Half peppers and onions, half mushrooms and onions

I have been wanting to try this place for a very long time now. The last few times I tried the wait was either too long (a good sign of the quality) or they closed earlier than I had expected. In any case it was worth the wait!! Growing up on the east coast, I have to say, pizza doesn't quite hit out here. But I was really impressed with this pie!! You could taste the quality of ingredients, and the crust was solid. The staff were very friendly, mostly young kids on a Saturday. It has the feel of a NY pizza joint, adorned with Buffalo Bills memorabilia. I can't wait to go back, and next time I want to try a cannoli!

I saw this place featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives and decided to stop in and give it a try. We ordered our go-to specialty pizza--pepperoni, pineapple, and jalapeño on a Sicilian-style crust. It was outstanding. The crust had the perfect texture and the sauce really tied everything together. We also tried a cookie and a cannoli cookie cup for dessert. My wife absolutely loved her cookie, which is saying something since she's pretty particular about cookies. I had the cannoli cookie cup, and it was delicious, a great finish to the meal. Overall, I'll definitely be returning and highly recommend checking this place out.

Love the local, authentic vibe of this place. Can see why it's been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Tables all together in a smallish square space, but clean and with a NY-themed decor. Probably gets full quickly on a busy night. Fun that you can see them making the hand-tossed crust. Had a make-your-own veggie thin crust pizza, and the ingredients were fresh and delicious with a good variety of options. Garlic knots were crispy (I prefer a bit more chewy) with sauce to dip. Service was friendly but a lot of personal chatter going on, which carries in a small place like this. Great local option for those nearby. Things to come back and try: Sicilian and cauliflower crusts and cannoli cookie cup!

We came here for the first time and loved it. On the corner of the building. Small inside with maybe 8-9 tables with the red and white checkered table cloths. Space itself is small and cozy, but we could see how during very busy times it can be cramped in there. The ordering line is directly ahead when you walk in. Not much wiggle room. The staff are all very friendly. The pizza was perfect. Reminded me of east coast pizza, folding it in half and taking a big bite. Delicious. The homemade sausage was so good. We also tried their garlic knots which were pretty good too. We'd definitely come back again to try the Sicilian and some desserts. They have small to-go pizza boxes for leftovers. There is a single restroom available for customers too. Overall we enjoyed it.

Easily one of the very best places to get a pizza in Reno. They are always busy, so it is best to order takeout or reserve a time for a table if dining in well ahead of time. The customer service is always great and you can tell the staff enjoys working there. The pies are simple but amazing and one of the closest you're going to get to a true NY slice.

This was our first time visiting SWHP. My expectations were high based on online reviews and we were not disappointed. This is epic pizza. We ate outside under the tree with a nice breeze despite the 92F temperature. That crust! All ingredients are fresh and the cheese and sauce are outstanding. Highly recommend this place on their community vision and their outstanding food! Cannoli tonight! Love the tribute public service patches on the wall! Even a Dolphin fan can respect the Buffalo roots and Jim Kelly signed jersey!

I was in the mood for a good pizza, originally by the slice before my boyfriend convinced me otherwise. This was my first time dining at Smiling and I was pleasantly surprised with how homey and close-knit it felt upon entering. The walls are decorated with Bills memorabilia and traditional NY Italian family memories, with the tables adorned with the classic red and white checkered tablecloths. The menu is rather small, instead of preselected pizza options, it's a build-your-own style with dessert and drink options. Everything seemed reasonably priced and came out in time. This scratched my pizza itch. One thing that really piqued my interest while eating in was the amount of regulars who came in and were warmly greeted. It is a very good sign when dining somewhere local to see how much of the community comes in and pay patronage. Compared to other pizza joints in town, I rate this one highly for its family feel and good pies.

Fast and friendly service. Pizza was excellent--one of the best thin crust pizzas in town without a doubt. The seasoned ricotta was a fantastic addition to the pizza. We went on a weeknight and it wasn't too busy, but there aren't a ton of tables so I can see this place getting busy fast, especially on a weekend.

So the wife I heard about this place. So we were not far from this place and gave it a try. So glad we did when you go in the place it smells amazing. The guy that helped us was super friendly and nice. The pizza was so good and good size. I got a single piece and it was huge. My wife's pizza with the cauliflower crust was yummy. Pizza came out fast this is a must try pizza place! Highly recommend this place! Cheers

We tried this place on a recommendation from someone that is originally from NJ. We were told it was very good, and we were not disappointed. The pizza was delicious and the cannolis looked amazing, although we didn't have any. It's a small restaurant, maybe 10 tables and a few outside as well. You can make reservations, which I would suggest for a Friday. Service was excellent and we will definitely return.

New York style - pepperoni and anchovies. Tremendous!

As a Registered Pizza Enthusiast (RPE), I seek out the best local pizza places before I travel anywhere that I've never been before. While my wife and I prepared for our trip to Reno/Lake Tahoe, I spent a good amount of time researching just about every pizza place in the Reno and greater Lake Tahoe area. Smiling with Hope looked to have all the makings of a hidden gem - small, locally (and Veteran) owned, community-minded, sports themed, family style pizzeria. We were greeted by the friendly staff as soon as we walked in. We ordered one New York style and one Sicilian style pizza. They were both fantastic but the New York style stole the show! The Garlic Knots were also very good, smothered in garlic and parmesan. While we were eating, the manager(?) came by to see how we were enjoying everything, which I alway appreciate. We had plenty of leftover pizza to snack on the next day or two of our trip. Who doesn't love a cold slice the next day? I feel like my research paid off and we found the best pizzeria in the area. I will gladly recommend Smiling with Hope Pizza to anyone I know that is visiting the area, and we will definitely be back some day.

Half pepperoni and pepperoni with jalapeños/pineapple
Cecilia B.

One of my top 5 favorite pizza spots in Reno. The pizza is delicious. We usually get pepperoni, pep with pineapple or jalapeños. IMO the pizza is a bit oily and the pep is a touch spicy, but VERY good flavor and thin. If you are ordering Friday or Sat night the wait times are usually 1h.

Ask the Community - Smiling With Hope Pizza

Thought you guys were retiring? Loved the restaurant and the concept! DELICIOUS chocolate chip cookies! Happy retirement!

New owners, the original retired. No drop in quality, still amazing pizza.

Does the call in time between 3-5 count as business hours (ie we get the voicemail at 4:10 we should give up because the dough is gone already)?

We have only 1 landline phone line with call waiting. Judy answers every call starting at 3pm until the dough runs out and takes every order. We are a small operation and apologize if you have trouble getting through.

Do you guys sell pizza by the slice only?

Sorry but we don't. Only whole pies.

Would you guys do a thin crust ? Absolutely loved your pie and my wife says the owner is from my families same area in Jersey and knows about the Star.

Thinned usually my fave ( Nu Yalk Pizza), but I really enjoyed their crust at SWH as not overly doughy!

I have unusual food allergies and a serious need for pizza. I'll be in Reno soon. Could you tell me what spices are in your pizza sauce? Thanks SO much.

What are you allergic to?

How do we place an order if we continue to call since 3:00PM yet we never get through to anyone? We want to support you and enjoy our favorite pizza in town, but we cannot get help. Do you accept orders in person at the curbside?

Megan: We apologize for the inconvenience with ordering. We have only 1 phone line with a call waiting. Judy answers all calls and with our limited number of dough balls it makes for not being able to meet all orders. We do take walk ups but…

Do you offer vegan cheese for your pizzas or calzones?

Sorry but we don't

Hi Walter - Is there a schedule for when you have bread and focaccia available?

Ethan: I make them when we have extra dough which is unpredictable. Best to call when you want it and we can let you know if we can do it. Thanks. Walter/Judy

We were immediately impressed with the ambiance and our server who was super friendly as well as knowledgeable about the menu. She made great recommendations, let us taste the wine to ensure it was a good fit for us, and made sure we were taken care of. The pizza is an Italian style with thin crust that is less cooked than a typical American thin-crust pizza. All the ingredients were fresh and the menu was obviously crafted with care. We tried the Cherry Picker and the Espana which were both unique combinations that were well balanced and flavorful. To drink we tried the Lambrusco, a fruity but not sweet sparkling red wine, and the Hugo spritz which was very well executed. For dessert we had the Cioccolato Budino which was a dense, creamy and rich mousse covered in caramel chocolate cookie crumbs and homemade whipped cream. My only complaint is that I shared instead of getting my own.

I opted for the following food items: * Bowl of Minestrone Soup ($7.50): a hearty vegetable soup with a tomato-based broth. Served with house-made bread. * Vegetable Lasagna ($17.50): Prepared with layers of pasta sheets, béchamel, ricotta, spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, marinara sauce, parmesan, and mozzarella. Served with house-made bread. First and foremost, I experienced satisfaction with every bite of the food. The soup was so warm and comforting with the fresh vegetables. The bread was a nice complement to soak up the tomato broth. The Lasagna was absolutely delicious. The portion of the slice was generously huge, and the taste was on point, especially with the personal request of extra marinara sauce (I always love extra sauce on pastas in general). The hospitality from all staff members was so amiable and attentive. They ensured that I had everything I needed during the dining experience. For both my soup and pasta, I was given the topping of freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The interior of the restaurant was small, yet cozy, with a welcoming feel for families. The Italian-themed decor was a beautiful touch to the restaurant. The inside of the restroom was clean. Lastly, the lunch menu offered affordable prices. Overall, La Cucina Italian Eatery exceeded expectations in my book! From the filling portions of food to the spectacularly kind service, I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. We arrived at 5 pm as soon as they opened, and three people were there waiting outside..they headed to the bar, we headed inside the restaurant. They gave us a nice table of two in the back and the music was amazing with a serious old school feel...I think finding a restaurant that still embraces the past is getting harder to find these days. Our waitress brought some fresh bread to the table as we ordered two beers from the menu. I noticed that this Yelp does not have wine listings anywhere, so I snapped some photos for wine lovers to get an idea on selection and price point. I admit that I looked at the actual menu and already knew what I wanted before I stepped foot in the restaurant....ricotta filled ravioli in a butter sage sauce....yes please! Hub thought he was going to get the fettuccini, but at the last moment went for the spaghetti bolognese. Both our dishes arrived and they looked amazing...Hub was taken by surprise that two meatballs were on his dish...I guess we didn't read the details, but the sauce was still heartily filled with meat...and he ended up eating the meatballs anyway. Both of us cleaned our dishes. As we got the final bill, we applauded the waitress with how much we liked it, and she informed us that the owner was back there doing all the cooking. Situated on 4th, just off of McCarran, Johnny's is easily accessible from the West side of town. There was plenty of parking, which was nice. The restaurant has a old school vibe to it. Rich dark woods and a broody air to it. Legit. On the recommendation of our server, we started with the Garlic Bread. OMG. Was this delicious. A must order in my book. We also had the Polenta Pomodoro e Carciofo. Delicious Polenta, formed in a loaf then topped with grilled artichoke, tomatoes, mozzarella and topped with a white truffle oil. The Polenta wasn't for everyone but I personally throught it was delicious. The mozzarella gave the Polenta a rich savoriness that I enjoyed. The Artichoke brought a nice finishing taste to the dish. My wife ordered the Petrale Sole. A Grana Padano crusted fillet of Petrale Sole served with lemon-cream sauce, accompanied with angel hair pasta with fresh tomatoes & basil. I sampled the Sole, it was light, flavorful and delicious, with a nice snap of the outer crust. Nice. One friend ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo. You know you're in an authentic Italian restaurant when the pasta is homemade. Served with housemade fettuccine with generous serving of butter, cream, & Grana Padano Cheese. Then topped with hand grated Mozzarella. This dish sounded and looked amazing but if I'm being honest I would have preferred a more creamy finish to the Alfredo. The dish (sauce) just seemed very heavy. Another friend had the Spaghetti Bolognese. For an Italian restaurant to be good, you have to do the basics to perfection, in my humble opinion and Johnny's did not disappoint. While I did not personally try the spaghetti with meat sauce. The couple sharing the dish seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Of course, the Spaghetti is homemade. Another dish was the Pollo al Raggio. A breaded boneless chicken breast with lemon, capers, mushrooms then topped with a white wine sauce and served with penne marinara. Johnny's does just a great job with breaded dishes. A nice crispiness on the initial bite but the meat is still delicate and juicy. Now I appreciate that I was at an Italian Restaurant but what can I say, I wanted a steak. The Steak is a 12 oz Certified Angus Beef N.Y Steak aged for 28 days, then marinated in olive oil & herbs and served with a creamy polenta. I gotta say, this was one good steak. Cooked to perfection, it was perfect. Chef's Kiss. It was nice to finish my meal with the same delicious Polenta that we started the evening with. Celebrating a birthday on this evening, a generous portion of desserts were ordered. Starting with the Tiramisu. I gotta say this was a really good Tiramisu. Sometimes bakers can get carried away with the Chocolate. My compliments to the Chef, this was the perfect blend of Lady Fingers, espresso and brandy and then finished with delicate dusting of chocolate and a proper dollop mascarpone. Next was the Pecan Ball. We had such high hopes for this dessert. Vanilla ice cream rolled in pecans and covered with hot fudge. In the end, this was nothing to write home about and way too expensive for what you got. This will be a hard pass for our next visit. The birthday girl ordered an Affogato. Which is Vanilla ice cream with a shot of hot espresso. If you enjoy that espresso flavor, this is the dessert for you. I don't like talking badly about the wait staff because they are the amongst the hardest working people. That said, for an elegant restaurant with the history of Johnny's, I was expecting more. Our waitress, while always polite just seemed a bit annoyed that she had to take care of us, like she was doing us a favor. We told her that we were celebrating a special birthday, asking if the birthday girl would get a complementary dessert. "We don't do complimentary desserts here". Okay fair enough. Often its not what you say but how you say it. Johnny's you can do better. Reflecting on the evening, everything was quite good. For a restaurant of Johnny's stature amongst the locals, I gotta say I was expecting more. Don't get me wrong, the food and desserts were all quite good, but I just wanted a bit more.

Fresh, decent quantity, and with dressing on the side. Two Cesar Salads - Our guests enjoyed this. $5 upcharge each. Cups of Minestrone Soups - Good. Cup of Egg Drop Soup - One of our guests wanted to try this; $5 upcharge. Linguine & Clams - Both in white and red sauce. My choice was the red sauce. I kept forgetting that this comes with BABY clams as I prefer larger clams, and actually if it was still in the shell, that would be an extra plus. NOTE to self, do not keep getting this... Eggplant Parmigiana - Home run, both ladies that got this loved it! Huge slices of eggplant. Baked and fried well. Eggplant Parmigiana with Grilled Chicken - WOW, generous portions. I think my wife took ¾ of her dish home... She got another two meals out of it. Sauteed Calamari Steak - This looked good, I might get it next time. Our newest addition to our group. She also took half her entree home. Grilled Prawn Picatta - Not a large quantity, but because all of us (except one) are light eaters, our guest still took half home. Another good entree. I will also add this to my list for next time. Special Chicken Pomodoro - Decent portions, my buddy devoured this. He is a good eater. One of the few in our group, lol. Dessert, Tiramisu - This was really good. We should have ordered a second one... And to wash it all down, I got a glass of Italian white wine which I really did not enjoy... Atmosphere - Double storefront. We seemed to always end up sitting in the second room but not today! I liked that they had a bar in each room. Table, booth, or bar seating. Two unisex restrooms. Plenty of parking. See pictures for business hours. Open 6 days a week; closed Mondays. Service - Good. We had a leisurely 2 hour dinner and never felt rushed. We were catching up with our good friends and new friends. Price - $323 + generous tips. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1990 as Davos; we have been customers for a very long time. Glad we are back and introducing our friends to your restaurant. Mid 1990 - Coco Pazzo, then renamed to Panevino. 2000 - Zozo's.

Very happy to find a good lasagna where you can choose from having simple marinara or a bolognese sauce. We chose the bolognese and it was a perfect addition to the cheese lasagna. Plenty of cheese and sauce, the cheese pull was crazy. The veal Marsala was delicious, tender, and had great flavor. The sauce was rich in flavor somewhat lemony with plenty of mushrooms and coated the pasta perfectly. The pasta seemed to be very fresh and had great texture. We arrived 20 minutes after their 5 pm opening without reservations on a Friday and we had the option to choose the bar area which was great for us. The drinks were delicious. The basil mojito was very refreshing. The old fashioned was perfect and traditional. Great waiter and attentive. Helped me choose and offered me a good drink. Good Italian restaurant with a semi casual atmosphere.

Had a group dinner here. I'm not a wine drinker, but many enjoyed the selection…read more The lasagna bolognese had decent flavor. One coworker enjoyed her mushroom filled pasta in cream sauce, another coworker had steak and did not care for it--but you're at an Italian restaurant, not a steakhouse. All the dishes were HUGE portions, so you will not go hungry. Pass on the chocolate mousse--it was grainy and unappealing. Service was top notch and made up for some of the meal's shortcomings.
