Deeply disappointing experience I was styled by Wayne, a very kind older gentleman with a warm personality and great stories. I truly wanted to like this place and I trusted his long experience. I showed photos of what I wanted and what I didn't, then relaxed and let him do his work. When I left, I felt okay -- I wanted to give it a few days and see how it would fall after washing and styling it myself. But the next day, as I tried to make it work naturally, I realized it's simply a bad haircut. It doesn't sit well no matter what I do, and that's when I cried. It's very uneven and doesn't reflect at all what I asked for. I regret the trust and the $100 I spent. Wayne was lovely, but the outcome was really disappointing, and I wouldn't go back. read more

One of the customers of this place, while parking his car in front of the entrance, crashed into my car. The gray-haired man who was supposed to be trimming it saw this and came running over to talk me down. He started touching my car and cleaning up the dust/dirt and making the damage less noticeable. He was told twice not to touch my car, but he was a very brazen and sneaky guy. While we were exchanging information he ran off to get something from this hair salon. He wet a towel with hair oil and started polishing my car to make the damage less visible. Started talking some bullshit and brazenly kept doing it. He pretended he didn't hear me telling him not to touch my car and continued to polish my front bumper After my bumper started to shine with some oil his customer who crashed into my car ran up and took a picture. I have a Tesla and when I rewatch the video it all looks so artistic In general these are definitely not the guys you should go to because who knows what will happen to you with them in the next time. P.S. By the way, I was there once and I got a really bad haircut. There price is very reasonable and they have been there for 40 years because people go back and even though Im new they treated me so warmly. This is my first Yelp review, but I feel compelled to leave it given how poor my experience with Scissors has been. After moving here a couple of years ago and living nearby, I've come to this barbershop several times in an effort to support a local business despite their mixed to negative reviews on Yelp. While my first haircut was really poor with Wayne (my wife told me she'd kick me out of the house if THAT happened again- way too short; uneven trim of the sideburns; uneven cut along the back of the head...), I went back a couple of times and specifically made my appointments with Robbie, who seems to be the owner(?) and seems to have slightly better/more consistent reviews on Yelp. I found Robbie could provide a serviceable (although also inconsistent) haircut, so long as I was CLOSELY monitoring his work and giving him verbal feedback for adjustments real-time DURING each haircut. In my most recent visit, Robbie was busy with another customer during our SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT time and said he couldn't cut my hair after all. He pointed to Wayne who was sitting in the corner and told me that Wayne was available and "cuts the same way I do". It was clear Robbie was double-booked with another customer, but just decided to not call / let me know (and if it was by mistake, he most certainly didn't apologize for it and instead went on to attack me). When I asked him why he would double-book me, he rudely and loudly blamed me for "missing a previously scheduled appointment". And then he began ignoring me. The context is that I had accidentally missed a prior appointment, and when Robbie called me back then, I apologized profusely and offered to come in as soon as he was available (2 days later), which was our scheduled appointment which I am writing this review about. One of the earlier reviews said these guys' philosophy is "the customer is always wrong". I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!! I HIGHLY recommend people avoid getting haircuts here -- between the poor quality of the haircuts; price (NOT cheap all-in when including tip); and culture/rudeness of the employees (starting from the top with Robbie the owner),....it's not worth it! These guys have been here forever and I believe they own the land/shop; and so it's the epitome of just taking advantage of customers who walk / call in given their nice location near the beach, rather than caring at all about quality or customer service. read more

My 14 year old son booked a haircut with Dennis two weeks in advance. Once he got there the guy at the front desk gave my son to another person without any explanation. In the middle of the haircut the hairdresser left saying he was done with my son. I know sometimes is tough dealing with a teenager, but just leaving a client, saying I can't deal with his request and I have other clients is no good. If you don't know how to deal with customers you shouldn't do this kind of job. For the records, we still paid and after the person at the front desk got the money he said we could come back another time, seriously? read more

The ends of my hair have lightened much faster than the terrible top. It's an embarrassing look, like a helmet. Recently a salon explained the process of semi-permanent hair coloring. The color was left on the top of my hair much longer than the ends. Makes sense since after applying the color to the top, I remember him standing there whining about his partner, Robbie, the salon owner. To the point I pointed at my head to remind him what he was doing. Not my problem his boyfriend/husband is mentally ill. Grateful a PROFESSIONAL could fix this disaster. Spare yourself! read more

Oh my goodness! I am so so happy to have found this gem conveniently located in the ocean park section of Santa Monica! Robbe is the absolute best! I decided to go bold and had him take off inches of hair off. He spent hours perfecting it, when I simply called and was in the hairdresser's chair 15 minutes later. Not only is Robbe incredibly talented, he's an absolute character, we spent the whole afternoon cracking jokes like we've known each other for years. Love love love the haircut, service, and experience of getting my haircut here. Walked in and was seen right away. He knew I was sensitive about letting someone cut my currently growing hair but I desperately needed a cut after letting my blonde grow out and dying my hair back to black. He knew exactly what I meant when I said, I need my bangs fixed so they can grow, and he trimmed the ends just enough to give my hair it's life again as well as keep me happy with the length. Really really scary experience. Do not go to Wayne. He is really unstable. He was getting more and more moody as the session progressed, not responding to feedback that I didn't like the way he was cutting my hair (end result was horrendous and looking like something out of a Friends episode). Flipped out when I told him it looked nothing like the picture I showed him, saying that "well you are not a blonde and you don't look like that" when it was obvious that he had messed up. Called me rude and said I was taking out my anger on him (had to take a call where I had to sternly tell my kid I would take away his toy if he didn't get out of the car with the nanny as he was late to pick up his sister)- Wayne mom-shamed me and accused me of taking out my "anger at your nanny" (not true) on him. He also asked me where I was from (I look middle eastern) and then asked whether I was born here, etc, etc. it was a terrible experience. Do not ever go here. And the worst part is that getting home I realized that half my head is an orangey-brown and the other bottom half is black. Not sure how he could mess up a single process but that happened too. Do not go to this hair salon if you are a woman. Dennis is the worst stylist ever. After growing my hair out for two years, there was a lot to work with to cut it like a shag. I even showed a picture. Instead of focusing on my hair he did a whole show bragging about himself and chopping off my hair carelessly. Instead of a shag he gave me a mullet. I just moved to west la from NYC and was looking for a colorist who knew how to handle Asian hair. I was recommended from a friend to go to Hyunsoo at Scissors so I decided to try it out. When I went in, he already told me what I needed, which is also exactly what I wanted- to take the brassiness out of my previous color. He toned my hair and added some lighter pieces to the front as a courtesy bc he thought it would look better- and I loved it! He was genuinely concerned w the health of my hair and was letting me know the whole way exactly what he was going to be doing and explaining why. I still want my hair lighter so he recommended for me to come every few weeks and do it gradually, which is what I've been doing. I'm happy w my hair every time I leave and I appreciate that Hyunsoo takes his time w me, doesn't jump around between clients, and is honest and realistic w what I want w my hair and how I can achieve it. I discovered the amazing & beautiful Miriam at her former Salon of many years, then one day there was the covid lock-down, and her salon eventually went dark... They posted a sign to follow them all to a new salon farther away, and I was going to patronize the new place, until one day to my happiness I was told by Larry the great nail guy that she was working with him at a salon just down the street!! It is the cutest and coolest salon and everyone there is really nice! They have an open air type window wall, and it is really a relaxing salon~ Now to the hair, when I first discovered her approx. 7 years ago, she took my once stunning blonde to a gorgeous one again with highlights & her amazing way with a pair of scissors, brush and hairdryer!! A friend gifted me a haircut by Hyunsoo and I can say with utmost certainty that he's completely next-level. I can't imagine that there is a man on earth with the same dexterity as his, and he has a truly unique eye. In my 35 years I've never had a haircut grow out so nicely (and I've paid for a lot of expensive cuts); would prefer that he is the only person to cut my hair again. Nailed it on the first try. However, to elaborate Robbie and Sebastian in particular have kept me looking my best even when I wasn't! Robbie has given me an assortment of cuts over the years and altered them to fit my present state of mind. I've gone short, long, Bob, layers and I loved them all! I always get so many compliments on my color and mainly that people don't realize that I color my hair because it looks so natural. But the best thing about scissors are the peeps. This is a very cute hair salon on Main street with many great food options nearby. I come here for Hyunsoo and he's amazing! My hair is fine and curly and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the results every time. He's very intuitive and knows what will look good on me so I usually just let him do his thing. His sense of color is unmatched. I always walk out with the most gorgeous shades of blonde that complement my skin tone and last for a long time, and it grows out beautifully too. Bottom line: when I see Hyunsoo at Scissors, I walk out as a better version of me - with a haircut I can maintain with next to no effort (very important to me!) and color to last me for months. read more

Please avoid this salon. I'm sure some of the stylists here are professional but I had a really bad experience with James. I'd been a client of James' for a year and followed him to 3 different salons that he'd worked at during that time. The fact that he had worked at so many salons in such a short space of time should have been a warning to me but unfortunately I followed him to Scissors. My husband was also a client of his and had a bad haircut. James had double booked him but decided to cut his hair and his other client's anyway. When my husband left he was really unhappy with his hair, it was uneven on one side. When my husband politely asked James if he could come in for it to be fixed, James was very unprofessional. He proceeded to call my husband and myself numerous times, leaving multiple voicemails and text messages on both myself and my husband's phone. To be honest he completely terrified me and I ended up having to have his phone number blocked. When my husband contacted the salon they did absolutely nothing and as far as I know, he still works there. read more

It was like hanging out at Central Perk getting my hair done. They don't over-charge and they treat you like an dear, old friend. They've been on Main Street 30 years for a good reason. I brought my little dog with me and they loved her up and made it easy for me to have her with me. I work long hours during the week and I felt bad leaving her at home. Robbie and Sebastian let her hang on while they spun their magic. Sebastian did my color and Robbie did my cut. They are excellent at their craft and made me look amazing. Every month, I have to go to the Main Street. Like an addict to his dealer. My hair. There are hundreds of hair salons in between. Some nearby has stylists that look like models themselves. But instead of eye candy stores on the Main Street, I've been coming here for years because of Robbie. 've done some crazy things to my hair in my youth, more conservative things in the last few years. They all came out great -- so others tell me -- and the few times I tried other places, I never got any compliments, nor any interesting conversation. Robbie provides both. So I come back to Robbie. He's never on time - which used to irritate the heck out me, and one time I promised to never come back -- but in a few months I had to. Now I shut up. This is the only place I go. I'm more zen about waiting -- and spend time waiting at various cafes in the area to do my eye candy shopping. Robbie and others in the store used to do shows (and Robbie was also an instructor) for a very high end hair product company and model shoots. Most of them also have the Industry experience, both in Entertainment and Fashion. So the clients here are very interesting mix -- stars, models, record executives, beach bums, tourists, wealthy cougars, or just a guy off the street (that's me). One thing for sure, this place has no Hollywood attitude. This is a very laid back beach attitude of old Santa Monica. I'd say it's a little gem. My wife has used him, too, for many many years. She's more pickier than I am -- and less tolerating of wasted time -- but he's too good to give up so we still come here. She says he's amazing at coloring. Without too much ego and "look at me," of most LA stylist scene, this is one of the oldest and coolest leisure establishments on the Main street. Watching all the people pass by on the street is a fun way to see Santa Monica on leisurely weekend. The haircut for man is about $30-35. Women? I have no idea. Which reminds me, I should check my wife's credit card bill. read more

I miss my regular appointments with Robbie and Sebastian. When I lived in California I went to them for years. I got hooked during grad school when I asked a friend for advice on inexpensive highlights on the westside. She sent me straight to Sebastian. I love the huge personalities and terribly enjoy listening to Robbie and Sebastian bicker, insult the french stylist who also works there, talk about crazy clients who randomly pass by the store, gossip over celebrities, etc. The multiple accents (Sebastian = Mexican, and Robbie = British) make the entire experience all the more enjoyable. Its far from a peaceful zen-like spa experience, which I don't mind and actually prefer all the swearing, insulting, and hilarity. Like an old British comedy... True, it takes forever to get in and out of that place (don't even BOTHER trying to park on the street--you will go over time and you WILL get a ticket), and yes, they are sometimes late and often running behind schedule. But its because they are such perfectionists, and no matter how annoyed I might be at the tardiness, I appreciate it when they are meticulously touching up, trimming, conditioning, blowdrying, flatironing, and styling my own 'do. Honestly, Sebastian's color is amazing, and Robbie's cuts are to die for. It doesn't get any better. Actually, it does, because they are cheap chEAP CHEAP! Which is quite nice because Urth Caffe is on the same block and inevitably I end up getting a drink from there while waiting for previously-mentioned belated hairdresser(s). If I were in LA I would totally still be going there. read more

Walked by this place on my way to Urth Cafe and Jad saw me on the sidewalk, casually said "yeah, your hair's a bit heavy on top" and introduced himself. I hadn't planned to get a haircut (even though I needed one), but he sure as hell seemed like he knew what he was talking about. Best haircut of my life. Jad was a no-bs guy from memphis who shockingly knew more about hair than any other person I've ever encountered. He talked me through my head shape and the texture of my hair and gave me a cut that actually worked for me... not just what someone teaches at a beauty school. Highly recommended. read more

I approached a colleague of mine who has perfect curly hair, cut and color - she immediately recommended Hyunsoo. At my first appointment with Hyunsoo, he truly listened to what I wanted in terms of color. This was extremely refreshing! He not only listens but he is extremely flexible with appointment times. I have never had a stylist be so flexible with accommodating me. I am extremely happy with my cut and color with Hyunsoo, I clearly am because I keep coming back to him. Five stars all around! Robie did a masterful job with my highlights and haircut!!! He gave my hair a complete makeover from the out-of-control pandemic frizz it had become. He's very talented and meticulous, which is matched by wonderful service and a fun atmosphere. You will leave feeling pampered! It's the perfect place to get hair services with extra COVID precautions. The salon has large open windows and there's great ventilation; it's essentially like the salon is outside. Masks are enforced and clients are spaced out at least 6 feet apart. They are frequently sanitizing surfaces, and it was very clean. Everyone is very friendly and competent and the pricing is very good/competitive. I researched salons in the Santa Monica/West LA area and could not find other salons offering outside services like this salon. Robie is a great talent. I'll definitely be coming back! read more
