This is the second time we attempted to dine here. The first time, we actually had a reservation and were still placed in the back, by ourselves, next to the bussing station in an almost empty restaurant. My husband demanded we get a table in the front, and finally after some hemming and hawing, we were given a table. The food was really nice but we felt that we were terribly inconveniencing the staff. Regardless, today, New Years Day, we decided to take my parents to Scratchboard. We walked in with no reservation and the back was empty, with an empty 4 top in the front and two empty 2 tops. We were told that there was no room, due to reservations. This place is amazing! The food is beyond delicious and the staff are so nice. We ordered the everyday classic breakfast which was perfectly prepared! Mostly this review should be for the manager. I made reservations for 4, days ahead and we were seated at some silly bar stool style long table. This was Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Difficult to converse with the people seated across from you without yelling. Seated under some type of vent blowing on my head ,close to the kitchen. I ordered the grilled cheese, less truffle, still charged full price. $16 dollars for a grilled cheese, no pickle or anything. When I complained about it, I got a nice smile. Sister ordered the eggs from hell, or whatever, and complained to us and the waiter, hostess or owner who visited our table, that is was comparable to an appetizer soup. No detectable spice to it. Looked exactly like something from Hell. That was greeted with a knowing apologetic smile. No offer to make things right. Why it took so long to be served is a mystery. Makes me think, if your order is not right, that's your problem. Long story short, I would not recommend this place . Just thought we would try a new place. Grade C food and lousy service. Waiting games... This place needs help and good management. Food ok, the wait for table and over hour wait for food ridiculous. It's breakfast. If you can't handle the tables you have, don't accept anyone until you can. It's rude and greedy to run a restaurant this way. Maybe go talk to well run restaurants like Wildberry, Lou Michelles get some tips how to serve good food at a reasonable time so people want to come back and share good reviews. The food and ambiance is great, however I sense the staff comes across as rather entitled or rude. I'm not sure where that comes from. Looking forward to going there for breakfast today and was very disappointed with their check in system. It was a party of 3. We were told it would be 30 minute wait. Standing off to the side just watching people checking in and getting seated. After 45 minutes we go check to see where we are on the wait list we are told we are next. We wait another 10 minutes and get a text that our table is ready. We go check in and they want to sit us INSIDE! We wait all that time to sit inside. We just walked away. Peach cobbler pancakes were a huge, belly filling meal of deliciousness. While the Short rib hash was very tasty, the portion size was pretty small for $17... Visited here for lunch and so far I'm not getting the hype. My partner and I both had the apple and prosciutto grilled cheese with tomato soup. The sandwich was incredibly salty...so much prosciutto and dijon you couldn't taste the cheese. We literally struggled to eat it, eventually taking it apart so that we could have something to eat. The tomato soup was ordinary. I will say that the bread was fantastic. The service was OK; there was some mixup over who had our table...seems to have put both of them in a bad mood. Went to this place in the middle of COVID-19. They were super awesome. Our waiter recommended the chicken biscuit sandwich. It was awesome. Get it. Wife had fancy oatmeal... she loved it. We had dinner on Saturday August 3rd. We both ordered the trout which came very salty and overcooked we mentioned it to the server that it was salty but nothing became of it. If you want a good breakfast and some good coffee, this is not the place to be at. I'm a veteran when it comes to breakfast food. Have tried all the good breakfast joints in Chicago. I am also acutely aware of the challenges in the service industry post covid. Not enough staff, and general frustrations. It could have been what we ordered. I will say the gluten free banana bread loaf was easily the best thing we ate. Our server was fantastic. Personable, engaging, and around just enough. Where we ran into a bit of a hiccup was checking in. I'll admit, on a sunny Saturday morning there's no reason this place shouldn't be hoppin. Perhaps what happened when we arrived was my fault, but I feel like there were better ways to deal with our situation (ones that didn't put a sour taste in my mouth through brunch). I made 10:15am reservations through their site for 2, and just as I was leaving a third wanted to join. Me, thinking this should be an easy accommodation, welcomed the 3rd to our party. When we checked in the hostess seemed annoyed immediately. Basically we had to forfit the reservation completely without her being straight with us. If a 3rd person was that much of an issue let the guest know, we would've easily understood and gone elsewhere. Instead we waited a half hour, and even then were only sat when one of us prompted with a question of how much longer we needed to wait. Once again we were treated like a third person was a total imposition and even talked down to at that point. Just didn't seem super professional. Cute brunch restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. But the indoor dining room is very loud and it's hard to have a conversation. We ordered the Turkish Eggs, Biscuits and Gravy, Crispy Potatoes, and the Anson Mills Grits. The Turkish egg dish was very good, the yogurt sauce went well with the eggs. The potatoes were well cooked and came with a spicy mayo sauce but were otherwise not seasoned. The biscuits and gravy were very salty and the sausage gravy didn't have much flavor or sausage.
