Really disappointing dining experience from start to finish. The hostess appeared visibly stressed while training a new employee (who, to her credit, was polite). Despite having a reservation, we were abruptly told to wait in line. The hostess then made an unnecessary, snarky comment to the trainee about our party, which felt unprofessional. Service did not improve once seated. Our waitress, Mae, forgot the glass of wine I ordered. When I followed up about 15 minutes later while placing our food order, she responded curtly that she had already heard me. Food service was equally frustrating. A runner delivered my meal along with the wrong dish for my 10-year-old daughter. I clarified the mistake, and both plates were taken back. About 10 minutes later, the same incorrect meals were returned. At that point, my entrée--a $38 Chilean sea bass portion that was already quite small--was likely cold, and I wasn't comfortable eating while my child still didn't have her correct meal. For a restaurant operating in March, well before peak tourist season, this level of disorganization and lack of service is concerning. Overall, not a good experience. First, the "Gluten Free & Vegetarian" menu boldly promises that vegetarian items will be marked with a (V). Fantastic! Love that! One small detail: none of the items on the menu had a V. Not one. It felt like a scavenger hunt where the treasure never existed. My husband and I had a good laugh about that. As a vegetarian, my grand feast consisted of a Caesar salad, baked potato, and the vegetable of the day (which we were told was broccolini). What arrived was asparagus that appeared to have just completed a marathon through the Sahara. Dry, tired, and clearly ready for retirement. The server kindly removed it from the bill, which I appreciated. The baked potato was actually good... but only while the cheese and sour cream lasted. Once those heroes disappeared, the potato was left to face the world alone. My husband ordered the blackened seafood platter at the server's recommendation. Unfortunately the seafood had the texture of something that had been negotiating with the grill for far too long. Imagine seafood jerky, but sadder. The bright spot of the evening was our server, who was friendly, attentive, kept our water glasses full, and handled the asparagus situation with grace. So if you're looking for great service and a menu that unintentionally doubles as a comedy prop, you may enjoy the experience. We went here for Mother's Day as treat the Saturday before Mother's Day to treat our Moms! They thoroughly enjoyed it! Service, wasn't bad overall we rate it 7/10. Front desk to check in 10/10. Our server Brielle tweaked that rating a little bit because although she was very thorough; I don't if she's just use to fast pace serving or what. We would've just appreciated it if she slowed down to take our orders and when we asked for stuff, if it didn't come off so pushy and hurry hurry type vibe. This place I will say is definitely a nice place for date. We had the option to eat outside with the beautiful view but decided to dine inside because of the wait. We were pleasantly surprised that they offered us hush puppies as a light appetizer which is such a southern thing to do. The grouper could have used a tad bit more seasoning but still was good and properly cooked. The fries with my marinated chicken was definitely the star of the show. Keep in my they have like 3 different menus depending on the time you show up. Our server was very attentive and made sure we always had refills when we were running low. This is a place where you go to for the view and not the food. We came here with a reservation to celebrate my birthday but honestly was still a bit stuffed from our late lunch. Complimentary hush puppies are decent. Seafood platter was a bit disappointing. There wasn't a lot of seafood on the plate. I think they have this labeled as an entree. It's lacking flavor too. The hummingbird cake is interesting. Never had anything like it! It has banana, pineapple, pecans and cream cheese frosting. The first few bites are good but it is a massive slice and my husband and I couldn't finish. If you come here expecting spectacular food, you will be disappointed. My husband's boss brought us here for dinner one weeknight evening. His wife joined us and (of course) the company was paying. I believe he had made a reservation as we were seated immediately upon our arrival. We had a slight ocean view. Our waiter brought us our menus and water. Everyone but me ordered Surf & Turf ($48 each)...I didn't particularly want shrimp so I just ordered the filet ($47). When the food came out, we ALL had surf & turf. I'm not sure if it was an honest mistake or if the waiter thought adding 6 shrimp for a $1 was a good deal (which it is)...but what if I had been allergic to shellfish? I didn't say anything though. The steak was just ok. It came with one side which was just OK as well. I think that I would have been even more disappointed if I had been paying the bill rather than my husband's employer. I had looked at the drink menu online before going and was very interested in trying the Blue Mule but it was not on the menu when we got ready to order. I asked the waiter and he had no idea what I was talking about. So I got a classic mule and it was really good. We got a second round of drinks and the waiter offered to make my mule spicy...which was just adding fresh jalapenos, but that was quite tasty! We finished our meal but were not quite ready to end the evening so we went over the bar that's also part of the restaurant. There I had an espresso martini which was not as good as the mule but better than OK. I wonder if we should have ordered seafood at the Sea Captains House? The bathrooms were lovely and quite clean so they had that going for them as well. Overall I was underwhelmed. The drinks and company were excellent though! read more

Nov. 2025 Sea Captain -- My wife and I were in town and decided to stop in for one of our usual visits. We sat at the bar (as we often do), had a drink, ordered some She-Crab soup and hush puppies, and shared a fish meal with rice. The bartender was very nice and took good care of us. The soup was very good, as always -- though, for the price, I felt it could've had a little more crab meat. The hush puppies were good too. For the main course, we got a pecan-crusted fish, but honestly it was a little heavy-handed: the crust was all over -- deep-fried -- instead of being simply broiled with the pecan topping just on top. The sauce helped a lot, though, and the fish was tasty; the rice was just rice. Next time we go, we'll probably try a different main course along with the soup. read more

I really really want to love this place. The ambiance is wonderful, the view can't be beat, but the food has been inconsistant each time I visit and more often horrible, less often good. The she crab soup and hush puppies can't be beat, they're always fabulous. The fish dishes though are usually terrible. The fish is overcooked and very dried out, borderline inedible, definitely nothing close to enjoyable. I've tried multiple times because as I've said, as a local, I really want to like here, just for the experience of dining with the beautiful ocean view. But many of my friends have unfortunately had the same experience with the fish so I know it's not me. The kitchen really needs to learn how not to overcook and dry out the fish entrees. Our server was a sweet heart but I unfortunately forgot his name - order gentleman.. so kind. We called to make a reservation and they do not take them for parties over 6, but told us to arrive before 6 and we would be able to get a table. We were seated immediately outside when we arrived. We had another outstanding meal this year when visiting Myrtle Beach with our brother and his wife. We were seated on the enclosed patio overlooking the water, and it was beautiful! My husband and I both had a cup of their she-crab soup. It was thick, creamy, and delicious, with chunks of crab and a hint of nutmeg. For our entrees, he had the Cioppino and I had the Avocado Seafarer, both repeats from our last visit. I liked the simplicity of the Avocado Seafarer -- it was healthy and yet very tasty. The Cioppino had a rich broth and was full of seafood. Both were winners! I asked our server if the bar could make an elderflower gimlet, and it was outstanding. My husband's Minty Mule was good as well. Our server went out of the way to make us feel welcomed and to accommodate our requests (like my brother-in-law's request for vinegar for his fries, and my elderflower gimlet). She was delightful, and made our experience special. Parking was a breeze, with two (free) lots just across the street from the restaurant. The large dining area has plenty of natural light and looks out to the ocean. There are several levels and it was just starting to fill up at 5pm. The food was good, especially the fresh fish and hush puppies and the restaurant is beautiful. However the service left a lot to be desired and was bad enough to really ruin the dining experience. My whole table ordered soup to start, but only one was brought out with about a fifteen minute wait before the others came out - just really awkward. We found out after we ordered that there were specials we weren't told about which was disappointing. None of us got the side substitutions we asked for. It took forever to get our second round of drinks. When we finally asked for the check the waitress informed us that all the checks were combined for the section and she needed to get the manager to sort it out (which took a long time). Really a shame because the location is beautiful and the food was good! Maybe just an off night service wise but it was pretty disappointing read more

I was glad to find a non-buffet seafood spot in Myrtle Beach, but this was a letdown. The hush puppies were good, and the crab cake was just okay -- a bit too much mayo. The Chilean sea bass was inedible: chewy, fatty, and mostly solid fat in the middle. The manager apologized and gave 60% off just the sea bass, but I still ended up paying about $15 for a few bites of vegetables. To top it off, I later heard my server mention a snapper special I was never told about. Completely unprofessional (Lack of honesty) and subpar food. We arrived shortly before 4pm. The hostess seated us and provided us with the lunch menu. Server was slow and when she arrived to take our order (at 4:01) she took away our lunch menus and told us the hostess gave us the wrong menu and that we needed to order off the more expensive dinner menu. I asked what time lunch ended? She said 3:30. When we left the building, the large outdoor sign said Lunch 11-4. Since we were there before 4pm, it appears the hostess did give us the correct menu. I highly question the honesty of the server who took away our lunch menus and said lunch ended at 3:30 when the sign outside says 4:00. We ordered the jambalaya. We have been frequent customers of Sea Captain's House for years. We tell others that it has been the best restaurant in the area. However, the changes that have been made are so far away from what this restaurant was famous for, it is a shame. The famous seafood platter that had a little of everything is no longer an option. The size of the shrimp is not about half of what it was. Your meal no longer comes with a salad ( if you choose), but costs extra. You can only pick one side as the other one cannot be substituted. And I'm not sure how Collards are the best side for a seafood platter. The baked potato was just okay, not hot but warm enough to melt the butter. Honestly, the best thing we ate was the hush puppies. Waitress was nice but kept telling me how change was good when I pointed out what was no longer available on the menu. Not always. The waitress was satisfactory and the ordering process was quick and easy. Now for what we did not care for. The food portions were small which is typical for a higher end restaurant. I got the Avocado Seafarer Salad which was very small and there were very few 'greens' but a nice portion of crab although the dressing lacked flavor. My wife ordered the Chilean Sea Bass which was very very bland and a small portion as well. Overall we feel that there are other restaurants that offer much more flavor for a better value. read more

We have loved the Sea Captain's House for ever! We always have a wonderful dinner, and as everyone already knows, they have the most picturesque backyard to take wonderful pictures. However the quality of the food has been declining the last few years. 4/22/26 we had lunch there. My wife and I were very disappointed with the food. Hostess was flustered easily, servers unclear as to who was supposed to wait on our party of 6. (Marie? eventually took care of us, she was fine considering). Sat at table in bar, very noisy (no one sitting at bar). Never had scallops that were NOT seared, looked overcooked boiled, unappealing. Still eating while vacuuming and general clean up going on throughout facility while patrons still seated (this is employee work that is ALWAYS done AFTER patrons leave). Bartender clanging beer grills around, turns off TV (some of us were watching a hockey game, since that's where we got seated), kind of given the bums rush out the door. Someone came up at end of meal to speak to us (did not introduce himself, Mngr / owner??)we expressed some of the concerns with meal, but really just wanted to leave at this point. He did not really come across as concerned with problems overall. Should have offered to make up at next visit or something. Doubtful this place survives the summer season with their "menu change" as they told us. Families with kids who'll eat anything might be their target customer, fine dining, nah. I ordered the fried green tomatoes and the stuffed flounder while my husband had the swordfish (catch of the day) and shecrab soup. Every dish was magical-all extremely fresh and flavorful. The setting is gorgeous and the service was first class. We live in Las Vegas and can say that this restaurant beats out the finest offerings in our town.
