Nashville Chicken Sandwich combo with regular fries ($21)
    John D.

Down the Scratch Food truck turned Fountain Alley brick-and-mortar that achieved max popularity during the Pandemic. I kept hearing about their hot chicken sandwiches for years, and we finally made the trek to check them out. The Good: * Friendly service * Prices aren't too bad considering the portion size and flavor. * Outdoor dog-friendly seating * Craft brews in cans * Seven levels of heat for everyone from the spice-averse to the hardcore fire lover. * Chicken sandwiches are massive and delicious. And despite it being a breast, they kept it very juicy. * Really loved their fries; I'm not sure if they make them in-house or if they're frozen, but regardless, they're fantastic. The Meh: * Not much in the way of drinks except for the aforementioned beers and cans of soda. The Ugly: * It's located in DTSJ, so you'll most likely have to pay for parking. If you don't mind walking a few blocks, the 4th St Garage is free for the first 90 min. Conclusion: Great spot to get your spice on.

So this lovely food truck was at the movie night at hellyer on june 27th, I got the chicken tenders with fries. (super good flavor) I think this food truck should be served more in events, the service in here is definitely a must

This place was recommended from a family member. They raved about the sandwiches and brought us for dinner. I was told their food was spicy but I was glad they had non spicy nuggets for my toddler. I got the tofu sandwich with 2 spice level. It was pretty spicy but overall delicious. The tofu was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The fries was so good too. I never seen them cut that way but it gave them a great texture. I would definitely be back to try more items.

Scratch Cookery is one of the many local places hidden in the allies of Downtown San Jose. They are not far from the heart of Downtown, and definitely not far from the university. I stumbled upon this place one day while doing my random walk, so you KNOW I had to give this place a try. I had went in upon opening time, so my wait was a little bit, but I was not complaining because you know what they say: "Greatness comes when you build them up one by one." I got their hamburger with the extra cheese, and curly fries. The patty was extra juicy, and the brioche buns were toasted really well. I especially like how they added on the cheese after the patty was marinated on the grill for quite a while, but not too long to the point all of the juice was sucked up. The only down side to the food: the prices. Be prepared to spend quite a bit on lunch if you decide to go to this place, because they do end up charging quite a bit more than what the regular places around Downtown would. But the IPA beers make up for it, so it's also worth a bang for your buck. Hospitality was pretty top-notch -- my order was taken in an orderly fashion, and they even apologized for the wait as well. I hope Scratch Cookery stays around for a long while so that people can try out such majestic wonders this establishment has to offer! Ambiance was great, and I'd definitely be back again!

The Nashville sandwich was succulent and tender. It's enough to be shared between two people when cut in half. The fried chicken was crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The bread was soft and fresh, the comeback sauce added a creamy tang, and the toppings brought a fresh and crisp texture. One small note is that I received crinkle cut fries, whereas I had previously seen their fries presented in a twister style. The fries were good, but slightly different from what I expected.

The burger here is so juicy! The grilled cheese chicken sandwich was also good but may have needed a bit more sauce. Fries were crispy. Recommended! Will be back for more

Scratch Cookery is a hole-in-the-wall spot in downtown San Jose that caught my attention while I was searching for Nashville-style hot chicken. After living in Atlanta for over 10 years, I'm no stranger to Southern cuisine, and Nashville hot chicken is something I truly missed after moving to California a few months ago. I ordered the GC Nashville Hot Sandwich (Texas Toast) combo, which lets you choose your heat level and comes with fries. The sandwich was huge and very well made--juicy chicken, nicely assembled, and satisfying overall. While it doesn't quite match the iconic flavor of Hattie B's, it's still definitely worth trying if you're craving hot chicken in the Bay Area. The fries were thick-cut, twisted, and crispy, which I really enjoyed. Now for the downsides. The price felt steep--over $18 before tips and taxes for the combo. On top of that, the restaurant is located in an area with no street parking. The only option was paid parking right in front of the restaurant, which ended up costing me $20 for just 15 minutes. That pushed the total experience to $40+ for a chicken sandwich, which is honestly a hard no for me. Overall, the food itself is good and hits the spot flavor-wise, but between the pricing and parking situation, it's not something I'd personally repeat. If you're nearby or don't have to worry about parking, it might be worth a one-time visit--but for me, the overall cost outweighed the experience.

So I decided to stop in here for lunch and was not disappointed! After seeing the reviews I had to check this place out. You walk in and it's a small place where you can see the whole kitchen and the staff. Walked up to the friendly staff member behind the counter. She gave me a few recommendations and I decided to order the spicy chicken sandwich grilled cheese combo. The price was a tad steep, 22$ plus the sauces, taxes and tip it came out to 28$. However after I got my sandwich I quickly understood why. It's huge and was amazing. Every bite tasted so good! Only complaint is the fires were kinda cold. Overall this is a really solid spot! Would recommend it.

I stopped by on a weekday afternoon and picked up a lunch sandwich. Nashville sandwich level 4 was my item. Chicken was flavorful and spicy. In fact it was slightly spicier than I would like. May be next time I should stop at 3.

Hubby and I were craving burgers and had been wanting to try Scratch Cookery for a while, so we decided that on this rainy date night, we'd do it. It's a cozy little spot located in an alley way, with not a whole lot of seating (less when it's rainy and you don't want to sit outside), so we got lucky that it wasn't packed this night. We both ordered the classic cheeseburger with seasoned fries. We managed to snag a couple of seats along the wall counter and waited for about 10 minutes or so for our food. The first impression I had was how delicious looking and smelling the French fries were. They were so uniquely shaped, unlike any fries I'd ever had. The burger looked good, with meat smashed in with grilled onions. I was so enamored by the fries, that I started with that and was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them. Some pieces were cut like super-thick kettle chips, crisp along the edges, soft in the center, with tasty seasoning all around. I didn't need ketchup to enjoy them. After nibbling on a few fries, I eagerly dove into my cheeseburger because really, this was the real reason we came out. When I picked up the burger, I was expecting it to be hotter than it was since it had just come out fresh. I bit into it and while I enjoyed the first bite being a nice blend of soft brioche, classic American cheese, and crisp lettuce, I was really hoping the meat would be warmer than it was. The taste was fine - it didn't blow my mind. I think I was just so hung up on the fact that the burger wasn't hot that it distracted me from any flavor I was meant to enjoy. it was such an opposite experience from that first bite of French fry I had, which I really enjoyed. I would like to come back because as I was sitting there under the menu wall, I was wondering if maybe I would have enjoyed the Nashville hot chicken more. Reading through the different varieties of chicken and spice levels, I found myself thinking about the what ifs instead of the actual food I was eating. Next time.

Came here in the evening, small place tucked around the corner near the VTA drop off point. It's a small place that doesn't have enough lighting in interior where consumer eat. One middle table and the rest are edge stools or outside tables. The food is alright. Chicken is juicy and cooked well, considering how large of a piece they put in the sandwich. Which is kind of a bad thing to me because it ruins the balance of the other toppings inside the sandwich. Seasoned fries were good. Not too dry, still crunchy and soft inside.

Ordered off GrubHub and it came fast with no issues. I got the chicken sandwich with brioche bun spice level 4 and it was good spicy but not too spicy. I liked the pickles and slaw in the sandwich. The tenders came with 4 but they are huge so it's like having 8. It also came with dipping sauce. My husband got the salad with nuggets and he said it was good. Nice that they have a salad option. Overall I would order from here again for delivery as I think parking downtown would be too difficult. It was also on the expensive side but not crazy expensive compared to its competition of Starbird.

The portions are big enough to share one meal between two people. Meals average about $21. The portions are very large and made fresh. This place would be ideal to DoorDash. The food came out very hot. It was delicious but extremely hot to eat. This place is downtown so consider you might have to pay for parking. There is not a lot of seating either. The food took a while to come out because it is made fresh. I would suggest skip the hassle doordash from scratch; I assure you food will arrive hot and fresh and you won't have to deal with parking fees.

    Cute dog outside of scratch.

This place has been on my list for a while now…read more I called for a to-go order on 4/12/26 and got the Kao Gai Sap and fried chicken skins. When I came by, there wasn't really any other patrons there so picking up my food was easy. Inside was very decorative too, it has that mom-and-pop vibe to it. Kao Gai Sap (5/5) - The chicken was soft and juicy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. It came with a chili dipping sauce, and I opted for white rice instead of chicken rice. This has to be by far the BEST chicken I've ever had. The chicken was seasoned to perfection. Cucumber was crisp and refreshing, although I do wish there were a few more slices. Would definitely order this again. Also, this Kao Gai Sap also came with a small portion of soup which was also equally as good! When you order this, make sure to ask for it LAAB STYLE! Crispy chicken skin (5/5) - I mean it's fried chicken skin, but I'm pretty sure they used the same salt/pepper seasoning on this as they did with the Kao Gai Sap, which gave it a nice flavor profile as opposed to being plain. The lemon-pepper dipping sauce was the perfect pairing with the chicken skin. The lemon flavor was there as well as the pepper, but both were very mild and didn't overpower each other. That dipping sauce made a HUGE difference. ALSO GET THIS LAAB STYLE! Will definitely be coming back because I'm hooked now. No one does chicken like Tuk Tuk!

The chicken was a bit dry but overall flavor was good. - Thai Basil : Unfortunately this was not good. Of course a Thai basil dish would have basil in it but the steam was extremely hard, felt like your eating branches. The dish overall was extremely salty, we even added our own rice to try to balance it out but it was still salty. The flavor didn't taste like your traditional Thai basil, I just tasted like salt & pepper. The cucumbers that came with both dishes were weirdly bitter as well. - Lychee Peach Tea : I would've been better off drinking water. The drink was $7 and it tasted like watered down tea with cheap fruit syrup. Overall I don't think I would come back, the prices here are pretty high and for the same value there's better places.

I'm shocked. Like, genuinely shocked. The flavor is AMAZING!!!…read more I've known about this place for the longest time, but it's pretty far from where I live, so I never thought it was worth traveling all the way here just for boneless chicken feet. Today, I was shopping nearby and realized this place had been sitting on my saved list forever, so I finally decided to give it a try. First impression: the service was fantastic! I couldn't decide between the garlic and lemon flavors, so the owner gave me samples of both. I really appreciated that! I ended up liking the lemon flavor more, so that's what I took home. I also love that they specialize in boneless chicken feet. It's one of my favorite dishes back in Vietnam, but I absolutely hate dealing with the bones, so this place solved that problem perfectly (and this is the only place in the Bay that has boneless chicken feet) Their boneless chicken feet are only $13.99 per box. They're fresh, flavorful, and have the perfect crunchy texture. I also got the combo with a lemonade. The chicken feet were incredible, but the lemonade was a little bitter, I think it could be improved. And also, if you follow them on Instagram, you get a free small lemonade, which is a nice bonus! Besides chicken feet, they also serve duck neck, duck tongue, etc. I wasn't in the mood to try them today, but I'll definitely be back next time. Overall, this is a great spot for affordable Chinese snacks. The boneless chicken feet absolutely lived up to the hype, and I'll definitely be coming back!
