars with butterball cookies! So my daughter gobbled up the brownie and I thoroughly enjoyed their almond joy! I agree with a previous review that better cakes are available at the super market ( and cheaper too ). Finding a new favorite bakery for myself and my family. KEEP IT ! Oh...my....heavenly desserts. Went here yesterday because of my friend. Their sweet treats look scrumptious from the super large cookies to the fun flavored cupcakes to the well decorated cakes. The last thing I should've done was purchase a treat here but I just couldn't resist. At first I was going to get a caramel cupcake but then I saw the tiramisu and it was screaming my name. I don't usually go for tiramisu but this one looked too good to pass up and I'm so glad I didn't pass it up. Nice and soft with a nice layer of whipped frosting, not too sweet or strong in flavor. While the products on display might look good, special orders could prove a disaster. For example, after ordering an almond and raspberry cake for a very special birthday party, it turned out that the cake, after cutting into it, wasn't at all almond but yellow cake instead. The inch-thick layer of tasteless butter cream didn't help the experience. What a disaster? And all this after the cake was ordered in person with clear, specific instructions. This was the key element in a big birthday celebration. It turned out to be a flop, and it ruined the entire birthday for the celebrant who wanted an almond-raspberry cake in no uncertain terms. After returning to Scialo's with the remaining 7/8ths of a cake (one tasteless slice missing), all the manager could say was "The order taker made a mistake." Mistake? There were only three choices for the cake - chocolate, almond or yellow cake. What does it take to get something like that right after going over the detail three times? This might be a passable excuse if the cake happened to be good, but it was a complete flop -- totally boring and the vast, bulked-up layer of sickly-sweet, tasteless buttercream put this in the realm of amateur land.
