Great service the restaurant decor and music is reminiscent of a place you'd happen upon in the islands away from the city. First place of this kind I've come across in my travels that had meat jun on the menu since first having it in Hawaii. Was perfect. Short ribs was a thicker cut only a little fat, no bones and delicious. BBQ Chicken was delicious. Fried rice ...you know the free option offered in lieu of white rice....was delicious (I know right?..) Mac salad...was a disappointment for me. Had a strong mustard taste unlike what it accustomed to with Hawaiian food. This was my option 3 mixed plate I ordered. I also opted for an order of lumpia...tasted / looked like frozen egg rolls....good for egg rolls, not really lumpia. Soup was provided...simple and good, but no clue of the kind lol. Try it. This review is a couple of months late but it's impact on my food life was monumental. Growing up in Louisiana and then moving to Tallahassee, Florida hadn't allowed me to experience Hawaiian cuisine. During my recent trip to Alaska, my party and I said we wanted to have a whack at something we never had before. My Mom always instilled in me to try things once because that's the only way you'll know if you do or do not enjoy something. Well we enjoyed Aloha BBQ. A LOT. They serve walloping portions. All three of us left with a take home box. What makes it even better is that the huge amount of food was extraordinary. I prefer to try regional and ethnic fare in the location of their origins but sometimes adulting doesn't allow that to be most convenient at particular times. When those are the circumstances, it's nice to know some restaurants will provide you with a wonderful entry into that world and in that regard, Aloha BBQ excelled. read more

The bbq combo plate had some great tender meat, I thought the meat Jun was interesting but kind of oily as it is cooked in egg batter. The person in my group that ordered the loco moco said it was heavy in gravy. Overall I would probably skip this place or perhaps it would have been better if we ate in person there. Popular by the locals in Alaska and recommended by nearby hotels, we decided to try it out despite being born, raised and currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. If you're coming from Hawaii to Vacation, don't expect the food to be the same. The Loco Moco seemed to be made of frozen hamburger meat and possibly a jar gravy with whatever was put inside of it. Mac Salad is never made with mustard and was a bit chewy. The Meat Jhun was definitely not what it tastes like back home, even the fast food Korean places never made it this way. I've never had Kim Chee prepared this way either, it reminds me of lightly pickled cabbage. The rice was either left in the cooker too long or wasn't made with enough water. Haupia was made with too much corn starch and sugar and the portion size was really small. Thankfully by the time the Haupia was served, it threw me into a laughing fit to the end of our experience. I gave it two stars because they were very friendly (as are nearly everyone else here in Alaska). If you moved from Hawaii to Fairbanks, Alaska and miss the food back home, this is probably the closest you'll get so don't let me stop you from trying it out. read more

Read a few reviews of places in Fairbanks and all seemed to have both good and bad reviews so was hard to decide. Ended up deciding on Aloha BBQ because I was curious was Kalua Pork which someone had commented on at another review site. Ordered a Combo consisting of Kalua Pork (BBQ pork with cabbage), teriyaki beef and steamed rice as I wanted to try out the supposedly Hawaiian style Kalia Pork. The Teriyaki beef was nothing you couldn't do yourself with some Beef, sliced onion a fry pan and a bottle of Teriyaki sauce but was ok. Unfortunately that was the highlight of the meal (unless you count the rice) The Kalua pork was pretty average. The Pork itself tasted almost as if it had been reheated by boiling it (would ppl even do that??) And the cabbage had very little flavour at all. It came with a small side of Mac and cheese which I am not a fan of anyway so I didn't try this. Overall I was disappointed with the meal as I was hoping that the kalua pork - something I was looking forward to trying - was going to be pretty good. read more

I spotted a vestige of Hawaiiana here in Fairbanks, Alaska, just because I wanted Thai cuisine next door, so I decided to check things out here also at the Aloha BBQ Grill. It was cool to come here and check things out. It was quite interesting to come across this place when I had been looking for something else. Just happened to be next door, so I ended up entering and checking out the menu. It was your typical set up though, local Hawaiian comfort food in the heart of interior Alaska. It was nice to be here, especially when I'm traveling and got a slice of home here. While I was craving some Thai cuisine, I ended up having something else here at Aloha BBQ Grill. Not that I was homesick or anything, but it was nice to be here. Aloha Grill BBQ Fairbanks reminded me of a small mom and pop operation back in Hawaii, in metro Honolulu. It was a small restaurant with a big heat that serves up delicious comfort foods found in the heart of Hawaii. I was here on a brisk Thursday afternoon and the moment was right. It was right after visiting a few of Fairbank's tourist attractions when I got hungry. Made a stop here and this is place reminded me of home. And so, I was here for maybe 15-20 minutes for a side order of French fries, since I was doing Thai food next door for a quick lunch. The service here was good and friendly, even though the lady owner was busy. The overall experience here at the Aloha BBQ Grill was quite cozy, small, and quite nice. It felt like I was back in Hawaii for a bit, but knowing that I was still in Fairbanks, Alaska was a real feeling too. Nostalgia and being homesick was not in my vocabulary at the time, but it helped me realize that Hawaii is a special place and I'm honored to be from there: born and raised, and of course, still living there. I talked to the lady owner and she said she is from Honolulu, which made me smile. It was definitely great and cool to meet an ex pat from the islands here in Fairbanks. I had cash, so I paid in that kind of payment versus credit cards this time around, just because I had the money at the time. Shocking, huh? They do take credit cards though, so you can use them as well as cash! Aloha BBQ Grill is located at 402 5th Avenue here in the heart of beautiful Fairbanks, Alaska. Parking here can be very tricky because of the fact that there's not much parking here since it is downtown Fairbanks and that's not seen that much either. But find parking right you can and it will be beneficial if you don't come during peak times. For the most part though, the experience here at Aloha BBQ Grill was very nostalgic and pleasant. It was nice to find a place that is reminiscent of days gone by but had a nice Hawaiian ambiance to it. While I only bought a side dish to what was going to be an epic lunch of Thai food and French fries, it was nice to come and visit here. As a resident from Hawaii, I can tell you everything is good here, especially when you have an ex pat owner who knows Hawaiian / local cuisine that's showcased in the islands on a daily basis. You would do well here and be fed well. The dishes offered is typical of what y I can find anywhere in Hawaii really. Local comfort food from Hawaii at its best, but still you're in the heart of interior Alaska. Be forewarned though! The prices here can be a little steep, just because I usually try to bargain hunt in daily life. But once I start to travel, all bets are usually off - especially when it came to dining. It can come as a little shocking, since Alaska does not have a sales taxes accessed here. However, Everything is worth it here. Come on down if you are in the area and sample the dishes of typical Hawaiian cuisine here in Fairbanks! I'd recommend coming here, if you are a fan and want t know more. Hubby was craving Hawaiian food so we had to stop in. Ordered: Spam fried noodles $8.95 Kalua pig plate $9.95 Adobo plate $10.95 The noodles was good. With mixed veggies. Huge plate. Ordeded it for our 19 month old since she loves noodles. The other plates came with 2 scoops rice, mac salad and kimchi. Both plates came with a cup of miso soup and 3 cubes of haupia squares. Miso soup served with seaweed and boiled onions. Soooo good. Haupia is water with coconut milk powder. Sooo good. Mac salad had a tad bit too much relish in it. Kimchi was good. Not spicy at all. Warning in advance - it does not look like much from the outside, but do not be put off. The inside not fancy but is clean and well kept. Family run establishment with friendly service, the restaurant shows pride of ownership. Meals come with a starter of miso soup, kimchi, and a creamy macaroni salad. The macaroni salad seemed to be more of a cream cheese type of base, rather than mayonnaise, which I liked quite a lot. We had kalua pork with white rice, teriyaki beef bowl, and BBQ short ribs (the kalua pork is easily enough for two). The BBQ short ribs were declared OK, but the kalua pork and teriyaki bowl were both a hit. I can't attest to the "authentic" factor, only that our meals were well prepared and tasty. I have to say, the beef broth/soup is the Best! Or, is it a French onion without the cheese or bread. The Mushroom Soy is what really causes the flavor to explode! Our first meal in Fairbanks and an easy walk from the Hotel. My wife's first trip to Alaska couldn't have started better! We ordered the Combo meal of Kahlua Pork, and BBQ Beef, shared between the two of us... as we have been to Hawaii many times and are cautious of the typical Hawaii volume of food. The Kimchi and Mac Salad arrived. The Kimchi is not fermented and not really very good. My wife doesn't do mayonnaise, but the mustard in the mix was interesting to taste. Okay coming from one Hawaiian, this place is decent. It's not authentic but it's close enough for me when I'm in Fairbanks. The combination plates we ordered were huge and delicious, sort of reminded me of rainbow drive in on Kapahulu Ave in Honolulu. I was doubtful at first glance of the facade and at second glance of the owner/cook but being the hardheaded Hawaiian I am I pressed on and to my delight it was quite an eye opening experience. My husband and I ate lunch here for the first time yesterday and I was impressed! We were one of two tables currently occupied. The service was extremely fast and the waiter checked on us multiple times throughout our lunch making sure we were satisfied and keeping our drinks full. I had the meat Jun and thought it was delicious. My husband ordered the garlic chicken and was not a fan of his dish because it was reminiscent of a Chinese dish with a sugary sauce on the chicken. I tried it and thought it was good but he didn't care for it because of how sweet it was. I found this place on Yelp, and I second all the good reviews. We were in downtown Fairbanks for lunch on a post cruise land excursion (day 6) and this was my favorite find since our cruise. If I had transportation, I would have returned. If I visit Fairbanks again, I would stop by here and recommend it to anyone visiting the area. The service was great. I went here on a whim after reading the reviews here on yelp (in town for business and looking for good food). I found the building and actually drove around the block 3 or 4 times debating if I should risk my health (the building is run down and looks dirty!). But, I trusted my yelpers. So, in I went... When I got in, I looked at the menu and found practically no vegetarian entrees. So, I consulted the waitress who also happened to be vegetarian, and she suggested a few things. I ended up with take out of cream cheese wontons and tofu noodle soup. I asked for sauce for the wontons, and the kid (son of owners) said that they were so good they didn't need any. I trusted him. Back at my hotel, I tried the cream cheese wontons. Not impressed at all. They were super sweet and had an artificial flavor. The skins were nice and had good texture, but the filling was "meh." So, I moved on to the noodle soup. The soup was good, but it was a bit bland. But honestly, I couldn't enjoy the flavor because I kept thinking about how dirty everything felt to me inside the restaurant. I kept thinking about bugs and other critters in a place where my food was prepared. Now, it might be 100% bug free, but it sure felt dirty and grungy to me. I was kinda grossed out waiting for my food. Maybe it's just an old building, or maybe it's really dirty. I'm not sure, but it sure made me almost have to choke my food down. They've got soooo much to choose from on their menus, even the filipino dish chicken or pork adobo! Chicken Katsu, Musubi, Lumpia, Korean BBQ, Teriyaki Burger, Katsu Burgers, I could go on and on and on. Even their seaweed soup was delicious. My picky husband who almost hates anything seaweed like always finishes his soup here. He loves it. We usually order one entree of the mixed combination plates and share. They give soo much food, even sharing one, we had almost a whole entree left to take home. What a life saver this establishment was! During a recent visit to Fairbanks this past Christmas holiday, my wife and I were very limited on our choices for Christmas dinner. We stumbled across this place mainly because it was on of the very few places that was even open Christmas Day. There was nothing too fancy, and the food was actually quite delicious! We both ended up ordering the BBQ chicken plates which consisted of a generous portion of marinated juicy bbq chicken cutlet, over a bed of white rice and a side of some decent macaroni salad. We shared an order of the Spam fried noodles which I thought actually really good. We also picked up a few Spam musubi's that were just perfect, not too much rice (I obviously love SPAM)!
