Excellent views of the Pacific Ocean and Excellent service make this place stand out. The rooms themselves are not exactly 5 star however, you could care less since EVERY ROOM has an Ocean view! It's hard to complain when you open the door to leave your hotel room and you see the ocean. This place is oceanfront and you can hear the waves crashing all night long. The bathroom was small, but it will suit your needs. The rooms are large and furnished in a cool beach theme. Breakfast was continental with juices, muffins, croissants and such. There's a Keurig for you to brew your morning cup of coffee. I highly recommend taking your coffee and morning pastry and sitting on a bench to take in the view. It's a no frills type breakfast, but it's really enjoyable. The location is amazing and you're really close to a ton of nice restaurants and shops. I just checked into the Scripps inn. We booked this place to celebrate my husbands birthday and it is NOT what we expected. Maybe we had high expectations for a nearly $400 per night room. The location is nice (why I gave it 2 stars) but the room is not what was advertised. The "lanai" is a walkway with 2 tiny chairs, not a lounge area and the "full ocean view" is a view of the roof of the hotel. The bathroom is in desperate need of a remodel and looks dirty. If you like over priced hard beds and a room with a roof view then this is your place. I am majorly disappointed what a depressing rip off this place is! read more

Stayed here for two nights this past weekend. The location is perfect, right across the street from the beach. You could see the water and hear the waves crashing. The room was clean and nicely decorated in a beachy motif. The bed was very comfy. The room had a small fridge and a Keurig machine. There is also a continental breakfast offered in the morning. We had some croissants and muffins with juice. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. I look forward to going back there again soon. I will start with the positives. Great location, right next to the ocean, walking distance to almost everywhere you need i. e. restaurants, shopping, museums, etc. The front desk and the staff are courteous and the most importantly the room was clean. Now the cons. The inn is really old and the walls are paper thin. First night of our stay the people staying next to us snored all night, super loud, the walls were shaking, couldn't sleep the entire night. The next night others checked in and this time on the menu sex. You can hear everything!!! No slippers, no complimentary water but there is a coffee machine in the room, so i will give it to them. And there was construction noise next to us at the museum, but that's temporary. Anyways overall positive, it's worth it for the location, but I wouldn't pay no more then $410 for two night stay. read more

How is it possible that I am the first person to write a review for the Scripps Inn? I find that rather amazing - kind of like how we wound up staying here in the first place. After a long weekend in San Diego, visiting with my friend and her brand new little baby (awwww). My BF and I stopped for breakfast in La Jolla before hitting the road back to SF. Well...the weather was perfect, the sun was shining, the sky was clear and blue. We were right on the coast overlooking the crashing waves, admiring the plush beauty that is La Jolla. Suddenly it hit us both - HARD. I'm not ready to go back! Nooooo! Please just one more day, I have to get in that ocean, I can't go back - not yet. I'm not ready! Visiting with the cute baby was fun and all, but this..this looks like VACATION! I must remain here. So...we both cleared our responsibilities with a shake of life's Etch-a-Sketch and took a stroll along the beach after breakfast. That's where we happened upon Scripps Inn. It is perfectly situated a shell's throw from the beach. Just fourteen airy, beautiful rooms with spectacular ocean views. Some of them also have fireplaces. Just as we walked up to the charming B & B the manager walked into the office. As luck would have it, someone had just canceled their reservation. There was one (perfect) room available, for just one (perfect) night. YES! Fate was on our side. The room was flawless, the location could not be beat. The service was extremely accommodating and helpful. Ahhhhhh.....a truly memorable extra 24 hours of life spent in sun, surf and supreme comfort. We stayed here mid-January of 2017. This is a fantastic little gem of a hotel is located on the water. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. The winter rates were very reasonable. We enjoyed that we were walking distance to the shops and bars of La Jolla, however in a very quiet part of the village. Would definitely recommend! read more

What a treat it was for us to find such an amazing place! Via Hotels.com, I found this place and decided to give it a go due to location and price point (hotels.com lowered the price from $265 to $285 for a deluxe). The location alone is completely worth the price, however, what sets it over the edge is the management. Elaine Akeroyd, the Scripps Inn Hotel Manager, was the best hospitality employee I have come across in my trips. Her attention to detail and general warmth as a person, really made our trip such a delight. I highly recommend seeking out her advise and attention when you decide to stay here, you will NOT be disappointed! The rooms themselves are not exactly 5 star (dated furnishings...), however, you could care less due to the overall beauty of EVERY ROOM having an Ocean view! This is a "down-to-earth" establishment, and it wouldn't be the same if everything was ultra modern and chic like most places that charge this much, but it suits the Scripps Inn perfectly! Don't bother staying anywhere else in La Jolla...trust me. This is a GREAT establishment! read more

We have stayed here several times and I must say that is is one of our favorite places to stay. We recently went down for a night and it was really nice. It is literally across the street from the beach. There is a nice little green belt across the street looking over the water with picnic and park benches. It is a great place to sit and watch the sunset. Hard to beat the location. It is close to downtown La Jolla within easy walking distance (one small hill to climb). The room is nice and clean. We prefer the room tucked away in the corner for extra quiet and privacy. The staff is very helpful and friendly. There are also nice touches like terry cloth bathrobes in the closet. The only semi-negative thing that I would say is that the shower in our room did not have very good water pressure. Not a deal breaker though! read more

During my years working as a travel writer I have been privy to staying in some of the nicest hotels around the world. And the boutique Scripps Inn is in my Top 3. The rooms are spacious, bright and nicely appointed. There is just the right amount of furniture to keep the feeling light and airy. Room #15 has a little patio facing the water - ideal for the morning coffee or the afternoon cocktail. But all the other rooms, too, have a little sitting arrangement outside their door to relax and enjoy the view of the ocean. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, creating an atmosphere that feels like visiting distance relatives. It's right on Coast Boulevard, and across it there's only the ocean. And Coast Boulevard isn't a busy thoroughfare, but a slow, scenic drive. The chocolate croissant was on the stale side, but the coffee from the Keurig coffee maker made up for it. read more

We stayed in room #12 with views of the ocean and a fire place. We did set off the fire alarm so be careful, novice fire builders that we are. Bed was soft and pillowy and the room felt cozy on a foggy, chilly evening in January. Loved this tidy, little jewel of a hotel perched right on the edge of the pacific. Easy access to La Jolla Cove and the restaurants, shops and the like around the village. I am deeply disappointed with the service we received for my brother's wedding. In my last review I had talked about how wonderful it was when I had stayed here on my wedding night. So when it came time for my brother's wedding, naturally I knew what to recommend. Or so I thought... Firstly, I know for a fact that, yes my brother and sister in law did enjoy their stay for the most part. However they were very displeased with how the romance package that I purchased for them as a surprise played out. The romance package is supposed to include rose petals, chocolates, champagne, and candles as well as a lit fireplace. This costs $120. I had initially purchased the package over the phone when booking their rooms for them. I was booking a room for them as well as my sister in law's mother who would be staying in another room downstairs. I had given my personal credit card to ensure that not they nor any of their guests who were also staying at the hotel would be charged. I also had requested a specific time for it to be delivered so as to have a spectacular surprise when they arrived in their room after their nuptials. Understanding that the office closes at 6:30pm, I was told when I originally booked that the candles, the flowers, the chocolates and champagne would be setup when they were not in the room, with the fireplace lit, before the office closed, and ready for their 9:30pm return after the wedding. A few days before the wedding, I had called the hotel to once again confirm all this and ensure that the correct credit card was to be charged. My sister in law ended up being charged for it, not me. The office had charged her when her mother checked out of her room down stairs and a final bill was printed. My sister in law asked me about it right before her ceremony. I assured her I'd take care of it and that I was sorry. She should have not had to deal with it at all, let alone on her wedding day. Not only that, the items for the romance package were brought to them before their wedding ceremony even happened at 3pm when they were still there. According to my sister in law, David told them "hey look you have a romance package!" and then dropped it all off with them. When I asked her if he at least lit the fire place she said. "Was he supposed to?" To which I replied yes and she was even more disappointed because he of course did not. To top it all off, after the wedding was over, I called to sort out the bill that was not charged correctly and merely let them know that maybe they could have done a better job. I had the "great" fortune to speak to David. He proceeded to talk over me so that I was unable to get a word in edgewise. He claimed he knew all this already and that he did a great job. (who is he trying to convince?) He raised his voice, told me off that the couple were happy so clearly there was no problem. Floored, I demanded to speak to a manager. David declined. Finally after multiple requests and much arguing and attempting to just explain my story, I asked again to speak to someone else, he said that Bryce wouldn't be back for a couple weeks and that there was no manager. After going back and fourth with him speaking rudely, I decided that instead of paying the full price that I had fully intended to pay, I no longer wished to pay anything considering that they had bugled the entire situation and then he had the audacity to speak to a customer in such a rude manner. He refused and said that things would stay as they were. We argued about this some more and he said he would only reduce it to $75 but only if I gave him the correct credit card because he didn't have it and never did. For the third time I gave the Scripps Inn Hotel my credit card number to right this situation. I received a call from my sister in law, while on her honeymoon, that her credit card had been charged $75. I then looked at my statement and saw that mine had been charged as well that same $75. Floored once again, I called Scripps Inn hotel back and in order to not speak with David again, I spoke to another representative in the billing department who was very kind and professional and very understanding. She got the authorization to correct the issue and now the payment has finally been sorted. From bungling the package, to messing up the billing, to the complete lack of respect over the phone, I am just sad. I spoke to Bryce about it today and I can appreciate his reaching out. He was professional and kind. It's a shame I couldn't have just dealt with him as he seems to be on top of things. I hope they can remedy this so that it doesn't happen to anyone again. read more

I've been torn on how to rate this stay. The location is undeniably 5 stars. Right close to shell beach and children's pool. The beaches I will say have waves that are a bit more steep than La Jolla shores. The tide pool was cool to see also. All within walking distance. The room I got in particular was crappy in that I was flanked by neighbors on both sides and upstairs so it was VERY noisy. The upstairs is what was driving me crazy, footsteps that sound like they are going to break through. The 6 car parking spots are in the middle of this U-shaped inn, windows are mostly all open to catch the great ocean breeze and you get the people who don't realize this (or maybe they do and don't care) and yell or talk to where I can hear their whole conversations where they park. Once parking is full, you get multiple people that pull up and just have whole conversations on where they are going to park and if this car has a permit or not. Literally whole conversations. I just had to slam my windows shut since it was almost midnight....though I could still hear them. And they ended up being my neighbors to the left. The rooms though renovated, are definitely worn down. The seats on couches and dining chairs are dirty. It's definitely the cottagey kind of a feel. And the lanai I have in front of my room is two dining chair looking things on a shared walkway. Not the private little patio I thought we got. I would still certainly recommend and would consider staying again if I got an upstairs room. It was nice just to walk up and down the streets. read more

This place was absolutely charming! But I think calling it a bed and breakfast is extremely misleading. The location is what you are paying for in the price, but it is an amazing location. I watched the sun set on the ocean and fell asleep to the sound of the waves. The rooms are nice enough, and the staff there (I think his name was Michael?) was very very friendly and helpful. We had two vehicles, but they only charged us for one parking fee ($12). My biggest complaint is the breakfast, or lack there of. We got up early (6am) and the hotel was dead. Not a soul around and the lobby was closed. So I went back to the room and made coffee and got the kids ready. At 7, everything was still closed up and no breakfast in sight. We had to get moving then, so we took off and I had to call and check out over the phone because the lobby was still closed. I don't know what time breakfast is out or when the staff shows up, but we were disappointed to leave with empty bellies and checking out over the phone. read more

I stayed at Scripps Inn for my wedding. My wedding party and I got ready in the upstairs suite and it was the perfect amount of space. Everyone had a comfortable space, and it wasn't too crowded with the hair and makeup artists. Not to mention the natural light in the room is INSANE. We got married across the street at Cuvier Park, so it was great because I didn't have to be transported to a ceremony location, and then our reception was at LJWC which is a short walk away as well. The only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the floor/carpet was super dirty. All of our feet were black. read more

Scripps Inn was absolutely fantastic. Its beautiful location and amazing decoration had me completely in awe. As you might guess, being from up North, visiting San Diego in early January and being able to actually walk around outside in shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops was something quite miraculous... but when you include the crashing waves that are very audible from my room in Scripps Inn (room 5), it becomes an invaluable experience. The Inn offers a continental breakfast in the lobby and both mornings that I was there, I enjoyed some very good muffins, in addition to orange juice and coffee from the Keurig machine in (what I assume) each room/suite. Now, onto my favourite part, the decoration: my room had a very fitting colour scheme of sky blue, white and sandy-coloured furniture. There were seashells, lights reminiscent of bottles (like a message in a bottle), and other adorable nautical decorations everywhere you looked in the room. The bed was a sprawling king, neatly tucked in the corner of the room, beneath some small windows that could be opened for unbeatable ocean sounds. There was also a loveseat with a cute matching ottoman, a small round table with four chairs, bedside tables, and a dresser that had a wall-mounted tv. The bathroom was also a very good size, with two sinks, a full-length mirror, and a nicely sized bathtub inside. The counters were a lovely light stone and I was extremely happy to see that they also had a magnifying mirror, because who doesn't love seeing all of your flaws at 5x zoom! (But actually, I really appreciate these mirrors) In addition to everything above, they also had some nice additional little perks like extremely soft robes and bedsheets, a selection of coffees to use with the Keurig machine, and 24/7 operator support through a phone outside of the office. Plus, their after-hours check-in process is really quite fun (and kind of James Bond-esque!), where you get instructions to go to the operator support phone (located outside in a wooden box), pick up the phone which will automatically dial for you, list out your name, receive a code, open a lockbox and then receive your room key(s), a map of the property and a welcome letter in a sealed envelope with your name on it... Yeah, I know, VERY secret agent, right?? Anyways, I absolutely loved this place and I really hope that I get a chance to come back and stay here in the future. I'll be sure to try! read more

I read all the reviews for this place and as for prices yeah, I can tell you it was a little pricey but for the area it truly was a better deal especially if you found Scripps in through expedia or cheaphotels.com sort of site. The advertising for the hotel threw me I have to agree with one of the viewers listed below sure we had some good views but we had to cross a street and hike down some rocks to be at the beach. Their site made it sound like you open a door and your right there. Granted the front desk staff was awesome and having parking handy was def a plus but i just expected more for the price. I live in Vegas and I know that views sell. I also don't understand why it's called a bed and breakfast, maybe they get away with it because it is smaller but trust me.. it wasn't a bed and breakfast type that I've stayed in before. But the room size was great for 2 people. Overalls the experience was nice due to the fact that we were part of downtown and we weren't that far from the beach, I guess I just expected more from what was stated on their website. read more

Cute little place. I was luckily upgraded to a 2 bedroom with small living room, dining area and kitchenette. Location was awesome. Quiet. Beds firm which I like. Very clean. Only gripe was whatever cleaning products housekeeping used were horrendous. The moment I opened the door it was super strong and unpleasant. Place basically smelled like bad smelling soap. I came here a few months ago and super glad I did! It was extremely clean, literally a few steps from the beach. The bed was comfy. The only con to this place is parking. It is very limited. If you come later, like after the office has closed, they aren't really clear as to where you should park. So we just parked in the front, but we were told we were lucky my best friend didn't get his car towed cause we aren't suppose to park there. I wanted to stay here again this past weekend I went to SD but the price has now doubled! My wife and I booked our stay at Scripps Inn for June, 2017. Right off the bat, the reservation process was probably one of the easiest we've ever had. Everyone we spoke with was very friendly and went out of their way to ensure all our questions were answered. Then, after booking, they actually called a few times and sent emails to make sure any questions or concerns we had were answered. They certainly win the day with their customer service. We requested a room with a view of the ocean, and preferable one in which we could actually hear the surf. We booked the Junior King Suite, and they reserved 'the best room' they had for us - Room 12 - to make sure our stay was what we had expected. And it was more so. Check in was very easy. Our room was actually ready sooner than they had anticipated so we were able to check in as soon as we arrived (we drove from Phoenix). Destiny checked us in and was extremely pleasant and helpful. She marked a map with local eateries and stores, then walked us to our room. The room was unbelievably wonderful! And it is easy to see why this is the best room they have, and a quest favorite. With two large windows looking over the ocean (about 50 yards or less away), you can not only hear the waves crashing, but you can smell the wonderful ocean spray. Between the windows is a quaint gas fireplace, which we got much use out of! The room itself was very clean and well maintained. Usually it's not out of the ordinary to find at least some dirt or such in a hotel room, but from what we could tell, not here. The bathroom was amazing as well. The shower was an incredibly wonderful surprise. One typically expects hotel showers to be basic, low pressure jobs, with small shower heads. Not here. The water pressure was terrific, and the shower head? A HUGE downpour affair that made it difficult to leave! The bed was very comfortable as well, another oddity for a hotel. It was very much a Goldilocks situation - not too firm, not too soft, just right. The room is definitely comfortable, and a great place to relax after a tough day hanging out by the ocean! My wife and I love Southern California and typically stay in an area with sandy beaches, like Coronado. This was our first stay in La Jolla, so we didn't know what to expect. The town is beautiful, and very reminiscent of something you'd find in Hawaii. Great places to eat, with great views of the Pacific Ocean, and great shops. The only thing we had a slight disappointment in was the lack of sandy beaches. For the most part, La Jolla is what I consider a cliff/ocean town, which is beautiful, but at first we wanted the traditional sandy beach to spend the day on. But directly across from the Scripps Inn and our room, is a beautiful grassy area right on the edge of the ocean. In fact, this spot is highly sought after by people looking to have romantic photo shoots, or to actually get married in! So, this spot, right at the cliff's edge, is where we set up our chairs and enjoyed our time. Scripps also loans out beach umbrellas, chairs (we brought our own), and other beach fun paraphernalia. All in all, our stay at Scripps Inn was amazing. Every staff member made us feel welcome and more than just a guest. With everything you could need within walking distance (including Dukes, THE greatest restaurant ever), this is a place we'll be returning to many more times. They have special rates during certain times of the year, but even at their regular rates, it's well worth the stay! read more

Stayed in this lovely little inn last week (6 days, 5 nights) - what a lovely spot. Hotel is located right on the water, like right next to exquisite waterfront. Love that you can hear the waves as you sleep. It is situated in a very quiet part of LaJolla and has a lovely view. Walkable to the childrens pool area and you can see the seals! Reasonable walking distance to restaurants and stores in fancy LaJolla. The manager Bryce, is very nice, and everyone was very welcoming. Dog friendly too (although I didn't get the small bag of treats that their website stated that we could expect at arrival) still nice that they just charge once for your dog per stay... and not every day like at some chain hotels. The room is very lovely, well appointed and the bathroom was very nice. I loved that there was a small dining table in the room and there was a fridge. A microwave would have been perfect, or a toaster, but it was great nonetheless. They have Keurigs in the rooms , and I love that. I loved the views, and the rooms but the walls are a bit thin, we could hear talking and the other tvs in the other rooms, which is interesting. The room was kept reasonably clean for the duration of our stay (except the floors, there were dust bunnies every where and it didn't appear that they had mopped or cleaned the floors for some time.) my only bugaboo about the place is the parking...the parking is tight. I am not a great "backer upper", so just know that going into this. I had some issues pulling out of a very tight spot. They charge 75/pet per stay and 16 a day for parking.. but WIFI is free (albeit slow, but its free) and they have a free continental breakfast which is nice so there are fees, but no crazy resort fees or anything like that. The views are worth the price alone. It's a very charming spot. Definitely going to be back! read more

I have been trying to get my cancellation refund now for a month and the hotel staff has been downright rude! The reason I cancelled is because they quoted one rate and then charged my credit card an additional $18 without my authorization. Ostensibly this was an unauthorized parking charge, which they could have called and requested I approve, but instead they send me on a wild goose chase. They agreed to a full refund, but they still have not processed it a month later. What a nightmare. Looks like a nice location, but I'll never book there now! read more

I can honestly say that in all of the hotels that I've stayed in over the years, Scripps Inn is the most beautlful and gracious hotel that I've ever stayed in. I want to say that everyone I dealt with was polite and friendly. The problem was that the prices are too high for what's offered. In addition, when I booked, I should have been told there was construction and could have made an informed decision to NOT stay there. Last 2 days were jackhammers and excavators and all prepping had been done long before I arrived so there was knowledge on their part withheld from me. Intentional? Don't know; just bad business. $327. PER night for a double room ( wanted a single) and $228 for a single is outlandish for this out-dated motel. Parking lot is main view and parking g is $18. per night. Outrageous! There's a Keurig coffee maker in kitchen but no outlet so you have to move the coffee maker to a rickety outlet near dinette. Same all over: outdated. For those prices-- not okay and I will not return. They reimbursed me for one night to single room ($228.) due to jackhammers at 7 am one morning and 8 am the other. I came for OCEAN and got loud noise. Garbage trucks, construction--dilapidated rooms-- I sure wouldn't want to be there in the summer: NO air conditioning! You've been warned! read more

Avoid this place! We booked a room that advertised as part of the room a shared patio. There was absolutely no sharing because a group took over the entire space and was loud all night. The office closes at 5pm so you can't call to complain to management. Also, the ceilings must be made of paper because we heard everything from the upstairs unit-it sounded like elephants bowling upstairs! Very difficult to sleep. Will not be back. read more

The place is nice and beachy (but not kitchy), and you can smell the ocean from your room. This is all fantastic. It's in over-priced La Jolla, so the rooms are accordingly over-priced (and I'm from the Bay Area, so I know over-priced, I'm not just being naive). But you know that going into it. Here are a few little negatives that added up to bump this down in the ratings: - If you say you're "steps from the beach" and your hotel pictures are all made to look like the ocean's at your front door, it's a disappointment when I show up and see that you're very motel-looking and you're actually across the street from the beach. I mean, you're still close. But that romantic get-away inn that you advertise? I've been there, and this is not it. - Please do not advertise "complimentary continental breakfast" when you've got a stack of local papers and a cafeteria tray of crusty-looking pastries in your closet-sized lobby (and our in-room coffee makers supplying the morning joe). We went out both mornings, not necessarily by choice, but we wanted some real food... - Don't charge me a ten dollars a day "parking fee"!! It's not like it was valet or that we were parking somewhere other than the small lot in front of the inn. We would have parked on the street had we known we were getting nickeled and dimed. If you know what to expect, this place certainly beats staying at a downtown hotel or an inn decorated to look like your aunt's farmhouse. I most likely won't go back given the price, but then again, maybe there aren't better options... read more

I was looking forward to staying at Scripps Inn because I like B&Bs and this one had such good reviews. This B&B was really just a small motel next to the ocean. Nice location with a view and all, but the breakfast wasn't even as good as what one would get at a Holiday Inn or Best Western. It advertises a continental breakfast which included dry pastries, granola, packaged dry oatmeal, juices and coffee. I just went to the store and picked up my own breakfast and fixed it in the room. My room was above the laundry room where the maid would start slamming the door each morning at 6:30. When I checked out the person behind the desk didn't even look at me or ask me how my stay was. So, not only was it very cold outside during my visit, but the staff was equally as cold. read more

Our first visit to San Diego and La Jolla was great a place to sleep. We had a wonderful long weekend here. The staff was really nice. The Inn was nice and cozy with the beach across the street. The family had a good time in the patio area. This provides us with gathering time in the morning and evenings for us. The Inn was in walking distances to most places so we left our cars in the numerous parking spots. We definitely will come back. read more

Amazing!! I searched so many places to stay for our vacation and I am so glad we decided on Scripps. You can't beat the location, absolutely beautiful views. Walked the ocean trail every morning. The shops and restaurants were all within walking distance, but far enough away that we didn't have to deal with touristy crowds. The staff was just amazing. So friendly and always went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. If you are looking to stay in La Jolla this is the place you want. read more
