I've been here a few times and always had a positive experience. The line was short but can definitely build up but not as long as some other options on the street. I had a spinach flaky roll and latte. Both were just right and honestly above average. I will be back and the vibes of the area are worth coming back to not to mention exactly what Le Pannier's great at too.

Honestly, I was taken aback by the raving reviews here because my first (and it would be my last)…read morevisit to Le Panier fell completely short of expectations. So, what went well, and what has plenty of room for improvement? SERVICE - 5/5 The staff was super friendly and just really cool! I especially appreciated that he grabbed the pain au chocolat from the back at my request. I did not want mine touching the almond croissants displayed so closely together. I wanted a pain au chocolat, not an almond pain au chocolat. Sorry! AMBIANCE - 4/5 A very busy bakery/café located at Pike Place Market, near Starbucks. I liked the wall décor and the overall cozy vibe. Finding an empty seat may be a challenge? KOUIGN-AMANN/PAIN AU CHOCOLAT/MERINGUE - 2/5 Kouign-amann - 0/5 It pained me to give a kouign-amann such a low score, especially because it is my all-time favorite pastry. But this one was so subpar that I could not even finish it. It was, frankly, a complete waste of butter, flour, sugar and labor. I once lodged a complaint with a GM and Director of F&B at a certain Ritz-Carlton because their kouign-amanns were so bad that I asked them to stop whoever was making them. Since then, there has been a huge improvement, and that is what genuine feedback should accomplish. Pastry integrity is of utmost importance, and pastry crime is hardly forgivable. Pain au Chocolat - 2/5 Doughy and deeply disappointing. I simply cannot reconcile this with the fact that Le Panier has supposedly been a beloved fixture of Seattle's food scene since 1983. MERINGUE -- 5/5 Can anyone possibly mess up a meringue?? It is extremely disappointing to visit what is supposed to be a legendary, quintessential French bakery in Seattle, only to find that the two pastries I was most looking forward to, the kouign-amann and pain au chocolat, were both such letdowns. A café/bakery cannot survive on service and ambiance alone. The pastries have to deliver too. Time to rehone the baking skills, Le Panier.

Eschew Wifi-enabled tech-absorption in favor of real conversations, long-form thoughts exchanged with multiple intelligences called for in real human connection, or the simple joy of imagination and day dreaming. I love their decorative little tables facing the quiet Capitol Hill side-street itself not particularly attractive -- but which offers a pause for a bite and a sip without the capitalist rushtime nipping at your heels. I've had their stellar and inventive-flavored macarons, but their cakes are no slouches either. The rose pistachio coffee cake was delectable. I make this place a destination because if I am lucky I can get one of those bay-window tables for a vegetarian quiche or Spanish tortilla washed down by coffee. I noticed the use of fresh herbs and the sense of a good ingredients and home-touch hand with their plates, as opposed to the commonplace, harried, sloppy kitchen production. Their drip coffee was too acidic for my taste (I prefer nutty balanced, chocolatey flavor). Next time I would get a latte. A higgledy-piggledy antique-style bathroom in the back is another sign of a time-hewn, characterful place. The brickwork in their narrow back patio is inviting but on a recent Sunday morning had been snagged for a private party. Finally a note to the artful wall tributes to heroic workers martyrs from U.S. history. The cafe elevates the spirit of care for the working person, which is noteworthy. Counter to the loudest mouthpieces of the modern era that would erase these assassinated/ crushed heroes that fought for the wellbeing and life of working people, you know that it is these heroes' spirit of courage that continues to outshine the capitalist drivel and machine mind of the majority.

I was pleasantly surprised (and amused) to find their macarons with custom printing at the "REVIVE I-5" booth at the University Street Fair. I was amused enough to write a separate review for them. The quality of the artwork and print colors are fantastic and vibrant with the rainbow colors. Please see photo. If I was interested in custom macarons, I would most definitely order some from Macadons. The flavor in this case is a simple vanilla, which has its charms, though I typically buy other flavors. The shell doesn't have the characteristic slight crispy, which is understandable since these are not fresh from the store. The inside is a very creamy filling that squished out on the sides as I bite down. Everyone has their own texture preferences. I personally like it less creamy. I normally buy their ice cream macarons, but these are still very good. The individual boxes make them great for small gifts.

The croissant was on the crispier side, especially with the almond crumble on top it was a bit too cripsy for me, but I tend to like soft and flakey pastries so it's probably a matter of taste. There was a TON of almond filling in the middle. I enjoyed the taste and texture but it was too much filling for me personally. I would have liked more croissant in my croissant, so to say haha. The chocolate was slightly dark which worked well with the sweet pastry and filling! Overall I enjoyed the croissant but it was a tad too heavy on the filling and cripsy/crunchy for me.

They have so many yummy options, but I settled on a mushroom and Gruyère pastry and an earl grey blueberry cruffin. The mushroom and Gruyère pastry was SO good!!! Buttery flaky layers of dough with a strong earthy mushroom flavor and savory cheese - an absolute umami bomb. We ate it the day after and threw it in the air fryer for a couple of minutes, and it was so delicious. The cruffin was huge! Topped with a delicious light Earl grey cream that wasn't too sweet. It was filled with a blueberry cream and was definitely very filling. There's a lot of sugar coating it, as is standard with cruffins, but it's a nice sweet treat. Definitely coming back for the mushroom and Gruyère pastry and to try their other delicious flavors. Their supreme croissant flavor switches often and we can't wait to try the next one! I'll definitely be back to try the mushroom croissant again or maybe explore some of their other pastries next time.

They offered the item on both days this weekend and again I missed it on Saturday. I asked the front person what time I should get to the bakery in order not to miss it, and she recommended that I come in right at the opening. She said they ran out of it some time past 11am on Saturday, so it seems like they don't necessarily go flying off the counter immediately. Although I was curious, I still wasn't sure if I'd make it in time for opening at 8am the next day. But I was housesitting nearby and the dog woke me up at 6:30 begging to go on a walk. Not wanting to waste the fact that I woke up early on a Sunday, I decided to not go back to bed but head to the bakery at 8am. I arrived like 2-3 minutes before opening and was surprised to see there were already more than ten people lined up at the bakery. Having worked a retail job, my coworkers and I get annoyed when people start lining up before opening, so I tried my best to arrive right on time. But the line was a bit much. Anyways, I respect that everyone working at the bakery doesn't seem one bit offended by the crowd and are so nice to the customers. Consequently, I'm glad I went for the Maritozzi. It was really good. But if it's this difficult to get one then I probably won't go for it again.
