Don't judge a book by its cover! While this place looks like an eclectic greasy spoon, don't be fooled. Their food is top notch. Highly recommend the Cubano melt. I believe my wife had the grilled cheese and soup which she liked as well. The spud nuggets were interesting, probably wouldn't order them again but certainly weren't bad, had some interesting spices in them that made them definitely different in a good way. Great food, great service and totally unassuming which made it possible for us to seat a party of 5 immediately outside - not something I thought could happen in Newport in the Summer. Loved my stuffed french toast - was cooked to perfection and the peaches and brie combo was delicious. This is a small hole in the wall with a great menu of standard and modern dishes. The grill cheese frittata - I'm not a breakfast sandwich person but the veggie was absolutely delicious and would get any day of the week! My visit to scratch kitchen was a spur of the moment "let's get brunch" idea with my SIL who was visiting. We walked into this very teeny tiny (hole in the wall) establishment and grabbed menus to look at. While standing there (with another couple waiting behind us) not one staff member acknowledged us. We stood there for more than 5 minutes before a waitress said "I'll be right with you" as she flew by us to her register. At this point the couple behind us left. As we are standing there...waiting (going on 10 minutes now). The other waitress who was visibly frustrated... due to having just been spoken to loudly and rudely by someone who was peeved about getting bacon when she didn't ask for bacon. ... stopped beside the other waitress at the register and looked at me.. (I think to myself ..FINALLY, eye contact!) she asks, "Are you here for a pick up order?" "No, we are eating here and grabbed that table out front" "Okay, well we do table service, so go ahead and sit and we'll come to you." "Okay, great!" So, I go sit out at the table my SIL grabbed (which is understandably still dirty from the last couple). Also, I didn't have my menu because I knew what I wanted and left it back at the front. About another 10 minutes goes by and the initial waitress comes over and starts to clean up but knocks over a glass of water. She is flustered and spits out "oh,no! That's why we wait and seat people ourselves here"... I think.. was that a shot at us? Like the glass being spilled was our fault. ??? My SIL and I had no problem and had not said a word about the spill.. we just backed away to let it drip off the table. No biggie‍. So she runs back inside to grab a cloth and proceeds to clean it up. She was also not very hospitable and did not even try to engage with us. We both said "Thank you so much!" But not a word from her as she walked back inside. About 5 minutes later the other waitress comes out.. sees that I don't have a menu when she gets to our table...does a heel turn and walks away to get me one. When she finally returns.. we decide that we have to leave due to my SIL's flight leaving in the next couple of hours. We were so bummed to have to leave because the food looks amazing! It was not very busy.. there are only about 5-6 tables to sit at.. that is NOT a lot of people.. even if the booths were filled up (which they weren't. I'm not sure what was going on today. But I will definitely order for pick up if I ever decide to try Scratch again. read more

Shocked .... Surprised ...and absolutely delighted by this little sandwich shop. Per the previous reviews - we knew that this little place had few seats... and we were blessed by the grilled cheese gods that we got a small booth in a corner nook. Not one but two waitresses attended to us right away and delivered tall hot coffees that warmed our tummies. The menu was a bit overwhelming as the options spilled over on 5 pages of delicious sandwich options. Brunch was on my mind - and the first page provided me with the question of how an egg frittata would taste in a grilled cheese. Feeling adventurous I opted for the veggie frittata sandwich and requested the curiously named "spud nuggets". My partner in crime decided on a short rib grilled cheese on rye - that was highly recommended. There simply is no fuss about this place but the quirky decor and mismatched coffee mugs enchanted us. The sandwiches came out quickly and the first bite was Devine! Who knew that an egg omelet wrapped in a warm grilled cheese would be as delicious as what I was tasting - but yet - bite after bite - I was amazed at why I hadn't tried this combo before. The sandwich on my partners plate was magical in that it lasted all of 2.5 seconds and vanished. The report I received was that the meat and cheese flavor combo was very well blended. However we need to discuss the "spud nuggets" - these crispy square potato cubes were very curious indeed - however upon biting into one - I will forever hold the classic "tator tots"in contempt. These elevated potato concoctions were absolutely addicting whith a mystery mixture of herbs and crispy skin that crunched with every bite. They even serve them poutine style !!! I have gone with a party of 9 during off hours (in November) and were able to fit, but 3-4 people max is probably about all you'd want to bring to eat in on busy, summer-time hours. Please stay away. I regret leaving this review because I love this place and I don't want you to go, they only have 6 tables in winter and I need one. The soups have never disappointed, all the sandwiches are over the top and the staff is phenomenal. The chicken and waffles would have Aunt Bea & Andy Taylor slapping their knees & extolling its virtues. And please don't get me started on the cookies. But, if it were possible to create the perfect treat that could enhance and not overpower these rapturous wraps and paradisiacal paninis, Scratch would hold the key to that recipe. A real mom & pop type shop. It's small on the inside with only a handful of tables and their breakfast menu is not the biggest, but none of that seemed to matter when my food was brought out to the table. They had a few different options of frittata grilled cheeses and other items on the breakfast menu (French toast, etc...) I ordered their southwestern frittata grilled cheese on sourdough bread. WOWOWOWOW!!! Besides the fact that this is something you'll never find in your diet plan, it was one of the most amazing breakfast items I've eaten in a while! The bread was super crispy, flakey, and buttery...with the frittata inside just gooping with cheese on top of cheese....and the flavors of the corn, black beans, and salsa just mixed together too well. They also offer a lunch combos. I personally think I just ordered wrong for myself. I had the hot ahi tuna wrap. I was not expecting the tuna to be all the way cooked. I also had a ceasar salad, but the lettuce did not taste washed. My sister and daughter both ordered the pumpkin corn chowder and that was delicious. We ordered cookies, but they were burnt. But I would have enjoyed some cole slaw with it to offset the fattiness of the duck and the cheese. The reuben was good. Cole slaw is not heavy on mayonnaise. It provides some tartiness that compliments the sandwich perfectly. The meat had great flavor but slight chewy. These aren't your typical grilled cheeses, these things are glorious and golden and one of the best grilled cheeses I have ever had. There is something about American Cheese that I honestly can't get enough of. I love it so much and to combine that oooooeyyyyy goeyyyy cheeseness with a pile of shaved steak and griddle it until it's perfectly golden... PERFECTION! I got a half sandwich and cup of soup. The Steak & American and a cup of the Portuguese kale soup. The soup was served in a coffee mug, piping hot, which was the way I love to eat my soup when I am home and man oh man was it flavorful. For $15 I got a cup of soup, a whole sandwich, potato nuggets, and a cookie to go home with... Oh, and a drink too! This might be the best deal in town! For the soup I end up getting the Portuguese kale soup which was honestly perfect. In a lot of places the broth is just water and you don't get much flavor but this thing was jampacked with every bit of flavor I could possibly imagine. The portion was also incredibly generous in a whole coffee mug. My sandwich had more meat than I would've suspected which was a delight. My stomach was definitely bigger than my eyes as I had to take half a sandwich home with me and I toasted it up the next day and it was just as good This place is absolutely perfect for a casual breakfast or lunch especially if you're feeling a little adventurous to try new flavors. He had a choice of bread, mine came on an English muffin. Fast turnaround order, about 10-15 mins max. The burger was 1/4 lb, had hard fried egg, American cheese and bacon. Juicy and good, very filling. My husbands sandwich had ample amounts of sausage and bacon. I tried the sausage, had good flavor, a bit of spice. We also got a side spuds. These were a bit curious.
