Spud nuggets, Duck Confit grilled cheese, Portuguese kale soup
    Cece L.

I had a Portuguese Kale soup in a mug which was not only delicious and light, but a nice-sized serving to pair with my sandwich. I got the duck confit grilled cheese which was so unique and fun to eat. The spud nuggets were new to me and came with a generous portion. What a lovely spot! I tried my friend's chili which was a bit on the saltier side, so it may depend on the soups of the day what your experience is.

If you are a fan of various takes on tasty grilled cheese look no further. Both our grilled cheese sandwiches were top notch! Staff were extremely warm and friendly. Dining room is a quaint atmosphere that is a frequent for local patrons. Will absolutely be coming back here!

I absolutely love this spot. There is nowhere else in the state (Never mind Newport) where I can get full and love every bite for only $17. Went here with some family including my niece. The waitstaff was attentive and very kind, they provided us with spillproof water cup for the little one and even gave us a freeze pop for her (which she loved). Onto the food, $17 for a cup of soup, a full grilled cheese, a side of spud nuggets (like a hearty cross between tater tots and hashbrowns), and a dessert cookie if choice. Soup and dessert options rotate. The sandwich I got was a new one for me, I believe it was called Pollo Picante, or Vibrante? Either way, it lit up my taste buds. The flavors were spot on. Juicy and mildly spiced strips of grilled chicken, fried avocado, monterary jack cheese and I believe fresh pico de galo. I usually go for their beef based grilled cheeses but this was a nice change of pace. The soup was a chilled spicy vegetable gazpacho, it was medium spice in my opinion, not aggressive but built after several bites. Very refreshing and good flavor. Kind of tasted like a kicked up fire roasted tomato and pepper soup with some fresh chunks of vegetables and corn added in. Your mileage will vary with the spudnuggets. I find them to be a little on the dry side but they are quite filling and do have decent flavor. Will absolutely leave you feeling satisfied. Lastly the dessert cookie I went for was the peanut butter cookie. I failed to get a picture but these were huge. Like, 6 inch diameter huge. I think next time I'd go for the oatmeal, but I sure didn't complain while eating it up. I mean, come on, you basically get a free dessert. Honorable mention, my wife's meatloaf grilled cheese was amazing. Maybe better than the one I chose, but I was in the mood for something "lighter" after the 4th of July festivities. Highly, highly recommend this place. The shop is small, but the food and flavors are mighty. If it's a nice day, you can always sit at some of the outside tables. Otherwise there are a few tables inside. If you go for lunch you'll likely be able to get one but if not there are plenty of little areas to walk over to in no time.

My friends and I were in Newport for the day and randomly decided to stop here for lunch. I'm not usually one for sandwich shops, but this place was legit. They do counter service, but it's a bit elevated compared to a sandwich chain. The restaurant is pretty small, but they have some tables indoors and a few outside as well. You could also take your food to go and walk around the area, which is really nice. They have a ton of sandwich and salad options, so there's something for everyone. I got the Turkey Day wrap, which was absolutely delicious. The real star of the show was the apple-sausage-cornbread house stuffing... I can still taste it now when I think of it. For the Newport area especially, this is a solid casual place with fair prices. I would definitely recommend!

    Sup Shorty? grilled cheese

My partner and I got The Lorraine grilled cheese frittata, Sup Shorty? grilled cheese, and a cup of chilled watermelon peach basil soup - TASTE: 4/5 - grilled cheeses are such comfort food! The soup was awesome too w a great balance of sweet watermelon and basil TEXTURE: 5/5 - we were nostalgically obsessed w the perfectly toasted sourdough bread lol. Both sandwiches had impressive cheese pulls, and my egg frittata layer was so fluffy and light PRICE: 4/5 - total came to $33 SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - good lunch/brunch portions SERVICE: 4/5 - we walked in at 12:30pm on a Monday (Labor Day weekend holiday off) and indoor and outdoor seats were all taken, so we were fine w a 25min wait for a table. Walked a loop from Broadway to Washington Square to kill time, and our table was almost ready by the time we came back. The staff was super friendly, and our food came out quick ATMOSPHERE: 3/5 - small space (w 10-15 seats inside) and cozy diner vibes w handwritten menus on the walls, though no bathrooms PARKING: 4/5 - got a free street spot on Broadway a block away

French dip 12.00 well worth it.

Great lunch in a tiny breakfast/ lunch spot on Broadway. French dip was great. My wife had a patty melt that was perfectly cooked as well.

Small dining area with only a few tables, luckly there was a two top table available when we arrived so we opted to dine in rather than take out. They have a very large, and frankly a bit overwhelming menu. We came for lunch and ordered "Sup, Shorty?" which had braised short ribs and the "Scratch Reuben" which you guessed it, a reuben with slaw. The food was hot, the bread crispy, and the cheese pulls were big. The food was tasty, we felt the Sup, Shorty was missing something, and I liked how it tasted a day later, the bread was softer and easier to eat. The meats on both sandwiches were tender. We had our eyes on a few other menu items we would like to try next time we are in the area.

    Curried Pumpkin Bisque
    Shumrith V.

Great soup and grilled cheese! Scratch Kitchen has rotating soup flavors- today I got a cup of the Curried Pumpkin Bisque. I like that the soup was a little thick and was also very warm. There was a hint of spicyness and also some sweetness from the pumpkin and was perfect for called Newport Sunday' It came in a cute mug, too! The Plain Grilled Sandwich was grilled to perfection. The sandwich really paired well with the Tabasco sriracha they had on the tables. The spud nuggets were also good, a new form factor for potatoes that I haven't had before. Overall, 4.5/5 for fresh, warm food and fast service!

Wonderful local establishment with homemade soups and sandwiches! I've had their catering and also been to their location in Newport. My first experience trying Scratch was catering for a local baby shower. Everything was phenomenal. The baked French toast casserole and quiches were the hit of the party. Most recently, visiting the restaurant downtown, we had 3 sandwiches. The location is very VERY tiny, so I recommend making reservations (via phone) or being prepared to wait. It is a bit of a hole in the wall type of place. We had the tuna melt on sourdough, tuna melt on a gluten free wrap, and a "Bangkok in a sock" on gluten free wrap - all pictured. Everything was hot and fresh!

Charming and quaint hole in the wall for breakfast in Newps. The service was great everything explained and we were made to feel welcomed. Grilled cheese frittatas (Lorraine) was the best thing we ate. I dare say any of the grilled cheese frittatas would be good. Both French toasts were dry. Very disappointing was the lack of real maple syrup. How do you boast from scratch and serve onto Jemima's corn syrup? That was disappointing! Lots of oregano in all the dishes especially the potato cubes which were good and different. I would go again for the grilled cheese frittata!

AMAZING! As the name implies, everything here is from scratch. We came in on a Saturday morning, expecting a huge crowd and planning to get takeout, but we were pleasantly surprised when there were only two other people inside, so we dined in. We both got Benedict's that were absolutely delish. I got the Irish Benedict and was pleasantly surprised with homemade corned beef hash and what looked like a homemade (or at least specialty) English muffin. The eggs were huge and serviced with a generous portion of hollandaise. The spud nuggets were unique yet delicious. Basically a cube of hash browns. Service was also fantastic and reasonable prices. Definitely give this one a try!

Fat Kid - Fried Mac n Cheese Sandwich
    Diann B.

When planning our day, off of our cruise ship in Newport, we knew we wanted to go to Scratch. Hubby & I saw an episode of Man vs. Food. It featured Scratch. Casey Webb, the host, ate the deep fried Mac n' Cheese sandwich known as Fat Kid. Hubby tried it & I ate the French Dip. We sat outside which was brisk yet lovely. The day was Sunday, October 23rd, 2022. We liked our food. I liked my French Dip better than the bite I had of the Fat Kid. Fat Kid: Deep fried mac & cheese slammed between two pieces of buttery bread with melted provolone. Topped with house-made tomato bacon jam. $9 (better with bacon or ham, just $3 extra) The Fat Kid needed a dipping sauce to be honest. The mac and cheese lost a lot of its creaminess by being fried. Hubby only ate 1/2 of this sandwich. I thought that the staff was very friendly. The lady that worked there pointed out a couple of regulars who were on the show. They were older and smiled and waved. I thought that that was darn cute. A foodie walking tour stopped at Scratch. Scratch makes homemade soups. We chatted up 2 couples from the walking tour. They said the soups were delicious. They also said how much they loved the walking food tour of Newport. Note to self-- I want to do this. They were surprised that their foodie guide did not tell them that Scratch was featured on Man vs. Food. All in all - I am very glad that I went to Scratch.

It's a small, cozy spot with just a few tables and countertop seating, plus a couple of outdoor tables that are dog-friendly. The truffle mac & cheese may be one of the best vegan mac & cheeses I've had in a really long time. So creamy, rich, and absolutely delicious. The cauliflower bites were another favorite--fresh, crunchy little nuggets tossed perfectly in honey mustard. I originally thought the sauce would come on the side for dipping, but I actually loved that they were coated so evenly. So good! Hubby had the Rubenesque sandwich, and everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. There was also a steady stream of people picking up online orders and grabbing food to go, which definitely made us feel like this is a local favorite. I'd definitely recommend grabbing a meal here, or taking it to go for a beach picnic or to enjoy at one of Newport's scenic spots. And if you're looking for coffee and heading out of Newport, seriously recommend Simple Merchant House. Casual relaxed atmosphere here with some music jamming in the background. Window bar seating if you are on your own or tables for four if meeting for a quick lunch bite. Started with a small chili which was fresh and full of flavor. For the main went with the Tuesday special with the recommended fish tacos (hearts of palm layered with nori flakes, crisp grated carrot, and shredded purple cabbage and a sliced jalapeño. Crispy tortilla with side of beans and rice). You can add a fresh pico and guac for additional prices, had both and were delicious! Assortment of drinks in the fridge along with some premade items (staff said it is rotational items and prepped earlier in the week if you want to max your options). Every table and bar seat was packed so I highly recommend having a reservation or be prepared to wait a bit. The Romaine & Kale Caesar Salad with Chicken Milanese was genuinely tremendous. Such an elite combination from the freshness & creaminess of the salad to the crispiness and saltiness of the Chicken Milanese. Since we were sharing, they pre-split the portion for us which was a nice hassle-free experience. I could've honestly ended the meal here and been super content. I rarely see oven roasted pizza on the menu so we decided to try the Oven Roasted Chicken Grilled Pizza. The best part was actually the dough; it's thin enough where the roasted/grilled flavor comes through. The pesto and arugula were both good and paired well with the grilled chicken. The Tagliatelle was savory, earthy, and not overly creamy. The pasta itself was cooked just right. Since we were celebrating a birthday, I was so grateful that they offered us a complimentary slice of Limoncello Mascarpone Cake. It was so good! Moist, creamy, and not too sweet or citrusy. It was a pleasant bite to end the meal on. Great spot!
