Just back again to remind you to not sleep on Sea Captain's House. It is a mainstay on our restaurant list for Myrtle Beach. This year, in thinking ahead, we made reservations to ensure we'd have a table at a time convenient for us without a wait. When we arrived at our time, we were immediately seated at what I think is one of the best tables, a little higher up in the restaurant, beside a full wall of windows with a perfect view of the beach. Absolute heaven! As usual, I began with a margarita and She Crab soup. Their soup is my favorite. The hushpuppies that they bring to the table and the butter that accompanies them cannot be beat. Hubs had the shrimp and grits and he loved it. It reminds him of his mom's which is the highest compliment he could ever give. This time, not being super hungry, I tried the Avocado Seafarer salad, and I will most definitely be getting it again. We never fail to have great and kind service at this restaurant. We were on a beach adventure- just visiting beaches from Myrtle upward. With a quick online reservation, we were in and seated in no time at all, when we anticipated a wait of some sort due to how busy things had been in the area that evening. The waiter was amazing- very accommodating and friendly. There was a live musician in the outdoor area that was great and audience oriented. We had the Summer Breeze drink, which was delicious! That was all lovely, but the food was absolutely phenomenal! We didn't realize hush puppies were a provided table item, so that was a pleasant surprise. They were fresh and their butter accompaniment made them even better! We split the mussels appetizer and the shrimp and crab papardelle entree. "Sea Captain's House" is a breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaurant right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It has been there for a long long time. We have been going to this establishment for over 35 years. It never disappoints. It's an easy walk from a multitude of resorts and a very easy drive from all of them. It always has plenty of easy parking. Our favorite thing to do is go for an early breakfast. They open at 7:30 am. The dunes and gardens between the full glass wall in the back and the beach is has a fantastic view. It is so peaceful and calming. I love to sit with a cup of morning coffee and just look out at the ocean. Sunrise over the Atlantic is marvelous. If you ever vacation in Myrtle Beach make sure "Sea Captain's House" is one of your stops. read more

We had reservations on a busy Thursday night because there were five of us for dinner. Most of the rooms look out over the Atlantic, which is lovely. They asked if we wanted to sit outside - the tables looked like plastic, plus it was hot and windy - so, no thanks. We were seated in the bar which worked out well because it was much quieter than the din in the other rooms. Our server was great, drinks were good, but I think we were all a little disappointed with our food. Pasta with seafood desperately needed seasoning. I had fried flounder, mostly because it was advertised with a side of collard greens. This review is based on my wife's recent visit here for dinner. Bonus was the young man about 20 performing live music which she really enjoyed and said made her dining experience even better. The complimentary hush puppies she said we great and usually she is not a big fan of them. Other highlights were the salad and coconut cake. She ordered the pasta dish and said it was good but regretted she just didn't get the fried flounder and shrimp combination. I went here during off season so I can't attest to how it is when all the visitors arrive. Our wait was just a few minutes. They sat us in a beautiful enclosed porch area. We had a lovely server named Ariel. Super friendly and efficient. The restaurant is very pretty and comfortable. We enjoyed the views. Hushpuppies were so yummy! Everyone enjoyed their food. The hummingbird cake is interesting. Never had anything like it! It has banana, pineapple, pecans and cream cheese frosting. She said Prime Ribeye, so we ordered 2. It was not prime. Tough, chewy, overcooked with "smashed potatoes" which consisted of dry overly cooked whole potatoes that had nothing on them. My husband's boss brought us here for dinner one weeknight evening. His wife joined us and (of course) the company was paying. I believe he had made a reservation as we were seated immediately upon our arrival. We had a slight ocean view. Our waiter brought us our menus and water. Everyone but me ordered Surf & Turf ($48 each)...I didn't particularly want shrimp so I just ordered the filet ($47). When the food came out, we ALL had surf & turf. I'm not sure if it was an honest mistake or if the waiter thought adding 6 shrimp for a $1 was a good deal (which it is)...but what if I had been allergic to shellfish? I didn't say anything though. The steak was just ok. It came with one side which was just OK as well. I think that I would have been even more disappointed if I had been paying the bill rather than my husband's employer. I had looked at the drink menu online before going and was very interested in trying the Blue Mule but it was not on the menu when we got ready to order. I asked the waiter and he had no idea what I was talking about. So I got a classic mule and it was really good. We got a second round of drinks and the waiter offered to make my mule spicy...which was just adding fresh jalapenos, but that was quite tasty! We finished our meal but were not quite ready to end the evening so we went over the bar that's also part of the restaurant. There I had an espresso martini which was not as good as the mule but better than OK. I wonder if we should have ordered seafood at the Sea Captains House? Nov. 2025 Sea Captain -- My wife and I were in town and decided to stop in for one of our usual visits. We sat at the bar (as we often do), had a drink, ordered some She-Crab soup and hush puppies, and shared a fish meal with rice. The bartender was very nice and took good care of us. The soup was very good, as always -- though, for the price, I felt it could've had a little more crab meat. The hush puppies were good too. For the main course, we got a pecan-crusted fish, but honestly it was a little heavy-handed: the crust was all over -- deep-fried -- instead of being simply broiled with the pecan topping just on top. The sauce helped a lot, though, and the fish was tasty; the rice was just rice. Next time we go, we'll probably try a different main course along with the soup. read more

Came here with my friend (we were from out of town) on our first night in for a nice dinner. We were seated by a window which was lovely to have a nice view. Our server was a sweet heart but I unfortunately forgot his name - order gentleman.. so kind. We called to make a reservation and they do not take them for parties over 6, but told us to arrive before 6 and we would be able to get a table. We were seated immediately outside when we arrived. We came to Sea Captain's House excited for a nice oceanfront dinner... and left with a new appreciation for moisture in food. First, the "Gluten Free & Vegetarian" menu boldly promises that vegetarian items will be marked with a (V). Fantastic! Love that! One small detail: none of the items on the menu had a V. Not one. It felt like a scavenger hunt where the treasure never existed. My husband and I had a good laugh about that. As a vegetarian, my grand feast consisted of a Caesar salad, baked potato, and the vegetable of the day (which we were told was broccolini). What arrived was asparagus that appeared to have just completed a marathon through the Sahara. Dry, tired, and clearly ready for retirement. The server kindly removed it from the bill, which I appreciated. The baked potato was actually good... but only while the cheese and sour cream lasted. Once those heroes disappeared, the potato was left to face the world alone. My husband ordered the blackened seafood platter at the server's recommendation. Unfortunately the seafood had the texture of something that had been negotiating with the grill for far too long. Imagine seafood jerky, but sadder. The bright spot of the evening was our server, who was friendly, attentive, kept our water glasses full, and handled the asparagus situation with grace. So if you're looking for great service and a menu that unintentionally doubles as a comedy prop, you may enjoy the experience. We had another outstanding meal this year when visiting Myrtle Beach with our brother and his wife. We were seated on the enclosed patio overlooking the water, and it was beautiful! My husband and I both had a cup of their she-crab soup. It was thick, creamy, and delicious, with chunks of crab and a hint of nutmeg. For our entrees, he had the Cioppino and I had the Avocado Seafarer, both repeats from our last visit. I liked the simplicity of the Avocado Seafarer -- it was healthy and yet very tasty. The Cioppino had a rich broth and was full of seafood. Both were winners! I asked our server if the bar could make an elderflower gimlet, and it was outstanding. My husband's Minty Mule was good as well. Our server went out of the way to make us feel welcomed and to accommodate our requests (like my brother-in-law's request for vinegar for his fries, and my elderflower gimlet). She was delightful, and made our experience special. Parking was a breeze, with two (free) lots just across the street from the restaurant. From the host getting us in immediately, during rush hour, the server Lily connecting w/ my daughter above and beyond, the incredible hush puppies and butter, great bartenders, appetizers (the she crab soup & bang bang shrimp), the fresh catch w/ red pepper sauce, ample dessert and unbelievable views... it's 7 stars, not 5. It is expensive but you get what you pay for. My family had a very memorable visit and we could see why it was packed. I was glad to find a non-buffet seafood spot in Myrtle Beach, but this was a letdown. The hush puppies were good, and the crab cake was just okay -- a bit too much mayo. The Chilean sea bass was inedible: chewy, fatty, and mostly solid fat in the middle. The manager apologized and gave 60% off just the sea bass, but I still ended up paying about $15 for a few bites of vegetables. To top it off, I later heard my server mention a snapper special I was never told about. Really disappointing dining experience from start to finish. The hostess appeared visibly stressed while training a new employee (who, to her credit, was polite). Despite having a reservation, we were abruptly told to wait in line. The hostess then made an unnecessary, snarky comment to the trainee about our party, which felt unprofessional. Service did not improve once seated. Our waitress, Mae, forgot the glass of wine I ordered. When I followed up about 15 minutes later while placing our food order, she responded curtly that she had already heard me. Food service was equally frustrating. A runner delivered my meal along with the wrong dish for my 10-year-old daughter. I clarified the mistake, and both plates were taken back. About 10 minutes later, the same incorrect meals were returned. At that point, my entrée--a $38 Chilean sea bass portion that was already quite small--was likely cold, and I wasn't comfortable eating while my child still didn't have her correct meal. For a restaurant operating in March, well before peak tourist season, this level of disorganization and lack of service is concerning. Overall, not a good experience. I really really want to love this place. The ambiance is wonderful, the view can't be beat, but the food has been inconsistant each time I visit and more often horrible, less often good. The she crab soup and hush puppies can't be beat, they're always fabulous. The fish dishes though are usually terrible. The fish is overcooked and very dried out, borderline inedible, definitely nothing close to enjoyable. I've tried multiple times because as I've said, as a local, I really want to like here, just for the experience of dining with the beautiful ocean view. But many of my friends have unfortunately had the same experience with the fish so I know it's not me. The kitchen really needs to learn how not to overcook and dry out the fish entrees.
