Opened in 1947, the place has closed and re-opened intermittently under different owners, and most recently underwent a historic renovation process that more-or-less returns it to its origins. What you'll find here is a tiki bar that feels less like a time warp into another dimension, but rather, one that returns you to a time when tiki bars were full of things that evoke both Hawaii and the rest of Polynesia. This environment pretty much demands a rum-based cocktail and several patrons (including the band) appeared to have gotten well into the spirits. From a seat at the bar I enjoyed not just the music of the 3-person band, a good view of the surroundings, and a Nui Nui (cocktail, $19) but also a shared Spam Musubi ($7.95, excellent) and extravagantly lengthy Lumpia ($19.95). The Musubi, as indicated, was delicious and though I hadn't the appetite, I watched another bar patron sharing a fabulous looking order of poke nachos. So the drinks aren't the only reason to come here. Probably for good cause, the Royal Hawaiian isn't a late-night place. On Friday and Saturday they close at 10pm and on other days at 9pm. With a lively atmosphere, great cocktails, and some really interesting food options, the reborn Royal Hawaiian is a fun and worthy spot to at which to spend an evening.

Always attentive wait staff: and was surprised that my friend Ivan is manager: so cool to see him work the room and even bus tables. Our server Asher was fantastic. Seated with a lovely view of the bay. Calamari perfect, tender, lightly fried. My Ensalada Cobb was just what the doctor ordered: I subbed Salmon, and am bewildered that the skin was like crispy bacon and the salmon itself so tender and perfect. The caprese was fantastic, the heirloom tomatoes so flavorful! This is the Ur-SoCal experience!

Sorry dude I have to live too. Also parking is very difficult to find, but there's valet off PCH behind the art museum for $15. Okay now the good stuff.. my steak & lobster enchiladas were awesome! The green chili one was spicy and filled with lobster. The red one was a nice marinara sauce topped with Parmesan crumbles and had steak in it. The black beans and red rice actually didn't have much flavor though, probably should've put that on top. My wife's butterfly shrimp and garlic sauce with corn rice was really good too. We also had a Quest Cabernet and a peach mojito both very good! It's a little pricey here, but the experience is great. We sat outside able to admire the ocean and outdoor fire. All in all it was a good experience except for the waiter. Thank you.

I get it, for some cocktails it's not the norm, but I happen to be one of those people who love to swirl every drink in a bunch of ice. I've never once had this request turned down. Perhaps a raised eyebrow or two from a bartender but again, never a refusal. Until tonight. The drink was wonderful. Even complimented the bartender on it, but after asking twice.. politely by the way, he still refused. Told me it would somehow compromise the integrity of the drink, can't have it posted that way on social media.. etc., etc.. Pleeeez... don't flatter yourself. Also, I prefer to drink my cocktails, not take pictures of them. All that being said, none of the above mentioned is enough to make me post a bad review if it weren't for ONE thing ..... this guy's SMUG attitude. The owner served us initially, and he was really friendly and funny. We ordered a bottle of wine, and some cocktails. We put in some salads and an appetizer, they were really really good. But after that, our server (the owner we were told) left, and another server introduced himself. The new server was inattentive. He sat chatting with the other servers at the bar, leaving empty glasses and empty plates on the table. We had to flag him to come back to fill water. Having been myself in the service industry for years, my biggest pet peeve is when servers sit and chat where you can see them, and when they do come, they don't do a sweep and take care of things on the table. We had to put our empty glasses and trash on a side table. It was weird. The bolognese had hardly any meat in it. It was mostly tomato and onion. I've been to Argentina. Meat is a staple. Also weird. We ordered dessert and after waiting for 5-10 minutes, the server came back and told us they were missing crucial ingredients to make it. The owner came back at the end and was really gracious, but all in all, I think the execution was lacking. The service was not great. The food was 3.5/5 I love to support small business, perhaps we will try again another night.

Stellar Service and Exquisite Food!…read more I came into Villa Roma for dinner around 6:00 PM, absolutely famished. I was thrilled to be seated right away and given the choice of where to sit. My waitress was a beautiful, bilingual, and incredibly friendly woman named Berenice. She was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and clearly has a wonderful rapport with the regulars and locals. Taking her recommendation, I ordered the Entraña steak dinner plate (cooked medium) with a side of crunchy garlic fries, along with empanadas and fried calamari to start. The pacing of the meal was fantastic. The empanadas were brought out immediately, followed closely by the calamari. The flavors were so exquisite that I completely cleared both appetizer plates while enjoying my water! My main entrée arrived very shortly after. Because I enjoyed the starters so much, I was too full to finish it, but I tasted the steak and a few fries. The steak was perfectly soft and absolutely delicious! I packed the rest to-go, and ended up ordering two extra meat empanadas and a Coke Zero (partly because I needed to break a $20 bill so I could leave a cash tip!). In total, everything came out to $93.72, including the tip. I don't treat myself to a meal out like this even once every three months, but I am so glad I came. The entire staff works seamlessly together to make sure all customers are attended to super fast. I am officially a huge fan and will absolutely be back--especially for their half-price empanada Tuesdays and buy-one-get-one-free pizza Wednesdays. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Empanadas: Spinach empanada, the filling was to wet, too milkiy spinach not trimmed enough, and it tasted worse since it was fried. Had they controlled the picadillo prep, it wouldn't be milky. Chicken empanada- This did not taste as our traditonal empanadas, way too many spices and it was spicy, we do not do spicy, we do flavor. Chicken tasted sandy. Choripan: Poor meat quality, too chewy and grainy, I felt like I was eating sand. Bread overdone. Rusa: Bland. Overpriced for what you get and for the quality of the food. I give it 2 stars for still having some great products at the market, free parking and pleasant service, but my goodness, your prices are too high compared to other Argentina establishments.
