Went here on the recommendation of a friend and we really enjoyed it. We both got the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger, which was outstanding. The BBQ sauce they use had some great flavor, and it was definitely a plus that I was able to choose pepperjack. We each got a "small" side order. I got the onion rings, and she got the garlic fries. I say "small", because these were heaping portions, with plenty to share. The quality definitely didn't suffer due to portion size either, because they were both delicious. And boy was he right! The small order was gargantuan! It was a heaping pile of delicious. Sooo delicious. Crispy, crunchy, perfectly lightly battered and piping hot. I've seen this place for years and had never stopped in. I can't believe I'd been missing out on amazing shoestring onion rings, good fish n chips with fresh, hand-cut fries, creamy, warm, tasty Boston-style clam chowder (free after 4pm when you buy an order of fish n chips!), and tasty malts. How did we pass this place a million times and never stop in before??? Because it's right on the highway and looks like a 50's burger stand? We should not have put it off. Stopped by this great little "dive" burger spot on friday and ordered the Sequoia Burger w/ extra American cheese & small fries, Wow! Delicious! Fries are fresh cut potatoes, tasty & HUGE! The sequoia burger was very edible, the hamburger patty was flavorful & tender , with crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes and a decent hamburger bun. My bf has been plotting to bring me to eat here for a while and for some reason, I had the impression that Sequoia Burger was going to be bigger and more of a restaurant and less of a food stand. Regardless, I enjoyed eating here. Sequoia Burger is located off the beaten path in Sebastopol. If you know the North Bay, a lot of the roads are kind of off the beaten path since most of the backroads are nicely paved beaten paths. I digress. If you've driven on a "country" road, it's one of those little shacks located near a general store with a flea market, coffee, fruit stands, taco trucks, etc., right down the street. There is a lot of outdoor seating and a few small tables inside. It's really quite small but bigger than it looks on the inside, if that makes sense. I read a review that said Sequoia Burger was cash only, but when we were there, they accepted debit card. There are several ways to look at the menu. You can stare at the menu outside, or you can stare at the menu on the inside, or you can take a look at a printed paper menu. I got the garlic ranch burger and I thought it was alright. It was a regular hamburger with some added garlic ranch sauce. I thought that maybe they would put in some roasted garlic or something, I think I would have rather replaced the ranch with cheese since the ranch didn't add much to the hamburger. The bun and hamburger patty wasn't extraordinarily out of this world but it hit the spot. Everyone is absolutely right about their fries. You get a literal ton. The three of us shared a large and I tried really hard to polish off the garlic fries. It was super delicious and the garlic was processed in some way where it wasn't very pungent or spicy in the way you associate with garlic. Anyways, it was definitely a fun drive and it's always nice to check out somewhere new to eat. While we were there, lots of people stopped by to get food. It seems like a popular local spot. I'm very confused about all the 4 and 5 star ratings of this place. Heck Yelpers, we got off 101 and drove quite a bit off our route just to get to this place because of all the high ratings!!! I must say that I am extremely disappointed. I've had some really good burgers in my day, so I think I've got a good grasp of what to expect, but here is what I ordered and what I've found. Blue Cheese burger ($5.50)- Blue Cheese, Mayo, A-1Steak sauce,cheese, onions, Pickles, tomatoes etc.. sounds good right? Well it was good I admit, but not a 5 or even 4 star in my books. First:The hamburger bun was stale. You know what I mean, the kind that crumbles when you bite into it? That was the first bad sign, you want a really good fresh baked, or fresh bought bun at the least! Second: the strong flavors of the blue cheese and steak sauce completely overpowered the hamburger meat, I really couldn't get a grasp of whether the meat was any good or not. Don't get me wrong, I've had some great Blue cheese burgers before, but the quantity of condiments on the burger was just too overpowering,, or perhaps the hamburger patty was too small.. Third: Fries were decent, fresh cut fries, but fries were soft and oily not CRISPY. Fourth: I tried to take my daughter to the women's bathroom and was confused by the sign under the "women's" sign that said "EMPLOYEE'S ONLY", and it was locked. I looked at the Men's bathroom door to see if it was Unisex, but did not see any signs indicating that it was. I asked the front whether there was a key for the women's bathroom, they indeed gave me a key and directed me to the market across the parking lot which had the port-a-potty that we were to use. I got in there and was completely disgusted, how could i even muster an appetite after being in there???? I asked my husband if he could take the girls into the "men's" bathroom, he warned me that it wouldn't be any better than the port-a-potty. I decided that my daughters and I would just "hold it" until we got to the nearest gas station. Note to owners: Please do not devalue your women patrons, by converting the only women's bathroom into an "EMPLOYEE USE ONLY" bathroom, and booting them outside to an OUTHOUSE. Spend a little more on janitorial service, and open the bathroom for all genders to utilize on property. read more

I'm adventurous so even though I saw some of the negative reviews on yelp I chose to check this place out. I don't regret the experiment, but the other reviewers were right. I ordered the fish and chips, but with the garlic fries. I should not have modified the order to garlic fries. I ended up being charged $6 for 2 pieces of mediocre fried fish and $5 for a ridiculous amount of fries separately. I most definitely did not get the fish and chips meal price. So this not so tasty meal set me back $11. That is premium pricing right there! The fries weren't even that good. It was just dry fries with some garlic and some clumped up cheese powder on it. They could've definitely given me less than the "small" order for cheaper and it would've been just okay. Also, no joke about the flies. I imagined that the other reviewers were going overboard about that, but when I opened my takeout box at the hotel .... a fly flew out of it ... WTF. I couldn't help but laugh at the situation .... This is arguably the best burger place in Sebastopol and a definite landmark in town. The small fries are HUGE and the shakes I've been told are delicious. I have no idea what's going on with service lately here. I just stood in front of a closed window at the counter for five minutes in the freezing cold waiting to order while the girl was on the phone. Once upon a time, French Fries came from potatoes. Then some foul engineer who is no doubt currently roasting in culinary hell invented mashed/extruded/ frozen fries. Since then, a plate of gen-u-ine pommes frites has gotten harder and harder to find. We were real hungry. Being a veteran, I ordered the small fries for us to split and shakes. "Just one french fry?" He asked me. Despite my reassurance that it would be plenty for both of us, he continued to question right up until they called the order. Then he said, "This is a SMALL!!!" Oh yeah. The fries were a teensy bit greasy - so no longer 5 stars - but the fact that they were recently a real, whole potato made up for that. The fresh potato flavor is fantastic. The BF was also thrilled that they weren't over-salted (for me) but came with salt on the side (for him), thus avoiding the usual 'extra salt?' tiff. But the glory that made my day was that milk shake. The texture was divine - just the right blend of thick, icy creamy center and smooth, melty edges. In fact, we tried the vanilla malted (divine flavor) and chocolate (could be more chocolaty but it was unquestionably a chocolate shake!). Reasonable prices. No ambiance to speak of. When the kids were little, they loved sitting out back but lets face it - it's a cement patio with picnic tables. I'm a fries and shake kinda gal. My last two experiences here have not been good. Fries are really dry, so who cares if there is a lot of them when they are not good? Tried the chili fries, again lots of fries but the chili tasted like something out of a can and even smothered in chili the fries were dry. My blue cheese burger was drowning in A1 steak sauce, so much so that I couldn't taste the blue cheese. Add in the long wait time and the unattractive surroundings and it adds up to a bad experience. I've driven by this place twice a month for 9 months of the year and I finally decided to stop. I was in the mood for clam chowder and they have a big sign advertising theirs. Cute little drive up eatery. Place your order, which was hard to settle on, as it all looked good, get a number, wait for the food to cook and have a seat in the cool backyard area with green awning, which gives it a really neat atmosphere. My limited budget had me settle on a cheese burger (hold the onions) and a cup of chowder. Had a nice converstaion with a local woman while we waited, and that was fun, nothing like meeting local small town folk! OK, the burger was ready, but then they wanted to make sure the chowder was hot enough, so he told me start on the burger. Sat down and after a bite, they called me on the PA to pick up the chowder. Would have been nicer to have it delivered, but no big deal, it'll be really good chowder, right? Wrong. Forget the chowder unless you like bland potato soup with a few OK chunks of clams. I had to add 3 packets of salt to make it palatable, which was really disappointing. The burger, however, was really good and worth the stop. I'll stop again and try the fries, which they rave about on their menu. Once I got to my destination, a friend told me about trying to stop by there for lunch on Easter Sunday, but they were closed, and that his friends were so disappointed as they love to eat there. He had no idea I'd been there a few hours before. So I told him that they were indeed a great place for burgers. read more

Had a "Redwood Burger" and small cajun fries. The burger is a basic burger, the produce seems freshly sliced so the lettuce and onions are crunchy. The bun has good body which I liked, but it was a little sweet, which I did not like. When I looked at my receipt, it said "Well". Hmmm, no one asked how I wanted my burger to be cooked. Upon seeing that on the receipt, I went back to ensure it would be cooked "medium" since they forgot to ask. The meat was medium and to my liking, not a lot of flavor, could have used some salt for seasoning prior to cooking. The patty is also a little thin. All in all, it's a basic burger, and expensive at that. The fries (when fried properly) are good. However, the batch I received were limp, bordering on rubbery, even though they were just out of the frier. They needed to be fried longer. All in all, the fries were disappointing. Note: more isn't necessarily better when the fries aren't crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Also, the oil needed to be changed. If you are an oil connoisseur and sensitive to rancid or over-used fry oil, skip this place unless you know they just changed the oil. If you want exemplary french fries, go to Handline down the road and get some of the best fries in Sonoma County. Fresh potatoes, hand cut, and triple fried. Rare to find at any restaurant, and worth every bite. If you want a fantastic hamburger, one of the best in the Bay Area may be enjoyed at The Perennial in San Francisco--you didn't know hamburgers could be that good. For the price, while their burger is better than fast food restaurants (and how much is that really saying anyway?), I will consider going somewhere else for a burger. Even though I rolled in 15 minutes before they were closing, the fella at the counter gave no attitude. 2018 Update: Oh, my it happened again! My up and down relationship with Sequoia Burger is on the upswing! . The burgers are are delicious! Just order one basket of fries for your whole party.. you'll see what I mean. I'm scared to try the onion rings until I see them on someone else's tray. I do not know what form they are taking these days.. but I have high hopes. 2010 Update: Aaaaaargh! I can't believe it! They reverted from their heavenly shoestring onion rings back to the heavy, doughy, bland onion ring recipe. The batter is thick, goopy, and doughy tasting. It leven looks heavy. It has no crispness at all--cooked at the wrong temperature. The thick slices of white onion are limp and tasteless, they're not cooked well because they're covered with too much goopy batter. DO NOT ORDER THE ONION RINGS! I noticed the menu featured "hand cut fries." Maybe that's the thing to get now? I'll try next time. I don't know if I changed or if Sequoia changed but I can't give it five stars anymore. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy eating here. Drove 20+ minutes away specifically to patronize this business and was told (at 7:20pm) that they stopped taking orders early and I could not be helped. Burgers are good, but not good enough to warrant supporting a business that clearly does not return the service to customers trying to support them. Employee shrugged off their early closure, I would have understood had this been a one-time experience, but from other reviews it appears not.
