Another spot I can't believe I haven't reviewed. Semenzas has been around on that Neil location a long time, from its "bad neighborhood" days. Wood fired pizza and their crust is a 10 all the way, probably my favorite crust in town. The combo with peppers added is my go to, a little pricey so it's kind of a special occasion place and I can't speak to dining inside because I never have but it's cozy and a nice little date spot. read more

If you know me, you know how much I really enjoy pizza. I heard great things from my wife about this spot, but in my eyes tonight, the 'Za here at Semenza's fell a bit short. Here's why. First of all, I do love the vibe of this spot, the atmosphere is lively. Just like most local pizza joints, depending on your location, the place is going to be packed, full of guest, waiting for their meals, hanging out, enjoying the moment -- and Semenza's was no exception. The cashier who verified my order was chill, attentive and polite. I like that! It made the transaction and pickup pleasant. My wife and I came away with a half and half of a sausage and onion, sausage and pineapple pizza on a red sauce, garlic knots and fries and wings. On the drive home, I tried the garlic knots and while the bread had a delicious doughiness to it, it lacked the garlic and buttery flavor. I ended up making a bit of my own sauce and seasoning to put on top. The crinkle cut fries were good, can't go wrong with those. Not too salty, some pieces crispy. Then came the pizza. The light and thin crust was special, my issues were the lack of sauce and if I go any deeper maybe the herbs. What makes a delicious slice of pizza isn't just the toppings in my opinion, it's the attentiveness that goes into the ingredients when everything comes together. It just felt like there was a lack in that flavor department. The wings were good! Their choice of a medium spiciness in sauce was delicious . Dang it, but the pizza, man. I ate two slices because I was hungry but that was it. My wife said "you didn't eat a lot of the chicken" and it's like I know, I wanted more pizza, but then again I didn't. Now I'm not a food critic really it was that this simply didn't hit all the notes I look for in the flavor of a good slice that would make me want more of it. I may go back after a while, give it some time. It could've been an off night for them? Lots of foot traffic can sometimes impact quality at times, but it shouldn't though. It's all love. Unfortunately the pizza was a bit dry and could definitely use more sauce and although the toppings were great, it was just ok this time. I gave it 4 stars because the wings were so good and saucy! Pizza just like the pizza of all my fondest childhood memories. Nostalgic, family-owned, classic neighborhood pizza at a great price. And unexpectedly a hockey fan haven! We decided to grab pizza last minute on a Friday night and decided on Semenzas because it's close to home. There was one large party and four or so families enjoying dinner when we arrived. The small restaurant felt busy, but not crowded. We were immediately greeted by the owner's daughter, Carina, and ordered a pepperoni pizza, wings, and two beers. She overheard us comment on the hockey memorabilia and asked our team. A few minutes later, our beers were delivered with a little joke and Carina came to ask some hockey trivia on her dad's request. We chuckled and my husband answered the questions. When the crowd died down, owner Pablo came out to talk hockey and business. After working for over a decade for the original owner, Pablo took over the business and started adding his own hockey touch. He enamored us with his enthusiasm for hockey, pride in his family business, and connection to the neighborhood. The pizza was classic, and delightfully unpretentious. Cooked to a perfect crisp on the crust with just the right amount of cheese and pepperoni. We tried the mild wings and they were similarly classic. The wings were small and crispy. The sauce seemed to be tomato based with a hint a seasoning. Next time I'll try some with heat. Overall, it was a sweet experience and you can't beat their prices. We'll be back for sure. read more

Went in today with my family, waited for about an hour, which is expected on a busy night. Problem comes when people after us are being served before us and we're still waiting, so I decided to go up to the register and ask about our order, and the lady working the front asks, which one is your table? I pointed at our table, and she said yeah your order is over there. I asked where? She said in the oven, I said okay cool, I was just wondering if there was a problem or something, and she said a problem? I said yeah, kuz people came in after us and they've been served first, and we're still waiting. She said who? I told her I wasn't going to point at the customers, but there is a table currently being served that came in after us. She said okay? well like I said we've been busy, (she seemed annoyed), so I asked her, is there an issue? Kuz all I wanted to know was when our food will be ready... she said well it says it should be ready by this time so it should be out soon... so we apologize? I just smiled and said okay cool (I was not about to argue with her or confront her about her attitude, I already made up my mind after her response that I wouldn't come back there again) plus those people are handling our food, I'm not about to give them a reason to mess with our food lol. So I went and sat down and started telling my mom and kids what they said, and as I'm doing that, the pizza man comes to the window and yells across the room to yell at me "we've been busy you know? So that's why!", I told him the same thing I told the lady, "is there a problem???", and he said "I'm just saying we've been busy!", and I responded yeah, and I already talked to her about it so there was no need for you to come and yell anything. My mom was embarrassed, and I was upset at the entire interaction with these unprofessional people. They seemed aggravated just because I asked about the time our food will be out, I stated that they've served people after us and that is a pretty valid reason in my opinion, to mention, but their ego was too big to take accountability or even be professional enough to handle it appropriately. I would've just apologized and said their food will be out in 5 minutes and that we're sorry for the inconvenience. Easy. No need to be combative, especially when they're in the wrong. So note to anybody going, don't ask about your food, let them serve people that came in after you, let them ignore your table while you wait and maybe you'll get your food in time, maybe not, but DO NOT ask, or you'll get an attitude and get yelled at by the pizza man himself lol. read more

Wow, I think I first ate here (close to) three decades ago (why am I aging myself!?). We ordered the Rudi special (3 medium, 2 topping pizzas), and it was pretty good pizza for a pretty good price! It was enough to feed 4 preschoolers and 4 adults. The pizza was well cooked with a nice crispy crust and decent flavored sauce. Toppings were pretty plentiful as well. The ambiance was alright, but the littles did get reprimanded for acting like wild stallions. Maybe that was a little off putting since there weren't any other customers around. Or maybe they just thought we were not the best parents . Regardless, it was a fun experience and the food was as good as I remembered. Or was I too young to remember? Just kidding. I was craving pizza and decided to just order and have delivered. I remember how great this pizza is and was so glad to call and hear a polite voice asking how May I help you and I asked if delivery was available, yes I was told so I ordered a medium half and half. Combination on one side and on the other would be the garlic sauce with cheese of course, sausage (mild) and mushrooms. I was told about 45 minutes. I was so happy to answer my door 35mins later and had this piping hot pizza with a fantastic delivery guy! He gave me Parmesan and Red pepper packets napkins and offered paper plates. We have probably driven by this place several times and never noticed it. My wife saw that yelp featured it on Instagram today and all she had to say to me was "pizza" and I was on board! You walk in and it has a rustic feel with dark wood floors and picnic style tables similar to another pizza joint in town which we love. You order at the counter and there are several menu boards on the wall with sandwiches, wings, pizza and pizza combo specials. We decided to order an extra large super combination pizza which allows you to get a small one topping pizza for only $2.00!!! Yes please!! We also decided to try the garlic knots. Semenza's was featured on The Local Yelp today and I loved the picture showing the cheese so lushly floating over the edge of the crust. I'd already consumed enough healthy food for the day but that picture screamed EAT MESo we just swung by on our way home. We arrived shortly after 2:20 pm and when I FINISHED eating my half of a mini cheese pizza the time was 3:45! Seriously? That means we can come in for a mid afternoon SNACK and be in and out in 25 minutes? Kinda AweSome. But remember, it's mid afternoon and only a couple other people in here! I ordered a mini which comes with TWO toppings. I ordered cheese & CHEESE! So maybe less cheese if I added pepperoni? That would be fine. I took a pic of a single piece to show how the cheese ran off! The serving plate for the MINI measures 9" edge to edge. So the pics give you an idea of the SIZE of the MINI. It's a nice meal or huge snack for one person. I split it with my husband and it was perfect! ESPECIALLY for $4.99 The crust was not too thick and not too thin. I ordered it well done so it was a bit crispy. The sauce was nice. Not spicy. I added peppers. I also took a pic showing the measurements of each of the other sizes. NOTE: There is a notice on the counter that makes it clear that free ranch dressing is NOT unlimited. Awesome place! My Grandma, Aunt, Dad, and Mom came down here; every time we visit here from California we always eat here. The place is older themed and very clean! They have hilarious signs on the bathroom saying "Flammable Gas" haha! They were busy so not as fast as they are when it's 1-2 people/groups. It's more less a hole in the wall. Customer service is great. Super friendly, fast! I overheard others saying something about ants near the table and they went into action, moved the family and took care of the issue! Another new discovery in 2014 and a fantastic fixture in our community! Semenza's has been in business since 1980, serving up delicious pizza and wings with ice cold beverages. The current owner, Pablo or J.P. as some call him, has been working here since 1994 and bought the business in 2008! I've been living 2 miles from this place for the 5+ years, driven past it more times than I could possibly count, and yet hadn't set foot in there until last night! I came in really late (9PM) and talked with Pablo, got the story, asked how the food was, and asked about their food. At first he joked that it was all mediocre, but you could tell he was proud of it. I told him I was a wing snob, and he modestly told me they were known for them and I was sure to like them. So on his suggestion, I ordered the "Small Special", 1lb of wings and a small 2 topping pizza, to try this place out. So how were the wings you ask? Fantastic! These rank in my top 3! Turns out Pablo used to work over at JOX, which serves up some of my favorites, so he knows what's up with wings. The wings were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I ordered the Nitro BBQ, aka Nitro Nutty sauce at Legends,a favorite combo of mine, and these wings were covered in it the best way possible. You could see all the chiles in the sauce, and smell the intense vinegar and chile scented steam coming off of them. These wings rock! Well what about the pizza right? It's a pizzeria after all. The best way to describe this is it combines all the characteristics of a good pie, in a way you've never had before. The crust is on the thinner side, but there's almost two layers to it. The top is chewy and doughy in all the right ways, but the bottom is cracker thin and crunchy! My pizza had jalapeno and bacon on it, and it was delicious. I've never had a crust like this though anywhere and I'll definitely be back for more. I'm so happy that I discovered Semenza's finally, met Pablo, and can proudly tell everyone about it. This is just another one of those Reno institutions that more people should visit. The food is worth the drive, and I can see it being a really fun place to crack some beers and kick it with friends. read more

We used to love coming here but as of today we will not be going back. We ordered 5 pounds of wings and only received 3 pounds. I called the owner and he was the worst. He made up excuse after excuse about the reason but not once made an intention to make it better. Argued that I ate some because we didn't call right away. Absolutely the worst pizza I have ever had in my life. My kids really wanted to come here, because they swore when they were in middle school, Semenza had the best wings. The pizza tasted like a thicker version of Tostino's dollar pizza you buy in the frozen section of the markets for$1. This place isn't cheap either. I spent close to $35 for a large cheese pizza and 1 pound of wings for 8.99, I think their was a total of eight wings with very little meat on them. I had to pay $2 for extra ranch, because the little cup they give you wouldn't cut it with the order and three people. While we were eating, they sprayed the tables with a heavy cleaning scent that was really unpleasant to smell while you are eating. Truly one of the most disappointing dining experiences I have ever had. There are so many better quality places for pizza. This one is truly awful. read more

Wow... the Crust of Disappointment! So we're out on a Saturday with my parents and thought, "Hey, lets get pizza!" A quick yelp search yielded this place, so we thought we'd give it a shot. First off... you walk in and feel like its 1980 all over again. Not to mention it was pretty sketchy/run-down inside this place. And the smell... OH THE SMELL! It smelled like you walked into a toxic cleaning supply store. Not the glorious smell of pizza, that one hopes for when entering a pizzeria. Now... the service. HORRIBLE! The guy at the counter just stared at us... waiting for our order. There wasn't any, "Welcome", "Hi", "How ya doin'?" -- just annoyed that we walked in to his establishment. So we ordered and quickly sat down, as we wanted to get out of this man's site asap. ;-) So, we sat down at these long picnic tables that looked like they had been outside at a public park for years in the elements, only to be reused indoors after receiving many coats of black paint... no sanding or refinishing... just black paint. What was even more interesting was the use of clear silicone/caulking to fill in the large cracks of the table. You know the kind you use around the base of your bathtub (kind of a milky clear grout if you will.) I wasn't sure if I was sitting on a bathroom floor, or at a dining table. So, a different guy finally brings our drinks out, and doesn't say a peep. He just sets them all down in one place at the end of the table, and scurries away. So we grabbed our drinks, dispersed them to the correct people and tried to forget about the smell. Finally, our pizza shows up... which is a large Combination looking quite good, so we all dig in. And now for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: The Good -- The toppings were fresh, adequate, and actually reasonably tasty. The Bad -- The crust.... holy smokes it was AWFUL! Now as I'm sitting there chewing this very confusing concoction in my mouth (good toppings / horrible crust) I thought back to my time at the counter with Mr. Personality... and behind him was a guy pulling out a flat, white disc -- and I was thinking to myself... "That's not a frozen pizza crust, is it?!?!?" I thought it surely had to be a component for something else they made there. But NOPE! It WAS in fact a pizza crust! I have never in my 50+ years of pizza consumption had such a thin tasteless crust (like old stale Saltine's) -- without the salt! It was awful....just AWFUL. The Ugly -- As we are taking our first bites of this pizza, literally our first bites... one of the employees starts spraying this horrible, toxic, chemical smelling spray all over the table next to us. That's all I could smell/taste. Like it wasn't bad enough that it was filling the air from the moment we walked in, he had to spray it 3 feet away from where we were eating? What was he thinking!?! Oh... and let me just tell you that there was nobody... I mean NOBODY else there! We were the only 4 in that restaurant besides the employees. So I guess the "emptiness, initial service and smell" should have been 3 huge red flags to leave as soon as we walked in... I'll accept that. But the place got good reviews, we were so hungry, and our parents are elderly and it's quite the endeavor to get them in/out of the car. My husband and I felt so bad that we brought Mom and Dad there, as they rarely get out... but at that point, it was too late! Needless to say, we will NEVER go back to this establishment... and you should seriously think about finding a different pizzeria. What you may not know is how professionally they handle deliveries Semenza's would NEVER trust any 'delivery service' with their valuable customer. No 3rd party trying to hustle you for a bigger tip. If you were a high school or college-age kid in '80s and '90s Reno, chances are you probably spent some time at Semenza's. It's the kind of place that attracts hungry kids with a hankering for salt, carbs, and cheese. By way of full disclosure, I have a few blurry memories of beer-soaked meals there as a young adult, but that was a long time ago. I'd heard the original family sold the place to one of their employees, so on a whim my dining group and I decided to check it out. The service was really fast, especially for a pizza joint during dinner rush. Everything we ordered was served up in about 20 minutes, starting with an order of cream cheese jalapeño poppers ($7.60, 8 pieces). They definitely came from a box, but were exactly what we were after: hot, gooey, crunchy, and spicy. Along with those bites we ordered a basket of French fries ($3.75), which offered a bit of a tasty surprise. They were crispy, well-salted, and instantly reminded me of a certain famous fast food fry. If you'd served them to me without knowing their origin, I'd have sworn golden arches were involved. There are just two sandwiches available so we chose to try both ($8 each, with a bag chips). The sub sandwich involved a foot-long Italian roll stuffed with ham, salami, pepperoni, lettuce, onion, tomato, oil, vinegar, Italian seasoning, and shredded mozzarella. It was OK, but I probably wouldn't order it again. I didn't detect a lot of seasoning, and the cheese just made me wish for provolone. However, the oven-baked sub was crazy good. Essentially pizza in a roll, you choose up to five toppings, slathered with pizza sauce and mozzarella, then fired in the oven until the whole thing becomes a crunchy, cheesy, zesty delight. That sandwich could be habit forming. Our order of chicken wings ($24, 3lbs) put a huge, saucy smile on my face. They were about average size and deep-fried crispy--the way God intended--with a spot-on Buffalo-style hot sauce. Also available in, mild, medium, nitro, and honey BBQ, there's really nothing more I can say other than, "Yes, please." Last up, a pair of 12" medium pizzas; one plain cheese ($12.81) and the other a classic combo with pepperoni, sausage, salami, black olive, onion, mushroom, and bell pepper ($17.34). The crust was what I'd call medium thick, essentially what I most expect when ordering a "West coast" pie. It won't win any awards, but it was nice and crispy on the bottom and served its purpose well. The sauce was classic hole-in-the-wall pizza joint, nothing fancy but all the flavors that should be in there. Between the two pies I preferred plain cheese, especially when combined with those great wings. It kind of cuts the heat in between bites of spicy meat, and paired with beer is one of the best, most honest meals I can think of. What's not to love? The menu also includes other sides including garlic knots, garlic bread, cheese bread, onion rings, cheese sticks, and zucchini sticks, but we were already at maximum carbohydrate overload by the end of our well-enjoyed meal. read more

I have been coming here since I was little. My family would always order the recession buster- large pepperoni pizza and half hot/half medium wings. Oh what a fond memory I have of my brother just drenched in the chicken wing sauce with it all over his face and hands. We enjoyed it so much! And I am glad to say that nothing has changed. I still stop in for their delicious pizza and wings! The medium sauce for the wings is my favorite. It's a unique flavor, not like anything I've tasted anywhere else! It has the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. They also don't give you little wimpy wings, they give you meaty wings that are fully coated with the sauce. The hot sauce is great too, it definitely has a kick to it so if you want to open up your nasal passages and get a little singe on your eyebrow this one is for you. Just kidding. I definitely have a high tolerance for spicy things, so the hot isn't too hot for me! Moving on to the pizza- they put enough toppings, the sauce, cheese, and dough are all yummy! They prepare their dough slightly on the thin side so you get the crunchy bottom and doughy top! It might not seem like the greatest area, but don't let that fool or intimidate you. It's an easy to get to location and you'll most definitely leave satisfied. I'm happy to say that I will always support this local pizzeria! This is a long over due review !! It's so refreshing to search Yelp and come across a restaurant that you haven't tried yet !! Where have I been !! I love this pizza place !! It's family owned and operated and the young girl is so friendly!! Friday's are pizza night and we try to try a different place every week, and this one is a keeper !! Since then, we have been there 4 times and had delivery 2 times !! It's that good ! The toppings are fresh and plentiful, the crust, not too thick and has a crunch ! The restaurant is very clean and I like how they have the picnic tables in there, makes it real homey!! I would totally recommended stopping in and having a cold beer and a pie !! Prices are great and the wings are good too and OH don't forget to try the garlic knots !!! O.M.G so good !! After all my visits here I give this place like 10 lbs !! I mean 5 stars read more
