Kimchi pancake had great flavor. Sides brought out were good. Fried calamari was way over cooked and could not be chewed. We did try and tell them that and a woman came out, took the plate and tried one off our plate right in front of us and then told us "that is normal." We said it was pretty tough compared to other times and she kept telling us "no, it's normal" until we just said okay to make it stop. Ramen had good flavor. Beef bulgogi was tender. Hard to believe this place can stay in business. We ordered a bowl of the Galbi soup which costed $28! I asked the woman why it was so expensive and she replied "Special Korean Beef". When we opened it at our hotel, we found not much soup, 95% noodles and only a few scraps of beef. The only saving grace is that the decor is straight out of a David Lynch film from the early 90's...and there is a bowling alley upstairs with a beautifully vintage late-1970's aesthetic. Got Uber Eats from this place two nights in a row. Got the ja jang myun and the soybean stew. Both times it tasted great and was nice and hot when it arrived. Only thing was that the first night the soybean stew had small whole fish in it which added umami flavor wonderfully! And the second night, the soybean stew had beef in it, rather than fish. This restaurant makes the best food in Fairbanks . The service is prompt and polite and the quality of food is beyond compare. The bulgogi was absolutely delicious and the price was reasonable. The banchan (seasoned vegetables) was exquisite and was the perfect complement to the main dish. The staff will do what they can to accommodate your dietary needs and preferences so don't hesitate to talk to the server. The restaurant is located in the basement under a bowling alley so once to are seated you will forget that fact the ambiance is the perfect complement to the food. Poor service. Ok food. Overall it's more like a place where desperate tourists would go. Will never visit again (the owner probably didn't expect us to either). We arrived and no one seated us. Coming from the Bay Area in California, overall I was pretty disappointed in the quality of Asian food in Fairbanks. However, Seoul Gate was one of the better places. It is a bit pricey but the taste of the food is solid and the portion size is large. Jajangmyung is one of my favorite Korean dishes (it is like a sweeter version of the Chinese Zha Jiang Mian). The jajangmyung at Seoul Gate didn't disappoint. I didn't finish all of it and took some leftovers home only because I had also ordered dumplings as an appetizer and the portion size was large. My friend had the bibimbop and thought it was pretty good but not outstanding. We both really enjoyed the dumplings. Service was fast and staff wore masks. The tables are very spread out. This is a good place to come if you're craving decent Asian food while in Fairbanks. There is easy parking outside, and there is a small Asian market in the same building as well. read more

Don't judge by the outside. By the looks, it does not impress at all. You go downstairs for both the Korean and Japanese sushi restaurant. However, the ambiance is genuine with cool old school kpop karaoke music videos playing that reminded me of my old college days! The food was really really good. A surprising gem of a Korean restaurant in Fairbanks, Alaska! I brought my in-laws, who live in southern California, on holiday to Alaska. I was hoping to find a decent Korean restaurant for them, and I knew their standards were high, but even they loved the authentic food quality at Seoul Gate! The servers are busy, but they work hard and provide good service with a smile. The dolsot bibimbap (hot stone mixed rice dish), soon tofu soup, and galbi tang soup were all flavorful and delicious. The banchan side dishes contained surprisingly fresh vegetables. The kimchee pajeon pancake was a bit doughy, not my favorite. The ja jang myun noodles were very good, though perhaps a bit salty. My in-laws enjoyed their yukgae jang-- they were happy to return to Seoul Gate for a second meal on our brief visit to Fairbanks! read more

Seoul Gate is located in a "shack" so to speak surrounded by similarity named establishments. You start by entering the door where you're greeted with stairs. They are located downstairs, turn right, sharp left, and boom, you're there. If you go downstairs and keep straight you're now entering the grocery store. When we got in there was line because the Korean Aunty was seated and busy talking to her coworkers. When she noticed the line the look so pure shock and regret made up for us waiting for 1 minute. She profusely apologized and seated us. We sat by the entrance of the sushi restaurant and karaoke. Are you still with me? We headed dow stairs where we bypassed a grocery store, mazed through the hallway and sharp turns to enter Seoul Garden, and was seated next to the hallway entrance of a sushi restaurant which eventually led to the karaoke business. Any who, we ordered the bimbimbap pork tofu soup, seafood pancake, and two Alaskan beers, we called them "burrs" as it seemed fitting for the weather. The bimbimbap came out in a huge stone bowl, seafood pancake was typical of any Korean restaurant, and the tofu soup was ok. It could've used a little bit more seasoning. Overall, if you're craving something Asian (it's slim pickin's) this would be a good place to visit. The sides were bomb though. They were made in-house, not prepackaged which is always appreciated. My husband and I were visiting Fairbanks and after a long day of traveling, it was really nice to have dinner delivered to our hotel room! When the waitress took our order she informed us that she had a table of 22 people coming within the hour. So we were prompted to order in an efficient manner. Seoul Gate Restaurant was a fantastic, authentic Korean spot in an unassuming warehouse-esque building. Surrounded by aquariums and fun knickknacks, the vibe is cozy and fun. To start, we were given a variety of small plate appetizers (for free). I absolutely loved their house-made kimchi. We got a second plate of it that I used on my bibimbap (such a great combination of flavors). The various appetizer plates were so tasty and really got me excited for my entree: bibimbap with shrimp. The bibimbap arrived in a perfectly round and shallow bowl that made it super easy to spread around the many ingredients (that all complemented one another so well). The bowl cooks the ingredients (rice, vegetables, shrimp) as you eat it which is so fun and delicious. I added soy sauce to mine as well as oyster sauce (very sweet and thick consistency but adds a great sweetness to the dish if you're in that mood versus the more classic spicy). It was super filling (plus the appetizer plates). I was overall very pleased with my experience! The service was consistent (it was a one-woman show). Would love to come back and try one of their kimchi pancakes as the kimchi was just so delicious! read more

While in Fairbanks we thought we would try Korean food instead of our usual Thai food. We drove passed the building not sure if we wanted to go in. But thought we would give it a try. You go in and walk down a flight of stairs. It is adjoined to Seoul Gate Sushi. The six of us were seated at a table that was for 4 people. We asked to move which was no problem but surprised we weren't sat there in the first place. Each of us ordered a different dish and were all very pleased with how good it tasted. We were also given 8 side dishes which we devoured in no time. We requested more and the waitress brought us all 8 dishes more. We truly enjoyed the food. Soul Gate is located in an inconspicuous building that doesn't look like much on the outside. Signage will point you to several places: Soul Gate Restaurant, Soul Sushi, and Soul Grocery. To get to the restaurant, enter the door on the left, go downstairs and turn right. Follow the signs. We ordered beef bulgogi ($15), chicken bulgogi ($15), and crispy chicken. A variety of banchan (Korean appetizers) appeared. We nibbled until our main courses arrived. Each dish was served with white rice. Having had plenty of Korean food in my life and making it at home, this wasn't the best I've had. But this may be one of the few places where Korean food is available in a restaurant so there's not much to compare it to in Fairbanks. We got to restaurant about 45 mins before they closed and they were very welcoming. We ordered egg rolls and a pork pancake, not knowing that we were going to get additional sides to go with our meal. For our entrees we had the Korean BBQ and Sweet & Sour Shrimp. I also tried the plum tea and it was quite nice to have on a cold day. All the food was very good and cooked to order. The portions are huge, we had enough food to feed an entire family. The restaurant itself is in the bottom of the building and it is easy to get it confused with the Sushi restaurant next door. Tried to eat here the other night and won't even be back. Here's why: We sat ourselves and waited forever for anyone to bring over menus. I'm the time we waited, we noticed how disgustingly filthy this place truly is. Walking down to the door and seeing the nasty carpet stained the whole down should have been an indicator in what to expect. Then we sat next to fish and a turtle tank where those poor creatures habitats desperately needed some attention. The tables have items on them that were gross, and we decided that if this is the establishment appearance in front of the customers' faces, wonder how disgusting their kitchen might be! Came here for an early dinner yesterday. The location seems rather deserted, but perhaps that's just typical of how things appear in Fairbanks. I ordered a soon tofu soup and hubbie ordered a hot bibimbap. Both were not only delicious, but portions were just incredibly generous and out of the world. The banchan had a pretty good variety. My husband doesn't like the acidity that comes with a lot of the fermented banchan, but there were a few pickled items that were sweet and not particularly sour. Given the cold weather, we also asked for some hot tea, which despite not being gourmet (it was one of those ordinary teabags), it was just what we needed at the time. It was also complimentary. Judging from the outside of the building, this place is surprisingly great. I think a big part of that is just being in Fairbanks, since this place is stuck in the early 1980's and is frozen nearly all year, but still - it looks shady. Don't worry though, because it's worth it. I got tolsot bibimbap (hot stone pot bibimbap) and it came is a much wider bowl than usual (likely from a certain area of Korea), but it was actually helpful in cooking the food as I ate it. The panchan (small side dishes of kimchi and vegetables) was quite good, with the cucumber kimchi being some of the best I've ever had. If you haven't had Korean food for a while, come try this place and you'll be happy. Seriously though - just don't pay attention to the way it looks outside - come in and eat. read more
