I haven't had a soup sandwich combo in foreverrr so this really satisified a craving i didn't even know i had. Most of us did the soup sandwich combo and my boyfriend tried the frittata sandwich. We had the chili soup or potato leeks. I love potato leek it was so nice and creamy so I was not disappointed here. It's so funny/cute they literally put it in a cup too. My boyfriend got a bowl and that thing was pretty damn big. We ordered the Sup Shorty (short rib), grilled cheese frittata, philly cheesesteak, and meatloaf sandwiches. Honestly all of them were pretty damn good but i loved the short rib and meatloaf the best. I am not a huge fan of philly cheesesteak in general though. My only complaints were the wait but this place only had outdoor seating and i know why so many people were waiting and the tater tots idk what herbs they use but i didn't like them much. The food really saved this place because the service was so extremely slow. They made every sandwich one by one (which is great to a fault because it is fresh). Every table was served one by one at least 15 minutes apart (only 3 tables sitting) and we waited 35 minutes for just 2 sandwiches and max and cheese. If you have the time to order and wait then this place is great but definitely not ideal for wanting a quick meal. Our sandwiches were great though! What the heck was this experience even? Have not had such a bad experience with pretty much every aspect of a restaurant in a very long time. Was simply trying to have a good lunch. First warning sign was a rude waitress. Looked and acted like she didn't want to be there, like we were an inconvenience. Next red flag was the slowness of our food coming out. The cherry on top: Every item we ordered was dry and overtly salty. Nothing tasted memorable. We couldn't finish our meal. Final thing: It was a hot day, and even then, there was barely any sort of ventilation at all. When we stepped outside the restaurant, the outside air was cooler than it was inside. I get that not all businesses can afford air conditioning, some buildings are older, etc. But nothing for customer comfort. We stopped by here on New year's day for breakfast and were pleased to find out that they were open. I had this place booked marked for about a year, and we finally made it here and were really happy with the result of making this our first dining experience of 2020. When we arrived I wasn't sure they were open. The chef and the front server were both outside, she was cleaning windows and he was smoking which was a little off-putting but they both hurried inside when they realized we were there for breakfast. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time and we had a pick of the seating for where we wanted to eat breakfast. The menu here is extensive. I was really impressed with how many options they had including allowing something to be made as a grilled cheese or as a mac and cheese, plentiful Benedicts, omelets and scrambles, french toast, and a slew of other breakfast items that aren't traditional. I got a hot herbal tea $1.75 and he got a cup of coffee, also $1.75 while we decided on entrees. For breakfast, he picked the Zeechy Benny ($13), which he declared was the perfect breakfast for him, and I ordered the party dip grilled cheese on sourdough ($8). On the side, I also ordered some pickle fries ($5). Hubby raved about his breakfast, but not as much as I raved about the pickle fries which were one of the best nosh items I've had in recent history. I would return just to eat a full order of these amazing and delicious zesty bites. Each item felt like they were made with care and attention, and each menu item felt like it was unique to this restaurant. I was impressed with how many unusual items they had on their menu, and the way that they presented things in a different manner then most are used to. The only thing that I found as a downside was the ambiance where we were sitting, with pretty blaring direct sunlight and nowhere to escape from it. I guess as a small side note also it was difficult to find any healthy options on the breakfast menu for those looking for "New year, new you" stuff. I'm definitely going to put this back on my list to try again, as there were other things that I didn't have space or time to try. No matter what though, I'm definitely ordering those pickle fries again, and I can't wait to eat them! Prices are decent, service is fast and friendly, there's plentiful street parking downtown if you can find it, and they have imaginative dishes with a playful and unique twist on the otherwise usual. This was a true find for lunch in Newport! A real treat for the taste buds at Scratch Kitchen. I loved the lunch combo that allowed me to get a cup of Mushroom bisque soup and deluxe traditional grilled cheese sandwich with spud nuggets and ending with my choice of a cookie. Chunky artichoke dip smothered in cheese, garlic aioli and fried spinach between 2 slices of buttery, expertly toasted sour dough was heaven. My fiancé said his sandwich was delicious as well. Incredibly friendly staff with great service. I ordered takeout and when I stopped by the store I picked up my cookie and soda from the lady at the register. Food wasn't quite done and she happily brought it out to my car. The cookie was also great. They have a wide variety but I wanted to see what their chocolate chip cookie was about and I was not disappointed. Lots of chocolate and the cookie itself wasn't so heavy that I didn't want to eat it. I got the fat boy with split pea soup and I was very full after. The fat boy was delicious and next time I go I think I might just get the Mac and cheese by itself. Deceiving because there were only two customer when we entered but other restaurants were slammed. This restaurant has been in my Yelp collection so I wanted to try it. It did not disappoint. At all. I ordered the tuba melt. I am a bit of a tuna melt snob. I would say it's one of the best tuna melts I've had. You get your choice of bread. I chose multigrain. It was buttered and grilled to perfection. The tuna had dill in it. Nice touch. The Gruyere cheese was the perfect compliment. The dill made me question if it was the bread or tuna it was so good! My son had the patty melt which I sampled for the sake of this review! Yummy crispy bacon and a burger seasoned and cooked to perfection. I LOVE SCRATCH! I go here almost on the daily for their soups! I know, I'm weird and have never had a grilled cheese from here, but I can't wait to get one soon, and update the review when I do! As for the soup, they have a carousel of changing flavors daily - everything from chilis to lentil mushroom, to gazpacho in the summertime. My favorites are either the Bolognese Soup, which combines tender ground beef in a savory tomato sauce with orzo pasta - just like eating a bowl of Bolognese pasta on a cold day - or the Watermelon Peach Gazpacho, a cold yogurt based soup specialty that's made during the summer, and showcases fruity flavors punctuated with loads of fresh basil. Refreshing and filling! Service is super prompt and friendly, and once you go in a few times, they'll remember your order and treat you like one of the family. Stef, the owner, is great, and really seems to care about the people who come to her restaurant. She'll always give you a recommendation if you get overwhelmed by the dizzying array of amazing choices! I was super excited about trying this place. I ordered the thanksgiving sandwich which included turkey, cranberry, a stuffing that incorporated sausage in it and gruyere cheese as the base. I'm not a cheese connoisseur but do you eat the rind of gruyere cheese? It was jam-packed in my sandwich and turned me off completely, making it so I could not continue eating my sandwich. The sausage in the stuffing was very soggy and did not compliment any of the other elements on the sandwich either. It was a wash for me. A big fat $10 wash. Thankfully the sandwiches are on the bigger side so my mom had a bit of her Reuben sandwich left for me to try and it was delicious. The corned beef was so tender. After reading many reviews on yelp, I had to go! I was extremely impressed with the menu and had a very difficult time choosing from all of the creative breakfast and lunch choices for breakfast. Yes, they also serve lunch as part of the breakfast menu! After much debate, I choose the Porky Breakfast Burrito. It was very good and very filling. Well balanced and a decent sized portion. The bbq sauce on the pulled pork could be better, but it was your regular ketchup-based bbq sauce that most people would not mind. Not that it over-powered the burrito at all. I ordered a cup of chili as well and that was a 5 out of 5. The flavors and texture were perfect. The spice was also good, not too hot for the majority of the people who cannot or do not handle the spice. My wife got the breakfast pasta with egg, ham, and cheese. There was a maple-sriracha glaze over the dish. A little weird, but overall I would give it a 3 out of 5. I would suggest an over easy egg over the pasta to give an added yolk favor. My visit to scratch kitchen was a spur of the moment "let's get brunch" idea with my SIL who was visiting. We walked into this very teeny tiny (hole in the wall) establishment and grabbed menus to look at. While standing there (with another couple waiting behind us) not one staff member acknowledged us. We stood there for more than 5 minutes before a waitress said "I'll be right with you" as she flew by us to her register. At this point the couple behind us left. As we are standing there...waiting (going on 10 minutes now). The other waitress who was visibly frustrated... due to having just been spoken to loudly and rudely by someone who was peeved about getting bacon when she didn't ask for bacon. ... stopped beside the other waitress at the register and looked at me.. (I think to myself ..FINALLY, eye contact!) she asks, "Are you here for a pick up order?" "No, we are eating here and grabbed that table out front" "Okay, well we do table service, so go ahead and sit and we'll come to you." "Okay, great!" So, I go sit out at the table my SIL grabbed (which is understandably still dirty from the last couple). Also, I didn't have my menu because I knew what I wanted and left it back at the front. About another 10 minutes goes by and the initial waitress comes over and starts to clean up but knocks over a glass of water. She is flustered and spits out "oh,no! That's why we wait and seat people ourselves here"... I think.. was that a shot at us? Like the glass being spilled was our fault. ??? My SIL and I had no problem and had not said a word about the spill.. we just backed away to let it drip off the table. No biggie‍. So she runs back inside to grab a cloth and proceeds to clean it up. She was also not very hospitable and did not even try to engage with us. We both said "Thank you so much!" But not a word from her as she walked back inside. About 5 minutes later the other waitress comes out.. sees that I don't have a menu when she gets to our table...does a heel turn and walks away to get me one. When she finally returns.. we decide that we have to leave due to my SIL's flight leaving in the next couple of hours. We were so bummed to have to leave because the food looks amazing! It was not very busy.. there are only about 5-6 tables to sit at.. that is NOT a lot of people.. even if the booths were filled up (which they weren't. I'm not sure what was going on today. Scratch dished out one of the most solid breakfasts I have had in a long time. The place doesn't look like much when you walk by--think: unpretentious, cozy, hole-in-the-wall diner. This down-to-earth kind of vibe is rare in Newport of all places, and it lent itself well to warmly welcoming in the new year. First off, we had NO WAIT on New Year's Day! I thought that was unheard of, but boy, we we were lucky that we hit it right because after grabbing a table for 4, the place filled right up. One waitress was running the whole restaurant and she killed it--she was good-humored, fast, and always checked in with us and all her tables to see if we had everything we needed. The flavors here are fantastic. You'd be correct if you guessed they're cooking just about everything from scratch. The cauliflower parsnip bisque was divine and the soups change up every day so you have plenty of choices. The southwestern grilled cheese frittata on multigrain is the way to go. The sandwich is HUGE and packed with goodness. How many breakfast places offer you manchego cheese on a sandwich?? (Now, that being said, why can't more places follow Scratch's example!?) Here's the most important piece of advice for you when going here...**do not skip out on getting a side of spud nuggets!!! ** They're mini bricks of hashbrowns that are fried golden brown and heavenly. I'm thinking there may be some garlic and rosemary in there heavenly hashbrowns, but I can't confirm. Whatever you do, make sure to get these!! read more
