Had a strange experience trying to buy something here yesterday. I saw online that the store opens at 2pm, so I came in around 2:30pm. But when I got to the store, the sign said it was closed despite hours being 2pm-7pm. I was unsure, so I peeked inside the door window and saw a man eating oranges in the back. So I pushed the door open, and the man didn't get up until I acknowledged him. I asked if the store was open, which I think he was telling me yes. Then I asked if they sold (wooden) staffs and he replies "Umm staff?? No staff". Then I turn my head, scanning the whole entire store and then look back at him. I pointed to the big box of staffs that was literally next to him and said, "Are you sure... what about those staffs right there?". Then he goes "Ohh, yes. Which one do you want?". That about sums up my shopping experience. I was so confused, I don't know if he's the owner of the store or not, but it felt like he was just hanging out there and not really interested in interacting with people or selling items. Perhaps there was a language barrier gap, but he was able to guide me through the whole transaction smoothly afterwards. Strange. I eventually got my wooden staff that I needed for a project, and the price felt about right. Before I left I asked him if he wanted me to flip his sign from closed to open, which I don't think he really understood so I flipped it as I left. Convenient place to get your martial arts equipment, but in the rare occasion I ever do need to purchase these types of items I would probably just search online instead if I wasn't in a rush. read more

Came in here with some obscure needs for a cosplay and the woman managing the shop was SO HELPFUL. She brought out stuff at all kinds of styles and price points and I walked away with everything I needed, like two full keikogi, two tunics, sashes all for under $90. Pretty amazing. I read the review from the "east coast"/MMA guys and all I can say is, this is a professional supply store and the people who run it are working martial artists. You come in knowing what you need. A lot of the inventory is not on display. If you're looking for somewhere to take photos, have someone to smile at you and do a little happy dance, then go to the Space Needle. You're acting like a tourist, not a martial artist. Grow a pair. read more

There's a wide variety of items in here, including a great selection of shoes, uniforms, and ninja sticks. You can even buy single bags of tea for $.25. That's unusual and fun, for me anyways. Atmosphere is easy to walk in, but just a bit cramped. Service was friendly. read more

Im from the East Coast.. I came here 18 DEC 2015... I walked in with my girlfriend.. was NOT greeted AT ALL! The store clerk just continued to read a newspaper... The organization of the store is HORRIBLE! And NOT TO MENTION, the store is about as big as a WALK-IN CLOSET!! MMA Practitioners, do NOT waste your time. If you practice other Martial Arts then MAYBE take a stab at this store.. and thats HUGE MAYBE! read more

This is the place. I think my first purchase there was in 1988, and this last year the same person behind the counter sold me a tanto. Lots of things in between. When a local theater company person asked where to get the right clothes for a play, I suggested this place. One stop, they were happy. This is a place for folks who have a good idea of what they want. The Federal Way place and, longer ago, Golden Dragon in Tacoma were good, but they fell by the wayside. Im all the way from the EAST COAST...and visited Seattle...and shopped at S.M.A.S. and WOW! its great! Not even in NYC can i find the right shade of olive green uniform for KungFu...not only that...but they have other colors too! In Cotton! not that shiny nonsense! The lady was friendly , helpful..and how legit is she..she even knows Wu Style Tai Chi...not the other tree hugging granola eating styles! This store is a wonderful little gem in the middle of Chinatown. Many different weapons and clothing for all martial arts. Any kid would love to play with all of the weapons on the wall. Service is friendly. read more

I had previously done business with this establishment, purchasing some escrima sticks and some TKD shoes. At the time, there was an older, asian lady that provided good service. I recently started taking an Aikido class and decided to patronize this business to buy a judo gi. I called twice and was quoted a price of 65$ (single weave white) and 85$ (double weave). I then made the long trek from Marysville to Seattle to buy at this business. When I arrived there, there was an older Caucasian women with red hair working there. When I walked in (I'm African American) she just looked and me and said nothing. It wasn't until I stood at the counter for about 20 secs the she flashed a faint smile and said "yes"? (remember this store is TINY, so it was me and her in a 20 foot area) I explained that I had called previously about Judo gi and she produced two. I verified the price and she stated 75$ and 110$. I paused and stated that I was told 65$ and 85$. She flashed the faint smile and said they were wrong. I confirmed that it was her that I talked to and she looked confused and again said the price was 75$ and 110$. I informed her I called the establishment twice to verifiy the price and brought that amount. She looked at me again and said the price I was quoted was wrong and that the price was what she said. I asked if she could order the onese she quoted to me and she said she COULD but that they do not order that often. I pointed out the price was even listed wrong ON THE PACKAGE. At this she took out a magic marker and crossed out the price and WROTE in what she had just quoted me. At this I almost stormed out. But I paused because an older Hispanic (?) woman and her daughter walked in. Immediately the woman behind the was warm and helpful and began to help the girl find some shoes. I noted that the older hispanic woman and red headed woman began reminsing over taking some class together (it sounded like Tai Chi) some years ago and the red head was trying to get her to start back with her. I was in dire need of the gi and in the end bought it anyway. I also told her that her manner with me was less than honorable and it was odd that so many today practice Martial Arts physically but fail to spiritually embody the spirit of Budo. My issue was not the difference of 10 Dollars but rather the manner in which I was treated. I wrote it off as racism until I read Josh M's comments here and my mouth dropped open as I was treated almost exactly as he was. When I lived in Kent I had went to All Martial Arts as well and the service was great but moving up to Marysville made that trek not practical. This store does have a nice, homely atmosphere. Most of the equiment seems as though they were items collected over the years. The magazines are from years ago and the weapons/equiment are dusty. The only thing that appears new are the uniforms/gi. My run in with this woman killed my liking of this store. After this experience, I will not patronize this business again. If you choose to, I would recommend calling prior to going and then seeing if your experience is the same. I don't like bad mouthing people so I will simply list my experiences and let others draw thier own conclusions. Take care and be safe. read more

They have a good selection of equipment, much of it is of good quality. The drawback is that it is very expensive compared to what you could get online. There is also the problem that the staff is notoriously rude, they are very short with any questions and give the general impression that they'd be happier if you left. read more

I entered the store with a student of mine, saw an older woman behind the counter. She looked at me and I gave her a slight bow. She just stared. No biggie, she must be busy. Continued looking around the store, it's cramped in there and I am rather large. I saw a decent variety of show weaponry but nothing that stood out as battle ready. I was viewing a shirasaya style tanto in the glass counter when I hear, "Are you guys going to buy anything, or what?" Tone, inflection, wording. All combative. All unnecessarily rude. Surprised by the complete lack of any semblance of customer service, I asked if the store carried something most places don't, still hoping the unpleasantness was imagined. She simply replied, "I don't have that," and turned her attention back to whatever was far more important than potential customers. I had heard that this shop was affiliated with the Gung Fu studio above it and had expected to spend some money to support the cause (I started my martial arts training over 22 years ago and have a huge amount of respect for small dojos and kwoons) but why should I contribute to a business whose representative is oozing contempt the moment I walk in? Disappointed to say the least. I, for one, will not return nor will I send any of my students this way. I don't want my butt kissed just because I entered a store but I don't appreciate being talked down to for the same reason. Are you guys going to buy anything, or what..? A martial artist should have a better center. A retail store should have some regard for a customer. read more

Oh the days of yore...what little boy doesn't see a shop full of swords and nun-chucks and shout for joy. If only I had a ninja star, I would surely be happy for the rest of my life. If you threw in a bo staff I would most likely be good and only use it for good! The inevitable rummaging of dusty items. I'm sure that the local Choy Lay Fut school down the street keeps this place in business. You hardly ever see anybody in here except hapless parents dragged in by little boys that watch too much Kung Fu Theater. That said, I was in dire need of a Shinai for Kendo and made the mistake of purchasing one. Dried out and brittle...ended up cracking on me the first day in use. I'm sure the solid wood swords or the chinese practice sabers are alright to buy, but steer clear of the bamboo shinai's. As I was once a little boy that loved stopping by here and a big fan of Bruce and Jacky , I hope this place stays in business for all the future generations of little boys. read more

I wanted a uniform today. Called in + the nice lady on the phone tells me she has it. Made my way down there + had a great experience. Found the black wushu uniform I wanted + some shoes. I like the price for get it now. read more
