I walk past Screwtop on my walk to Gold's Gym. It also smells so good! I had been there previously for wine flights, but I decided to go with a friend for dinner. We ordered a bottle of rose, and I got the maple bourbon chicken panini -- yum! It came with a side salad which was essentially just some lettuce. I came back a few weeks later with a bunch of girl friends for a wine night. We got flights, ordered bottles, and got dinner. I wasn't super impressed with the food this time around. I got the greek salad -- which was good, but nothing amazing -- and a shrimp dish. The shrimp was scorching hot and a bit overcooked. The sauce also had a strange sting to it that didn't seem to compliment the shrimp very well. The overall consensus was that while this was a great environment for a girls' night, the food wasn't as good as we thought it would be based on how amazing it always smells and how much they charge for it. Some other dishes that were ordered were nachos, BBQ sandwich, goat cheese and bread, and grilled cheese with tomato soup. I heard the grilled cheese is the best option on the menu! read more

To be clear -- i am rating this venue on what it calls itself -- a wine bar. I am not rating it on its friendly service, cozy interior, and good food -- all of which would justify a 3 or 4 rating. The wines, however, and that's the reason why at least I went there, are outrageously expensive, too warm (above room temp instead below), and mediocre at best. They offer no wine tastes, just flights, which de-qualifies them from being a "wine bar" in the first place. Like the wine offerings, the flights have not been selected in good faith to provide the audience with a great experience -- judging from the type of wines, vintages, and appellations, they were selected for MARGIN maximization. Well, I am used to this from the steak joint on the corner, but a wine bar should be different. Amazingly enough, this venue is almost FULL every night, because it serves as the hangout for the local Arlington yuppie crowd. Another sad confirmation of the long-known fact that the world can ship their second-class crap to the US as long as the margins are right because most of the patrons of wine bars go there for the socializing, not the wine, and wouldn't notice the difference to excellent wine anyway.. read more

Screwtop is by far my favorite wine bar! Conveniently locted within blocks of the Clarendon Metro and nearby to other great restaurants, bars and shopping, this wine bar has a lot to offer! Many different wines from around the world! if you're not sure the waiter/waitresses can assist you. They also have flights (red and white) that are changed out quite often, to give people something new. Their flights include 3 glasses or either all reds or all whites and they each tell you where the wine came from, how much the bottle costs and what the flavors are in the wine. Flights are reasonable priced too. For food I HIGHLY recommend the baked goat cheese!! This will feed at least 4 four people easily and very addictive! All of their food is great but you cannot go wrong with their baked goat. You can become a member and receive two bottle of wine a month along with a cheese and meat and they have tastings that are free. Screwtop is a great place for a date or girls night out! read more

The first time I visited ScrewTop was the weekend of January 8th, and the second time was just this past Sunday...so needless to say, I'm a fan. Both visits were during weekend days -- around lunch time, so the place was virtually empty on each visit, but seeing how this place has barely been open, I don't think the lack of customers means anything. Perhaps the location is a bit hidden, but the folks who appreciate good food, good wine and good service will find it. The first visit I met two of my girlfriends there. We couldn't decide what wine to order, so our server brought us a variety of samples and couldn't have been more helpful with her knowledge of what was available. The three of us opted to order appetizers to share and we ordered the cheese sliders, the cheddar and bacon bruschetta and the "perfect date night" (dates with bleu cheese wrapped in bacon). Everything was excellent, but the dates...seriously...they melted in your mouth. My boyfriend and I went for lunch this past Sunday and had a great time. First of all, we weren't rushed at all, so BONUS. Our biggest pet peeve with restaurants is that you're slammed with drink, appetizer, then meal-during-appetizer. Meals are meant to enjoy and savour, and ScrewTop allowed us that experience. We ordered the baked camembert (which is a meal in itself), and then I had the tomato bisque with a spinach salad, while he had the Sophia's Serenade sandwich. There is no skimping on food at this place...we ate every bite and were stuffed the rest of the day. The menu is fun...and friendly, so if you're not a wine expert you won't feel insecure about your choices (especially with such a helpful staff). The place is cozy and has a good vibe about it. Popped in to check out their store and were pleasantly surprised to find they had our Anderson Valley Winter Solstice beer (soooo good!!). The woman at the register said they actually had it on tap at their bar, so we sad we'll be back!! Took a sample of their toffee (amazing!) and headed out for some shopping in Clarendon. We stopped back later and did get two beers at the bar and an order of their date night snacks (dates wrapped in bacon stuffed with blue cheese with a balsamic glaze) which was just the snack we needed. Amy our bartender was great and explained some of the specials and flights they have and then gave us some of their truffled popcorn which is given to anyone who sits at the bar and honestly it was so yummy. Screwtop is my go-to brunch spot when I find myself in Arlington. Half wine store half bar/restaurant, it combines all of my favorite things! They've got a great selection of reasonably priced wine for sale, and the food menu is awesome. I have a hard time ordering anything other than the grilled cheese and tomato soup, but the buffaloaf sandwich is amazing if you have time for a food coma after. Honestly, there's nothing on the menu that I wouldn't eat. My only complaint is that service can be pretty slow. Last time I went for brunch, we spent a good amount of time staring at the kitchen hoping for our food to come out. Still, this adorable local spot is absolutely worth a visit! read more

I can't stop raving about the fun Valentine's Day Wine and Chocolate event ScrewTop put together. It was so much fun, not because they served top-of-the-line wine but that they showcased some unique, small distribution wine that I've never heard of that paired so perfectly with the delish pieces of chocolate heaven from Artisan Confections. With each pairing, Wendy would provide some background on the wine, which were impressively fragrant, and Jason would chime in about the chocolate pieces that complemented each pour. He even taught us about the decorative transfer coating that he places on the hot chocolate to give it the gorgeous artsy veneer. Sure, at first I was quite skeptical because it clearly showed that they were new at this. There was operational inefficiencies that I was itching to revamp. However, as the night progresses with more alcohol consumption, I totally forgot about this. I'm sure in a few more months, Wendy will have it all executing with perfection. I must say, Zoso Flats, which is the loft complex that houses both of these shops, totally lucked out with attracting some top-notch nitch retail shops. read more

I stopped by Screwtop tonight to meet up with some friends for a Happy Hour. I am not much of a wine person, so I can't really comment much on that, except that there were ALOT of wines available and they had wine on tap. Which would be really cool, if I drank wine. Instead, I just had water and had the Sophia's Serenade sandwich which had prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, sun dried tomato pesto, regular pesto and mixed greens on a ciabatta roll. It was really good! A little on the pricey side for a sandwich, but like I said, it was really good. I'd like to come back and try more of their food and maybe a glass of wine one of these days. I went to Screwtop last night with 2 friends and was sad to see there were no happy hour deals! You should at least put a red and white house wine on special. Sigh. We split a cheese plate with a fig spread and the portions were decently generous. I also had the french onion with Gruyere sandwich (cheese hangover this morning). Sadly, the sandwich was not memorable. I didn't get a chance to check out the store. I noticed they had a sign in the bathroom about wine pairing classes. That may be fun. I do remember their wine flights were $15 for 3 2.5 oz pours. I just went to Grand Cru the week before, and by a slim margin, I prefer it to Screwtop. The pate, smoked mozzarella and meats here are awesome and delicious. The salads are too small and not worth it. The wine selection is good, and they change it up often enough. There can be a wait here on the weekends, but in general, it shouldn't be too difficult. The service can be slow at times. The people here are really nice, but I do remember that one waitress had a grudge against me or something. She never spoke to me directly or asked me what I wanted. 2.5, I went here on a date and while the service was attentive and the wine was adequate, the space felt a little cramped and uncomfortable. And no that just wasn't due to the date! I do think they could work on decorating the place to be a little more swanky and lush like a wine bar should be. For the price, the wine also wasn't all that impressive. Considering that this is a wine bar in VA with local wineries only a 1.5hr down 66, I expected a little more. I live in Rosslyn and I still wouldn't go out of my way to go to ScrewTop. We love Screwtop. This locally owned and operated wine bar/restaurant is a shining star of the community. As a local resident, it's so refreshing to have a unpretentious, fun, establishment that has developed it's own unique charm. How many times my lady and I have witnessed first dates here, couples laughing together while sharing bottles of wine. The food is amazingly tasty, also. I love their simple yet elevated and refined grilled cheese sandwich. Oozing with 3 cheezes, it's pressed down and presented crunchy and warm with a lovely salad and tomato soup. It's my go to even in the summer time but perfect for cold, wintry nights. We recommend this restaurant to all of our friends when seeking a low-key establishment, and in particular, friends that are wine aficionados. read more

This is a personal favorite. From years ago when I lived in North Carolina and would visit friends down the road from Screwtop in Arlington, this was always a favorite to visit. Now that I live here, it's a place I now can introduce to others. I brought my girlfriend the other week for a nice quiet glass of wine. They have a wide variety of wines to choose from and rotate them out. They have really neat wine dispensers on the counter tops. Another notable add is the great menu they have that is derived from fresh ingredients and their specials also rotate. The desserts always help the room smell fragrant and warm. The cobb salad with fresh avocado is incredible and I highly recommend. If you're only interested in wine or a small snack, they offer great nachos or freshly popped popcorn! They have an array of cheese plate that are available along with the rows and rows of bottles of wine and other spices/cheese and tshirts as soon as you walk in. The location of Screwtop is great -- in quaint little Clarendon, although parking can be a bit of a pain but usually not too bad to find a spot! Great night to sit, talk and laugh with a friend or significant other and prices are decent! Feel free to stroll past and enjoy yourself some wine! I know I'll be going again very soon! read more

Cute little place that sells wine and cheese, but also has a bar and a few tables where you can order food, charcuterie, cheese, drinks, etc. They had a good wine selection for happy hour as well as a decent selection of cheeses and meats (no happy hour pricing on the charcuterie unfortunately). I stopped here for lunch one day while working from home. I'm a member of their wine club but haven't ate much there. The cilantro chicken salad wrap was pretty good, it came with a side so i figured a nice cold gazpacho would hit the spot. It did much more than that and truly stole the show! Cute, cute and did I mention cute? I read about their lovely "most of the day" happy hour and knew this was a place I should visit. The very next time I was in the neighborhood, a friend and I decided to give it a try. Soooooo glad we did. It doubles as a wine/basket shop so along one wall you'll find plenty of tasty looking bottles. It's quaint so go with people you like because you'll be intimately seated. Not. A. Problem. At. All. I thoroughly enjoy meaningful convos and Screwtop offers that platform. On to the food/wine! The joy I felt when I saw all the cheese and charcuterie options was undeniable. I chose 3 items and they were delicious. My friend ordered the tomato bisque and feel in love. However, the show stopper was the short rib sandwich - amazingly tasty. Now although this was served first I had to save the best for last. As a bar snack, we were given samples of their truffle popcorn. Since I think popcorn should be a good group, I was in heaven. After an afternoon stroll through Clarendon, me and two of my work girlfriends ended up here to enjoy a nice glass of wine before going separate ways again. I ordered a glass of Domaine de Pouy which did not disappoint. Crip and refreshing, it totally hit the point. The girls also enjoyed their choices (can't remember what they were though). The staff let us try the truffle popcorn since one of my friends who frequents this place a lot, was raving about it, but it didn't do much for me. Their cheese selection looked amazing, however. Definitely something to try on my next visit here. Overall, I really liked the vibe of this place. It is a chill spot to hang out with friends, have brunch and of course, drink some excellent wine. Oh I just love this place. It's so great for a girl's night out. We usually end up just splitting bottles of wine and appetizers... the little grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup and the pork nachos are our faves! The wine is expensive but it's some of the best I've had. My only gripe is that I wish they took reservations for less than 5 people - the place is very tiny. Update -- though I live about 30 minutes away, I recently joined the "club red" wine club and it's amazing. The wine each month is completely worth the $60 and the pick up parties are fabulous. My friend & I grabbed lunch here and found it to be quite yummy. The bread was fantastic. I had a goat cheese sandwich, sans the ham, and asked for greens in place of pork, and it was quite good. Not a fan of this place. I love most wine bars, but this is not one of my favorites. The lay out is very strange. The tables all all against one wall with the area behind the bar very wide. The rest of the space is a wine store. I didn't have a chance to try their food since I got there at 10p.m. and they had stopped serving. But the food looked boring. Just cheese, salads and sandwiches. No real small plates like a lot of wine bars. Plus, they stopped serving wine at 11p.m. Very weird. Most wine bars stay open much later. I guess that's because they are also open for lunch unlike most wine bars but who drinks wine at lunch when you have to go back to work. Something wrong with that business plan. read more

One night, a friend suggested we meet here for a couple of glasses of wine, before dinner. Great idea! This place was super-relaxed, cool, and nice. I didn't have the food, but I was certainly helping myself to some Shiraz and Cotes Du Rhone. Service was solid and our server was very conscientious and courteous. He made sure we all were enjoying our wine and made sure not to be in our faces throughout the night. Overall, this is a great place for any occasion. Sorry. 5 stars for the food, 4 stars for the wine and ambiance, 3 stars for the service (but it was a busy Saturday night). The theme of the cuisine at Screwtop is my very favorite - fancy comfort food. They also have a wide array of cheese and charcuterie but I choose to spend my calories elsewhere. The heart-shaped grilled cheese sliders were okay, but the tomato coulis that accompanied them was incredible. The buffaloaf sandwich with bison, bacon, cheddar, and chipotle aioli on ciabatta was honestly one of the top ten sandwiches of my life - I'd go back just for this. The trio of mac and cheeses was fun and the truffle oil mac and cheese was to die for. The chipotle goat and tangy blue were tasty but nothing special. If I'd had a bit more room in my tummy I'd have tried the cheddar and bacon bruschetta. The service was disappointingly slow (ten minute delay between my flight and my husband's flight coming out), but I'm willing to overlook this considering that it was a busy Saturday night, we had a great table, and the flights were $5 off, making them a very affordable $5-7. Screwtop is single-handedly responsible for my addiction to wine. Like really good wine. The kind from small and distant artisan producers around the world. No one else in Arlington even comes close. The only reason this place isn't a 5-star is because they close a little early on the weekends. PLEEEASE stay open til midnight? And here's a little tip: like them on Facebook! Screwtop was such a pleasant place to be present in with very warm service. I am by no means a wine connoisseur or close to it, but it seemed like they had a good selection or varied wines. However, it was a tad bit the pricey side for a glass of wine for me (average full glass of wine is ~$14). For special occasions, I would be back regardless of prices! Date night at Screwtop was really fun. We thoroughly enjoyed the high quality and tasteful selection of wines, snacks, and entrees. The selection of wines and fights of wine were refined and really really tasty. I'm no aficionado or expert on wines, but I'm no slouch either. Kudos to whoever selected the wines. We ordered a flight of reds and followed it up with a bottle from the wine we liked 'second best' from the flight (A Paso Robles blend called Troublemaker). The 'first best' bottle was $80 and although it was tempting, the $35 price tag of still excellent Troublemaker was a better choice. By the way, on Wednesday's, if you order a bottle from the featured flights, its $12 off the listed price. We followed up with a cheese plate and the pulled pork nachos. Both were incredibly flavorful. For the record, the roasted tomato salsa served with the nachos is the best salsa I've found in the DC area. Thanks for the second helping! There are two reasons I am giving a four star instead of a five. First, while the staff was REALLY fast, friendly, and fun, they weren't very expressive about the wines and cheeses. Usually at a wine bar you sort of expect to hear lavish mouthwatering descriptions of the wineries and regions who produce the amazing food. Second, I felt the environment/ambiance was sort of stale and institutional. This is half store half wine bar. The area is a little crowded, but it is nice. We sat at the community table and did a flight. I like that you can choose your own flight selection. They also have small plates that you can order with your wine. We had the empanadas- which I wouldn't normally pair with wine- but they were delicious. The service (actually have 2 waiters since we can't keep Shawn all to ourselves) was attentive, as in checking in the right times like just before we wanted to order something but not annoying like every 20 minutes. The atmosphere was very relaxing: dim lights with candles, open to ductowork, good sized tables/chairs, large windows seeing the quiet street (it is nicely hidden on the side)... 4 for wine/cheese They have a very nice selection of wines, and some good beers but that's for later. We got a flight of red and white just to try, I do believe red is better to pair with what's on their menu. It is also a good idea to know what you're getting before actually ordering them, the staff knows about everything... They have interesting charcuterie and cheese selections, I personally love the Bucheron (French Cheese), Dubliner (Irish Cheese), Pâté de Canard, and the Chianti Salami. Their cheese/meat platters were pretty filling, definitely worth the price and highly recommended if you're new to this or just can't decide on one. 3 for food Yuppie Jerky was ridiculously salty (from the dressing). I mean it took an entire glass of wine just to eat a quarter of the dish, so I ended up leaving the baby arugula on the plate. The Bresaola was good though, and so were the Bison Sliders. We wanted some Warm Pumpkin Bread Pudding to go with the season and crap the meal up, but they ran out (at 8pm?!) so they gave us the Chocolate Sheet Cakes and half a glass of sweet rose bubbly on the house.
