Heart of OB with walking distance to the beach I ordered the mango sticky rice. Definitely had a mango flavor, but not so much sticky rice. It's hard because I'm comparing it to Stella Jean's mango sticky rice and that is definitely much better. The mouth feel was also a little bit off. Staff were nice enough, but there were four people working and I still stood there for a bit waiting for my order to be taken, even though there was no other customers in the store. Honestly, this place was great!! I hardly ever see ice cream shops with a multitude of dairy free options - typically they only offer sorbet. I had a dairy free chocolate brownie milkshake and it was rich, thick, and didn't have that weird after taste some vegan ice creams have. The passion fruit sorbet was also to die for! I was in the mood for ice cream after dinner at La Dona. The other place had a line, but I remembered Scoops from walking around last time and thought I'd give it a try. It's on the strip so lots of walking traffic. They have some tables outside which is nice. Inside smells so good! Looking at the menu, the passion fruit sorbet caught my eye. Excellent friendly service! My first time here, just passing by and noticed Pistachio flavor on their sign -but they sold out and she didn't mind me trying various flavors to pair with Earl Grey. Solid place to get a nice cold, sweet treat while in the area. They had some interesting flavors on the menu board, and did allow for sampling when asked. The staff were real cool, and were great even though we were a larger group that came in. I really enjoyed the ice cream, and I'd say they gave appropriate sized scoops. I went with chocolate and added peanut butter cups, and the best part? They actually mix the toppings in instead of just tossing them on top. It's the little things, you know? Here's the Scoop! Ocean Beach is it's third ice cream shop open here, the first and second are in La Jolla. Street parking can be a challenge. Note: Wednesdays the farmers market is on Newport which is the same street this ice cream shop is on and some streets are blocked off, so parking is more of a challenge. While out and about in Ocean Beach, I stopped inside this newly opened ice cream shop. It is small but had limited outdoor and indoor seating, was bright clean and as I observed the staff of servers behind the counter, they wore new gloves before serving each customer, and this practice of cleanliness scores high in my book. The nice and cool server, Sam washed her hands and put on new gloves before serving me and she had a genuine positive attitude, and I made sure I said I appreciate and thanked her :) The menu also offers coffee drinks, açai bowls and crepes. It's my understanding that Scoops sources it's ice cream from Van Leeuwen ice cream, who makes hand crafted ice cream using simple and natural ingredients. The ice cream menu listed classic ice cream flavors as well as vegan flavors. The later is what appealed to me and chose the Oat strawberry shortcake and the Oat Chocolate Chip cookie dough in the smallest cup, both flavors were not too sweet and just so yummy! Even my pup Fendi liked it. Some of the Ice cream flavors are seasonal so new flavors are created and I would certainly agree with their moniker: 'Living the Sweet Life,' with Scoops ice cream. Ice cream was so so - has the brownie espresso. Was excited to try the toasted marshmallow on it but the tool was broken - discovered after I paid and marshmallow was on it. The ice cream is good but the customer service is awful. I tried a sample and they gave it to me on this little metal spoon. I held onto the spoon, bought my ice cream, and went to sit down inside to eat. I had planned on using the little spoon because it was so cute. When I went to sit, the worker told me I had to return the spoon. I said I definitely would. I was just going to sit down and eat and then return it. He would literally have seen me the whole time. He got hostile and said that I wasn't allowed to do that and acted like I was a thief trying to steal his precious spoon. Does it come out of his paycheck or something? Being treated like a criminal left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I won't be returning. There are much better options for ice cream anyway: Lighthouse and Ann's. read more

I remember I tried Scoops a long time ago at La Jolla Shores when I lived at there. This time I found their new location at Ocean Beach. I was in ice cream mood and went in for a small split scoop. There was one customer in front of me, but the staff was chatting with him and his dog for a while, so I waited for like 5 plus minutes. When it was my turn, there's another customer behind me, the staff was a little rush, I think it's not her fault because it was literally only herself in the store. I think she needs a helper. I tried a few flavors, and to be honestly, none of them really impressed me comparing to other gelato and ice cream shops. We are never in OB, but I'm glad we were there early enough to pop into Scoops right before they closed. We might've rushed dinner to ensure we had time haha. The vegan flavors caught my eye, there were a lot to choose from which is nice. I ordered the vegan banana bread pudding and threw caution to the wind with a non dairy brown sugar cookie dough brownie. So creamy! The brownie bits were plentiful, but I think my scoop just didn't hit the right spot for cookie dough. The banana bread pudding scoop was delightful! It was such a good mix of tasting like banana bread with bread chunks to also tasting like banana pudding. I tried the blue jasmine passion fruit swirl and oh my goodness it was so good! After having shawarma, there's an ice cream shop nearby. I randomly picked two flavors, coriander and pistachio, and they were surprisingly delicious! The shop is always crowded with customers, and sometimes there's a long queue. The prices are also very reasonable. Two scoops of two flavors cost 6.76. First off, love this new location! I'm also a big fan of their La Jolla locations. Right off the bat, the staff is super friendly & welcoming. All of their recommendations were so good. I think my favorite thing about Scoops is that they have so many options to choose from, & tons of vegan ones at that! If I could stomach it, I would've gotten the strawberry, honeycomb & mango.
