Came here on a Friday night with my family of four. Very classy looking place. It is the shape of a boat since the dining room goes to a tip almost. As you walk into the dining room, you can see the kitchen, pretty interesting. The service is good. We had Antonio. He kept walking by the table so if we ever needed him we could just call him. Now the food was amazing. You start off with complementary bread with an flavored oil dip. It was so good, the bread was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. We ordered fried calamari and clam casino for appetizers. The clam casino was super good. If you like bacon, which who doesn't, then you would love this. The taste of bacon was such a complement to the clam. I was not a fan of the fried calamari because I thought it was chewy but the sauce it came with was super amazing. It's like a marina sauce but with different herbs, taste like something they make themselves. Onto the entrees, we had the rodizio, shrimp&rice casserole, and the porterhouse steak. The short rib for the rodizio was really good, it had so much flavor. The shrimp and rice casserole was amazing. Tastes like paella almost but with shrimp. It is served in a little rice pot, definitely enough for two or even three people. The porterhouse steak was cooked to perfection. My father said it was the top five best steaks he's ever had. They cater to large groups, lots of families celebrating here and the view and outdoor seating and bar are perfectly situated. Really great environment the staff seem very happy and are very helpful. I was told to go to the wrong floor multiple times for a private event but the staff ended up getting me to the right room. However, the food was okay. The chicken marsala really didn't have much taste but the steak and rice was amazing. What can I say??? This restaurant is simply EXQUISITE. I enjoy everything about it. I must say this place has really caught my eye. Each visit is always accommodating to me. They seem to always fulfill my request with entrees that aren't listed on the menu. I love everything about the location, the view and most of all the layout. If you are looking for a restaurant that's on the higher end I would suggest Seabra's for a great dining experience. The reason why I choose 4 Stars because once during brunch the chef refused to do sautéed mushrooms when I get them all the time other than that service is impeccable and the servers always so accommodating. We have been eating at the Armory for years. It's always a good experience for couples, families, and groups of all sizes. The portions are generous, the service is always good to great and the view of the boats sailing by is a unique experience even if you just want to sit at the outside bar and have drinks with friends. The din is social without being obnoxious. Yesterday was particularly good and we ate outside. The service here is consistently good but the wait staff can come off a little cold at times but are accurate, prompt, and attentive. Yesterday our waiter was Fernando and he brought a level of warmth to our dinner. His recommendations were spot on and my 36 oz steak was one of the best that I have had. Normally we don't have dessert but Fernando coached us to look at the menu and we are glad that we did. I had the "Italian", YUM my wife had a cappuccino, and we shared a tiramisu. Pretty much every entree portion is good enough for two or more...so it is actually a good deal as well. What the ??? Went Friday night at 7pm and asked to sit outside. Got a great table, had water poured by who we would later (much later) find out was our waiter (not even "hi, I'll be you waiter"), and then sat, and sat and sat for a solid 15+minutes until he came back and asked if we wanted drinks. I smiled. We ordered cocktails and 2 very expensive appetizers. Well, about 10 minutes later, one of the appetizers came out and another 10 minutes later, our drinks FINALLY came to the table. Oh, did I mention I ordered my martini on the rocks and got it straight up? Did I also mention I aked for salt and pepper 2 times before I finally got it? Anyway, after our appetizers and another drink each (this time I "repeated" on the rocks numerous times), I presented my credit card to whatever our waiters name was and when I looked, it was a $220 bill. An 18% tip was already included. Who the he'll wanted to leave this guy an 18% tip? That was definitely not deserved or earned and it was just WRONG! A tip should be MY choice. And I usually tip 20 to 25% on most occasions when the service is good. In this case,, I would have left a 10% tip because this is the way we were treated. Restaurants usually include tips for larger parties but never saw this for only 2. Damn. I used to love this place but last night is making me wonder if I'd ever return. read more

I asked to add chicken to a sandwich and i'll pay whatever you want.. the waiter said: "They won't make it for u" ... I told him I didn't care how much it cost... he went back and asked.. came back and he said: "the kitchen won't make it for you" Ok Mr/Mrs. owner.... why wouldn't you sell a priceless sandwich if you had the chance... i was willing to pay $25 for a basic chicken sandwich the way I like it... It is my sincere hope that your experience at The Armory is a lot more pleasant than the one I encountered. Wife and I came for lunch on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we were greeted and seated promptly. I ordered a Whole Snapper and my wife ordered Sea Bass. Our food arrived and it was presented well, however the taste was bland and dull. We are not the sort of people who complain. Well, that was until I got to the totally uncooked part. I called the waiter over and showed him very discreetly that the fish was raw. Hands on his hips he started to argue that I was wrong, and that it was the sauce. I showed him that clearly the fish was raw and there is no sauce in sight. He pointed at the fish and said Well you ate some. At this point I was frustrated. I thanked him and he walked away. I waited for my wife to finish when the waiter approached me again and said he only worked there and if I wanted him to take the fish back to the kitchen and have it cooked to which I said no. He then said if I wanted to speak to the manager and I said yes please. About 10 minutes later the manger showed up. I could not see his reaction, but my wife saw him getting agitated as the waiter told him what happened. He approached my table and asked me what was wrong. I showed him the fish. So, you want me to cook it again for you, to which I said no. He picked up the plate and said do you want something else, and again I said no. He walked off, no apology no nothing. Waiter brought the check after I asked for it. They did not include the offending Snapper in the final tally. All in all, it was a perfect combination of bad service and even worse food. For some reason, family and friends keep having events at this restaurant for over 25 years. It must be the location on the water and decent party rooms upstairs. The food is absolutely disgusting. We were at a party upstairs and ALL of the chaffing dishes were cold and bland. Years ago at least the appetizers were edible but everything was terrible this time and it continuously goes down hill. Obviously you can't complain at a party, as not to hurt anyone's feelings and ruin their event. Unfortunately I have to attend another party here this week, in the actual dining area. The prices are astronomical for old, poor quality badly prepared food. Let's see if anything will actually be edible. There are SO many amazing Portuguese/seafood restaurants in the area, I would definitely stay away from this place. The property also looks old and dated, even though it was renovated after hurricane sandy. The drinks are also very expensive and very basic, so there's no wins here. Do yourself a favor and go to the Portuguese Manor down the street, or any of the amazing genuine restaurants in Newark. Go to Salt in New Brunswick for seafood. They have an actual chef, FRESH seafood, delicious drinks and and ambiance. read more

I had mixed feelings and some apprehension while looking up this restaurant due to the mixed reviews. But the man wanted to go and since he was picking up the tab, why the heck not. Within 5 minutes of arrival, we got bread with a garlic-infused olive oil. Bread was soft and the oil was delish. We ordered the shrimp in garlic sauce. It has a nice heat to it and the shrimp tasted fresh. The man ordered crab-stuffed tilapia with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. I ordered fried soft-shell crabs with Spanish potatoes (basically, homemade potato chips) and steamed veggies and the boy ordered shrimp and rice casserole. The serving sizes were huge. I got 3 pretty good-sized crabs and the casserole was enough for 4 people. Everything was seasoned just right and cooked just right. No complaints as far as the food quality, taste and service. It's a little pricey but I think worth it. We will definitely be back. read more

If it's a paella for two please put in a whole lobster not just half. While the flavor was good the seafood was lacking....We decided to try this on the recommendation of a work colleague and we will never go again....In addition the choice of music by the bar is reprehensible....foul language in the choice of music disgusting....I know this is not the owners fault definitely management needs to step in an correct this...I would never recommend this establishment to families. read more

First let me say it's getting 3 starts because the food was OK. Not out of this world. Got the garlic shrimp appetizer - the shrimp was over cooked. Got the grilled pork chops - you get two large chops - again the chops where dry and over cooked not much taste. It came with vegetables and what they call "Spanish Potatoes" the potatoes tasted to me like home made potato chips sliced thin with no flavor at all. Also got a mojito - it was OK but I wouldn't call it a mojito. More like a strong drink with some mint floating in the glass. Would I go ahead probably - my brother loves this place. Perhaps because it does have a really nice atmosphere - overlooking the water and you can sit outside and enjoy a cocktail while you wait for your table. I really enjoyed the food I had today, which included the garlic shrimp, crab cakes, and paella marinara. The rice was a great texture and was super flavorful with a good amount of seafood. I really enjoyed the crab cakes because they were nicely crisp on the outside and the crab was juicy on the inside. The waiter was super attentive and we didn't need to wait which is great considering basically every restaurant in NYC has a wait. Got here with a party of 14. We made the reservation a month ahead of time and it was confirmed twice the day of. The hostess claimed they lost the reservation. She was the worst. Elderly lady with curly blonde hair. She should be fired. She gave me an attitude about the reservation she lost. Then I was walking around viewing the restaurant while waiting since I was bored and she approached me and asked me what I was doing. Then made several rude comments as she walked away. To top it off we were waiting about an hour. While she laughed. Did nothing. And there were plenty of open tables. I asked to speak to management because I felt they should hire more professional people. She said "what did you say?" In a hostile manner. I said that she needed to be more professional and asked to speak to the manager. She refused! I'll never come here again.
