I summer every year up in Pemaquid and finally stopped this year on the way by--this place is so amazingly clean, bright, and open--I knew the food had to be good--and it was! I ordered the sea food basket (clams, shrimp, haddock, and scallops) and they nicely let me order a half portion--it was delish! My only "complaint": I would suggest better cocktail sauce instead of Ken's and the onion rings were just ok. But I'll go back for seafood anytime! read more

We are relatively local and this is where we go when we have a craving for fried seafood. It's very fresh and not over cooked. The batter is not greasy and doesn't leave you feeling disgusting after you eat it. My family spend and I spend six weeks in Maine at the end of the summer each year. We always look forward to dinning at the Sea Basket at very least once a week, sometimes twice if friends visit. My wife has Celiacs disease which means she has to eat gluten free. That also means that finding fried seafood is a rarity... but sea basket can make most of their fried food gluten free so we stopped in to see what it was all about. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. She ordered gluten free fried clams, I got gluten free fried haddock (I can eat the regular stuff with gluten but got gluten free so we could share) and we also ordered gluten free onion rings. Everything was great! The onion rings were a particular highlight. They weren't just good for being gluten free, they were GREAT onion rings! The portions were huge - the large order of onion rings could've fed 4-5 people - and the clams and haddock were served on a big bed of French fries. We sat outside with our dog. The quality of the seafood here is excellent. It gets a three as I eat here occasionally and I find the breading a bit salty for my taste. It is excellent though and crispy just as I like. Lower the salt and I would give it 4 stars maybe even five. I often just get scallops or clams only on my way home from boating. They also have chowders, lobster stew, interesting specials, crab rolls and lobster. None of which are too salty. Only the fried fish. Great service, friendly, clean. Not worth the money. Just got a clam basket and was completely disappointed. The clams were chewy and overcooked and not fresh, fries were clearly from frozen - completely soaked in oil, and they don't even make their own tartar sauce. Haven't been to the Sea Basket in a few years and now I remember why. Pricey for what you get- small baskets look large because there is a roll (buttered? More like margarined) under the fish (or shrimp in my case), soggy fries. My wife did like her haddock but $1.69 for a medium coke with no refill??? The shrimp was mostly breading. Doesn't come close to comparing with the Windjammer in Rochester,NH. And even the touristy, schlock Taste of Maine, 5 minutes down Route 1 has better fried food and much better prices. I learned my lesson (again!). I received a pleasant response from John, the owner and I have tried to reply but Yelp's response form is persnickety! What I said was: "As I said, the haddock was fine. The shrimp was not. It WAS heavily battered. Maybe your fry-chef was having a bad day. And there was nothing on the board saying that refills were free, so I assumed they weren't (usually restaurants post that refills are or are not free). After being buried under fries, it was hard to tell if it were butter or margarine on the roll. It tasted like margarine." But it wasn't a bad meal. My wife really liked her haddock. It just seemed a bit overpriced for what you got. read more

We made our twice a year trip up router one yesterday (once before tourist season and once after tourist season) to the Sea Basket and had a wonderful experience. No long lines and the staff was extremely friendly and presented a good attitude. The food was very fresh, not overcooked, and the portions were reasonable. My only issue with the portions is the seafood is placed on top of a pile of fries and a roll which makes it look bigger than it is. I am not a fan of making food appear like it is a larger portion than it is... That said, the seafood was fresh, the fries decent, and the overall experience was very good. We will head back over the bridge in the fall and do it again. read more

I come to the sea basket every year. It's not too far from the house we stay at and the food here is pretty good. I really enjoy the fried scallops and fried haddock and fried clams. You just have to be in the mood for all the grease. Also, it's not expensive for what it is (seafood) but just note it's not cheap. And while they did renovate the interior this year, it's always going to be the restaurant facing the highway with somewhat of a cafeteria, homey look so it's not incredibly scenic or anything and the ladies who work there are not the friendliest. They're kind of rough around the edges and make it clear they're here to get paid for doing their job and frown like it's a sport (and they're winning). I got some dirty looks when I asked for a to go container. We spent about $80 on these fried goods, you would think this was no big deal but I actually got dirty looks from the staff and it felt like I was stealing when I insisted that I needed one. Ugh. After hearing multiple Mainers, including my inlaws, rave about the onion rings and the fried seafood at Seabasket, I was looking forward to some greasy goodness. I must say I was a bit underwhelmed. Yes, the seafood was fresh. Yes, the breading was crisp. Yes, I know seafood is pricey these days. My fiance and I split the large assorted seafood basket - which seemed high to me at 20-odd dollars. The fried scallops, shrimp, haddock, and clams came piled atop a boatload of french fries, with some coleslaw and a huge, flaky biscuit on the side. Did anyone say carbs? My stomach still feels tight at the memory of that greasy seafood that turned to rock in my gut just minutes after I ate it. I had less than half the serving, and skipped the biscuit and fries. The onion rings were, indeed, fantastic. The scallops were fresh, juicy, and very flavorful. But the heavy and greasy breading overwhelmed them. The cafeteria-style booths and tables were all clean, and the bathroom was spic and span. There was a small but grassy outdoor picnic table area, albeit with a view of Rt. 1. This place isn't fancy, but who cares - it's not trying to be. Just a back-to-basics fast-food joint with a widespread reputation for providing great, fresh lobster rolls and fried seafood. And that's what it does...but it's not for me. Minus 1 star for the heaviness and greasiness of the breading. 4 stars - "Yay! My family is a fan, even if I'm not." Edit because of owner's rebuttal: First, it was not 30 minutes later. Second - I DID NOT ASK FOR A REFUND! All we wanted was an acknowledgement that you would look into the issue. Even here you are totally dismissing us. That is so disappointing. And third...what are you even TALKING about in your sarcastic "thanks for another review" - this is the FIRST review I have EVER written. All we wanted was to be treated with respect. That's it. Oh - and it was NOT 30 minutes later. It was about 8 minutes from receiving food to walking out the door. ALL I wanted was for the cashier to take a message to the manager that there may have been something wrong with the fish - by the time I left I was feeling like I was berated for even suggesting it. That manager came around the corner with FIRE in his eyes. Had I been somewhere by myself I'd have feared for my safety! I don't know why he got SO mad about this but it's obvious he is. This could have been SO easily avoided had HIS WORKER not offered a refund. ALL I WANTED WAS AN APOLOGY and I still have not got that....wow. This place used to be THE place for seafood on the Maine coast. But something went wrong when the new owner took over. Small changes at first - changes in tartar sauce brand, then adding liquor to the menu (why was that even needed?!), changes to the fries. Now, yesterday, a friend and i went to lunch. Shared a haddock basket. It was literally the WORST haddock we have EVER tasted. My friend used to own a seafood business (selling fresh seafood) so she KNOWS what seafood is supposed to be like. And I've lived on the coast of Maine all my life and definitely know seafood. This haddock was either undercooked or bad. We talked to the lady at the front - just simply told her that her management should check on the haddock as something seemed off - we were VERY polite - did not complain, did not ask for money back. SHE offered money back and said she was getting the manager. The manager (owner!) came out and was VERY defensive and all he would repeat is "I just cut that this morning". I don't CARE if you just cut it this morning - something was wrong with it - I was being polity - *I* had not asked for a refund...it was offered to me by an employee. Not only would he not give money back but he treated us with disrespect and acted as though we were lying. Again - it had NOTHING to do with money back - we didn't go up to the counter for that reason - we wanted them aware that something was wrong - the lady at the counter is who said the manger will refund us!!! My friend was very sick feeling all day and ended up getting VERY sick (vomiting bad) from it. And no one can claim that it was not due to that -it was the only thing she had eaten all day - she could not eat after. If the manager/owner had simply been kind to us this review never would have happened. But bad food AND bad service. Uh, no way. You do NOT treat people with disrespect after serving bad food!!! Again - I did not even request a refund - all I wanted was an apology and an "I will definitely look into this". Instead I got an attitude and he said no less than 8 times in 2 minutes "I don't know what to tell you. I just cut it this morning". Wow. Just wow. Do yourself a favor - travel a bit and find a GOOD seafood restaurant. The Sea Basket is no longer good. read more

A place not to be missed or overlooked on Rt 1. $13 for an order of fried clams seems a bit steep. But it is worth every penny, since many lesser places serve an inferior product for not much less. I was driving home alone, back to MA, and had to keep moving. So an order of clam was perfect: just pop in a clam. Would have preferred hot sauce or tartar sauce, but that would have been, literally, an accicent waiting to happen. Naked clams, so to speak, and each one was as tasty as the last. Mouthfilling, full bodied, crunchy. 24 hours after the last one, I relived the experience with pleasure and can't wait to hit the Sea Basket on my next trip north. read more

WICKED GOOD! This has got to be my favorite seafood eatery in all of Maine! The fried food is light, crisp, and full of flavor. A must stop every time we come home. Fried seafood done exceptionally well. Surprisingly hard to find.

Delicious food, but as far as the lobster rolls go they rank a B+. I ate there last summer and again yesterday to get a fair sampling of on and off season fare. They lose a star for their departure from a pure lobster roll and a couple of other infractions. 1) Lobster rolls should be served in a grilled, side split hot dog bun, not a toasted sub roll. The sub rolls they use stray from the ideal LTB ratio- Lobster to Bun (or bread). There is way too much bread masking the lobster. 2) Too much tail meat and not enough claws & knuckles, but still perfect mayo balance and darn tasty. 3) Green leaf lettuce? If you must adulterate a lobster roll with lettuce, use shredded iceberg. It is flavorless and doesn't interfere with the delicate balance of it all. 4) if you sell a lobster roll, you should sell a crab roll. They are always cheaper and afford a good lobster alternative when you are down on your ducats. 5) Price- Sea Basket charges too much for their location. $16.99 for a less than perfect, not so big lobster roll is too much. You get about 20% more of textbook roll at Morse's for $13.99. If Sea Basket were on a dock or the water the price would be justified. Enough complaining! The lobster meat was sweet and freshly shucked with visible tomalley green than ensures you aren't eating canadian fresh/frozen. Their fried food is spot on. The fried shrimp I had was perfectly brown and crisp with a well seasoned coating. Yesterday, they offered a native Maine shrimp and corn chowder special that was dee-lish (not a Rachel Ray fan). They are very convenient ,off Route 1 and the staff is always cheery. The place is extremely clean and tidy. The fact that they are year round is a plus too. read more

I agree with some reviewers that the price is a little high for the amount of meat you actually get, but this was expected and not different from other, similar restaurants. Truly, the freshest, tastiest fried seafood in Midcoast ME. Not that cheap, but who cares? They offer some soups and other non-seafood snacks for those fools who won't eat seafood that you might have tagging along in your party. Comfy with kids, or without.
