First time trying the infamous Mama Lus. We ordered Salt n Pepper Pork Chops, Shrimp and Eggs, Chinese Broccoli, Pan Fried Chicken Noodles, Pork Soup Dumplings and Beef Wraps and Fried RICE. Pork Chops, Soup Dumpling and Chinese Broccoli were fine. The soup dumplings were ok but why was it so sweet and it a an odd peanut flavor? The rest of the items were bland! Just like the other yelp reviews said. Bland and no wok flavor. The service was also unremarkable and often times rude. Just because it's busy doesn't mean you ignore our table and treat only the Chinese and Asian customers better. Doubtful to return with so many other SGV options. It's too bad because so many people recommended this restaurant. Fix the food and work on customer service. read more

This is my 3rd time at a Mama Lu restaurant and I still left unimpressed. I gave a generous 3 star because while all the dishes had no taste they were all presented really well and have large portions. Service was ok. Lots of servers walking around the place but hard to flag them down or get their attention as they are so busy swishing by doing stuff. The place is really small and have tons of chairs outside the restaurant corridor for people waiting in line to get in. I can understand the draw to this place. But for me I like my food to be well seasoned. I guess people who come here tend to customize the taste by using all the condiments provided on the table. Sadly this is not for us. After realizing we would take forever to eat at the Sam Woo x Kogi collab, a friend recommended we visit Mama Lu's as an alternative. Mama Lu's didn't disappoint. The portions were huge and the juicy dumplings were in fact juicy. Now I'm used to just doing Din Tai, but these dumplings were good and bigger and had more soup. Sure Din Tai might look prettier, at the end of the day they just have to taste good. My family will definitely be back to visit Mama Lu's for more dumplings. read more

In my opinion this location tastes the best but the parking lot situation could be a disaster with the people that don't know how to park/yield during dinner rushes, if you know what I mean.. I haven't dinned in this spot in over a decade but still grab take-out frequently. Honey Garlic Pork Chops -our new fixation. I haven't seen any other restaurants have this flavor. Pork always comes out pretty moist and tender. Perfectly crispy outside. Deep fried minced garlic for all my garlic lovers. Indonesian Fried Rice -pretty good. The protein in it is cooked well, beef is tender and shrimp is crisp. Just the right amount of sliced jalapenos but not too much that kids can't handle it. my friend and i stopped by here for lunch - the inside was nice and we got seated right away - we got the chive & pork dumplings and the spicy wontons (w/ pork & shrimp). the dumplings (4.3/5) was yummy and flavorful, our favorite out of the two dishes. the spicy wontons (4.1/5) weren't that spicy but it was also flavorful with the shrimp and pork combo. we did use the spicy sauce from the wontons as a dip for our dumplings and it made it taste yummier. - although the food was yummy, the service was slow. it took a while for them to not only ask for our orders but it took a long time (~30 minutes) for our food to come out. the table that ordered after us got their food before us and they had a bigger party...the servers that were cleaning the tables even looked over at our table and saw that we didn't get our food yet. we got our wontons first and then ~10 minutes got our wontons which made the overall service very slow. overall, this was a decent place to try out during lunchtime. read more

Y'all. I only got one picture of our meal, that's how you know we devoured it! Parking is plentiful here, as there is a plaza along the back side. They have a long hallway of chairs for those that are waiting. If you are waiting to be seated, you must take a slip of paper with a number on it and sign-in. Honestly? Turnover is pretty fast although it's consistently busy. We ordered the hot and sour soup, the coconut buns (steamed), wontons, XLB, and a meat dish that is escaping my mind. Amazing restaurant, exceeded my expectations. My friend and I drove up from Long Beach to have dinner here and our appetites were satisfied. From the beef wraps to the honey garlic pork chops, great flavors in every bite. The fish with seaweed were nice and crisp. Soup dumplings were amazing served hot, one bite into the dumpling and you get the delicious soup broth. Service was nice. We dined around 8pm and had our food ready almost immediately after placing our order, at most 5-10 minutes. The dining room is nice, not too packed when we went, and the environment was pleasant. We came to this area on New Year's Day to have dimsum because I was really craving that hole in the wall, homemade Chinese food during the cold weather. After checking the wait at two other places, I saw this place and remembered I've been wanting to come here. I was pleasantly surprised at how fast we got seated, ordered and got the food! The food itself was delicious, I love the crispy pan fried noodles and some places put way too much gravy that it gets too soggy. They had the perfect ratio. My mom and I decided to come to the og mama lu's as it's been a hot minute since our last time at this shop as we've really get takeout at the other locations nowadays, but I digress. Here's some of the foods we ordered: crab + dried scallop egg white fried rice: my mom wanted to choose this as it was just the two of us so I acquiesced. It definitely tasted very bland. The emphasis of the dish is to highlight the umami concentrated in the dried scallops complemented by subtle crab flavors. It felt like there was barely any dried scallops used in the dish. salt & pepper shrimp: the shrimp was definitely not fresh because fresh shrimp would have a snap to it when you bite into it. The preparation of the shrimp could be better; I would say the bare minimum would be to open the back so that they can remove the vein of the shrimp while keeping the shell on to preserve the shrimp flavor. While I don't think this is a staple dish of mama lu's I would say it could be prepared better. While we went during the non rush time, the og place feels very nostalgic to me. Definitely the clientele is definitely more on the older folks side now. The servers were generally rather cordial at a chinese restaurant. parking wise there's plenty in the plaza behind it. read more

It's one of those restaurants where I don't even need to look at the menu anymore--I already know it's going to hit every time. I went the other day with a group of friends and we ordered everything above minus the scallion pancake, and added chili wontons and string beans in XO sauce. Everything was a hit across the table. We actually came here after going to Din Tai Fung the week prior, because we left DTF feeling pretty unsatisfied. I told my friends this place is a little similar in menu but a smaller business--and honestly, much better as well as cheaper. I'd even say the soup dumplings here are better. We were able to order double the food for about half the price! The string beans were okay but not my favorite dish here, so I'll probably try a different vegetable next time. That said, the Indonesian fried rice was a secret standout among my friends. None of us are really "fried rice people," but this one converted us. I think it's because it's beef-based--super flavorful and comforting without being heavy. I'm personally a sucker for a good curry noodle, so I still really enjoyed the Singapore-style vermicelli. My friends said it was good too; they're just not huge noodle people in general. And the unanimous favorite of the night? The fried pork in spicy salt. Ranked number one by all four of us--crispy, savory, and impossible to stop eating. Beyond the food, I love this restaurant because it's small and cozy. It feels comfortable and welcoming, not overwhelming. I've been to their Pasadena and City of Industry locations as well, but Monterey Park is still my favorite by far. I would of given them a 5 stars except that after I sat down in the front, they had a reservation for 26 people, while they were setting up, they already sat me down in the front for 5 people, they wanted me to move allll the way to the back corner. I didn't say anything and they started talking in Cantonese saying that I didn't want to move and that they already sat me down. So they just let me stay at the front, one of the ladies gave me a mad stare when I didn't get up and move to the back lol. After a couple of minutes, my boss and his friend came in and I told him what happened, he didn't say anything, he just greeted them like he always does. After we ordered a couple of items, my 2 other coworkers showed up and as the food was coming out, the big party of people started to come in, they practically took the whole middle party of the dining room, it was a young crowd like college students from Japan, they all Japanese. As we were eating, more customers showed up, the place was packed and some were still waiting. It got busy. To start off, we ordered the green onion pancakes, it was super thin and crispy, didn't really have any green onions in it, is ok. I ordered their seafood udon noodles, it was pretty good, not much seafood, is just pieces of fish, fish cakes and shrimp, no octopus or mussels clams. The noodles were a little soggy. We also ordered the xl bao, is juicy, got some soup in it. Be careful eating those, the juice will splatter out if you're not careful. The pan fried pork buns were good, I like the dough but the meat wasn't flavorful enough. They do have soy sauce and vinegar for you at the table. Is confusing because both bottles look the same, they both look like soy sauce lol. My coworker got On Choy, is a seasonal vegetable, is crunchy, not too much garlic, is refreshing. Al so got the braised E-Fu noodles, is ok, is just chewy noodles with mushrooms, I don't get what is so appealing about that noodles. But is one of my coworkers favorite. Then there's the hot and sour soup, is sour, I haven't had that soup in ages. But all my coworkers seem to like it, they said that this soup is made better here than anywhere else. Is good but not as silky as I like it. It feels like one of the ingredients is missing from that soup, I don't know what is called but is like a brown straw and is dehydrated, is like a dry vegetable. The workers are attentive and they take away your empty plate from your table to make room. They are super quick when you call them for somethings. I would recommend coming to this restaurant, the food is good, the service is good, the restaurant is a little small, trying to fit so many people in, makes it kinda tight. There's a mama lu's by my house in West Covina, the Haven City food court, is on the end of the plaza by the Thai restaurant. I haven't tried there yet but maybe someday since my favorite restaurant, the Lobster and Steak moved to the Monterey Park area. This is my favorite authentic Chinese restaurant in LA to eat at! The portions are generous for the price point and the food is absolutely delicious! The meal comes with salted peanuts as free appetizer and Chinese tea. My go to's and the three MUSTS to get here are: 1) Pork Chop with Spicy Salt (5/5): This is like a salt and pepper version of pork chops. This is a HIT to all my friends I bring here to eat at. The pork is perfectly fried and seasoned with the right amount of flavorful salt and white pepper. It does come with bone-in but that just means more flavor. It's perfectly fried with a thin layer of cornstarch so the batter to meat ratio is perfection! When you bite in, the pork is so tender and flavorful that pairs nicely with white rice with the saltiness of this dish. The best savory dish! 2) Sautéed String Beans and Eggplant with Minced Meat (5/5): This is the perfect veggie and meat dish that is packed with flavor. They literally make the best string beans (NOT Din Tai Fung) and eggplant here. Their string beans are the perfect, crisp bite but also tender covered with sautéed garlic. Their eggplant is soft and has a savory, sweet sauce that is covered with the sautéed garlic as well. They put minced meat which I believe is chicken in this dish and it pairs so well with the veggies. Everything is covered with their brown sauce that is savory, spicy, sweet, and tangy. 3) Salted Fish & Chicken with Tofu (5/5): This unique dish is for the people who love salted fish which has a pungent, savory, umami taste to it. Their tofu mixed with their salted fish and chicken is to die for. The tofu is so soft and soaks in all the salted fish flavor of the sauce and pieces which are spread out in the fish. The soft, steamed chicken is also so flavorful and adds a more dense texture to the dish as the tofu and salted fish are very tender. I was in town for work and had to check this place out. I met a friend for a late dinner. The location is on a busy street and has vibrant black and white decor. Most of the many booths and tables were full, even though we were there later than I usually eat. We each had the chance to review the menu online beforehand, and had selected our options before we arrived. That saved us some time. We ordered a variety of appetizers and dumplings. There was nothing that we didn't like, and even though we left with full stomachs, we also left with plenty of left-overs to enjoy again later. This is a spot that I have come by very often every now and then for the past few years. I do think the food here is pretty affordable and is authentic Chinese home food. I ordered the beef wrap for the first time couple days ago, and I was mind-blown. I dare say that it was the best beef wrap I have had in a while. The skin wrapper was crispy and the meat was juicy, paired perfectly with the sauce. I also ordered the pork and chives dumpling and the spicy wonton, which are my go to every time. (If you have to pick one btw, I'd go with pork and chives dumplings over the spicy wonton). Another dish I really like from this spot is their stir-fried tofu with mushrooms. Simple dish, but flavorful! Anyhow, their service is standard, and the place is not the cleanest, but still very decent to dine. The service however really ruined our whole experience. We had to ask four times for water, three times for boxes and waited almost 20 minutes just for them to take our check. There was 0 attentiveness, and just flagging them down to ask for something was ridiculously difficult. On top of that, we'd ask for water and have to ask again and again as they would forget. The prices are very reasonable, the dining space is big and comfortable, and the flavors are super consistent. It is perfect for a casual family meal or getting together with friends. Definitely a miss today. The salt pepper shrimp has definitely changed as there was a batter on it. Normally salt pepper shrimp doesn't have such a thick batter. The seafood crispy noodles had no flavor. The eggplant with garlic sauce lacked flavor as well. The juicy pork dumplings aka xiao long bao were the best today. The reason why we enjoyed it the past was because their flavors were authentic to true Chinese food. Unfortunately, today it was more Americanized.
