I had a wonderful experience with Nicole at Scream today! I'm absolutely thrilled with how my hair turned out. Ever since my trusted hairstylist friend moved away a few years ago, I was worried about finding someone who knew how to bleach my hair without frying it, but Nicole was amazing! She understood how to make fine/curly hair look the absolute best, and I swear my hair is even softer and nicer than it was when I went in. After reclaiming my hair back from 10+ inches of regrowth, I feel like Nicole gave me myself back again. Sarah was absolutely amazing. I haven't been to a stylist since pre-COVID and usually cut my hair at home, but I was getting to a point where my thick and wavy hair was a battle to brush in the shower. I was half-tempted to chop it all off myself but wanted to keep the length. Long story short, Sarah totally revived my hair and thinned it out so my curls could do their thing. It was a great experience and I left loving my hair again. And I can't express enough how much I appreciate being able to go to a queer salon too. I recently moved to Capitol Hill and was in dire need of a haircut. I decided on this location because it felt like a laidback place that would be able to meet what I was looking for easily (and they also had a really cool vibe). Jodi has cut my hair twice now and I've walked out overly satisfied with the look and get countless compliments. She always understood what I was trying to go for and made the process easy and quick. When your 8 year old with naturally black hair begs you for 365 days straight to have the tips of her hair turned blue you eventually get worn down and agree to it. Scream and specifically Sage saved the day. We had a wonderful experience and I don't know how they got my daughter to sit still for 3 hours but the color looks amazing and the experience was even better. Sage was so accommodating by letting me sit with my daughter during the process and walking us through all the ways to protect the color and her natural hair once the the process was completed. Had a less than great experience with Silver. They did a good job on my hair overall, but I felt a bit pressured into the color selection. I know that some things are just not possible when doing color correction, but I honestly didn't feel like I had much of a choice. They were not very talkative and felt a little standoffish. I spent the long appointment basically looking at myself in the mirror. There was dye on my ears and face I asked to have removed before I left, but that never happened by the end of my appointment. The purple bled on EVERYTHING. I'm used to a bit of bleeding at the start but it bled after a month as well. My shower water was dark purple until I had it removed. I've now had two professional liftings from another stylist where there's still staining. I've never had this issue with a professional dye before, so it came as a bit of a shock. Overall, I didn't hate hair how my hair came out. It honestly looked cool but it was way too much trouble to maintain and change. I wish I had a better experience because this place is really cool, but I just can not go back. read more

If she sees one thing she doesn't like, she won't stop until it's up to her standards. Her passion for her craft and customers makes her one of the best. Nikki, the owner, runs a great shop with a fun, unstuffy vibe. She takes care of her staff and customers and has cut my hair many times when Jade isn't available. I chose to come to this salon because I felt I never quite fit in with other salons and I thought they could do a great bleach job. So I decided to go to scream. Their whole thing was 'Proudly serving all ages and styles, Punks to PTA mom's and everything in between since 1999.' quoted from their website. I would consider myself in between PTA mom and punk. Like very In between. I didn't feel welcomed here like their mission statement said. At one point while a stylist was getting their head shaved by another stylist they said 'I look to much like normie'. Which I could only assume is someone with more 'normal' hair. I literally have nothing against a head shave at all. So while their mission statement says they are all inclusive it's only inclusive to a certain type of client. read more

You get what you pay for, I went for just a haircut and I got a haircut. I didn't love it but my hairdresser already dried my hair before asking if it was good. I thought it might look better a few days later when my hair went back to normal but it looks worse. I felt awkward in the salon and all attempts at conversation with the hair stylist were promptly shut down so they could chat with their coworkers. The first time I came into the salon, I asked for a jellyfish cut and Sage did an amazing job! The second time I went in, I wanted a trim and the stylist who did it, Jade, kept asking me "Does this look even to you?" like girl YOU'RE the professional. They ushered me quickly out while my hair was still damp and only when it dried did I see how uneven, choppy, and straight up ugly the haircut was. Hate how they let me leave the salon with wet hair. When I called to get it fixed, they told me they'd schedule me to get it fixed for some time this week. I never got a call back, never got an appointment to amend the atrocity that was this haircut. Ended up having to cut off the obviously longer than the rest of it pieces of hair by myself. Have gotten numerous comments from friends and family this week asking if I cut my hair myself because it looks so uneven. I am thankful this salon exists. Walking in I felt confident the stylists would cut my hair well and not judge me for having hot pink hair! I came here looking for a stylist that could give me the pixie cut suited for me. I had an idea in mind but I wanted the stylist to not just duplicate the image but to make it work for me. Jade listened and because she gave me what I wanted I left the salon feeling confident. Secondly my husband came along to get his hair cut. He wears his hair in a pho hawk and often struggles to find a stylist that'll cut the sides the right length and fade into the top. It isn't just hair gel, the cut has to be right. I came here for a balyage from Jordi and had an extremely bad experience. Instead of a seamless transition into blonde, my hair looked like a colorblock of black and blonde. I even came back to try and fix it (I am extremely non confrontational and this is the first time I've ever done something like this) and she spent another 2 hours trying to soften it up but it felt unsalvageable. I had friends ask me if my roots grew out it was horrible. I kept the hair for 4 months before I decided to just chop it all of and start anew. First off I want to say everyone I interacted with here was SUPER nice. Incredibly friendly. I went in to get a neck trim and a color consult, and ended up with basically an undercut. I usually don't have to elaborate much when getting this service other places, just a clean up and squaring the edges a bit since I like a clean look when I put my hair up. But I gotta say I've been close to tears throughout the day looking at how high the stylist took my hairline. I'm just completely devastated. To top it off there are still long bits of hair towards the bottom of my neck, so even if I had wanted an undercut this would still not be great. I can't attest to their other services, but i would strongly advise bringing in pictures of exactly what you're looking for, even for a simple service. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I've had several decent experiences with Scream before - nothing amazing, but certainly nothing this bad. Today I walked in around 4:45 to see if they had time for a buzz. A female hairdresser with dreads said she did, but she had an appointment after me so she'd "hurry". If I'd know then that by "hurry" she meant "roughly shave me, giving me razor burn and cutting my scalp"...I would have passed! The whole ordeal took maybe 3-4 minutes - she was, as I said, very rough with the clippers and she didn't do a very thorough job trimming around ears, back of the neck, etc. My scalp wound is minor, so I didn't realize until I was already out of the salon and headed home that I was bleeding. Needless to say I will NOT be going back. As someone who has a super low-maintenance style, I'm seriously disappointed that Scream couldn't even manage to buzz my back and sides without bloodying my scalp. read more

Wow! 10/10 Experience! I came into my appointment and was seated literally on the dot even though Jade, my stylist, was with another customer who was a regular and I was brand new. The cut is fabulous and I love it! I didn't even have a picture with me and I consulted Jade, which is honestly a risky choice when getting a haircut but I'd heard great things already so I was inclined to take the risk. She didn't even have a picture but with her idea I was interested. She really took the time to make sure the hair style was right and the way I loved and she gave me advice for dying it! My sister had told me about this place and how good they were w color and she was right :) Had my first hair appointment here and Evan was my stylist.... and yes they accept walk ins . I wanted to do a red/orangey/blonde fade ombre and didn't know exactly what to do w it or how to really express my idea, but I showed Evan the photo and he pitched in good ideas and they do seem like they know exactly what to do. They like to perfect it close to the photo you show them. Even to the light, and how your hair color will show in daylight or whatnot, they will have it down. At first, I wondered why my hair color still seemed dark, but he had said that after about 3 showers, it'll fade into the color I'd want it to. He was right. He got the color down, but I think it's just my hair. I believe my hair wasn't bleached, so the brownish/black he mixed w the redish color I wanted, worked w how dark my hair was. Still content w it though :) I trusted Evan w his input. Customer service was nice. Very friendly people here. Spur of the moment decided I needed a haircut, as my split ends were getting the best of me. I was looking for an affordable place on Capitol Hill to get a haircut and found Scream. I went right when they opened, since I didn't have an appointment (they do allow walk ins). I was seen right away. I give them four stars for efficiency and cost. It's $25 for a haircut, the lady cut my hair dry, which I read in some reviews to be a bad thing, but personally I like getting my haircut dry and being able to see what they're doing. And it only took like 20 minutes max. I would've given them 5 stars, but the stylist didn't even ask me my name or offer hers. I consider that horrible customer service. I needed a haircut, and quick! After calling around other salons, Scream was the only one that picked up and had a walk-in availability. I was promptly seated and Kaley was very open to seeing images of what I wanted as well as listening to me describing what I was looking for style-wise. She checked in with me through the cut, and had me out of the chair in less than 20 min, all with a friendly and professional demeanor. The cut was absolutely what I wanted, and it was only $30! I was prepared to pay closer to ~$55 after looking at other salon prices. The biggest factor that will have me coming back to Scream is that FINALLY a stylist believed me when I said I wasn't afraid to go short! I really wanted to love this place! And I really had a good feeling about it till I saw how my hair turned out. I'm new to Seattle and used to more small town prices, so I was really happy to find an inexpensive places right near me with good reviews. I asked if they had a walk in and they got me in just an hour after my call. From the moment I entered they were all extremely friendly, and the place itself has a really fun vibe. Everyone there seems to love their job, it's clean and decorated in a really fun way, and there's lots of unique magazines to read as you wait. My hairdresser was really friendly and fun. I've been growing out my hair for a painstakingly long time and told her I only wanted a very small trim, split ends gone, with a bit of layering and thinning to blend my awkwardly grown out bangs into the rest of my hair. Throughout my haircut I emphasized a more than once that I really didn't want it much shorter at all if possible, and she assured me throughout the cut that she was only layering and not cutting off more than an inch of length, and how she's not one of those hairdressers that chops too much off. Well when I finally looked at my hair, over two inches was gone, maybe even three, and it looks really choppy. She had me turn around and point out spots for her that looks choppy so she could blend them a bit, but the more I did the choppier it looked and I was getting kind of emotional (stupid over hair, I know, but I've been trying to grow it out for a long time) so I finally said it was good enough so I wouldn't have even more damage done. I washed and styled it today before writing this review hoping to give the cut a second chance if it dried better then it looked when I left, but I still just really hate it. Overall, yes, my hair definitely has no split ends and looks healthier, but it's just a lot shorter, and it looks pretty uneven. I was really looking forward to getting my hair trimmed and blended after a long time and I wish I had saved the money and just did it myself. Maybe this place is great for fun and edgy styles, but for just the little trim I was looking for it was exactly what I was scared of. They emphasized at the end that I could come back any time within a week to have it evened out for free or to fix what I didn't like, which is a very friendly gesture. But I definitely won't be coming back without fearing I'd get another two or three inches cut off. It'll take a few months to grow back to where it was. :( read more

I did have to go back to get something fixed after part of my bangs looked a little blunter than I wanted, but fortunately they fixed them no problem and now they look great. They ruined my hair. It's a bummer bc the salon was cute & the stylists are nice, but holy sh*t they absolutely BUTCHERED my hair. I went in with about 7 inches of hair, asking for a simple trim/to clean up my mullet, but I have maybe 3 inches of hair left. She took my hair from a shaggy, rockstar mullet, to looking like an eight year old boy with the shortest, most atrocious bowl cut. Seriously, Will Byers' hair in S4 is better than what I left with. I can't look at myself in the mirror without crying because they hacked all of my hair in such an unflattering way & left me nothing to work with. After three years of struggling with my hair I had finally found my favorite style, & they completely ruined it. They refunded me after trying to fix it which was very nice, they were so kind to me, I feel bad leaving a bad review but I've never had such an awful haircut. I was literally sobbing in the chair, I wish I was joking when I said I want to put a bag over my head but I genuinely feel so embarrassed by my appearance. It's really jarring to have someone else make the decision to cut half of your hair off. Annually, I ask my friends with longer hair where they go to get their hair cut. Most of them answer that they get their hair cut at places whose haircuts range from $45 - $125. Me, I normally go to a place that charges $10. Then I forget about cutting my hair for a year, which starts the conversation with my friends again. They must be tired of my spin cycle but they humor me. This year (lol) I started with a baseline. Friends whose styles I really liked. That's when I found out about the above price ranges and that they were very... varied. And that's cool. Some people have luxurious thick hair, or a very exact cut that they get to complement their look. That takes skill and time, and definitely respect hairstylists and the work that they do. But, knowing that I have unexceptional hair that generally takes 10 min to cut, I needed to find someplace simpler. That's when I called Scream and they told me that a regular haircut is $30 flat. Nice! I set an appointment for the next day. Here's what was different about this haircut and will ensure that I'm a -more- regular customer: She asked me how I wear my ponytail. High, I said. That was a first. I walked in with a ponytail and appreciated that she asked me that, especially since I'm usually in a bun or ponytail. The resulting cut is subtle. My hair looks healthy and is unusually smooth in both look and feel though she didn't put any product in or blow dry my hair. A second point that I appreciated. Over a year after growing out my pixie cut, I decided to go back to short hair. Extensive yelping lead me to Laken at Scream based on reviews and price point. Though I did look into stylists at Bang, paying over $60 for a haircut just seemed absurb to me. I came here on a Saturday, having scheduled my appointment the day before. Laken and I talked a little bit beforehand about how I was looking for a pixie cut with long-ish sides and that I did not want the back of my hair cut too short because I have a lot of baby hairs theres and didn't want any shaving to be done. She did my entire cut with a razor, talking a little bit with me socially, but also letting me close my eyes and relax. I'm pretty laidback about hair cuts, but I will say that I wasn't initially super sold on the haircut. I felt like she perhaps hadn't worked a lot with Asian hair, with its thicker, straight texture. She was very nice about thinning out my hair on top and shaping the sides. Afterwards, she shampooed and conditioned my hair, which I was really happy with; dry hair cuts are much better, especially with drastic changes, since you see what your hair will actually look like. During the wash, she gave a decent scalp massage, though it didn't last long. She blew dry my hair a little bit, and did some touching up, and then I paid: $30, before tip, for a slightly less than one hour experience. I wouldn't have a problem going back to Laken, but I will caution people who are particular about their hair to be sure to speak up. Also, when I got home, I realized that she had never turned me around to show me the back of my head, and it was slightly uneven. It took me about a week or more to really "grow into" liking my haircut, and I did a little touch up here or there when I noticed uneven spots, but now I'm fairly happy with it. Other things to note: street parking was not too hard to find on a weekend, but it was metered. Also, their bathroom is small, but clean. read more

I really wanted to like this salon. I've been here last year and I had a good experience. Not this year though. First of all, they take a lot of walks-ins and don't respect the scheduling times. In two consecutive times I had an appointment, waited for half an hour, and then left because no hairdresser was available. This week I had a haircut there after waiting again for 20 minutes. All I wanted was a long classic bob and I liked that the hairdresser took the time to walk through some pics with me to show her what I want. She even told me she'll try some short layers so that my hair doesn't curl up. Well, I ended looking like Amelie Poulain - with a very very short bob and my hair does curl up a lot because it's too short. The length of my hair doesn't even reach my shoulders at this point. I don't want to know what a short bob means in my hairdresser's vision! Overall, bad experience and I won't be going there again. Later edit: three weeks later and my hair still looks like shit. It's short, and it looks choppy and messy - I can't do anything with it other than wear it in a small ponytail because it won't stay otherwise. I had checked out a couple of other salons, but when I showed them the picture of the color I wanted, they were hesitant that they could accomplish it. I was referred to scream by a coworker. She told me that they are known for doing funky colors and cuts. I was able to get in pretty much right away so I was stoked but also nervous. I showed my stylist Jordi a photo of what I wanted and to my relief she was super confident that she could give it to me. I am extremely happy with the results. It's perfect! Thanks again Jordi!! It sounds like basic customer service you would expect but it's surprisingly hard to come by these days. I have been on the verge of going from long hair back to a short cut for a couple of years, and I finally decided yesterday that I was going to take the plunge. I asked friends for recommendations last night, and after considering my options, I called Scream late this morning to see if they could get me in sometime this weekend. They had several appointment times available today, which was awesome. Laken was my stylist, and she took excellent care of me. I showed her some photos of cuts that I liked and told her what I liked about each of them. She immediately understood what I wanted, and within 45 minutes she had me out the door with a fresh-to-death new cut.
