I love this area of Newport. You are a few blocks away from the more touristy brick walk area and so slightly few people. There are a bunch of new/trendy spots. We picked Scratch because of their great reviews on yelp and they were also dog friendly so 3 of us and our puppy sat at a sidewalk table and really enjoyed the place. The menu provides you with 2 main options - either grilled cheese or Mac and cheese with a bunch of options to mix with it. They also had wraps, soups/chili. My wife noticed they were also a BYOB location. My daughter got the Patty melt Mac and cheese which she absolutely loved. She wished it had a few more of the tasty caramelized onions but she was very happy with it. I had the hail Cesar with chicken wrap which was tasty -all the ingredients were fresh and well presented. My wife had the Potatoes leek soup. She got a cup which was a coffee mug full not chinncy. It was great. I also ordered a Beef and bean chili. It had some kick to it as the heat built up as you ate it. The bowl was bigger than I expected-too much when paired with the wrap. This was a nice find. read more

It was cold and rainy so heading to Scratch's soup and sandwiches was the right call. They have various mashups for the grilled cheese sandwiches with clever names. I got the Thanksgiving one and it was tasty with large pieces of turkey. I also got a cup of their Tomato Florentine soup which was delicious and surprisingly hearty. Since I ordered the Lunch Box combo it came with Spud Nuggets which are crunchy baked then fried little boxes of potato goodness. The sandwiches are large so I still haven't ate the cookie that came with my lunch but it looks tasty. The service was good and our waitress helped maneuver us through the many options. Place was still open for another 40 minutes when we arrived, with a bunch of activity inside. Went in and waited to get seated. No response from the staff buzzing around. We walked in and thought it was a small, unimpressive place. Then we sat down and looked around a bit: cute decorations, including unique salt & pepper shakers at each table and several posted specials. My soup was on point! Mushroom barley loaded with good stuff and super peppery. My grilled cheese was only a little greasy - but loaded with delicious fillings that stood up to the thick-cut rye. The tuna melt was one of the best my husband had ever tasted. We had the special spuds too - unlike anything we'd ever tasted. It's like mashed potatoes with lots of seasonings, drizzled with shredded cheese then deep fried. Yes please!! Prices were reasonable too. I love what these folks do. It feels like going to over to a friend's house. And your friend is a killer cook with a deep fridge, stocked pantry and a hundred ideas for something great for lunch. It was mid morning this time, coming off a long walk around Newport and getting hungry. The big, friendly guy inside pointed me towards the breakfast board while telling me he'd be happy to make anything on the lunch/dinner menu as well. The chourico, egg & cheese felt right at 10AM so I went for it. Tasty as all get out, it was a wise choice. Or maybe not, since I was hungry enough to not stop eating it. It was massive for a breakfast sandwich - 2 eggs, a bunch of chourico and a ton of cheese between two slices of chewy/crispy, perfectly grilled sourdough. I should have saved half. I hoovered the whole thing down on a bench near the Newport Viking Thing and nearly passed out with little glistening sandwich crumbs on my lips & fingertips. Darn good thing the guy packed extra napkins. I added another mile to my walk home. So worth it. Getting one of Scratch Kitchen's Chili Dogs this afternoon! read more

The menu doesn't have your typical "bacon and eggs," so I probably wouldn't bring my picky ass kids, but there is French toast, if you're looking for something basic. I ordered a "hashtatta" which is a grilled frittata and hash sandwich. It was like $6 and big. I ate half in the restaurant and the other half for lunch the next day. Even reheated, it was SO good. Wow! That's all I can say about this place. Just moved to the area and had time before the move-in inspection so my husband and I decided to try it out. He got the Soup and a Whole Frigging Sandwich while I got the sausage gravy and eggs. My husband went with the split pea soup and the Los Cubanos Locos sandwich. I tried a bit of the soup; it's by far the best split pea soup I've had (and this is coming from a gal who's picking the peas out from Chinese fried rice)! It was so full of flavor without overpowering the simple flavor of peas. I also tried a bit of the sandwich and loved the spicy pork! My sausage gravy and eggs were great. I've had better sausage gravy at home but the gravy from this place was the best I've had eating out. I also enjoyed the fact it was served over English muffins and the perfect runny over easy eggs. We also grabbed one of their homemade cookies to go and just ate...so good! Their Crackerdoodle cookie is amazing; it's a snickerdoodle with toffee. It's almost as big as my face and the texture of the cookie is a perfect soft found in snickerdoodles. Since we'll be living down the street from this place, we'll definitely be back! read more

Food is super affordable and they've got a variety of combo meals. Service was pretty slow for a holiday weekend. I got the humungous fungus. Their grilled cheese sammys are pretty big so they split them up. I'd recommend one sandwich for two people, if you guys aren't crazy hungry. The tomato florentinw soup was okay on its own but really enhanced the grilled cheese's flavor. No booze at all but they've got a large selection of drinks. Overall this place was fine. The most A~M~A~Z~I~N~G~L~Y *delicious* grilled cheese sandwiches you'll ever have! Scratch specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches and soups. There are plenty of other things on the menu (salads, wraps, eggs) but come for the grilled cheese and/or soup. These are not your plain cafeteria grade grilled cheeses. There are over a dozen different kinds - with tomato, smoked bacon, chorico, tuna (= tuna melt), mushrooms, meat loaf, and any kind of cheese you can imagine. You get a choice of plain, rye, sour dough, or marbled bread. It's all grilled to perfection, and your eyes will roll back into your head with the first bite. The soups are rich, hearty, and taste completely homemade. On a recent visit the choices included Portuguese clam chowder (creamy, with chorico and corn), chili, and spinach and mushroom. A bowl of soup would be enough for a meal on its own, but you really do want a grilled cheese too. They make their own cookies, which we haven't had (because we're always too stuffed from grilled cheese and soup), but they look homemade and fabulous. Scratch is worth many repeat visits. This is a dine in, take out, and catering service that looks to specialize in home made soups, salads, wraps, and sandwiches. The wife and I stopped by at 1100 and I was in the mood for lunch and she was in the mood for breakfast. I got the "Soup and Whole Friggin Sandwich" combo for $14 and was stuffed. It came with a Cookie, Drink, Sandwich, and Soup. I had the Ham and Split Pea soup. It came out in a decently sized cup with crackers. It was nice and thick with big cuts of ham and carrots. It was really rich and thick. It was probably the best split pea soup I have ever had in a restaurant. After killing the soup, which made me begin to rethink my strategy of getting a soup and sandwich, I got my sandwich with spud nuggets. The sandwich I got was the Crazy Cuban. It had pulled pork, ham, pickles, mustard, in a marble rye that's toasted. The sandwich was awesome. Everything worked well and this updated new interpretation of a Cuban was a great sandwich. The spud nuggets are like tater tots but home made and super soft in the middle with a nice crisp on the outside. These went well with the Siracha and ketchup I mixed together. After finishing this feast off with a bottle of water, I was hurting. The wife enjoyed her breakfast and I felt like I couldn't move after the sandwich. I highly recommend this place, and next time, I'll go with the half a sandwich and half a cup of soup vice the "Soup and Whole Friggin Sandwich". I took the cookie to go, and the wife and I loved snacking on it a couple hours later. Super crisp on the edges and super soft in the center. read more

I love spinach & artichoke dip and grilled cheese, so this was the best of both worlds. A bit salty though. The combo came with a dessert too! My boyfriend got the Fat Kid, which is grilled cheese made with fried mac and cheese, and it was incredible! He was a little disappointed they didn't have tomato soup, but he quickly got over it during the first bite. The place itself is a little....little, but they do their best to accommodate. There's about 5 tables and 4 seats at the counter. It's a cute little place, and if the weather was nice, we could've sat at the outside seating area too! Overall, great place!! Dang this place is fantastic - I just felt impelled to leave a review! The spud nuggets were absolutely on fire, I had to ask for the recipe. And all for $2! Expert grilled cheese with perfectly grilled bread (make sure to get the sourdough bread); we ordered the chicken parm sandwich and the duck confit sandwich. Yum. Further, this place has an open kitchen that's bigger than the eating space itself, as well as wonderful service with clearly very caring and talented people. Wow! We stopped at scratch while in Newport, RI for a quick trip. We had lunch there one day, having a deluxe traditional, and a humongous Fungus. They were cheesy and rich and had all the right flavors. The vibe was chill and we saw a ton of locals and regulars come and go. We had such a great experience that the next morning after a mediocre eggs benedict experience at another local place we said "shoulda gone to scratch" and decided it was worth it to grab something to go. We had the Zeechy Benedict and it did not disappoint!! It was a breakfast flavor explosion with the best sausage gravy I have ever had!
