Conversely to that experience, Mako Overhead door came out the same day, completed the repairs that I already knew were needed to be done and charged an honest price for the work performed. No overcharging, they didn't try to up sell me on things that I needed, just honest work for a fair price. I am happy that I didn't call the big door company companies, but instead stuck with a small guy that performed as you'd expect them to.

No discount or real attempt to make up for how a returning customer was treated but we all have family problems so I let it go. 3rd and final experience is in regards to my new store. It is the same person as my previous experience. He came out, measured what I needed and said we would have our measurement in a couple days. That was almost 2 months ago. I've called repeatedly and he just keeps giving us the run around. Never returns a our calls and I'm just fed up. I have a feeling the guy I'm working with is the owner and doesn't really care about our business or this review. He said, "you have three choices: okay, good, or very good. Okay is $1100, good is $1300, very good is $1500. The good and very good come with warrantee." He told me the job would take 90 minutes. All of these quotes seemed VERY high to me. Home Advisor says that the average charge for a garage door opener is $218-$511, and you should expect to pay about $65 an hour for labor. So even at a premium, anything over $1000 seemed like I was getting ripped off. That said, I need my garage door to open, so I told the tech I would do the $1300 option. The tech did the work in 90 minutes, as promised. The opener worked well. Then he gave me an invoice for $1600! I told him that he had quoted me $1300, and he told me that was just for the opener, not the labor. I told him that he quoted me $1300 and that's what I would pay. He told me he would call his boss and see what he could do. I heard him tell his boss that the customer was complaining about the cost and what could he do. The boss lowered it to $1450. I paid it, but I was (and am) very upset about what seemed to be a sketchy way of doing business. I looked up the model online, and it was listed on Amazon for less than $200, so it seems like the opener they installed is likely not a premium product.

The unit was one of their best made, the Professional I model. It's weakness is it is a belt drive and after 17 years it was time for a service. Eli recommended a new rail in addition to the belt which includes all new related parts given the units age. This turned out to be an excellent recommendation because there was a hidden broken adjuster. The motor is guaranteed for life and runs as if it was new. The job was finished in a little over an hour with balancing, tune up and lubrication at 1/2 the cost of a new unit. It is difficult to find qualified contractors in the Ventura County area.
