If I've learned anything from living in Maine, it's support local and the weather can always be worse. I was looking for a great local diner in an area within a sea of chain restaurants to grab a bit of breakfast. I had a hankering for pancakes so when I read a couple reviews stating how fluffy and delicious their stacks were, I was drawn in. I called ahead because I can't fully enjoy a pancake experience without real maple syrup and the hostess confirmed that they stocked it. Upon arrival, it was apparent that this was the place to be, even on a Monday morning. We waited about 20 min to be seated. Once seated the server came over immediately and took our drink order. It went downhill from there. I ordered their house cured corned beef hash and 2 eggs ($6) and a tall stack of pancakes. I inquired with the server about the maple syrup before hand and she stated that they only had pancake syrup (also known as Mrs Butterworth). The food took about 45 min to come out of the kitchen, which for breakfast food, is a little odd, but the place was busy. When the food finally came, the server offered some of their house made ketchup and their house made hot sauce. Both were tasty, but I really wanted house tapped syrup. I quickly dug into my hash and found it to be dry and overcooked. Overall, I was pretty underwhelmed. The service is slow and the food is pricey. I will continue to support local, but I may need to branch out of the Region. read more

I will gladly pay cash in whatever denominations required to enjoy the food that the Scrambled Egg Diner offers to an area that features Greek restaurants (with all due respect to them) and donut shops as the only options. This place is the real deal with respect to homemade goodness (sausage, cinn rolls, jams, etc) , ample portions, great prices, friendly service and the personal attention of the owners, Ben and Jen, who make their presence known. Not to be missed: anything featuring the rockin' cheese sauce (hashbrowns!), the bananas foster pancakes (stupidly good) and the french toast stack (really? that much breakfast fun?). I have been there pretty much every weekend since they have opened, sometimes twice a weekend, and have never been disappointed. Did I mention that you also get friendly, efficient service? It's true. Soooooo, bring your cash (you know, the green paper we used to use as currency) and support people who are trying to bring the best that Chicago breakfast-brunch-lunch dining has to order with none of the attitudes, none of the parking problems and none of the lofty prices of the mothership! read more

I'll give this place 3 stars. I don't quite understand the fascination with this place. Went there for breakfast at 6am, on a weekday. No wait. Clean looking diner. Small strip mall area. I ordered the egg white omelette. All veggies. It was big and pretty good. Lots of veggies. It came with sausage, hashbrowns, and toast. While the omelette was pretty good, the sausage was just nasty. If you come here expecting country sausage forget it. This tastes more like a nasty italian sausage...nothing like any breakfast sausage you've ever had. Two people in my party could not eat the sausage. It nearly gagged them. The hashbrowns were kind of odd. The texture was different than any other hashbrown I've had. The toast was fine. The coffee was very good. My boyfriend and I went in to eat here at 1:40pm we both ordered skillets and 1 order of short stack pancakes we didn't receive our food till 2:40. We waited over an hour and our waitress only approached us once to let us know our food was coming in shortly. This was by far the worst service I have experienced to the point where I didn't even enjoy the food. We were the last ones in the restaurant after they closed. I recommend that if you are coming here to eat show up at least an hour or two before just to make sure you get your food on time also don't order complicated food apparently since it took them so long. This is exactly what Dyer IN needs. Good Ingredients, quick service, and a true alternative to the many chains of sub par food in the area. Its refreshing that a place has opened that puts emphasis on quality food at a very fair price. You can't beat the sandwiches around $8-9 dollars with great fries and a pickle. This place is a must visit! Our breakfast was fabulous! My husband had the Big Daddy Skillet-eggs, hash browns, mushrooms, and shaved rib eye and I had the Blue Wrap-spinach, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, and blue cheese. Delicious! To top it off we shared a homemade cinnamon roll! Fabulous! The food was hot, tasty, and well worth the stop! The service was great, the staff very friendly, and the place clean! You can see the cooks making your meal, tables are close but acoustics good since you can't hear the next tables conversation, and the ambiance pleasant. We will be back! read more

Food is okay. I think it's over hyped because it is one of the first of the little mom and pop half day cafés around the area. The owner is a trained chef and he and his wife own the joint. OK, so I think everyone knows how awesome their breakfast is, especially their limited time Pumpkin Pancakes! But have you ever had one of their burgers? They are amazing! They hand grind their own beef mixture, so its always super fresh. Each burger is pressed into a ring mold for every order, no pre-made patties here. Their brunch burger is the topper though. They make a Mcgriddle-esque bun out of pancake batter, then top the burger with an egg. I hope your're hungry because this thing is HUGE! On top of that, they have the best fries in the area, hands down! So if you're used to going to Scrambled for breakfast, stop in for lunch some time, you won't be disappointed. read more

All the things I've had here have been fabulous. This is my family's favorite place. Heck, my daughter will even go at 8am to avoid the crowd we know will be there shortly. Besides great food, there are many other things that make this cafe special. The servers are great and very friendly. We have Allie waiting on us most times, and we love her. Also, this restaurant is wonderfully flexible. I've made some substitutions that have always made without a problem. The other great thing? They have a drive up window! On days we don't have time to eat in, we order by phone and come pick it up. I am addicted to the hash browns and have to have them on a regular basis. (I'd recommend going to Scrambled Dinerif just for those!). That drive up window comes in mighty handy! read more

A really cute place but I should have chosen breakfast instead of lunch food. The pork in the pork confit sandwich was overcooked and dry, and the seasonings in the pumpkin soup overshadowed the pumpkin flavor. This is one of the better breakfast places in the area, in my opinion, due to the quality of the food and the generous portion sizes. I had the apple butter omelette and it was delicious, as was the homemade jam I had on my toast. Maybe a tad bit pricier than average for a hole in the wall, but you do get a lot of food. The only problem here is the size of the place -- way too tiny for the number of customers they get on a Saturday morning, even by hole in the wall standards. The service was decent for how busy they were, but I hope that someday they can expand or maybe move to a larger location. read more
