Came here on high praise from several friends from NE China who grew up with BBQ like this and said it also takes inspiration from North Korean style. It also seems this is one of the few places in socal with a license to cook with charcoal indoors, which is a bit of a bummer. Place was not too busy when we went but the center it's in is a bit small and can be tough to park. The service is pretty typical for a Chinese place. I found them more attentive than average honestly and they were always available when we flagged them down which I can't say for a lot of places, so service was overall good in my opinion. Place is AYCE, two person minimum, 2 hour time limit but are generous. You can get water or hot/cold wheat tea which was good, similar to barley tea. They can change out your grill at any time and add charcoal if the fire starts to die down, which you'll want since you want to be cooking meat quick over a high heat to make the most of your time here and get the best cook on your meat. To me the standouts were the beef tongue, boneless beef shortrib, and this cold cut you don't cook that I forget the name of. The beef tongue particularly really had everything going for it. Great balance of flavor between fat and muscle, a little chew but not too much like some bad tongue has. Super thin so fast to cook and easy to eat. Everything else was good but nothing KBBQ doesn't have a better version of (looking at you marinated beef). The charcoal flavor is gonna be a unique element so take that as you will. I'm told in China every place like this has its own 'signature sauce' and I guess the one here is the sesame sauce that is quite sweet, creamy, and perfectly thin for dipping. I followed the pro here and added green onions, cilantro, vinegar, and soy sauce to taste and it helped balance out the flavors for me but I still found myself preferring to eat the meat on its own most of the time which was a bummer as dipping between sauces is a nice way to change things up as you eat the same cuts of meat for 2 hours. The shortrib is incredibly juicy and delicious. I found the steak cuts my least favorite as they were a bit tough and lacking flavor. If you pay in cash you'll get a 16oz cup of their INCREDIBLE yogurt so I highly recommend, but you also get small cups of this at the end of your meal. It has a high fresh acidity like freshly squeezed lime juice balanced with sweetness that really makes this yogurt bangarang and super addicting. So much so I bought two things to go and wish I got more! Owner was a total sweetheart too. Def a great place to hit especially for the charcoal element and world-class yogurt but otherwise my favorite KBBQ spots are still gonna be my go-to for everything else. read more

Wish I had looked up the reviews of this place before stopping by. I was turned away for being a one person diner. They told me it was a minimum of two people in order to dine there. They were not even busy and only had four people dining there when I walked in at 2 pm and I was so hungry that I'm sure I could have ate for two and didn't mind paying for the price of two. Not a bad place. Only problem I have is when you are waiting around for more charcoal since you have to wait about 20 minutes. Meat quality is okay not the greatest but not the worst one out there. I enjoyed the beef tongue and the boneless short rib one the most. Cold noodles are also good here. They give you the sesame sauce and this cumin chili powder spice right when you sit. Location isn't the biggest so make sure you get there before the dinner rush. And not the greatest for big parties. This is my second time at the restaurant and to be fair, it's a decent place with pros and cons. First the price definitely increased and we were given this cheese+milk+sweet corn appetizer that felt out of place for a bbq (esp chinese) restaurant. Some tables didn't even bother to open the container. The service was quick and helpful, but don't expect the happy-go-lucky waiters at American/Italian restaurants that goes above and beyond. I felt like the waiters definitely optimize for efficiency, and getting things done. Lastly, I really like the mixed veggie salad with squid AND cold noodle! I love me a charcoal bbq! The flavors are enhanced with the Smokey charcoal flavor. The gave out really big portions which is nice but at the same time not really. We were pretty much full after the first round but managed to sneak in another round and an order of clams. The ribeye was nice and tender and dipping it into the cumin just made my tastebuds dance. Chicken cartilage was top tier! I honestly would come back just for that. As for the sides, it was nice and spicy. The pickled cabbage was the spiciest. Overall this place was pretty good, the only downside is the fact that they don't really give you plates. Which was confusing, but we ordered some veggies and used those as plates lol. Came here by 7:00 pm on a Thursday and it was packed! But only one party was in front of us, so the wait time was not long. They have you photograph the menu and take that to your table. This place always makes the surrounding area smell amazing. Makes sense since there is charcoal heating up the meat at this restaurant. I went in on a Saturday evening with my girlfriend as we were wanting a date night. Walked in and there was a waitlist but we only waited about 10 mins. Of the bat, the smell inside is AMAZING. The menu is simple. All you can eat for about $40 a head. I ordered a large beer which was amazing with our food. We were full with just one round of meat. Service was quick and pleasant. I highly recommend it. Has a feel similar to Korean BBQ. But this is Chinese charcoal BBQ. I think I've made a colossal switch. Plus, they gave us this yogurt desert-drink which was so good. Pretty decent spot for Chinese Charcoal BBQ. The reviews in the past complained about service and tipping issues. My family and I had a different experience. Came on a Sunday night around 5:30-6:00 pm, and the place was packed. Fortunately for us, they still had a couple of available tables as it was freezing cold outside. The wait to be seated was about 10-15 minutes. Upon sitting down, the waiters and servers kind of expect you to know Chinese, but if you start speaking English, you'll notice quite quickly that most of them are quite fluent at it. Ordering food was really easy. You can choose up to 5 dishes at a time. And they bring out the food very quickly. Unfortunately, we still had to wait for them to bring out the charcoal and the grill itself, which took much longer than ordering our food and drinks. Service overall was good. When the fire was too big, the waiters knew to bring an extra grill for us without us asking for one. Or to change grills when we have overused one for too long. However, there were small things overlooked. For instance, refilling water and taking away trash. But they were kind of busy, so I wouldn't nock down a star for this. As we wind down to the end, we were thinking of scenarios of servers stopping us because of the whole tipping issues that past reviews brought up. Let me just say it did not happen. However, we did have one waiter blatantly stare at the receipt as we asked for more napkins. So it could have happened? Who knows? The overall experience was good for a chilly night. They also provide a cumin spice for flavoring. THIS IS NOT A KOREAN BBQ. It's a charcoal BBQ restaurant run by Chinese people. The service and seating needs improvement. They tried to put the 8 of us in a booth (4 on one side and 3 on the other side with a chair at the end). I was like WHAT!!! We would be so cramped that we wouldn't be able to move our elbows. Finally we waited for two tables that were next to each other so we would have more space. The nice part of the experience is you cook everything over charcoal and it does taste better IMO. They'll add more charcoal if you need more heat for cooking. They do bring out the food quickly when you order. 2 hour time limit to eat. Tucked in a small plaza somewhere in Monterey Park. Try to be here during off peak time.... It gets very busy and you might have to wait long time. It's very similar to Korean bbq but has touch of Chinese flavor. They serve bowl of sesame sauce and spicy powder to dip the meats. It was very unique match but tasted very good. Also came with some Korean side dishes to accompany your meats. All the meats were very tender and delicious. Grilling over charcoal tasted even better. We really enjoyed complimentary spicy cucumber with squid, too. Servers were all very attentive and quick. This is NOT KBBQ. It is more like xinjiang bbq. It is charcoal bbq with a cumin spice mix. Price for weekday dinner: $20.99 AYCE. Needs at least 2 people. Basically only has options for beef, pork, and a couple seafood options. There is no lamb or chicken. Everything has sugar added to it and tastes super sweet. Except the dessert, which is tart like Korean yogurt drink. They barely speak English, and haven't gotten the idea of how to run procedurally, yet. It may not be sanitary or convenient. They bring out raw meat before the charcoals are ready. The charcoal grill is only large enough to cook one order of meat at a time, so the raw meat may sit for half an hour before it gets cooked. If other people are waiting for their charcoal, you have to wait. They can only prepare one pot of charcoal at a time. They don't give you plates to eat from. They take half an hour to get you a spoon for the soup. They give you the soybean stew (which they incorrectly call miso) instead of the Cold Noodle Soup you order. They accidentally think your table ordered two soybean stews, when you actually ordered none. They don't understand English well enough to take your soybean stew away, so you are forced to eat it when you don't really want it. When you get the cold noodle soup, it has sugar added to it, and the noodles are too hard. They aren't chewy like they should be. Some items are actually pretty tasty. I liked the Pork Skin Aspic was interesting. It was pork skin pieces in a Agar Jelly. The Tri Tip and Pork Belly Skin (which I don't think was actually skin) were tasty. read more

Went again tonight around 645 and got seated immediately. Left at 840 and there were at least 20 people waiting. I made a mistake thinking it was a Korean AYCE. It's actually Chinese based but it's still very similar. The service was fine, several reviews make notice they bring out some of the meat before the coals, yes that happened but by less than two minutes, no big deal. No alcohol, but that's ok. People have also made comments about things not being fresh. They seem to be mistaken, from the beef, shrimp, younger, enoki mushrooms, sweet potato, pork belly, cold noodle soup, tri tip, ALL was fresh, presented nicely and all brought in a very reasonable amount of time. Overall, a very tasty meal with good friends. People need to be reminded it is not Ruth's Chris steakhouse, the service can always be better but it's more than fine. Geez. read more
