This rating is based on 6 people's experience and 10k spent at this hotel. (please excuse the missing spaces I wanted to squeeze it all in) I am giving Secrets Akumal 1 star. The one star reflects the experience only, but I would give the following people five stars: Ivan:pool concierge)Oscar:hotel entertainment team)Alan:building 5 concierge)Armando (executive chef) Edgar:waiter at Seaside restaurant)Elizhar (sp)(seaside restaurant
manager. Are(sp)poolside waiter Claudia, spa masseuse. The listed people are the reason why I stayed, and before I EVER book again here,I would need to ensure that they are there. Let me begin with the property. The property is extremely clean, very well groomed, everyone on the property,no matter how hot or uncomfortable it was, they never took off their mask, even when I would ask,so that we could take a picture together. That was AMAZING!Their staff was clearly committed to safety, and the room was very clean. Now on to the reason behind the one start. The food was a problem UNTIL Armando, the executive chef stepped in. The food was very regular, nothing that you would expect from a Secrets Resort, and often times, was either served too salty, too sweet, or cold. Armando, the executive chef, SAVED the resort one day before we left. I assume he heard he must have heard about our complaints, and he made us a special dinner and a special lunch before leaving and it was NOTHING SHORT OF YUMAZING!In addition, because of protective COVID practices, the hotel restaurants were only able to accommodate so many people at a time. BUT the hotel was FULLY booked without considering how many people they could accommodate for food. So - there was a wait at every restaurant that we went to. The longest wait that we had was 40 minutes, the shortest was 10minutes, which was not b
ad. Next, I would like to talk about the spa. We had reservations for 6PM and we were told by three different people, one at the spa kiosk, and two different people at the actual spa, that we needed to arrive 15 minutes early for our reservation. We did exactly that, just like our four friends before us did. However, the difference was when our four other friends arrived 15 minutes early as advised for their appointments, they filled out the paperwork and had one full hour of hydrotherapy prior to their massage appointments. Not so for us. Our experience was far different. When my husband and I arrived 15 minutes early for our appointments and filled out the paperwork, we naturally asked about the hydrotherapy as what we then understood to be an included part of the service. Spa staff responded to our question by telling us that we should have come earlier because hydrotherapy is closed.I had the hot stone massage, and my husband had the deep tissue. My husband's experience was great. However, my hot stone massage left a lot to be desired. As a matter of fact, I left with more pain in my neck than I came with and was hurting for two days.Racial profiling is also real in Mexico. Friends that we traveled with, when we went to Seaside restaurant for breakfast, my friend had on a skirt cover-up for her bathing suit and the hostess asked her to go to her room and put on shorts because the requirement was shorts. My friend complied, but when we sat down, we saw two white women walk in with similar bathing suit cover-ups, and they were not told to go back to their rooms and change. They were sat down at the table. The last night before we left, I ordered a bottle of rose (please excuse the lack of an asterisk over the "e") at the Hibachi restaurant. The gentleman poured the bottle of rose for me to smell and taste. Immediately, upon the smell, I could tell that it was a skunked wine. I told the waiter that the wine was bad, and he sent over - who I think to be either the manager, or the person that's in charge of wine. That person told me that1,he was going to go to the back and taste the wine 2,perhaps the reason why it tasted bad was because "it's a young wine," and 3,he finally told me that he would comp that one bottle for me, but that if I ordered another bottle and it was bad, he would not be able to comp that bottle. After listening to him and letting him have his moment, I then informed he was not speaking to someone who did not know wine, and in fact I have a WSET lII and I know what a skunked wine smells and taste like, and that it has nothing to do with it being a young wine and it had everything to do with how they inappropriately stored it. He then nodded his head and walked away. All of these complaints are complaints that my husband, myself and the four other people that we traveled with, kept telling the staff as we were polled on surveys they were randomly doing with people at the resort, either poolside or beachside. Here is another issue not one person from management called our management person called us,gave us a bottle of wine, or comped anything off of the $270 we paid at checkout.I more to but...character read more
